Buona lettura! www.connessioni.biz Chiara Benedettini President & Editor in Chief Whilst drafting this edition of Connessioni, we concentrated a lot on international projects, which we will speak about at greater length in the next issue. However, we can give you a few highlights. From April 8th-10th, we were in Beijing for InfoComm China 2015, as part of our collaboration with InfoComm Asia, however this year we weren’t only there to visit the fair. We opened the first Chinese edition of AudioForum, our educational platform for the audio world: the speaker Mario Di Cola, accompanied by Francesco Mazzini, spoke about a series of components and methods of distribution in front of a large audience of local professionals. The event was supported by 18 Sound, Italian manufacturers of audio components and transducers, and was made possible thanks to the backing of InfoComm Asia. But that’s not all: we also established the first exhibition area dedicated to the brand Made in Italy, which we expect to grow in 2016 with the contribution of new Italian companies who want to seize market opportunities with double-digit growth. From the 15th-18th, it was the turn of PL+S, during which Messe Frankfurt announced the news and changes for next year: the fair will run from Tuesday until Friday, omitting Saturday. Beginning slightly later, it will run from 10am until 7pm and the event will switch venues with the pavilion traditionally used for the Musik Messe, which in 2016 will only overlap two days with PL+S. All the changes and organisation were brought about by requests from the exhibitors even if, rumours suggest, they weren’t all in agreement... we are beginning our investigations and will be able to tell you the full story in the coming months. And after our actual journey around the world, we are pleased to be able to present to you a virtual journey completed by the editorial team, back now, one year on, to investigate the universe of Digital Signage. A market which, as well as keeping its promises from 2014, has managed to surpass itself by interpreting and embodying the rapid changes which affect the relationship between the society and technology. As you will read in the interviews and investigative pieces, the ever growing and unstoppable digitalisation continues to blur boundaries between the consumer and professional world. Certainly not at the expense of technology: it is becoming more refined and complex, especially with regards to the hardware and software, and also with regards to how it is used. We will therefore discuss the end-user market, tendencies, requests and expectations, no longer so sparse on the visual communication front. Above all, we’ll be investigating the new role of DS, its many functions which are capable of addressing the various needs, thanks to the system integrator which can provide customization features, adapting itself each time to the vertical segment for which it was designed. We will also speak clearly about technology and about interesting case studies. In short, we bring you another issue of Connessioni which hopes to prove just how much we, as well as you, care about the success of this sector. Then it became the image itself, which, through technological means, expressed and contained the message being conveyed. Nowadays, in an ever increasingly image-based society, the message, the tools and the users amalgamate and merge within a system, as integral parts, which are in fact integrated. The new era of Digital Signage is upon us © Voome Networks In principio c'era il messaggio che, per meglio esplicitarsi, si appoggiava spesso a un'immagine. I progetti di comunicazione, in particolare nell’ambito del Digital Out of Home, richiedono massa critica e quindi investimenti notevoli. Optimistically, this trend has reached further afield than Europe, to the USA; one of the countries with the highest number of DS installations. Emerging countries, such as India, China, Brazil and other places in South America have also caught the DS bug. “You can enjoy high-tech features”, continued Russel, “and effective technology recognised by technology giants such as Samsung, LG Electronics and NEC, as far as the screens are concerned; it also gives more brand choice for mediaplayer and softwares.” Good news as well for our country (see Fig.1 and Fig. 2 at pag. 8), with positive outcomes with regards to both supply and demand, more than has ever been invested in research and staff. Despite the historical difficulties linked to bureaucratic lethargy”, explains Riccardo D’Angelo from AssoDS, an association which brings together Italian operators of Digital Signage, “AssoDA cooperates with OVAB Europe with the aim of the so-called Digital Signage Business Climate Index, a statistical indicator which follows the economic development of Digital Signage and Digital Out Of Home in Europe, based on responses from management of the most important companies in the sector. 20 Aprile April 2015 The latest surveys show strong market volatility, especially in the Italian market, which, I believe, highlights its weakness and fragmentation. The communication projects, especially in the field of Digital Out of Home, require a critical mass and sizeable investments. Small advertising networks established over the past few years, and the subsequent collapse of many of them, proves that a business model which relies on small, local advertisers is not a viable option. For this reason, I maintain that the most promising vertical markets specialising in brand awareness, in instore communication, particularly in mono-brand chains, are those where digital communication can be used in different ways in order to improve customer experience and to develop interesting multi-channel models.” Let’s see that we get to the bottom of this question. WHAT THE CLIENT IS ASKING An outpour of such positive figures can only mean that the parties involved are approaching Digital Signage in a different way. Emanuele Pollastri of Voome Networks is in agreement with this when he explains that, “the market is gradually growing; we are struggling less and less as far as customer relations are concerned, as well as developing projects, marking an important starting point. Admittedly, sometimes, especially in the retail sector, the client tends to base their opinion about DS on the cost, without asking themselves what is required for communication. On the other hand, DS is now well established and understood in the corporate world, even if there is still more work to be done in this field. It is important, for the sake of the sector, that no individual installations are created, as far as integrated and well thought through, unified communication projects are concerned, where DS can establish the exchange with other, more classic © HDDS Visual systems of communication. And if – as we have said – it is easier to understand on a corporate level, it is still based on a DS model designed to amaze. Of course, this is a good starting point, but now we must go above and beyond and ask ourselves what we can still achieve from investments in a videowall.” “The interest in digital has risen in all sectors”, confirms Comelli from M-Cube, “and the technology allows companies to make perfect use of their resources, processes and communication tools. In the retail sector, the possibilities are endless: digitalisation satisfies new customer trends and behaviours; nowadays it is therefore necessary to make the offer more integrated and consistent, combining online communication with that at the point of sale, in order to provide a one-of-a-kind customer experience throughout all communicative channels. In other words, we’re talking about an interactive AV experience using applications, such as in-store radio, Digital Signage and smartphones/tablets etc.” The increased usage of DS systems is also therefore due to a clearer view of the product on the side of the demand. This also applies for the technical side; at stake is not only what to communicate, but how to do it: Namely, in the most scenic, simple and effective way. “Increasingly thinner monitors, increasingly smaller frames, increasingly larger dimensions”, Gambarto from LG explains, “are the most significant trends. The integration of the functions, was, up until now, only available on Mediaplayers, as well as software for managing content. It is not a coincidence that, some time ago, LG introduced monitors equipped with a SoC, an operative webOS system, which guarantees easy usage and reliability – two words which frequently appear together, as the demand for cost-effective systems increases.” “From a technological point of view”, explains Pollastri of Voome, “the building blocks of DS remain the video devices, the infrastructure for documenting content and the managerial side. As far as video devices are concerned, LED has attracted a lot of interest; as far as the infrastructures are concerned, the new chip systems, which will be fitted into monitors (see Samsung and LG), don’t make the installation process any easier if specific requirements aren’t present, requiring specialist boxes such as SpinetiX. The demand for ease of usage is on the rise.” What are legitimate expectations of the ROI, once a key aspect of the business? “Talking in terms of ROI is always less effective”, says Pollastri of Voome, “given that a communication system is assessed by the overall ROI, not solely that relative to DS, which, above all, is now taking on more varied roles as supposed to a mere tool to boost sales.” www.connessioni.biz 21 © HDDS Visual SCENARI SCENARIES Simply introducing new models is no longer enough, Nowadays it is important to develop collaborations and partnerships, both with the clients and with other technology suppliers Presentare nuovi modelli non è più sufficiente, oggi è importante sviluppare collaborazioni e partnership sia con i clienti che con altri fornitori di tecnologia 22 Aprile April 2015 CREATING VALUE Communicating, boosting sales, enhancing production mechanisms, guaranteeing increasingly engaging experiences; the role of DS is ever more complex, changing, variable and tailor made to suit the requests all clients could possibly have of their technology provider. “Nowadays”, explains Voglioli from Dooh.it, “we aim to offer an engaging experience, not only thanks to the screen, but through interactive means; from touch screens to personal devices and software which updates