Sono ormai passati sei anni da quando, nel giugno del 2005, il coro del Royal Holloway College di
Londra venne tra noi ad inaugurare quella “tradizione” di ospitalità di cori universitari inglesi che fa
ormai parte degli appuntamenti che il Collegium Vocale di Crema, in collaborazione con diverse
istituzioni, offre annualmente. Quest’anno abbiamo il piacere di ospitare un altro prestigioso coro
dell’Università londinese: il King’s College, diretto da David Trendell. E’ un gruppo che non ha
bisogno di molte presentazioni: il suo curriculum ci fa comprendere il livello altissimo con cui si
esprime. È significativo tornare alla città da cui è iniziata la nostra tradizione: tra i due cori della
capitale inglese, dal 2005 al 2011, si sono alternate le grandi città universitarie di Cambridge e
Oxford, tracciando un percorso culturale e musicale di cui noi organizzatori siamo fieri e che non
ha eguali in Italia. Va inoltre sottolineato come anche il prossimo anno avremo un coro di Londra:
lo University of London Chamber Choir e, per la cronaca, a malincuore, sono stati rifiutati due
gruppi di Cambridge. Come spesso accade tutto era iniziato quasi casualmente nel 2005 con una
innocua mail, trasformatasi ben presto in entusiasmo e poi nel timore di non saper gestire gruppi di
prestigio che si muovevano col bagaglio della loro fama: fu proprio il direttore del Royal Holloway, il
carissimo amico Prof. Lionel Pike, a mettermi a mio agio, a tranquillizzarmi consentendomi di
organizzare tutto con serenità; da allora… non c’è più stata sosta! Ho incontrato in questi sei anni
molte persone, studenti e docenti, ho incrociato storie di vita di ragazzi che vivono nel cuore delle
istituzioni accademiche più prestigiose al mondo, l’Inghilterra è per me una terra meravigliosa. La
musica ha una grande forza, la musica ha un’anima che scaturisce da ogni singola nota, la musica
fa toccare il cielo alle persone che insieme creano un coro. Grazie a tutti coloro che anche
quest’anno hanno permesso la realizzazione di un sogno che continua da ormai sei lunghi anni.

... From London to London!
It was six years since, June 2005, the Choir of Royal Holloway College London went to open the
"tradition" of hosting British University Choirs, part of the appointments that the Collegium Vocale
di Crema, in collaboration with other institutions, offers annually. This year we are pleased to host
another prestigious choir of the University of London: King's College, directed by David Trendell.
It 's a group that does not need introduction: we can see King’s curriculum to understand the high
level which is expressed. London is the city from where we started our tradition with this two choirs
of the English capital: from 2005 to 2011, we have traced a path of culture and music of which we
are proud organizers and that has no equal in Italy with the great University cities of Oxford and
Cambridge. It should also be pointed out again next year we will have another choir of London: the
University of London Chamber Choir. As often happens it was all started almost by chance in 2005
with a harmless mail, soon transformed into enthusiasm and then for fear of not knowing how to
manage groups of prestige that moved with the baggage of their fame: it was the director of Royal
Holloway, the beloved friend Prof. Lionel Pike, to put me at ease, allowing me to calm down and
organize everything with equanimity, and since then ... there's been on! I met many people in these
six years, students and teachers, I meet life stories of young people who live in the heart of the most
prestigious academic institutions in the world, England is a wonderland for me. The music has
great strength, the music has a soul that comes from every single note, music is to touch the sky to
the people who together create a choir. Thanks to everyone that this year has enabled the
realization of a dream that continued for almost six long years.

