Liberation Day is a
national holiday in
Italy that is annually
celebrated on April
25. It marks the fall of
Mussolini’s Italian Social
Republic and the end of
the Nazi occupation in
Italy in 1945, towards the
end of the second World
War.
Liberation Day (Festa
della Liberazione)
remembers Italians who
fought against the Nazis
and Mussolini’s troops
during World War II.
The day honors those
who served in the Italian
Resistance. Marching
bands, music concerts,
food festivals, political
rallies, and other public
gatherings take place in
many places in Italy.
Liberation Day is a
nationwide public holiday
in Italy. Organizations
and businesses that
are closed include:
Government offices, Post
offices, Banks, Schools
and other educational
institutions.
Transport options, such
as taxis, rail services
between major cities
and major long-route
bus lines, are available
but travelers are advised
to check first with local
transport authorities.

On March 14, I attended
the Sons’ of Italy Gala.
It was an outstanding
event. Over 1100 guests
attended and the Italian
Canadian League of
Manitoba Inc. was
presented a cheque for
100,000.00 dollars.
During the months of
February and March, the
League has been working
on the refinancing of the
mortgage of the Caboto
Centre. What we thought
would be a simple
transfer of mortgage that
had been approved by
the financial institution
has turned out to be a
complicated procedure.
According to the lease
agreement between the
City of Winnipeg and
the ICLMI, the City of
Winnipeg must approve
of the registration of
the caveats without
prejudice. As of today,
the City of Winnipeg has
approved the refinancing
and we are on our way to
developing and ensuring
a strong financial
outcome for 2015.

a group of young Italian
men, Danny Militano,
Dino Petrelli and Antonio
Cianflone regarding a
soccer fundraiser called
the “Copa Caboto”. They
are planning to host
by the Italian Canadian
Foundation of Manitoba
Inc.. It was a wonderful
event, show-casing the
musical talent of U of M
Opera Program students,
as well as the Viva l’Italia
this event in July at the
Centro. Proceeds will be
shared with the Centro
and a Sports organization
for youth. It is promising
and it was inspiring to see
youth get involved in our
community.
On Sunday, April 12, I
attended the Evening of
Light Opera, organized
Choir. The event was
well attended; the meal
was excellent and was
enjoyed by all.

It was definitely a
spectacular evening,
full of surprises, our
17th Annual “Evening of
Light Opera” organized
by the Italian Canadian
Foundation of Manitoba!
Beginning with the large
attendance of a classy
audience that flocked to
the Caboto Centre on
Sunday April 12, 2105.
The Mauro Hall was
beautifully decorated
by Rick Mayhew who
was able to create a
mysterious and dramatic
atmosphere, in perfect
L’Italia Choir which he
also manages.
I must say he has
performed a “crescendo”
for many years now, and
the end of every evening
we thought he could not
do any better. But he
did. From the time we
had the Manitoba Opera
Chorus singing for us,
to when Tracy Dahl was
honoured, then Tdadeusz
Biernacki with the
incredible tenor Richard
Margison who brought
tears to our eyes with his
amazing interpretation
of “ Nessun dorma”, to
Paul Winkelmans and
Lynlee Wolstencroft also
entertained the audience
with top performances
from Tosti, Leoncavallo,
Rossini, Bellini and
Verdi. They also
included some arias from
Richard Strauss and the
everlasting Capurro –Di
Capra “ O sole mio”.
The Viva L’Italia
Choir, more numerous
and vibrant under the
direction of Julie Biggs
, our pianist Michele
Barr and our accordionist

Each table setting was
elegant, gracefully
complemented by the
slim tall vase, with fresh
flowers, as a center piece.
Our most senior Board
member, Sam Fabro,
delivered an emotional
toast to our absent
friends, all our loved ones
who are no longer with
us. For grace, Father Sam
and his friend performed
a duet musical blessing,
in the canto Gregoriano
style, that received
the well-deserved first
applause of the evening.