continuously and controls movement or motion within the shop, sensing people’s movements as they pass. There are still more traditional communication projects on the market, but the trend is user experience and involvement. The end users are becoming more skilled and their requests are becoming more precise.” “DS is a way to involve people”, continued Riccardo D’Angelo from AssosDS. “The number of technologically advanced users has increased: they have a ‘multi-channel’ approach to the purchase of goods and services. Understanding and satisfying these needs, therefore, means taking advantage of all Digital Signage has to offer, making it a powerful tool in the broader sphere of communication and proximity of digital marketing. This progress has been marked by anonymous face detection, which consists of setting the content display in relation to the person looking at the screen at that moment. But that’s not all; it can implement various logical solutions according to the weather, the status of the warehouse, historic models and predictions, thanks to advanced analysis and big data. In short, everything that is useful for capturing the client’s attention, using a relative message and targeted involvement.” SCENARI SCENARIES SMART PHONE AND DEVICES In line with the claim that DS is one of the various tools with which users, of all levels, are used to interacting, we had to focus on the its role alongside personal devices, items which have now become physical extensions of our everyday lives. “The Digital Signage is now gradually disengaging from the parameters that until recently identified it as a simple tool of visual communication for advertising purposes – explains Maurizio Bellisi of Comm-Tec. In addition to the promotional uses, in fact, the future of DS will be to embrace in a complete way the sphere of interaction, returning greater functionality to display installed in the various contexts of use. This new connotation implicates mobile devices, through which interact with the panels, requiring information, modifying the content in real time by querying the system at will on different themes of interest, etc. Remains evident, therefore, that the DS is open to a lots of uses, even management. this aspect binds the world of advertising communication to that of information.” Comazzi from HDDS Visual supports this claim: “Customers are demanding interaction with personal devices, but it is not yet clear what can be done. On the one hand, there are infinite possibilities; on the other hand, the little control we have is subject to these possibilities. A current trend, already driving the selfie-craze, is that of connecting the logo or brand of social platforms through devices: for example, I try on some clothes in a shop changing room and publish the photo on my social media platforms, thus publicising the brand or shop. It is still very difficult to go beyond this point.” © M -Cube “When we began speaking about DS”, concludes Maurizio Vacca from 3G Electronics, “we spoke about it in communication and business terms. The systems were designed to increase customer sales, or rather to become the market leaders in third-party advertising. Over time, we realised that we couldn’t take this all for granted and we turned DS into a complex, multi-channel communication system, to be looked at based on the clients’ needs.” 24 Aprile April 2015 t® screenin CONTENT Crucial for the international success of the DS project and at its core is the content, which has always been a blessing and a curse for the market which in turn, before with difficulty and now with renewed strength, has successfully managed to work on both technical and cultural aspects. Let’s begin with the technical possibilities; there are already many systems in circulation which offer predesigned layouts and templates, which are easy to customise. Alternatively, there is the integrated system which not only sells technology, but guarantees a continuous service of customisation and support. It remains to be seen what key points are necessary to communicate, therefore the advertising campaign must not concentrate solely on one message, but instead must stem from a clear objective: What do I hope to achieve? “In the past”, explains Florian Rotberg from Invidis, “even when targeting creative agencies, it was difficult to explain the specifics in understandable terms to make DS an attractive feature; we were still living in the TV era, so we were talking about 30 second adverts. In order to capture the attention of a passer-by, the message had to reach its maximum impact within three seconds. In general, content was created without first assessing this point. Lastly, this must all be adapted to current expectations of our users, who are used to touch controls, high resolution and no distortion between the content and the format.” “The real surprise from the past year”, concludes Pollastri of Voome, “is that, if before it was possible to explain to a company how they should set-up and manage the project, nowadays they understand straight away both the potential of a different output format and the technology behind it. Many of them continue to work with traditional advertising. The ‘know how’ is becoming more widespread with regards to the creation of suitable content. People no longer believe that all methods hold the same value, but instead they concentrate on the problems of context, means, message and objective.” screenin t® screenin t® “Today’s communication, quick and instant”, clarifies Maurizio Vacca from 3G, “has changed our way of life and working. Personal devices are privileged tools which let customers know how their investment is being used; however, we are still in the early stages and there is no clear, precise legislation about what can be done or not in order to achieve results without violating privacy laws.” “A trend seen in all user devices”, concludes Daniel Russel from Invidis, “is to provide QR codes, or social media triggers for advertising campaigns, or instead to provide Apps for customization in business fields. An example of the latter is when you plan to purchase a car and are able to request certain personalised features. Nevertheless, even if the increased number of Smartphones has led to a digital transformation in many fields, the creation of multi and omni-channels is still a rare occurrence. This is partly due to the cost of the hardware, but mainly due to the lack of good quality content.” A N A I L A IT R INDUST EI ZIO D I V R E S AL A/V ’ L L E D I T S I N O I S S E F O R P ENGINEERED LIKE NO OTHER SCREEN IN THE WORLD READY www.connessioni.biz A IC N A C C IA ME Euroscreen Srl Via Stiria, 45/16 33100 Udine [email protected] www.screenint.com Harkness Powered by SCENARI SCENARIES R&D Quite clearly, it is impossible to conclude our analysis of the market without further looking at the current and future market trends in terms of DS technology. Though the offer appears to be complete, history has taught us that progress is a physiological necessity for the market outcome. “Simply introducing new models is no longer enough”, confirms Gambarato from LG. “Nowadays it is important to develop collaborations and partnerships, both with the clients and with other technology suppliers. Understanding clients’ needs means finding the best solutions, while sharing designs means helping the client to find achievable and sustainable solutions. In addition, it is important to ensure a high level of customisation, even in simple systems.” “Stand alone solutions, so to speak”, continues Bellisi, “will be increasingly sought after, but at the same time, the decreased cost of hardware will increase potential opportunities and services, generating a big distinction between the high-profile market and that on an average level.” “The client is interested in having easy-to-use functions. They seek reliability and added value thanks to the operators. And lastly, they want to invest in a needsbased system, which is open to further progress. I’m referring to 4K, which we hear a lot about, although there isn’t a vast amount of available content”, concludes Alberto Comazzi from HDDS Visual. “With regards to 4K”, explains Maurizio Vacca from 3G Electronics, “supply and demand is looking ready to invest in solutions which promote it, also thanks to modern software which optimises the available bandwidth. In addition to the large-dimension monitors, videowalls and large areas, stimulate the development of applications also very complex. They facilitate the spread of systems in a horizontal manner and no longer vertical, through specific, increasingly interactive solutions. We therefore have a growing market, which is not yet industrialised. We are missing a similar approach to solutions, however it is likely that with the dip in prices, there is still much that can be done. Expo will be a great opportunity to showcase DS solutions. We will see beautiful and interesting things.” “For the future, I envisage”, explains Vogliolo from Dooh.it, “a mix of different technologies, which are integrated in large-scale communication projects. Augmented reality, Digital Signage, content sharing, social media interaction, but also wearable technology and Internet of Things. In short, the fact that users and their environments are being brought closer together thanks to technological support will transform Digital Signage into something new and more similar to the world of events, where the key is involvement and user experience. SCENARI SCENARIES © Invidis CONCLUSIONS To summarise the points raised in this article, it is only natural to wonder how and in which direction the market will make its next move. The definitive step which defines DS, not in future prospects, but as the only possible way forward in terms of the development of communication, is that directed towards sales, information, entertainment or towards the communication of any sort of message. With positive market figures and statistics, a better understanding of the tools – now invested in a new role, aimed at creating a complete user experience – from the clients’ point of view, ad hoc content made accessible thanks to constantly evolving and widely used tools, means that DS represents the crucial link between the professional and consumer worlds. A hybrid world, where the client and user speak to one another, benefitting from each other’s information, thanks to technology no longer categorised in a professional or consumer way, but defined by the term prosumer. Without losing sight of our role as ‘interpreters’, we return to the professional industry, which invests in the DS universe and can be sure that there is much which can be done to strengthen the field. 