MALEVENTUM
Raul Zamudio
Consisting of painting, the title is culled
from two sources. One comes from
Benevento's ancient Roman description:
Maleventum, which translates as "site
of bad events". Maleventum was
considered so ominous that its name
would be changed by Romans to
something more benign: Beneventum;
and finally to its current nomenclature
as Benevento. The other allusion in the
exhibition's title is more contemporary,
for it comes verbatim from the similarly
named album by the Italian death metal
band, Opera IX.
Maleventum's historical description
was based on numerous factors
concurrent with, and post ancient
Rome. One entails the violent, bloody
battles that took place in the
expansion of the Roman Republic.
Later in the sixth century AD, the
Germanic people known as the
Lombards seized Beneventum and although they eventually would
adopt Catholicism, their burgeoning reign brought the worship
of faunal pagan gods and rites that would rub up against
Christendom. These perceived heresies initiated Benevento's
future folkloric perception as a place
steeped in witchery and sorcery. The
exhibition uses these sources as
curatorial foil to investigate the occult
and attendant crypto-fascist backdrop
of historical events, politics, and the
cult of personality.
MALEVENTUM
Raul Zamudio
Si tratta di una mostra di pittura, il cui
titolo deriva da una duplice ispirazione.
Da un lato infatti il titolo si riferisce
all'antico nome romano della città di
Benevento ovvero "Maleventum",
traducibile come "luogo di eventi
negativi" (un nome ritenuto così
infausto da essere modificato già
nell'antichità nel più benigno
Beneventum, e infine nella sua attuale
denominazione di Benevento) e
dall'altro allude a una fonte più
contemporanea perché cita il titolo di
un album del gruppo death metal
italiano Opera IX.
La storia di Maleventum risale già
al periodo antico-romano ma,
successivamente, nel VI sec d.C., la
tribù germanica dei Longobardi si
impadronì della città introducendovi,
nonostante alla fine si sarebbe
convertita al Cattolicesimo,
l'adorazione degli dei faunistici pagani
e alcuni riti destinati a scontrarsi inconciliabilmente con le tradizioni
cristiane. Da queste pratiche, considerate eretiche, deriva il mito
e la credenza popolare secondo cui Benevento sarebbe un luogo
immerso nelle arti magiche e nella stregoneria. La mostra si serve
di questi riferimenti come traccia
curatoriale per indagare la
dimensione misteriosa degli eventi
storici e quotidiani, delle occulte
teorie complottistiche, delle politiche
cripto-fasciste e del culto della
personalità.