The Chairman for the
evening, the Foundation’s
very busy President,
Mario Audino, took care
of the organization ( with
the help of the Board
of Directors of course)
and all the details of the
event , including the Viva
tonight performances
in honour of Prof. Mel
Braun, whose help has
always been crucial to the
Evenings of Light Opera.
He is an accomplished,
well-loved and very
successful baritone, who
also teaches and directs
and plays the piano as
if his fingers were the
extension of his soul.
The tribute his students
paid to him during the
evening speaks better
than any words I could
write, but most of all
the tribute that his son
Micah paid to him by
singing and playing in
duet with him was truly
a proof of his dedication,
passion and professional
achievements. Bravo
Mel!
Bravo also to the
singers, with a touch of
preference on my part
for the voice and stage
presence of Sarah Jo
Kirsh. But Justin Odwak,
Vincenzo Di Chiara’s
passionate masterpiece
“ La Spagnola” with
lovely Cinzia Montesanti
solo; Gambardella’s
Neapolitan song “ O ‘
Marenariello” and Verdi’s
“Va Pensiero” that
brought tears to my eyes,
and I am sure I was not
the only one. Bravo Viva
L’Italia Choir!
A special “bravo” goes
to a surprise guest,
Micah Braun, for his
interpretation of some
lovely Italian songs
accompanied by his
guitar and in duet with
his father Mel on the
piano. I think we all
(especially the Italians
in the audience),
particularly enjoyed his
interpretation of one of
Fred Buscaglione greatest
success: Buona Sera….
Signorina buona sera,
com’e bello in faccia a
Napoli sognar…buona
sera, signorina kiss me
goobye … it brought me
right back to my teens.
Bravo to Centro’s
chef, Roberto Borrelli!
Dinner was amazing:
the Capriccio Italiano
antipasto had also the
small stuffed red pepper
that I love, in addition
to very fresh classic
cold cuts and a superb
Asiago cheese. The
Cavatelli primavera
melted in your mouth
with the delicate taste of
the sauté vegetables and
the freshly grated Italian
Parmesan cheese. The
stuffed Pollo Toscano
with the Marinara Sauce
that Pavarotti used to
love, was excellent and
so were the vegetables
and the mixed green
salad. Not to mention a
totally new dessert that
he prepared for our taste
buds delight ( apparently
his wife prepared that
to him on their first
date… ) : poached pears
perfectly married with the
lemon gelato (courtesy
of Nucci’s Gelati). To
die for! For me it was
particularly special, as
my grandmother used to
make it in Piemonte as
long as I can remember:
she would poach the
pears in some robust red
wine, such as Barbera or
Barolo, with spices like
cinnamon and cloves, and
served with fresh ricotta
cheese…yammy! Just as
the one we ate.

Canadian Foundation’s
President and thew entire
Board of Directors for
their priceless volunteer
work; the Centro
Caboto’s staff; the
wonderful performers;
the honouree; and all the
guests who attended the
event. We hope to see

A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP
Seniors need about 7-9 hours of sleep each night.
Failing to provide our bodies with the rest needed
each night can bring on problems that can range
from irritability, forgetfulness, feeling sleepy or
tired during the day to, over time, experiencing
memory problems, depression or even falls.
Some tips and suggestions
Follow a regular sleep schedule;
Avoid afternoon naps;
Relax before bed;
Keep your bedroom dark;
Avoid exercising 3 hours before your bedtime;
Get some sunlight;
Avoid large meals before bedtime;
Avoid caffeine late in the day