28 Aprile April 2015 “The success”, concludes Russel, “depends greatly on how we present ourselves. With the correct partners alone, it is possible to obtain the desired results; we must be ready to communicate with IT departments and, at the same time, with the heads of marketing. The hardware and software suppliers must overcome the stalemate in the competition to lower prices and begin to work again on variety and the strength of system solutions on offer. Integrators are able to dominate a large section of the production chain; aside from the installation and operational technicians, they can take charge of content management, from customisation of the software to the supply of training and support. Even the demand for the producers is on the increase, especially thanks to the growth of Video Wall solutions, which require specific outlines. In short, every department ought to work hard, but, more importantly, they need to work together, in the interests of the client. They can act as the contact for the client, thanks to agreements and partnerships which guarantee systems integration, but above all, guarantee a wealth of expertise to satisfy the customer. Lastly, DS entry-level solutions will be in high demand. They have already been introduced onto the market, but only a few years ago, for small, yet growing companies. It is worth providing these clients with high-quality, technologically advanced products.” Oltre a amplificatori Montarbo, Mixer Yamaha MG16 e radiomicrofoni BeyerDynamic. 32 Aprile April 2015 soluzioni solutions This isn’t the first time that Connessioni has brought you an article related to systems installed in airports. These are now familiar territories, where, whether for pleasure or necessity, we are used to spending our time waiting, for more or less short periods of time. For this reason, airports, particularly in Duty Free sections, now resemble real commercial, shopping areas, hosting many presentations and new product launches, often in very technologically advanced environments. In line with this trend, last year, Elettromeccanica Bustese, general contractor of all technological systems (lighting, electrics, audio, multi-media, etc) of the new Duty Free in Malpensa T1, international departures (T3), was commissioned to supply and install a videowall on the main entrance wall of the commercial space. Massimo Smaniotto from Elettronica Bustese involved the Systems Integrators Gianazza Antonio of Signorelli Cesare SNC, with whom he had already worked on a number of installations, in order to find an effective technical solution which would satisfy both the brand and the design studio, the Italian-Spanish Dufry, managers of most of the duty free spaces in national and international airports, and also the project manager on this project (although the end customer remains Dufry Italia). Dufry, therefore, supplied the layout template – much more of an architectural design than a technical one –indicating the surfaces to cover with the videowall and requesting to create partially perpendicular columns – slightly sloping compared to the floor level – in order to create a sort of wave effect. The look is to be completed with glossed bordering between the columns and a covering with integrated spotlights. Over the months, various options were evaluated, from a LEDwall to edge-blending projections, in order to create a wall configured 5 x 4, through a 60-inch monitor.” “Some time”, Gianazza explains, “was used to research suitable monitors which could serve our purposes. The 60-inch from Sharp was the best solution in terms of satisfying the customer’s requests without compromising on quality and not neglecting the scenic effect these monitors produce. They are, after all, the current marketleaders. In addition to having examined factors such as brightness and image quality, the videowall had to be able to operate without a hitch for many hours a day, every day of the week. Moreover, thanks to a second player, the system won’t stop working if there is problem, or at least the main system.” “At the time of testing”, Gianazza continues, “we were impressed by the quality obtained using the LOOP DVI: right away, the performance was highly satisfactory, without needing to adjust the colourimeter. In addition, the resolution, 1,366 x 768, of the panels over such an extensive area, proved to be a success in terms of pixels/grainy effect. All of the mechanical installation (including push-pull brackets and the 60-inch monitor) and electrics was carried out by technical professionals from Elettromeccanica Bustese; behind the wall, a large technical space was created, for easier management and space for the wiring. Lastly, the monitors have been programmed with an automatic switch-on/switch-off function. CONTENT MANAGEMENT The particular format of the videowall (5 x 4 monitors), definitely not standard compared to more classic ones, has created a series of complications in terms of managing he signals, requiring the help again of Elettromeccanica Bustese, Signorelli and a technical consultant from Sharp. Both solutions with modular matrices and with single Digital Signage players (one per monitor) were tested, but they all proved to be overly complicated to manage and subject to problems with synchronisation and quality of the projected image. In the end, in order to meet the customer’s needs and have ‘automatic’ management of the layouts and content (regardless of the format), the partnership with HDDS Vision was called upon, the same company who had supplied the player and Datapath DL-4, which, through cloud, follow the content management. Datapath are directly connected to the HDMI inputs on each monitor. There are 5 DV4 slave Datapath, each Datapath manages four monitors, connected to a DL-8 master Datapath, which in turn receives signals from the HDDS player. As has already been said, there is a backup player ready to use in case of malfunction, but also in the case of live events and guests. Management through Datapath gave way to sending higher resolution signals and, in particular, allowed for more precise and flexible management. The aspect ratio of the wall, given that it’s 5x4 and not a standard 16:9, means that content must be created ad hoc, or in any case, managed from the HDDS cloud and corresponding player connected to the Datapath. Thanks to the Datapath and the HDDS management, the displayed content can be chosen and selected in real time; it can broadcast weather forecasts, loops, adverts or flight-related information. The various areas of the videowall can also be controlled: the HDDS software operates single monitors and, for example, two different videos, for two halves of the wall, can be uploaded and screened, while the corresponding Datapath optimise the pixel quality. Finally, the system can support video resolutions up to 4K. AUDIO A sound system was installed on completion of the wall, so that soundtracks of the videos could also be broadcast, not forgetting live events, such as advertising campaigns or anything else. The ‘essential’ system had to be easy to use, but at the same time, have high performance qualities: four, two-way, Montarbo speakers were installed above the structure, and about 5 metres further forward from the wall, to be used as front-of-house to cover a space measuring 300/400 sq. Other times, however, the comparison is made, on-site, and becomes a cause for complaint and frustration. The reason? Not everything that is beautiful is technologically achievable, and the architects (or whomever is in charge of the aesthetics of the project) don’t always take into account which changes and complications are involved in choosing one solution over another. REVERSE Gianfranco Cantieri’s vision, the head of Reverse – barbistro situated on the ground floor of Palazzo Visacci, which was built in the sixteenth century as the Albizi’s family home, before their expulsion from Florence, and has been restored on various occasions – was to create a warm, welcoming place in the city, which could become a popular spot for breakfast or a work lunch, or simply to a place to spend a relaxing afternoon sipping a cup of tea, or enjoying an aperitivo, or even become a favourite place for the local nightlife scene. In fact, the surrounding area is full of offices, shops and monuments and tourist attractions, which explains the thousands of passersby every day. “In order to make my bar-bistro adaptable to different times and moments during the day”, explains Cantieri, “the architecture studio, Archea, which I hired, suggested that the atmosphere could be created with the use of modular lighting and innovative new technologies. I also liked the idea of creating something immersing and engaging, which would be able to attract customers as they passed by the window.” Therefore, a multi-media solution plan began to form, which included various screens installed in different areas of the bar-bistro and a video wall, developed horizontally and visible from the street outside. The changing content on this wall changes depending on the time of day. Initially, the studio Archea worked with the Florentine Tecnoconference, who could offer experience and suggested the use of Samsung monitors: three 70-inch monitors placed in different areas of Reverse and six 55inch narrow bezel monitors to create the video wall on the central wall of the bar-bistro. 