Il Coro del King’s College London
Il Coro del King's College di Londra è uno dei cori misti universitari più acclamati in Inghilterra:
fondato nella sua forma attuale nel 1945, si compone di circa 28 coristi. Il King's College fa parte
dei 19 Colleges della University of London, fondata nel 1829.
Oltre a fornire la musica per i services religiosi nella magnifica cappella del King’s, il coro ha
ottenuto un crescente consenso, in particolare per le sue esecuzioni di polifonia rinascimentale. La
registrazione del compositore spagnolo del XVI secolo Alonso Lobo, per la casa discografica
Sanctuary Gaudeamus, ha ricevuto recensioni quali quelle della BBC Music Magazine che parla di
una interpretazione “stupefacente” delle Lamentaziones di Lobo.
Le registrazioni della Missa corona spinea di John Taverner (2000) e dei mottetti di Byrd hanno
ricevuto la nomination per la Gramophone Early Music. Recenti CD hanno hanno incluso musica di
Philippe Rogier per la Hyperion, Sebastian de Vivanco per la Sanctuary Gaudeamus e un disco di
musica per il tempo di Avvento per la Herald.
Nel 2008 il King’s College e il Caius and Gondville College di Cambridge hanno inciso il
monumentale The Sealed Angel di Rodion Shchedrin’s.
Il coro ha tenuto numerosi concerti, sia in Inghilterra che all'estero, in particolare negli USA e
Francia (festival di Parigi, Lione, Uzès e Tolosa). Il coro canta regolarmente per le trasmissioni della
BBC Radio 3, in particolare per gli Epiphanytide.
David Trendell
Nato nel 1964, David Trendell ricevette la sua prima educazione musicale come corista nella
Cattedrale di Norwich, per poi arrivare ad Oxford dove fu Organ Scholar dell’Exeter College. Ha poi
intrapreso lo studio delle opere di Alexander Zemlinsky, mentre era assistant organist al Winchester
College. Nel 1989 è stato nominato organista della University Church of St Mary the Virgin, Oxford
e Tutor College del St Hugh's, St Hilda's e, poi, dell'Oriel College.
Nel 1992 si trasferisce a Londra e diviene College Organist e docente di musica presso il King's
College.
Trendell è anche direttore musicale alla St Mary’s, Bourne Street in London, dopo aver tenuto un
post simile presso la Priory Church of St Bartholomew the Great. E 'stato anche direttore del
Festival di Edington, e diretto il Nave Choir per dieci anni, col quale ha tenuto esecuzioni per la
BBC Radio 3.
Ha scritto saggi sulla musica di William Byrd e tenuto lezioni al International William Byrd Festival

The Choir of King’s College London
The Choir of King’s College London is one of the most acclaimed mixed voice university choirs in England.
Founded in its present form in 1945, it consists of about 28 choral scholars reading a variety of subjects.
King’s College London, part of the University of London, was itself founded in 1829.
Besides providing music for the services in the magnificent (and recently-restored) Scott-designed Chapel at
King’s, the choir has a burgeoning reputation, particularly for its performances of Renaissance polyphony.
Their recording of music by the Spanish sixteenth-century composer Alonso Lobo, on the Sanctuary
Gaudeamus label, received very favourable reviews, the BBC Music Magazine speaking of an ’astonishing’
performance of Lobo’s Lamentations, ‘by a choir as passionate as it is disciplined’. A recording of John
Taverner’s Missa Corona spinea (2000) and motets by William Byrd was nominated for a Gramophone Early
Music award. Recent recordings have included music by Philippe Rogier for Hyperion, Sebastian de Vivanco
for Sanctuary Gaudeamus and a disc of music for the season of Advent for Herald. In 2008 they recorded
Rodion Shchedrin’s monumental The Sealed Angel jointly with the Choir of Gonville and Caius College,
Cambridge, which was one an Editor’s choice in Gramophone.
The choir has given many concerts, both in England and abroad. In 2010 they sang at an international choir
festival in St Petersburg and in September 2009 they toured the east coast of the USA. In the last three years
the choir have given no fewer than twenty-five concerts in France, which have included festivals in Paris,
Lyon, Uzés and Toulouse. The choir also regularly broadcasts for BBC Radio 3, in particular for their
Epiphanytide services.
David Trendell
Born in 1964, David Trendell received his early musical education as a chorister at Norwich Cathedral during
which time he was the soloist on a recording of Mendelssohn's famous Hear my Prayer. He was later an alto
choral scholar there before going up to Oxford where he was Organ Scholar of Exeter College. Subsequently,
he embarked upon research into the works of Alexander Zemlinsky whilst being Assistant Organist at
Winchester College. In 1989 he was appointed Organist of the University Church of St Mary the Virgin,
Oxford and College Tutor at St Hugh's, St Hilda's and, later, Oriel Colleges. He moved to London in 1992 to
become College Organist and Lecturer in Music at King's College London.
Trendell is also Director of Music at St Mary’s, Bourne Street in London, having held a similar post at the
Priory Church of St Bartholomew the Great for over thirteen years. He was also Director of the Edington
Festival, a festival of music within the liturgy, and conducted the Nave Choir there for ten years, broadcasting
frequently for BBC Radio 3, for whom he has also presented programmes. He has written on the music of
William Byrd and lectures each year at the International William Byrd Festival in Portland, Oregon. He has
also made many editions of the work of Spanish sixteenth-century composers, among them Alonso Lobo and
Sebatián de Vivanco. Since 2001, Trendell has conducted a number of choral workshops with Chorus
Angelorum in Houston. In addition, he is well known as a record producer, having worked with such choirs
as Westminster Abbey, The Clerkes' Group, Oxford Camerata, Schola Cantorum of Oxford, New College,
Oxford, Winchester College and the Maîtrise de Caen.