On April 16, 2015 over
50 seniors of the 55+Program and other members of the community
travelled together to the
Centennial Concert Centre for a dress rehearsal
of Puccini’s Turandot.
The group met at Café
13 at the Centro Caboto
and then boarded the bus
to the concert centre.
The whole evening was
a wonderful opportunity for the community to
connect with each other
and embrace yet another
experience of Italian
culture.
The opera Turandot was
composed by Giacomo
Puccini and was first
performed at La Scala in
Milan in 1926 conducted
by Arturo Toscanini. The
Opera was unfinished
at the time of Puccini’s
death in 1924.
The work takes us back
to ancient China where
the Princess Turandot
announces that she will
marry the first man who
can answer her three
riddles. However, she
also declares that if they
are unsuccessful then
they will be put to death.
After a number of suitors
tried and failed, Prince
Calaf appears on the
scene falling in love with
Princess Turandot and
enters the contest all the
time keeping his identity
a secret. He solves all of
the three riddles and now
Princess Turandot must
marry him. She objects
and Prince Calaf makes
an offer of his life if she
can solve his riddle by
dawn of the next day.
Princess Turandot accepts
his challenge and gives
her the riddle – What
is his name? By dawn
Princess Turandot has not
solved the riddle and then
Prince Calaf, out of his
love for Turandot, tells
her it is “Love”.
It was a night of lively
conversation, colour,
music and joy!

L’opera ci riporta indietro
nell’antica Cina, dove
la Principessa Turandot
annuncia che sposera’
il primo che riuscira’ ad

Chiunque pero’ non dara’
la giusta risposta, sara’
condannato a morte.
Dopo un certo numero
di attentati e fallimenti,
il Principe Calaf appare
sulla scena e si innamora
della Principessa. Partecipa alla gara mantenendo
pero’ sempre in incognito
il suo nome.. Vince ed e’
quindi idoneo a sposare
la Principessa Turandot
. Senonche’ lei ancora
si rifiuta di sposarlo. A
questo punto Calaf le fa
una controfferta sfidandola a conoscere il suo
nome prima dell’alba. Se
lei vincera’, lui morira’,
ma se lei perdera’ allora
dovra’ sposarlo. All’alba
Calaf rivela alla Principessa che il suo nome e’
“Love”. A questo punto
lei cede al suo amore.
E’ stata una serata di
conversazioni animate,
colori, musica ed allegria.

Giovanni Racciatti,
President of the Amici
Abruzzesi Association
of Winnipeg, passed
away at the age of 82 on
Friday April 10, 2015.
Giovanni will be sadly
missed by his wife Maria,
of 50 years, his daughter
Julia (Chris), his son
Roberto (Franca) and his
grandchildren Jessica,
Connor, Carter, Colton,
Davide and Dante.
Giovanni was born
in Guilmi, Abruzzo,
Italy and immigrated
to Canada in 1957. For
36 years he worked
for Canadian Pacific
Railway from where he
proudly retired as shop
supervisor. Giovanni
was an active member of
Holy Rosary Parish and
the Knights of Columbus.
He enjoyed fishing,
gardening, traveling
and spending time with
family and friends.
Giovanni was very
proud of his Italian
heritage and in October
1993, he became one
of the principal cofounders of the Amici
Abruzzesi Association
of Winnipeg. Giovanni
was the first president of
the Association and over
the last 22 years has held
the position for many of
those years.
With Giovanni leading,
the Amici Abruzzesi
Association of Winnipeg
became an active member
of the Italian Canadian
League of Manitoba,
the Canadian National
Organization Abruzzesse
and the Consiglio
Regionale Abruzzesi nel
Mondo (CRAM) which
represents Abruzzesi
clubs in over 15 countries
across the world.

Giovanni played
an integral part in
organizing many
social and fundraising
events for the Amici
Abbruzzesi Association.
Organizations, such as
the Manitoba Cancer
Research Foundation,
Heart and Stroke
Foundation, Seven Oaks
Hospital Foundation,
Holy Rosary Church,
Red Cross, 2009
Earthquake in Abruzzo
and the Centro Caboto,