40 Aprile April 2015 The first difficulty was here, namely to adapt the contents to the specific shape of the video wall (about 4,5 x 1,28 metres) without distorting the shape or lose out on resolution. In fact, Reverse had to ask an agency to carry out the work and post-production. Not only this, but a second and more major difficulty presented itself in the demands of the owner, which were pretty precise; the video wall would have to transmit classic content in digital signage mode, but if need be, it should be capable of broadcasting across the whole surface area, or in parts of it, content coming from the Sky box or PC. In fact, the possibility of showing sporting events from the TV was a big plus, which the owner was keen not to lose and, in addition, the idea was to be able to rent out the space to third-parties for meetings or other occasions where it might be necessary to share video documents as power points or text files, or other content. This last requirement made the normal integrated software in the monitors insufficient and required a specific control unit which could handle three different modes: digital signage for thematic videos, presentations and Sky. It was at this point that Tecnoconference decided to bring in the Milanese company, 3G Electronics, distributors specialised in Digital Signage and video wall solutions. THE SYSTEM “The difficulty”, explains Stefano Gallo Gorgatti from 3G Electronics, “was how to centrally manage the monitors both vertically and horizontally, as if they were one action. We therefore suggested a control system, which we would usually use for control rooms, based on the Matrox Mura boards. These have DVI inputs and outputs and control the video wall as a single monitor, where the inputs can be visualised as positioned windows.” More specifically, two DS Brightsign XD 230 players were installed in the six monitors, because for every three, an area of almost 16:9 (resolution 3,200 x1,920) is reached. In this sense, every player manages and synchronises three of the six monitors. Finally, a third player syncs the monitors which are scattered around the room, broadcasting the same content. With regards to connecting the visualisation system to Sky, two inputs were used (one for redundancy) on the boards, a play signal for vertical monitors and one for horizontal monitors, so that it can handle the broadcasting of content, either centrally on the video wall or in the window, without discarding the thematic videos. Broadcasting from a laptop was dealt with in the same manner. Once the required needs had been fulfilled, it became necessary to teach the owner, partners and employees of the bar-bistro how to manage and control the system. The control unit is equipped with 3G, which, as was mentioned earlier, is usually used in control rooms, where we can presume the user is pretty digitally and technologically savvy. The solution was found thanks to Mura Control which allows you to create multiple layouts; in other words, you can manage and save every entry how you like. There were therefore more default possible options, to match up with the needs expressed by the client. Lastly, thanks to a software developed by 3G on web pages called Web Control, the various layouts can be called up via simple buttons, which you can access through your laptop, PC or any kind of smart device. “It was very satisfying”, concludes Gorgatti, “to create exactly what the owner had wanted. Very often we find ourselves in discussions with people, architects, but also end users, who have great, original ideas, but who don’t realise the difficulties involved in technically creating something, which to them is so simple and clear in their minds. In this sense, it was very important that we could meet in our demo room in Milan. That way, it was possible for them to see first-hand what possibilities we could offer, and for us, to check how coherent their vision was. The installation in Reverse is a good example of when technology thought up for different applications, can still come together to create a very specific, particular vision, without risking the investment of the customer, which is what often happens when there is a lack of technological understanding.” Unfortunately, we know little or nothing about the audio system, designed separately from the video installation and put into place by an electrician supplied by the architectural studio. soluzioni solutions www.essedisrl.eu www.voome.it DS DI CLASSE A TORINO Nella storica sede di Reale Mutua STYLISH DS IN TURIN - In the historic setting of Reale Mutua La hall della storica sede di Torino di Reale Mutua Assicurazioni diventa un elegante set per l’immagine a schermo. Commissioned at the end of 2014, the Digital Signage installation is a multi-screen system, through which a quantity of AV information, always in motion, can be attractively viewed Immagini fisse, video, dati, grafica, accompagnati da musica, effetti sonori e parlato erano i contenuti che il sistema doveva trasmettere in una cornice storica assai prestigiosa. Static images, videos, information, graphics, accompanied by music and sound and speech effects, makes up the content which the system ought to transmit, within the walls of this prestigious, historic landmark. Essedi and Voome Networks were chosen to take charge of the requests: in addition to high quality images for the screen, an elegant and modern setting had to be achieved. “The client”, explains Alessandro Azzarone, head technician at Essedi, “wanted a reliable Digital Signage system, using network control in order to synchronise content on various different screens. Implementing an easy way to manage the audio devices and screens, makes it easier to perform troubleshooting and manage power control scheduling.” THE SOLUTION The entrance halls have therefore been made over, and now boast twelve monitors: two measuring 75”, which run on a constantly updated schedule, full of historical information and marketing. Every LCD monitor is accompanied by a SpinetiX player, model HMP130 and HMP-200, because they are robust and easy to use: it’s not based on a PC, it has no moving parts and it doesn’t require servicing, therefore simplifying the general management. At the heart of the installations lies a software, Voome 4 Corporate, from Voome Networks, easy to upgrade from the latest release, Jade, which resolves the 44 Aprile April 2015 problem of the synchronisation of content between various screens and the network control of it all, also including scheduling and power control features. The professional software platform, Voome 4 Corporate, allows staff at Reale Mutua to manage the content across all screens, directly from personal devices such as tablets or Smartphones. A built-in diagnostics section gives control of the hardware (which runs smoothly) to the IT department at Reale Mutua, who control it all via the browser. THE PLATFORM Gabriele Formenti, Technical Director of Voome Networks explains to us: “The Client wanted the infrastructure to be able to grow in the future, so that far away braches in Italy could be included. Therefore, the initial brief requested scalability and reliability, the possibility to control the multimedia players and all from a centralised system, whether that is for scheduling the content to be displayed on the screens or for the other various branches in the future.” The Voome 4 Corporate central platform gives you this control, and much more, given that it is equipped with a user programme scheduling system, divided into Administrators and Editors, who are able to edit the content to send to the videos. The system is based on a CMS, in the style of a website, visualising the output on the monitor screens and video projectors. The programme scheduler will be sent to users through the network and then they can download the necessary content and communicate their status to the server. This choice reduces the load on the server, where the platform continues to run and undoubtedly simplifies the network configuration; given that the user contacts the server, and not the other way round, there are minimal network configurations. In the headquarters, and then when the branches also become part of the network, every user will be assigned the server address; the same user can then contact the server with a continuous ‘poll’ every 15/30 seconds to verify that the content has been updated. In this case, the user only downloads the Delta version of the new project –in other words, only the changes to the programme. Then it is possible to also work off-line. The data usage on the network is improved and users have to deal with minimal configuration processes, unless the server contacts the user. In that case, Firewall configurations come into play and it all becomes more complicated to manage for the IT and security departments.Reale Mutua is therefore able to choose, find, create and produce some of the content: audio, video and static and moving images, graphics and potentially some video and audio streams. A series of graphic templates allow employees to create pages that will be displayed on the monitors. A control system kicks in, automatically validating the accuracy of the information entered and then notifies the user of their accuracy and completion level, displaying the incorrect content as pending before allowing these pages to be scheduled- when and where, in all branches or only in some, on which monitors and in a continuous cycle or not. After having defined the architecture of the whole network, dividing monitors into areas, branches, zones, regions and cities, the “granularity” of the individual monitor, this also checks that multi-media files are correct. There is also the interaction with social media; posts from the various platforms are displayed in real time and without leaving the system. Each SpinetiX receiver has an internal memory on a compact flash or SD card and on board also provides a clever service that allows the software, Voome 4 Corporate, to interact in real time with the media player itself. soluzioni solutions THE FUTURE In general, a DS system like this promises interesting future developments within a company. In fact, in addition to centralising the management of DS where it is needed, it can also provide some additional services to users, for example via the no queue system. The media players can be contacted in real time via the management software and then display screen messages, providing an integrated management of other services, such as that of the queue system above, or interfaced with devices that can issue tickets and more. All these functions can be activated centrally from headquarters, or within the branch parallel to the scheduling programme. With the completion of the installation of a central software platform on the client’s server (which, for security reasons is not accessible from the outside), it is the customer himself who sets everything up without any more intervention from the middleman. The training lasts only a few hours or, at most, half a day. Ecco Samsung: dalle prossime strategie commerciali all'Expo Milano 2015 passando, appunto, per il Digital Signage SAMSUNG Tutor dell’innovazione Teaching innovation It’s impossible to speak about Digital Signage without mentioning one of the companies which – according to the statistics and studies from the field – appears among the top three in sales of monitors and displays. This is Samsung: starting with the upcoming business strategies before arriving at Expo 2015, Samsung will be moving over to Digital Signage incontri meeting www.samsung.com Text: Valentina Bartarelli Evoluzione e innovazione sono le parole d'ordine di Samsung per il 2015. L'obiettivo? 