It is estimated that over 200 million birds are killed each year in Italy for no
reason other than span. The Lega Italiana Protezioni Uccelli (UPU) aims to
change people's attitudes and actively to promote the welfare of birds in Italy.

Each spring millions of birds are
killed in Italy. For many birds
crossing the Strait of Messina, to
mainland Italy, migration is a oneway trip.• Around Messina poachers firing from huts, specially
built shooting towers and even
rooftops kill thousands of birds. In
1989 on one day alone L1PU
observers recorded more than
3,000 shots in the Messina area.
Favourite targets are the migrating
birds of prey; most prized of all are
the, majestic honey buzzards, the
"adorn'''. Tragically, it seems, the
killing of an "adorno" is still regarded by some young men as proof
of their machismo.
In Italy the killing of migratory birds
is worse than any other Mediterranean country: in the north, birds
are trapped using' snares, and, lime
and there are sophistcated trapping stations. Shooting' is widespread and often indiscriminate
throughout Italy, but is particularly
heavy in the south. Estimates of
the number of birds shot in Italy
each ,year exceed. 200 million and
the'main reason for bird killing on
this massive scale is, quite simply,
fun. Birds are not an essential
source of food or income although,
of course, some birds are eaten or
sold in local markets.
.
It is interesting to note how important Italy is to the migratory birds:
every spring millions cross from
Tunisia to Sicily, one of the shortest Mediterranean crossings, and
one of three main gateways into
Europe. Large soaring birds, raptors and storks.. favour this narrow
front in particular.
The laws in Italy largely favour'the
hunters, 'and those designed to
protect birds are
poorly enforced.
,
UPU was founded' in 1965 to
protect wild birds and their natural
habitat, and now has over 20,000
members., UPU manages nature
reserves and undertakes research
into the threats to birds and the
en\(irohment in Italy., It is constantly
campaigning
for stronger bird pro\
(.tection laws and the enforcement
of the EEC Bird Directive in Italy.
.
UPU's efforts are beginning to
produce results: altitudes are
changing. In 1989 over 700,00
people supported UPU's campaign for a referendum to curb
hunting. In January the Italian Constitutional Court declared that such
a referendum would be constitutional:
The referendum will give Italian
voters the opportunity to vote for
strict controls on hunting including
the ,abolition of biid
netting and shooting
from hides, a restriction
on the hunting season
and effective policing
of the hunting laws.
tered hunters, backed by a huge
armaments industry and a well
organised gun-lobby, so the hunters won't be short of funds. UPU's
resources, however, will be limited.
As well as national campaigns,
UPU organises volunteers to try to
stop the illegal slaughter each year
of the spring migrants. Sometimes
the receive help from the local
police or forest guards, although
last year t~e, police helicopter arrived too 'late, after the main migration and killing had taken
place.
,
.
The volunteers, however, are quite
clear that,theyare in the frontlin~
and that can ,be dangerous. ,In
recent y~ars the 'UPU.offiqes 'i(1
Messina have b~e(1 blow(l,up,and.
a car belonging to the local'UPU
representative Ariria, Giordano was
destroyed by fire.
In 1989 UPU (UK), the Italian
League fqr Bird portection - UK
Branch was formed and comprises
UPU members, "Friends of L1PU",
supporters and sympathisers in
Britain who want to support bird
proiection in Italy. UPU UK seeks
to pUblicise in Britain the massacre
of birds in Italy and the efforts of
Italian conserVationists to stop the
massacre and also to raise extra
funds in Britain for, UPU's, bird
protection programmes in Italy.
.
A national appeal for funds was
launched in Britain by L1PU (UK's)
patrons, conservationist Tony
Soper and 1V birdwatcher Bill
Oddie. They were joined by AJex

My First Barn Dance

One Saturday, my financial adviser
and his lovely wife took me out to
a Primary School in the heart of
Wembley where a barn dance was
held. IT WAS NOT WHAT I EXPEC·
TED! The Caller up on the stage
gave out instructions of the dance
before he started the music:
1. Everybody get into pairs • man
and woman.
'
2. Now join into·a group with three
other couples, men standing in a
line on one side, facing their fellow
ladies.
3. Skip to the middle and bow,
skip back out and clap.
4. Grab your partner's hands and
swing - 2,3,4 and the other way 2,3,4.
5. Doh-see-doh and back again!
6. Now the top couple, Skip down
the middle, form an
arch and
everyone run through - ya hoot!

