″′Fatou Kandè Senghor (Fatoumata Bintou Kandè)″′ è nata il 9 gennaio 1971 a Dakar in Senegal.
Fatou Kandè Senghor è un artista poliedrica visiva, lavora come regista, fotografa, cameraman, produttrice,
docente e costumista.
Nel suo linguaggio artistico utilizza mezzi espressivi come la fotografia, il video, la pittura, con lo scopo di
elevare la consapevolezza attorno a lei.
Ha creato una piattaforma di ricerca artistica chiamata “Waru Studio”(‘Waru’ in lingua Wolof significa
stupore) a Dakar, un laboratorio di sperimentazione che collega discipline come l’arte, la scienza
tecnologica, l’ecologia, l’ambiente e la politica, dedicato si registi della sua generazione. Si occupa di
esplorare nuove tecnologie come alternativa per l’industria cinematografica e dare voce ai popoli del
continente africano.
Fatou ha lavorato come cameraman con Wim Wenders sul cortometraggio "The Invisible", un film sulle
donne abusate dai guerrieri Maggio Maggio durante la guerra in Congo, scrivendo anche numerose
pubblicazioni al riguardo.
La sua opera “On quest for modern Africa” è stata presentata alla Biennale d'Arte Contemporanea Africana
di Dakar del 2004. Nel 2006 ha seguito dell’invito di Okwui Enwezor, curatore di «Giudizi Affrettati: nuove
posizioni nella fotografia contemporanea africana» presso l'International Center of Photography di New
York, ha presentato le foto del Tribunale abbandonato del diritto di Dakar.
Nel 2010 al ciclo di incontri [[FuoriLuogo]], organizzato da [[Connecting Cultures]], ha presentato il lavoro
“Seeking the Truth”, con l’obiettivo di raccontare e analizzare gli aspetti sconosciuti e complessi delle
tradizioni del proprio paese e anche di utilizzare la creatività, l'arte e le immagini per coinvolgere giovani e
donne nel cambiare il proprio futuro.
Inoltre svolge un importante lavoro di promozione di giovani artisti, fotografi e filmaker che operano in
Senegal, aiutandoli e supportandoli nella realizzazione di progetti e nella promozione anche a livello
internazionale.
Fatou Kandè Senghor è convinta che l’arte in Africa sia un’arma utile per contrastare i problemi che
riguardano gli africani oltre che un aiuto a sensibilizzare e rendere pubblici aspetti sconosciuti e complessi
delle tradizioni del proprio paese. Utilizzando la creatività e le immagini per coinvolgere i giovani e
soprattutto le donn) nel cambiare il proprio futuro.