49 Evolution and innovation are Samsung’s key words for 2015. What’s the goal? To be an increasingly conscientious partner for companies in our country, which look to technology in order to meet the necessary conditions to compete on the open market. Sergio Ceresa, Head of Enterprise Business Division of Samsung Electronics Italia, explains in a short interview. Connessioni - Samsung is a multinational company actively engaged in many sectors; is there a slogan or a central theme which links them all? Sergio Ceresa - Nowadays, our company is becoming increasingly diversified, consolidating more and more, including our very own B2B programme, but not only: our interests have turned towards the public and private Country System, so to the corporate world, but also towards Public Administration, as well as the healthcare and education sectors. We no longer only offer a single product to an individual, but instead we offer solutions to meet development and innovation needs of Italian companies. As far as the latter is concerned, we play an important role, that of the tutor, fostering technological innovation for growth, energy saving and development. This also applies in the field of communication, which goes from being static to being digital, and also for collaborative work, enabling ‘smart working’ and allowing employees to work connected to a system which is always live. C - What is Samsung’s business plan for Italy and Europe in 2015? SC - As I said before, we will be focusing more on the B2B segment, adding value to businesses, because we can provide solutions for mobility and networking, given that we have the great advantage of allowing them to test our products. Samsung Electronics Italia is drawing ever closer to Italian territory and therefore closer to the PA Forum, to schools and hospitals in addition to the companies. Our main goal for 2015 is to continue to foster innovation by introducing our most advanced technologies into the main social-economic areas of life, thus contributing to the growth of the country. C - Digital Signage is a very important part of your business, partially thanks to the partnership with other companies. Could you tell us about this strategy and where the idea came from? SC - Our first objective is to help businessmen and women understand the importance of digital communication, since it is a tool capable of creating customer involvement, which, in turn, leads to an increase in sales. For example, our Digital Signage systems not only attract customers into the bar, but significantly contribute to maximising consumer experience. This can also be done by using our displays which transform a simple television monitor into a multi-function entertainment centre thanks to the set of integrated applications. 50 Aprile April 2015 C - Do you have statistical data from the visual market? Or what are your impressions? Which are the most promising vertical markets? SC - The LFD market continues to grow year on year. Without a doubt we’re talking about a figure which encourages many resellers to explore new possibilities which come hand-in-hand with Digital Signage. Important developments in this sector are due to the embedding of intelligence inside the monitors themselves, allowing us to combine the product with Digital Signage solutions. The market is reflecting an increase in sales of monitors larger than 55 inches. This phenomenon is driven by the use of large-size, professional monitors in meeting rooms, which replace overhead projectors, in schools, where they now use interactive white boards (equipped with a touch screen function), as well as replacing small video walls. The Italian market, however, still largely controls the trade of monitors measuring between 40 and 50 inches, making up 50% of total sales. C - From a technological view point, what should we expect in the near future? What is the research concentrating on? SC - 4K resolution is beginning to crop up in the market of displays and, without a doubt, LFD will also have a starring role. High-brightness screens (from 3,000 to 5,000 nits) will be on offer to satisfy communication demands in high external light environments. Integrated processors will become increasingly powerful to allow for more complex graphics. C - What does DS technology represent today; a means of communication or a business tool? What benefits can the end users expect? SC - The modern consumer is inundated with increasingly pervasive adverts, therefore we believe it’s important to give customers a moment of personal experimentation before buying, where the product can be tried and tested ‘live’ and customized to meet the requirements of the customer. In this respect, the ‘Digital Signage’ represents a highly effective solution: as global leaders in the Large Format Display sector, Samsung has come up with innovative solutions –from video walls to information totems, from touch screens to video communication systems, which exploit the potential of mobile devices –containing built-in application software exclusively developed by our partners – which no longer require the customer to adapt to the hardware or available software, but precisely the opposite. C - Samsung is a partner of Expo: what do you expect from the event and why did Samsung decide to sponsor it? SC - Samsung Electronics Italia is the Official Global Edutainment Partner of Expo Milano 2015. We will be providing cutting-edge services and solutions to create a more engaging and customized experience for all visitors at the Universal Exhibition. Samsung’s contribution is crucial for the development of the Digital Smart City theme of Expo Milano 2015. More specifically, our Digital Signage solutions are a defining part of this partnership. Visual communication will play an important role for all Expo visitors. Over the years, we have conversed with middlemen, more or less in the technical field, and this has allowed us to gain experience in identifying and spotting the properties required for designing various reality systems. C - Who is your target market? AC - Due to our experience and flexibility we have managed to meet with installers and designers, but also with end users who have a pretty good idea about what they need and with whom, we have managed to establish profitable and longlasting business relations. Perhaps you need to start with a small installation in order to then delve into more ambitious projects. Our technical scope, alongside our communication possibilities in the broad sense, doesn’t have any limits. C - A cosa state lavorando adesso? Created in 2008, and completely devoted to Digital Signage since 2012, HDDS Vision is a company which develops software platforms for content management. Software and complete solutions are made possible thanks to those who manage to become the sole middlemen for their clients, not only acting as their technology suppliers but also as consultants, installers and faithful partners, as well as being efficient in customer support. “The rapid spread of Digital Signage”, explains Alberto Comazzi, one of the two head founders of HDDS Vision, “convinced us, in 2012, to concentrate on this form of communication, joining the market not as retailers, but rather as developers of solutions created ad hoc. Thanks to our own company, small but well structured and of great importance to both myself and my colleague Davide Sfiligoi, both developers – one commercial and one graphic – we developed two different platforms for managing content from remote locations. One is dedicated to touch systems and the other for non-touch systems. They can both be moulded according to the customer’s desired needs. Thus far, we have successfully dealt with all requests. Connessioni - What do you think are your strong points? AC - The fact that we can offer a high level of customisation is one of the reasons we do well in the market; we seek to give our clients our full attention and focus on their needs. www.connessioni.biz C - How is your work going in Italy? AC - We have partnerships with distributors and retailers in the areas of Italy we are unable to cover with internal staff. In general, we always seek to directly speak to one another in order to ensure ad hoc customer care and assistance. In our line of work, it is important to introduce yourself, shakes hands and show-off what the system has to offer. We often organise customised demonstrations where our initiatives can be tested and an understanding of how they can be used and tailor-made can be developed. In addition, in our catalogue, ‘all in one’ solutions are also available, made up of small bases and totems designed in response to requests from Digital Signage bars, where through USBs you can upload content onto small PCs and manage your advertising and publicity, creating schedules or launching the adverts randomly. These are solutions created for a certain type of client who is fastacting, not demanding and technologically at a basic, but effective level. Other times, the solutions are found whilst speaking with the clients. For example, we created a web radio system for a bank. The client needed to be able to directly broadcast the programmes, but also wanted to allow the various other branches to connect to the radio network and listen to it using the already-existing audio system. It was a simple, low cost job for which the client rated us very highly. C - What are you working on now? What do you think clients will be requesting in the future? AC - We always make sure we can implement the solutions we offer, although we are also interested in maintaining our approach, which entails working on the reliability of our base systems, giving us a very wide range of customisation tools. We have seen that 90% of the requests are standard ones, but there is always a 10% margin which varies from time to time. We want to become more effective in replying and resolving the more specific and particular