A Concert with an Italian Flavour
,
On Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th June, SS Peter & Paul's Music/Drama Group, together w~h
L'Orchestra Rara, will be in concert with a selection of popular songs from Broadway to Borgotaro.
Olive Besagni, the producer of the show, was approached by the organisers of the Clerkenwell Festival, to
stage a concert with a strong Italian flavour, the "Ouartiere Ilaliano" being an integral part of Clerkenwell's
history. What better way to achieve this than to bring together on one stage a 40 strong handpicked choir,
with the popular "Orchestra Rara", and solqists par excellence.
The programme will include music from the 'SOs through to the present day,'wlth Italian traditional songs
and great tunes from film and shows.
This is a great opportunity to hear once again several of the songs that w~re specially composed by
Romano
Viazzani and Mark Bird for the musical "Down
the Hill".
• •
•
The concert will take place at the luxurious SI. Luke's Conference Centre, Central Street, E.C.1. and will
begin on both evenings at 7.30. p.m. Tickets £6.00. Tel. 071 837 4830.

With excellent support from Afro

Italians who have this opera In
their blood you have the classic
reading of this opera.
Of late we have had some excellEint recordings of Verdi's
"Requiem". But one that has
stayed at the top of the list for
many connoisseurs Is the 1939
recording conducted by Serafin
with Gigli, Caniglia, Stignanl an,d
Pinza. The cast of one's dreams.
'Once or twice GigU d,oes cross .the

is poured into this most spiritual
music. Canlglia has just the right

last few years. Stignanl too .sings
this music as if she herself were at.

you will never hear the. bass line
sung with such majesty of tone. A
classic.

The English Challenge
Wtiere to start? As an Englishman,
born and bred, my support must
go with them and yet I have gone
on record for the better part of the
last decade saying that England
will not win anything with Robson
at the helm. To make matters
worse, the Manager has .just
named his 22.
Realistically,
chances?
what
are
ttieir
Let us begin. right at the back•.
England's strength, as always, is
in their goalkeeping department.
Shilton will start as number 1 (in
spite of surprising fallibility against
Uruguay). I agree with Robson
omiting Chelsea's Dave Beasant.
•

Derby is being taken as t~e
reserve. This is subject to hiS
passing a fitness test but frankly,
he has had his chance to establish
a place in the EnQla!ld side ~ut
has not been commanding
enough. On the other hand Tony
Adams has had a marvellous
domestic season and is a better
player now than when he played in
the European Championships.
In spite of England's impressive
recent record, it is the back four
which causes me most concern,
particularly the full backs. I thought
Robson would probably begin the'
tournament with Stevens and
Pearce but I was delighted to see
that Parker started the home internatiorial, against Uruguay. Parker is
a marvellous asset because not
only does he have pace but he is
also capable of playing in the
middle of the back four and is
ideal cover for Des Walker should
he get injured. Pearce on the other
hand is a positive liability, and
whilst he is a whole hearted player,
his defensive qualities undoub:
tedly lack a measure of subtlety
and that is being nice to him. It will
be surprising if he g03S through
the opening qualifying games without. at least one booking. I really
am astonished that Winterburn has
not been given a place in the
squad. Instead cover for Pearce is
provided by Tony. Dorigo of Chelsea. He may have an Italian name
but in fact he is Australian born.
He only has three caps and is one
of the most inexperienced players
in the squad. Th~ left flank· is
decidedly vulnerable.
For my part, I would play McMahon, Gascoigne, Robson and
Waddle in the middle with Uneker
up front. The only question is who
should play alongside him? 'f!1e
manager is experimenting with
Bames. If the two can hit it off then
that is the Ideal formation. It may
well be that a target centre forward
in the form of Steve Bull may
cause a few problems, failing
which Beardsley has never let
England down. It is asking a lot of
Bull though to jump from. second
division football to the World stage.
So how will England fare? I hope
and trust that this time Robson will
• have learned his lessons from the
past and will go into the competition with a very clear perception of
how England propose to play and
stick to that scheme although he
may need to modify his pairing up
front. I believe that this time Eng·
land will perform more creditably
and qualify for the quarter finals.
