In the sultry, still sunny September of that Emilian rural district most soaked with catholicism and home-grown socialism, Elia, a teenager grown out of these horizons, lives with his parents: William, his father, who has got a strong ideological tendency to marxism, Maddalena, his mother, very prayerful, and his grandmother; with the ghost of his older brother Samuele, who’s not coming back home since a whole year. It is harvest time in the small vineyard next to home, so the days of harvest begin and in order to give some help in the field arrives also Emilia, the nearly grown-up granddaugther of an old couple living in Elia’s same small town. The young woman decides to go back to her grandparent’s country town for a short time, to write her degree thesis and, in the meanwhile, to earn some money for a wee trip she’s been planning for a while. Conceited and nonchalant, Emilia is a true revolution in the ordinary every day life of the provincial teenager but, in spite of everything, Elia will need just a few days to reawaken Emilia’s heart, which seemed to be submerged by disillusionment and a constant mediocrity. Maddalena is a very religious housewife and she’s part of her parish church’s spiritual group, which sometimes meets up in everyone’s own house to pray. Her husband, William, always reads the paper L’Unità and he’s a convinced communist. The action takes place only three months after Enrico Berlinguer’s death. The parents are part of what we could define, quoting Enrico Palandri in Pier, Tondelli e la generazione*, a sort of “home-grown socialism”, because of its territorial tradition at times giving and taking with the Catholic religion. Both sons of early XXth century tenant farmers and partisans and both deep rooted in their small farm world -everyone with his own belief-, a world that maybe doesn’t exist anymore, with its old traditions and strong values they’re appealing to, even if inexorably in decline. Samuele, the first-born, is often travelling around Europe, working as a music editor for some magazines. Emilia is instead a girl who never really broke away from a familial niche intellectual but not bourgeois; her parents weren’t able not to spoil her. “On my land, what I am will help me live my life”** Pier Vittorio Tondelli * about Pier Vittorio Tondelli, Laterza publishing. ** excerpt from the novel Other Libertines, Pier Vittorio Tondelli’s first work. Feltrinelli publishing, 1980. 07 MARCO RIGHI DIRECTOR DAYS OF HARVEST Marco Righi is twenty-eight and he was born in Reggio Emilia, where he’s still living. He studied direction and editing. He worked for five years as an editor for a production company; since May 2009 he’s been working on his own project “505”, a study specialized in video post-productions. He realized two short films, earning at times awards and speciali mentions. Two years ago, his debut as a documentary director: Down Mussolini, taking care of both direction and editing. Days of harvest is his debut film. FILMOGRAPHY: 2010 2008 2005 2004 I giorni della vendemmia, director M. Righi [Feature] Abbasso il Duce, director M. Righi [Doc] Il bagno verde, director M. Righi [Short] Michele, la paghetta e Truffaut*, director M. Righi [Short] Direction notes: When I thought about Days of Harvest at the beginning I had no idea that this could become a film. As I was filming, I realized that the characters started to live for real and each of them needed to show something, as could be the obstinacy, the discretion or the self-indulgence. A delicate and intimate film, personal but not autobiographical, in which I was interested in the ‘’mise-en-scene’’ more than any intellectual presence. A narratively-simple story, where the prerogative was to transmit realism to a film that puts as protagonist its own land. I really wanted to physically enter in that filmic field to give the audience the possibility to scent those surrounding environments. Days of Harvest is a film where there is not the eagerness to reveal, but to give back – as far as I could – something to the audience: a film written and dedicated to the region of Emilia, crossroads of the Italian society always on the verge of a break, through the eyes of an adolescent who’s growing up and more generally of an author in his first work. Days of Harvest is the first full-lenght film produced by Ierà, after years of experience in the production of industrial short films and television programs. Production notes: The production of Days of harvest was born as an act of confidence towards the talent of the young director Marco Righi. The productive path, covered together, was long and we found all the difficulties resulting from being an independent film, low-budget and a debut work, both for direction and production. We worked on the pre-production for almost a year, trying continuously to strike a balance between what we wanted and what we could actually do. The result was a group of young, talented professionals who strongly cooperated and believed in this project, bringing to fruition Days of harvest. Together with the commitment of a crowd of friends, relatives and associations that in any capacity contributed to the production of the film, which is therefore the outcome of an unrepeatable, unique alchemy. Simona Malagoli 21 PARTNER SPONSOR AND INSTITUTIONS DAYS OF HARVEST with the contribution of: with the acknowledgment of: COMUNE DI SAN POLO D’ENZA IERa DISTRIBUTION DAYS OF HARVEST The distribution has followed the same approach as the production: newcomers willing to work as professionally as possible. In order to trace a path of credibility to be able to be presented to theatrical exhibitors, the movie has therefore been submitted to national and international festivals and – on a meritocratic basis – has received the accolade of both critics and audiences. Starting from January 2012, the movie will be ready for presentation to worldwide sales agents and markets. Italian independent distribution held by Ierà. A preview of the movie was displayed to Italian exhibitors on October 13th, at Incontri del Cinema d’Essai di Mantova, promoted/supported by FICE (Italian Federation of Art Film). via Prati Vecchi, 10 42025 Cavriago (RE) - Italy tel. +39 0522 557067 fax +39 0522 396353 mail: [email protected] url: www.iera.eu Simona Malagoli + 39 3473099235 [email protected] DAYSOFHARVEST.COM © Ierà 2011 nonamestudio.eu daysofharvest.com