requests. Right now, we are working on recording and analysing the data on our systems, traits already present in Touch tools and which we are working to include in the other. In short, as we have said, our goal is to satisfy and predict the market needs and deal with them as quickly as possible. HDDS VISION The HDDS Vision project began in 2008 with the creation of a software – nowadays available in version 4.0 – which makes best use of what professional, last generation screens, including touch ones, can offer. Facciamo il punto Text: Matteo Fontana 54 Aprile April 2015 We know that technology is involved in a process of continuous evolution, development and endless research. Digital Signage plays a part in this scenario – multi-media communication has established itself almost everywhere, over the past years, instead of billboards and is now facing a constant turnover of its role and abilities. NOTA* http://digital-signage-italia.com/2011/10/17/marketing-diprossimita-cloud-marketing/ http://digital-signage-italia.com/2011/05/03/marketingprossimita/ Let’s start with a fact, or at least what I believe to be a fact, and which I suggest you take as such: Digital Signage is already outdated. What’s more: Digital Signage was created old, in the sense that by implementing AV technology in shops, in waiting rooms, generally in meeting places and places of transit, it had already sown the seeds of its own destruction. I picture the future in terms of the film, “Blade Runner”: an “old” future, decrepit, decadent, made out of crumbling buildings, perennial acid rain, and darkness. The exact opposite of utopian futures, filled with brightness and hope, futures where we will live in comfort and carry out, with ease, a series of actions, which right now still cost us time and effort. So, let’s compare Digital Signage to the future in “Blade Runner”. The Digital Signage idea was groundbreaking for a very short period of time, because the evolution of technology related to videos is so quick, that it makes an application (because this is what we’re talking about) like Digital Signage impossible in the long term – without putting it into practice. If, a few years ago, a small player could hold and broadcast a modest playlist of films or static images, connected to one or more monitors, it was something remarkable. These days, the very concept of Digital Signage has evolved and you run the risk that a configuration of this type will no longer satisfy the public. NOT COMMUNICATED, BUT MEASURED The bottom line is that Digital Signage is not and has never been only digital advertising, as was once thought. It is true, however, that is has been applied in this way, many times. As a novel way to replace a billboard with new, dynamic content, displaying more or less the same information as the billboard, adding perhaps, thanks to Picture in Picture, public service information – such as weather forecasts, the news, scrolling breaking news – capable of holding the viewer’s attention and allowing the advert to wash over them with ease. Now we’ll start to clarify my, slightly cutting, statement: being old, is in fact Digital Signage moving in one direction, where it has one and only interest to communicate a message (advertising or other). Its evolution, now continuously growing, is interactive Digital Signage or, better still, bi-directional. In interactive Digital Signage, the screen ‘reacts’ to the presence of the viewer, for example, changing content or leaving it to the viewer to select what to watch (touch screen), or switching on or off depending on whether people are present or not. In bi-directional Digital Signage, in addition to what has been said, it goes one step further: the display doesn’t just give you some content, but it collects and records the information from the viewer, before identifying the age, sex, stature etc of the person. It is here that Digital Signage has taken a decisive step forward in its evolution, becoming a two-faced tool, or – although the image might be a little over the top – a double edged sword. To recap, Digital Signage is no longer solely a form of communication, but also measurable. Thanks to the hot topics shown on the screens and monitors dotted around shops, you can create precise statistics of the flow of people, their average age and their level of attention with regards to the advert on display. By the ‘end point’ of the processing and broadcasting of the advert, Digital Signage becomes the link in a much larger chain, which unfolds in both directions, towards and from the viewer. www.connessioni.biz THE FOUR STAGES There is an interesting definition of the experiential digital cycle of clients in the shop, coined by Riccardo D’Angelo, who refers to it as the life cycle of proximity marketing.* The first phase of the’ life cycle’, which from now on we will call Digital Signage 2.0, is the attraction. Above all, the display should attract the visitor’s attention. The second phase is interaction: or directly, using a touch screen, for example, or automatically, through the use of proximity sensors and face-detection software, interaction is creation between the spectator and the display screen. This leads us onto the third phase: customisation of content. The message displayed on the screen changes in real time depending on who is looking at it: whether it’s a man or a woman, an adult or a child. The range of messages (very different from one another), broadens the advertising scope, making it more precise. We no longer rely on predetermined playlists, changeable as often as you like, but nevertheless tied to a fixed sequence and unchangeable in real time. The fourth phase, and the most innovative one, is the measurement. Since interaction automatically generates feedback, the information collected will be recorded as statistical data, on a cloud for example, where it will remain for as long as you like (usually, a few months) and available for marketing experts to access. The data will be analysed and used in programming keys for future communication campaigns. Obviously, an objection raises its head: where does privacy fit into all of this, as guaranteed by the laws with which you have been working over the past years? It isn’t at risk, because the data registration systems work purely on statistics. In other words, it has nothing to do with databases containing names, surnames or faces, but instead with software, which works within the guidelines of gender and presumed age (stemming from, for example, the stature observed by the display detection). In short, an anonymous facial analysis is carried out for the purposes of collecting dynamic content. What can be done with information collected in this manner? There are extensive possibilities, because we’re not talking about a sort of more sophisticated Auditel where we will then be content knowing who has looked at it and for how long. It is about discovering which age group is most interested in specific content, and above all – crosschecking various data – it is about gathering unexpected business information, which you otherwise wouldn’t be privy to. For example, information linked to the various hours when customers entered the shop, or how customers’ tastes and interests change, according to unforeseeable factors, such as... the weather or the temperature. Weather conditions can in fact, be a reference point when changing content in real time, and a way to always aim for better communication. 59 TECNOLOGIA TECHNOLOGY Digital Signage AND PROXIMITY MARKETING It was found that what we were calling Digital Signage 2.0 moves in two directions (providing content and registering information): let’s see how this can be achieved at a technical level. Basically, it is about different forms of technology based on the so-called proximity marketing, which could be defined as the ‘container’ with which our Digital Signage 2.0 is contained, which is one possible application. Proximity marketing is a kind of marketing based on communication between devices (computer, monitor, Smartphone...), thanks to technologies such as NFC (Near Field Communication), RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification), Face Detection etc... The most commonly used is the NFC technology, which is based on two-way, short-range wireless connectivity (for instance, we are dealing with a few tens of centimetres) which enables a device to send and receive information or advertising material. A problem with this group of technlogy – based on the communication equipment – is the lack of the human element: a technological mediation is provided, not welcomed by all, which consists of receiving files on your mobile device, which then must be consulted in order to obtain the desired information. Just think about iBeacon – for the sake of a practical example – launched by Apple in their stores: it consists of a proximity sensor that generates a Bluetooth, wireless network, through which it is possible – only using your iPhone connected to the wireless network and the specific App – to receive information or advertising. Not moving far from the basic proximity marketing technologies, which require the presence of a suitable device, within a defined radius, Digital Signage 2.0 regardless of the receiving device, can concentrate more on the person. For a two direction Digital Signage, firstly, there’s no need for heavy hardware. In actual fact, the ‘old’ Digital Signage can easily be converted to the newer, 2.0 version, by adding a device to displays, already installed in the space, essentially made up of a micro-camera (as small as those found in mobile phones for instance, and need only have a lens opening of 2mm) and a processor for facial recognition, a few centimetres in size. Essentially, all you need to do is add a small computer to the display and you are good to go. The immediate benefit is then to apply this technology to all displays, regardless of the brand and type. The systems are, in fact, independent of each other: the screen displays the content, micro-camera and processor, which collects data. Obviously, with it being more technologically advanced, there is the possibility for a software to exchange live content. In certain cases, a display might not even be necessary, because nothing requires the facial recognition technology to be attached to audiovisual content. You could, for example, decide to install a camera with a processor on a