Alessandro Somma
Alessandro Somma, PhD in Comparative Law (University of Florence, Italy), is Professor of
Comparative law at the University of Ferrara, Italy and Member of the Doctoral School of the
University of Venice (Italy). He teaches Comparative Legal Systems, Private Comparative Law,
Anglo-American Law, North and South American Law, European Private Law.
Language skills: Italian (native), English (C1), French (C1), German (C1), Spanish (B1).
From 1998 to 2002 he was Professore a contratto of Private comparative law at the Faculty of
Law of the University of Genoa (Italy) and from 1998 to 2000 Research fellow at the MaxPlanck-Institute for Legal history in Frankfurt am Main (Germany). He was also Director of the
Masters on “Comparison and legal translation”, Faculty of Law, University of Ferrara (2004),
Director of the “Centro studi e servizi sul diritto straniero e delle relazioni internazionali” of
the same University (2004-2009).
From 2007 he is Professor visitante at San Marcos University (Lima, Peru) and was visiting
Professor at the University of Bogota, Colombia (2006) and Montpellier, France (2005). In
2009 he was Director of the Summer school in European Legal History of the Max-PlanckInstitute for European Legal History, Frankfurt am Main, Germany, and in 2009-2011 he
obtained a Research Fellowship for experienced researchers of the Alexander von Humboldt
Foundation (Faculty of Law, Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany).
He is member of different Academic Societies, including: Académie Internationale de Droit
Comparé, Associazione italiana di diritto comparato (Board member), Arbeitsgemeinschaft
für die neueste Geschichte Italiens, Association Henri Capitant des amis de la culture juridique
française, Associazione Diritto pubblico comparator ed europeo, European Law Institute,
Gesellschaft für Rechtsvergleichung, Società italiana di storia del diritto.
Main research fields include Theory and History of comparative law, Nazi and fascist theory of
law, European private law, Consumer law, Globalization and theory of the state, Sovereign
debt restructuring.
During his fellowship at Max-Planck-Institute for European Legal History Alessandro Somma
took part in the coordination of many international projects. Among them: “Das Europa der
Diktatur - Wirtschaftskontrolle und Recht” and “Rechtssysteme im Vergleich. Forschungen zu
anglo-amerikanischen und kontinentaleuropäischen Justizverfassungen im 19. und 20.
Jahrhundert”. As Professor at the University of Ferrare he coordinated following projects:
“Mutazione giuridica e globalizzazione”, “Liberismo e solidarismo nella costruzione del diritto
contrattuale europeo”, “La giustizia sociale nel diritto europeo dei contratti”, “Diritto europeo
dei contratti e tecniche normative: le alternative al codice”, “Buona fede e tecniche di
redistribuzione della ricchezza”, “Diritto contrattuale globale: dalle nuove fonti del diritto dei
contratti al contratto come nuova fonte del diritto”, “Economia sociale di mercato e diritto
privato europeo”.
