LONG LIVE THE TOUCH SCREEN !!!!!! VIVA IL TOUCH SCREEN !!!!!! lire). In 1996, the year that saw the start of the great adventure of games with prize machines in the Italian coinop industry, in alternative to the traditional video games that were in decline, a new type of machine appeared, dedicated purely to relaxation and entertainment, commonly called “touch screens”. The main innovation introduced by these machines was the special technology that allows the player to play by simply touching the monitor, without needing to press buttons or operate joysticks. Right from the start, moreover, “touch screens” allowed the possibility to choose from a wide range of games that attracted not only the traditional players, but also others, such as the women and not-so-young people who, until then, were not particularly fond of video games. This new concept of video game was such a success that it became immediately necessary to fit the machines with a banknote reader (until then all video games were operated using tokens or 500 lire coins), another important innovation in the coin-op sector. In the following years, the new touch screen technology was also used to make “gambling machines”, which were not however a great success, as was the case of the touch screens that we could define as “mixed”, which allowed a choice between games of pure skill and games with prizes. On the other hand, the good results continued for the touch screens that, as well as offering a variety of games of skill, also worked as MP3 jukeboxes, Karaoke machines or alternatively as Internet points. Many games are available in these machines, and they can be sub-divided into four main categories: • Card games (the more famous of these are: Eleven, Fun Towers and Patience), which however have nothing to do with gambling card games; • Games of knowledge (quizzes on various topics: sport, general knowledge, geography, cinema etc); • Games of concentration (the better known include: Shanghai and Find it); • Games of skill (which often refer to the arcade classics: Super Mario Bross, Pang, Tetris, Nibbler). 48 THE EXPERT Photoplay Spirit, Funworld. rifanno a famose vecchie glorie, tipiche del settore arcade: Super Mario Bross, Pang, Tetris, Nibbler). Questo sistema offre il grosso THE CONSTRUCTIONAL HARDWARE One interesting aspect, from a technical point of view, was the use, for the first time in our sector, of a computer with similar characteristics to a common PC, with the task of managing the entire video game. Until then, all other entertainment appliances were controlled by an electronic board that, despite being functionally equivalent to a computer, was made to measure for that specific game. The computer used in touch screens is on the other hand fitted with a main board, hard disk, video card, RAM and PCI or ISA bus. The first products used 486 microprocessors, yet subsequently, with the advances in technology, other mother boards and faster processors have been used. The operating systems that the various games program run on also include the more widely used systems, such as DOS, PTSDOS and Windows 98, and some manufacturers have also begun to use Linux. Another innovation is the use of VGA monitors, instead of the normal 15kHz RGB. These videos however initially supported 640 x 480 resolution and thus had rather large pixels (0.83) that made the definition of image details quite grainy. Today, thanks to modern technology, touch screens feature 31kHz SVGA monitors with 800 x 600 resolution, which make the screen larger and feature smaller pixels (0.39 – 0.27), offering the player better defined graphics. TOUCH TECHNOLOGY “Touch screen” technology is based on the use of a modern transducer that converts the touch of the finger on the surface of the monitor into a digital signal managed by the computer. These transducers are made exclusively by two companies: Microtouch and Elotouch. They appear as simple transparent windows fitted with special sensors and are installed on top of the monitor, and are flat for use with LCDs or alternatively concave (or more correctly “spherical”) for use with a cathode ray tube, and they vary in size according to the monitor used in the video game (17”, 20”, 21”, etc.). In special cases, Elotouch makes touch screens inserted directly on the surface of the monitor. This system offers the main advantage of eliminating the space between the monitor and the glass surface where the player touches the screen, thus preventing any alignment errors in selecting a specific part. I controller ISA com- the case of simple glass resting on the monitor that, if violently struck by the player or a falling object, risks breaking; it is almost impossible on the other hand to break the screen of a cathode ray tube. For the construction of video games Microtouch recommends capacitive technology (the Microtouch line also includes resistive touch screens), which works well in the presence of humidity, dust and dirt in general. This type of glass touch screen is made up of normal glass covered by a layer of transparent metal oxide and four special sensors fitted in the corners. These sensors are powered at a set voltage, so that an electrical field is created on the metal oxide surface. The player’s finger, when touching the glass, alters the field, and based on the drop in voltage measured by the four sensors, the “controller” connected to the sensors can determine the precise co-ordinates of the point where the finger touches the screen by converting the analogue signals from the sensors into “digital” signals to be processed by the PC. The latter accessory may be connected externally to the serial port, or alternatively ISA compatible and fitted internally. The recent capacitive touch screens offer greater transparency than those released 4/5 years ago and are more scratch-proof. The older products, in fact, if scratched, lose their characteristics and no longer operate correctly. The Elotouch touch screens are made from normal untreated glass fitted in the four corners with acoustic wave transmitters and receivers. In standby, the transmitters produce waves that, thanks to the engraving around the perimeter of the glass with a specific gradient, create a grid on the surface of the touch screen; the player, touching the monitor, modifies the intensity of the wave, and based on the measurements made by the receivers, it is possible to determine the reference co-ordinates and thus the position of the finger on the touch screen. The acoustic wave system also measures, in addition to the X and Y co-ordinates on the monitor, the force with which the player presses the finger on the screen. This third Z co-ordinate allows the designer to make games in which the player may, for example, press the accelerator or hit a golf ball with varying force, etc. This model of touch screen also requires a device that converts the analogue signals from the sensors on the glass into digital signals for the computer: these controllers feature a serial connection. This type of touch screen also has the important advantage of working correctly even if scratched or broken, as the grid on the surface is not affected by the deformation of the glass. Recently Merit has introduced a new controller that, together with a very sophisticated program, can allow the same game to be played by 2 people, as if the screen were physically divided into two parts: this is a very innovative principle that makes the games much more attractive than in the past.♠