suitable shelf, in this case in order to record the influx data around a displayed product. The software is normally able to ‘identify’ (so to speak, given what is written above) and record up to 4-5 faces in every frame. But there’s more: depending on the angle of the face in relation to the micro-camera, it is also possible to measure the viewer’s level of attention: a look straight on, directly towards camera, normally indicates a high level of attention, while a look to the side is associated with more superficial attention, which is more fleeting. The processor is instructed to ignore the background, or rather the mass of people who are not looking at the focal point; namely, the product. Usually, the positions in relation to the camera are analysed with an angle of around 30 degrees at a distance of 2 metres or less, according to the installed optics. Within the data collected, you will be able to see the average distance from which people look at the product or advert. Returning to the point of whether a display is needed, a QR code can add dynamic, interactive elements, given that, if a QR code is not traceable when printed on paper, one created through the screen is. Finally, the Digital Signage player can also be used to send Bluetooth messages. This article would not have been possible without the ideas and technical support of Riccardo D’Angelo, manager, physicist and IT programmer ad founder of Edisonweb, a company which develops Web Signage, applications which can be displayed on totems and interactive displays, but also inside public transport vehicles, targeted information based on a person’s profile, position and the weather conditions at that time. D’Angelo is also the founding partner and Vice President of the Association of Digital Signage Operators (ASSODS). COMPLETELY SCALEABLE A Digital Signage 2.0 system may have, of course, varying sizes, ranging from a single focus point to several thousands of points, simultaneously active and measurable. In short, the complexity of the system only depends on the customer and the work of the system integrator. It should be noted that the end user can also directly use the platform (which effectively consists of a software), without any specialist intervention. With a couple of clicks, the data can be consulted; based on the results, you can help the creative team to focus on better content, which is still easy to customise and change in real time. The collected data is constantly uploaded to cloud, and is available straight away. Depending on the marketing strategies of the company, you can choose between a short “duration” of information (fast marketing), or instead for a longer retention of data (in any case, the data would never be stored for more than 5-6 months, due to obvious issues of space and usage). Normally, over a period of 6 months, in addition to planning interactive communication for the short term (quick marketing), it is also possible to develop diagrams relating to the patterns of consumption and presence over the long term. In short, Digital Signage, as suggested in the provoking opening statement, is already old, but just as with those who keep in shape and keep themselves up-to-date, it is looking extremely good for its age and is set to conquer the future. It is a system consisting of a pair of active speakers with a ‘head’ (Model 812), and a subwoofer (F1 SUB). The head, Model 812 (664,66 x 334,3 x 372,5 mm; 20,2kg) is made with an array speaker of 8 proprietary drivers measuring 2,25”, waveguide system at 100 degrees and a 12” woofer, providing high quality SPL, all while guaranteeing a vocal clarity and notable better quality in the mid-ranges compared to traditional speakers. The subwooferF1 SUB (688 x 410,16 x 448,5 mm; 25,1 kg) matches the performance of one 18”, even though it only contains two 10” woofers. The peculiarities of the Model 812 include the ability to manually adjust the angle of the vertical dispersion, according to four profiles, which change the sound area to be covered. Straight (maximum vertical control), J (downwards adjustment), Reverse (the opposite direction, to cover a large forum space, for example), C (audible ports above and below the sound beam). In addition, the 812 Model can also be used in stand-alone mode: it has an integrated microphone preamplifier, meaning that it’s possible to directly connect a microphone to the speaker, for use at a conference, for example. Lastly, the subwoofer’s internal bracket allows you to quickly create sub-head clusters without having to remember to bring additional speaker stands; a special groove hides all the cables, resulting in a superior aesthetic finish compared to other models available on the market. C - Why did Bose decide to make an appearance in this new category? FC - Bose, up until now, was aimed at single musicians, with little need for high sound pressure. F1 instead allows us, thanks to its increased power and capacity to cover a larger area (Flexible Array), to turn to new segments of the market and different kinds of clients: Large Bands, DJs, Conference venues, Small Live Club venues. This is the main reason behind the creation of F1: expanding on a category of products in the Live Music Market, which, up until now, only covered certain applications. C - What are your main goals with F1? FC - F1 has benefitted from a rather long period of development, given that Bose wanted to launch a one-of-a-kind product in its own segment of the market: we’re talking about the final phases of a journey which began a few years ago. We will firstly consider music applications, but we also believe that the professional field could take well to the proposal. C - When will F1 be available? FC - The global launch takes place at the MusikMesse/PL+S, and it will be available in Europe from July 15th; it should be noted that the company has decided to make F1 available firstly in Europe and not in the United States. C - What have the reactions from the market been like? FC - Now, on day two of the fair, we can safely say that we have received several visits from dealers, who have shown great interest in both the product and the concept, understanding how Bose is, nowadays, capable of providing a range of higher quality applications compared to the past. So, very positive feedback...furthermore, we really believe in this product! 63 AGGIORNAMENTI UPDATE www.madeexpo.it MADE EXPO Milano, 18-22 marzo 2015 Milan, March 18-22, 2015 Text: Chiara Benedettini Informazione integrata. Integrated information access. Frame the QR with the phone camera after opening the player. Systems integration is appearing in more vertical markets, but they all share an architectural concept, whether that is a hostel, a shopping centre or a home. That’s why it is important to visit MadeExpo, and exactly why we did We already covered Made Expo in 2013 and we returned again in 2015, a year and a half later (not two, since the event was moved forward by a few months to so as not to clash with the forthcoming Expo), in order to discover the architectural trends and, in particular, how these trends and technology relate to one another. In short, as you know, the furniture and construction market has been at a standstill for a long time in Italy. Therefore, a fair such as this one could be very important for boosting possible developments in this sector. The event took place, as usual, at Rho and filled four pavilions, for a total of 1,450 exhibitors and another 208,000 people present. On the basis of the numbers, compared to 2013 (still with a view to obtaining information about the architectural/furniture market in Italy) a similar number of companies were exhibited (around 20 more), but with a 12% increase in foreign companies. There was a slight decline in the number of visitors, dropping from 211,000 to around 208,000. Nonetheless, despite the fall in Russian and Ukrainian visitors, due to recent political matters, the number of foreign visitors increased to over 36,000... a reassuring figure for Made in Italy. Made was divided into four ‘sub rooms’: Construction and Materials, Doors and Windows, Interiors and Finishings, and closer to home for us: Software, Technology & Services, where digital realty linked to design, software and business services were displayed. As always, the training areas were also important, divided into four areas: Build Smart (innovation, sustainability), Made4Contract (opportunities for those in the hotel sector), Made4Retail (information about distribution and marketing) and Doors and Windows Forum. The area Building the Expo also attracted many visitors: an exhibition where 13 internationally renowned architectural offices displayed their projects for the pavilions at Expo 2015. By-me is a system which gives control of automation systems in the home, video surveillance, TVCC, air-conditioning etc, manageable locally or remotely, also with the use of personal devices. This means user scenarios can be defined, which combine lightening, energy saving, air conditioning, as well as music and videos. For example, the air conditioning can be activated or deactivated by the presence of someone in the room, or even by a window being opened, using the same sensors and magnetic contacts found in alarm systems, which, in this case, perform a double function. An alarm system can be teamed with video surveillance, perhaps in conjunction with video door entry systems. Well-contact plus works on building management: a one-of-a-kind system for lights, temperatures, security, energy, KNX technology developments, which include control equipment (touch screens, presence detectors...), access controls (card readers and transponder readers), temperature control (electronic thermostat); however, thanks to its flexibility, additional devices can be integrated through the KNX gateway. www.connessioni.biz 65 AGGIORNAMENTI UPDATE Vitrum Ha presentato una nuova serie di interruttori dal design molto accattivante, a sfioro. Integrated information access. Frame the QR with the phone camera after opening the player. 