Dinner with My Nonno

On Friday, March 20th, a
group of our community
members gathered at Cafè
13 for a night under the
sea with Chef Roberto
Borrelli. This was a new
initiative launched by
Alex Baksina, Maria
Pepè/Nucci and Chef
Borrelli for a different
dinner and a nice night
out. I figured this was
the perfect opportunity
to take my Nonno out for
dinner. We enjoyed an
amazing 4 course seafood
medley.
After eating all this food
you think one would start

to feel full, but, as a true
Italiana, I knew there
was much more food to
come. I could hardly wait
because so far the food had
been impeccable! Chef
Borrelli wasn’t holding
anything back with these
dishes. Our final course
turned out to be the best
and biggest of them all.
It consisted of a grande
frittura mista with smelts,
calamari, shrimp, rapini
and yes, more baccalà.
This time the baccalà was
fried in batter and ohhh so
delectable! For dessert,
we had a refreshing lemon
gelato which cleansed the
palate. Everything tasted
so fresh and the flavours

garnished with black
olives. Many, including

added tomato sauce to
the baccalà; che bella
sorpresa!

THE TRAVEL BUG
WHERE ARE WE GOING NEXT?

Though I had my fair
share of traveling by air,
sea, and land with any
means of transportations
I could find, donkeys
and camels included,
traveling never ceases to
amaze me. Some of the
most amazing places I
have visited were Peru
and Ecuador, and if you
like nature, culture and
soft adventure at its best,
follow me this coming
October when I will be
returning to these Countries.
The lines, drawn in the
sand over 2000 years ago,
form enormous geometrical shapes resembling a
landing field as well as 32
figures including a monkey, a spider, a condor , a
reptile and more. In 1994
the lines were designated
and protected as a World
Heritage Site by Unesco.
Uktimately, something
truly unique and unforgettable, the ancient
Inca’s city of Machu
Pichu, a 15th-century
Inca site located on a
mountain ridge 2,430
metres above sea level in
Peru. Most archaeologists
believe that Machu Picchu was built as an estate
for the Inca emperor Pachacuti. Often mistakenly
referred to as the “Lost
City of the Incas”, it is
the most familiar icon of
Ecuador is a prime
destination for the nature
lover people who wish to
follow Darwin’s path and
understand, hands on (so
to speak), his theories of
the survival of the fittest
in the Galapagos Islands.
First we will explore
the unspoiled Ecuadorian Amazon, flying from
Quito to Coca, then to
the Francisco de Orellana Port where you will
get on a motorized canoe
downstream the Napo
River. During the trip,
you will have the chance
to see different birds such
as kingfishers, herons
and other and admire
the incredible views
of the Amazon jungle.
Then, we will continue
our way to the lodge
on paddle-canoes. This
majestic and peaceful
dugout canoe ride on a
narrow stream will lead
us to the Añangu Lake,
where the Napo Wildlife
Center is located. We
will spend three wonderful days of exploration
before heading back to
Quito. The next day a
short flight will take us
to Baltra in the Galapagos Islands. From there
we will board a small 16
passenger Yacht that will
take us across the most
famous archipelagos in
the world where in fact
the animals have adjusted
to the environments and
even the same species
look different from island
to island. See it to believe
it! Five wonderful days
of explorations to the
Islands and we will return
to the mainland and travel to Peru, where we’ll
visit Lima, the charming capital city, and then
Paracas; finally, from the
Pisco airstrip we’ll fly
on a small plane over the
mysterious Nazca Lines.
Inca civilization; a place
that attracts nearly half
million visitors every
year, in 2007 it was voted
one of the “New 7 Wonders of the World”.

wish to relax and enjoy
their holidays listening to
the sound of the waves,
enjoy good food and
good company, I suggest

