PROJECT DESCRIPTION OUT OF TOWN, AWAY FROM IT ALL Planet Earth is full of difficulties for cars: sand and snow and rocky ground, and even overpopulated cities. The city, though, is the symbol of Western civilization, the birthplace of culture and technology, represented symbolically and historically by the Roman forum: the center of a society’s cultural, social and political life of a society. Our cities are overrun by cars and trucks and buses that want nothing to do with the history and culture around them. Where moving from place to place is essential in order to survive, our cities are frozen, motionless, in a sea of vehicles of all sizes and kinds. We must free the center of our cities so that they can once again be public places, places for people, as part of a new view of livable space. There is a need to get away, “out of town”, where we encounter three “mega-scenarios”. Extreme Minus: where we find conditions of extreme heat and cold, as at the South Pole. Extreme Plus: where we find conditions of extreme heat and sand, as in the Sahara desert. Intermediate: where we find weather conditions that vary extremely between the four seasons, with large amounts of snow in the winter and drought in the summer, as in the “cities of snow” in Northern Europe. Analyzing the vehicles used in these scenarios, I found that there are two types. One that is entirely incapable of facing weather conditions in these places, like the everyday cars whose electronic systems go on the blink the minute it starts snowing; Another that is designed specifically for certain conditions, and thus cannot cope with the other scenarios, like snowmobiles and snowcats that could never be used in the Extreme Plus scenario. My basic idea was thus to create a single vehicle that can take any of the three conditions described above in its stride, as it can use a technology shared by all of the extreme vehicles I analyzed in the three scenarios: tracks. This led to the idea of a fuel cell platform with full drive-by-wire technology which carries an occupant compartment designed specifically for the weather conditions of the scenario with which it interfaces, and hence of a vehicle that can use tracks should the need arise. This gives the vehicle a footprint and traction capabilities very similar to those of a snowcat, while maintaining the ride comfort typical of a passenger car, creating a hybrid between: - A sport utility vehicle - An all-terrain vehicle, - A people carrier, and - A city car. This is a new kind of car: the MUV, or Multi Utility Vehicle. Thanks to this vehicle, high mountain scenarios will no longer be unreachable, seen only in ads, but will become reality. "Out of town " thus means off the beaten track: where we used to need a specific vehicle (like a snowcat) for every specific need, the MUV breaks down the borders between isolated functions, going anywhere and everywhere.