68 Aprile April 2015 The visual world is drawing increasingly closer to that of integrated systems. A union which, for some time now, has been beginning to bear its first interesting fruits; increasing numbers of SIEC members and increasing the possibilities for the entire production line, with the end goal to further increase awareness of the sector Come detto più volte, l’obiettivo di SIEC è promuovere la corretta applicazione delle tecnologie nel mercato dell’integrazione di sistemi e, in termini più generali, puntare a incoraggiare il dialogo tra i membri dell’industria. As has already often been said, SIEC’s goal is to promote the correct use of integrated systems technologies on the market and, in more general terms, they aim to encourage dialogue between members of the industry. With today’s continuously evolving market, where various sectors and technological applications are joining forces and evolving in no time at all, combining and integrating with one another, speaking of integrated systems requires greater outreach to the technical world. www.connessioni.biz j Un momento del convegno sul Digital Signage a SIEC 2014 A moment of Digital Signage conference during SIEC 2014 It is therefore no coincidence that an Association designed to be the reference point for manufacturers, distributors and installers in the relative fields of video, audio and controls are opening companies and employing professional figure heads in line with new trends. We are in the process of doing this with architects, facility managers and end users and even with leaders in field of communications. During SIEC 2014, a conference was hosted, run by Soiel International, solely based on techniques and trends of digital communication and of Digital Signage, an opportunity which, besides inciting general consensus, had hoped to show our guests the potentials of business growth in an ever changing market. Today, also thanks to the recommendations of our members and the success of our work, the communication companies are beginning to take an interest in SIEC because, as explains Roberto Vogliolo, an electrical engineer and founder and CEO of DOOH.IT, “it represents an opportunity to meet other operators and pitch the business in the right way to end users. We have always been involved in the realm of associations, because we believe, both I and my partner, in their effect and contribution to the market and in increasing awareness in the sector. We have deemed SIEC capable of bringing together what we believe are the key figures in the sector in which we operate; producers, systems integrators and those who work end-to-end on projects. Our personal goal is to help attract new targets, in the direction we believe we need to go: architects, designers, end users and communications companies. All of this is to ensure that we don’t get stuck in a self-referential cycle and have to face communication barriers and the lack of technical expertise from the customer or client. We maintain that the work ought to be carried out by trying to establish more contact with these people, to form collaborations until the required skills are available to be implemented for increasingly innovative projects. It is also necessary to keep a close eye on the market and indicated trends, such as those which bring together the world of digital signage and the world of live and immediate communication. In order to create events involving participants in technological and interactive projects which address user experience.” NEW MEMBERS A&ITS (Advanced & Innovative Technology Systems) from Rome, is a company focused on the continuous evolution of technologies for communication and security. The Engineering division, with twenty years’ experience, is synonymous with quality of the service provided and a genuine benchmark for all applications. The company designs innovative solutions for conference rooms, meeting rooms, auditoriums, shopping centres, classrooms and all spaces requiring communication facilities, using the most up-to-date software for technical drawing and rendering. Leading Technologies is amongst the largest companies in the Italian market for Audio, Video and Professional Lighting. The company began in the Audio field before expanding into the field of video, lighting and controls in order to be able to provide comprehensive integrated solutions to fulfil all needs. The company has been active since 1978, has a total of 35 employees and occupies an area of 12,000 square metres, including laboratories, demonstration and seminar rooms, and a warehouse. DOOH.IT from Turin, specialises in digital signage and out-of-home digital. Since 2009, DOOH solutions have cropped up around Italy and in more than 100 cities throughout the world. The company uses consolidated operating methods in line with the business strategies of their clients and dedicate a lot of time to researching and development. DOOH.IT was created from the shared passion for telecommunications, all that is digital and the entrepreneurship of its two founders, Giovanni Fracasso and Roberto Vogliolo. 69 DALLE ASSOCIAZIONI ASSOCIATIONS WORLD ENTRA NELLA STORIA www.cedia.org L’Hall of Fame della smart home di CEDIA PLAY YOUR PART IN HISTORY - CEDIA smart home Hall of Fame Matt Nimmons, Operations Director di CEDIA EMEA ripercorre la hall of fame degli ultimi dieci anni del CEDIA Awards per capire e evidenziare come questi hanno plasmato il nostro settore... Essa vanta infatti una precisione nelle dimensioni e nell’orientamento sui punti cardinali che – parola di molti illustri architetti e ingegneri d’oggi – persino attualmente, con le strumentazioni di cui possiamo disporre, sarebbe difficile raggiungere Ever since it was built, the Great Pyramid has attracted and amazed generations and generations of researchers and visitors. It undoubtedly boasts great dimensional accuracy and precision in the orientation of the cardinal points – words uttered by many illustrious architects and engineers from our time – even nowadays, with the equipment which we have at our disposal, it would be difficult to achieve such precision Proviamo a guardare a questo incredibile monumento dal punto di vista dell’integrazione di sistemi. GLI ANTENATI THE ANCESTORS Let’s try to look at this incredible monument from the point of view of systems integration. Because by now it has been established that the pyramids were not solely tombs, or, at least, not tombs as we know them, but rather the complex building structures from where the Pharaoh’s – through constructive mechanisms and special measures – could begin their journey through the afterlife. In short, behind the pyramids – and in particular, the Cheops Pyramid – aside from the religious aspect, and yet closely linked to it, exists an ancient scientific culture rivalling that of today in its depth and complexity. Of course, many notions were yet to be discovered, but it’s surprising to note that, as with the inside of the Giza Pyramid, the layout of the terrain of the three pyramids exactly replicates the layout of the sky above, the so-called Orion’s Belt, a trio of very well-known stars, even to amateur astronomers. What’s the link between the pyramids and the sky? Are we to conclude that the Pharaohs’ began their journey from the pyramid up towards the sky? And how so? This is why, in addition to the brilliant architects, system integrators from the distant Egyptian past appear on the scene, capable of designing, within the huge, complex rock structure of the pyramids, a series of tunnels, at least four, which run from the King’s Chamber and the Queen’s Chamber. The discovery of these tunnels, or at least of some of them, has been attributed to Rudolf Gatenbrink and his robot Upuaut, named in honour of an Egyptian Deity, the son of Isis, whose name means (not coincidently) “He who opens up the way”. Nothing more fitting for a small, exploratory robot, which travels around the inaccessible tunnels of the Great Pyramid and has made some exciting discoveries. A ‘door’, for example, with many mysterious metal brackets, which closes off the entrance to one of the tunnels. Perhaps it is protecting something or protecting the tunnel itself from sand storms from the plateau and from the elements. The tunnels in the Cheops Pyramid appear to be an integrated system and the main function of the building, which was, as we know, that of funerals. Each tunnel measures around 20 by 20cm, therefore they weren’t designed for human use. Furthermore, those which run from the so-called Queen’s Chamber are blocked at both ends- from the Chamber and from the outside. In other words, they are like little blind spots in the heart of the gigantic pyramid. What was their purpose? Why has the entire structure (which required many stone blocks to be very accurately www.connessioni.biz carved) been filled with small tunnels which weren’t even visible? Throughout the years, there have been several hypotheses. That the tunnels were used as air vents? It is unlikely, since some are closed off at both ends! That they were used for water? Ludicrous, given that the mummification process cannot take place in humid conditions and the conservation of the Pharaohs’’ bodies was only possible in very dry environments. All that remains is the possibility that these structures were designed to transport, in some shape or form, energy (solar?) or for certain religious beliefs. In fact, according to some studies, the tunnels would have been accurately aligned to match up with different stars, which would have turned the cult for the dead Pharaohs into a heavenly cult. These hypotheses are not to be rejected, on the basis of the various studies carried out by researchers such as Jane B. Sellers, Hertha von Dechend and the man himself, Giorgio de Santillana, the famous main scholar on celestial myths. It could be that the great system integrators of the Great Pyramid, using methods and techniques which are now not known to us, had wanted to equip the funeral monument with an architectural escape route for the Pharaohs’ souls. But why are there two tunnels leading from the King’s Chamber, instead of one? Why design the structure so it points to both the northern and southern parts of the sky? And what other souls were intended for the remaining two tunnels, those which are blocked off at both ends? In 1993, the little Upuaut travelled through the tunnels, discovering hidden symbols and entrance ways, unresolved puzzles (exploration is still underway). What is certain, however, is that Cheops had to get rid of the extremely talented system integrators, and with their disappearance, the art form also died out throughout the centuries. Thanks to them, we can enjoy the wonderful construction skills and astronomical inspiration which guided and inspired their structural work.