ha esordito Papa Francesco, sabato 21 marzo,
durante la sua visita a
Napoli incontrando la
popolazione nel difficile
quartiere di Scampia. “Voi – ha dichiarato
Bergoglio rivolgendosi ai
napoletani – appartenete
a un popolo dalla lunga
storia, attraversata da
vicende complesse e
drammatiche. La vita a
Napoli non è mai stata facile, però non è mai stata
triste! È questa la vostra
grande risorsa: la gioia,
l’allegria. Questa è una
sfida bella: non lasciare
mai che il male abbia
l’ultima parola”. Affrontando poi la questione
relativa agli immigrati
e ai senza fissa dimora,
Papa Francesco ha sottolineato che non si tratta di
“esseri umani di seconda
classe”. “Dobbiamo far
sentire ai nostri fratelli e
sorelle migranti che sono
cittadini, che sono come
noi, figli di Dio, che
sono migranti come noi,
perché tutti noi siamo
migranti verso un’altra
patria”. Altro tema delicato toccato dal Pontefice
è stato quello relativo alla
“mancanza di lavoro per
i giovani”. “Il problema –
ha detto Bergoglio – non
è mangiare, il problema
più grave è non avere
la possibilità di portare
il pane a casa, di guadagnarlo! E quando non
si guadagna il pane, si
perde la dignità! Questa
mancanza di lavoro ci
ruba la dignità. Questo
è il dramma del nostro
tempo. Non dobbiamo
rimanere zitti. Il lavoro
a metà, lo sfruttamento
delle persone nel lavoro
vuol dire schiavitù e
sfruttamento; questo non
è umano, questo non è
cristiano.” Collegandosi
poi al grave problema legato alla corruzione, Papa
Francesco ha usato parole
forti dicendo: “La corruzione puzza! La società
corrotta puzza! Un cristiano che lascia entrare
dentro di sé la corruzione
non è cristiano, puzza!”.
Sono invece necessarie
secondo il Pontefice
“la presenza e l’attivo
impegno delle Istituzioni
cittadine, perché una
comunità non può progredire senza il loro sostegno, tanto più in momenti
di crisi e in presenza di
situazioni sociali difficili e talvolta estreme.
La ‘buona politica’ è un
servizio alle persone, che
si esercita in primo luogo
a livello locale, dove il
peso delle inadempienze,
dei ritardi, delle vere e
proprie omissioni è più

e dell’amore. Fate una

Alfano era in città per un
vertice sulla sicurezza
di Expo, Milano si è
mostrata fragile e insicura
proprio in uno dei luoghi

Come è possibile entrare
armati in un Tribunale
importante come quello
di Milano? Come si può

Well, soap does not thoroughly rinse off the face.
It packs into the top layer
of skin cells, which are
arranged like fish scales
or shingles on a roof,
where it dries, thickening
the skin, preventing penetration of the wonderful
products you buy to make
you look younger.
What’s exfoliate? It
means: removing the
dead cells. Exfoliating products, otherwise
known as scrubs, (NOT (I
repeat, NOT, an alphahydroxy acid product or
facsimile), clear away
the dead cells resulting
when the skin’s own
collagen and elastin are
healthily active. If these
dead cells, disguised as
dry skin, aren’t removed,
the skin appears dull and
cloudy, and the pores
become clogged and
stretched. No amount of
so-called ‘moisturizer’
can remedy the situation.
The goal is, or should
be, a luminous, refinedlooking, complexion.
Sunscreen all the time?
You may need to try a
few before you find one
that’s comfortable on
your face but this is necessary for two reasons.
First, each year the sun
becomes more dangerous; especially when its
rays are shorter, between

can happen in halfan-hour, even through
the car window, and is
impossible to remedy,
once the skin’s pigment
has been re-arranged.
Second, the additional
layer of product, between
your day cream and your
make-up base, provides
the additional benefit of
a microscopic layer of
oxygen-containing air.
This works like triplepane windows, protecting
from cold, wind, weather,
car exhaust, pollution,
fluorescent lights, and
any other effluvia.

paper.
More specifically, the Managing Editor will:
• Work closely with: - the Layout & Design
Coordinator; Advertising and Distribution
Manager; and the current League’s President
(Alfina Grande).
• Identify and encourage writers and translators
for appropriate news, information and articles
for the content of the paper.
• Assess and evaluate the appropriateness,
suitability, quality and length of all items
received for publication.
• Receive, evaluate and edit the first draft;
provide and/or obtain addidional content, for
the satisfactory completion of each issue of the
paper.
• Refer any advertisement inquiries to the
Advertisement Manager and liaise with the
Printer as the need arises. Monitor the revenues
and expenditures via periodic consultation with
the Advertising Manager.
