1 PhD POSITION -‐ PROCESS TRACKING FOR FORENSIC READINESS IN OS
Gjøvik University College (www.hig.no) has 1 available PhD position in within the area of process tracking
for forensic readiness in OS at the Norwegian Information Security Laboratory, NISlab (www.nislab.no).
Forensic analysis of computer systems suffers from a sparseness of logging of events. It would be desirable
to have a log of all state-‐changing activities of important processes, analogous to a flight data recorder
used to investigate plane crashes. Growth in computational power and storage capacity appears to make
comprehensive traceability feasible. Traceability provides evidence that can be used in a legal process to
achieve accountability of entities. Logging and versioning is a feature increasingly being integrated into
platforms and is also mentioned as part of the CRA Grand Research Challenge 4 in Information Systems
("Build Systems You Can Count On").
Challenges that should be addressed by the research include:
•
What are the state-‐changing activities of processes?
•
How effective, efficient, and expensive is comprehensive process activity tracking?
•
Which hardware/software architecture facilitates process activity tracking?
•
What are privacy implications for users of systems that support comprehensive traceability?
•
How does comprehensive traceability affect evidence gathering and the legal process?
•
How can traceability be generalised to a "unified theory'' of database transactions, configuration
changes in system management, and event recovery in forensic investigation?
Methods that can be applied are modelling of operating system and protection mechanisms, architectural
analysis of system designs, reasoning about traceable state changes, vulnerability analysis of logging
infrastructure, feasibility study of comprehensive traceability by prototypical development.

The grant may be offered for a period of 3 years where 100% of this time is assigned to the PhD study and
research, alternatively 4 years at 75%.
Applicant profile
Specific background and skills in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable:

Degrees in Computer Science or Engineering with a solid background in operating systems and
their APIs, i.e., intimate familiarity with Windows and/or Linux;

Software development skills;

Conflicting Incentives Risk Analysis
Gjøvik University College (www.hig.no) has available 2 PhD positions in the Information Security
Management group at NISlab (www.NISlab.no).
The positions are part of the HIS (Humans in Information Security) Research Programme. The
objective of HIS is to improve our understanding of risks relating to human behaviour within the context of
Information Security by combining ideas from Psychology, Economics, Statistics and Computer Science.
The programme currently includes the following projects:
•
PETweb II – Privacy-‐respecting Identity Management for e-‐Norge
•
ASSET -‐ Adaptive Security for Smart Internet of Things in eHealth
•
ETIS – Economic Theories in Information Security
•
CIRAD – Conflicting Incentives Risk Analysis Development
The successful applicant will be assigned to the CIRAD project. CIRA is a risk analysis method built on the
premise that risk is a consequence of the possibility of actions generating situations that at the same time
would be perceived as highly desirable for the one triggering the action and highly undesirable for the risk
taker. Thus, risk is viewed as a function of opposing utility perceptions. In particular, in CIRA, risk is a
pair of utilities (unit: U2), and a risk acceptance criterion is a set of such pairs.
Classically, risk is taken to be a combination of the likelihood or rate and the consequence of an
undesirable incident. Typically, the unit of risk will then be UT-‐1. However, in cases where there is
limited statistical incident data available or the risk generating process is unstable, this style of risk
analysis approaches guesswork. Furthermore, for low likelihood incidents it may take a long time before
the likelihood claims can be validated. The CIRAD project recognizes these challenges and replaces
likelihood by an analysis of stakeholder’s perceived incentives. Using this approach, establishment of a
Risk Acceptance Criteria amounts to obtaining answers to questions of the form: How big incentives are
you willing to accept that a stakeholder will perceive to have towards carrying out an action that will
inflict a given loss to you?
The CIRAD project is addressing issues such as:
•
Limitations of knowledge – capturing, formulating and analyzing uncertainties in the context of
conflicting incentives. Skill profile: Statistics or Computer Science.
•
Construction of metrics and analysis of utility factors and stakeholder weights. Skill profile:
Psychology, Behavioural economics or Computer Science.
•
Investigation of the scalability of operational Conflicting Incentives Risk Analysis. Prototype tool
construction, improvement and analysis of CIRA. Skill profile: Computer Science.
•
CIRA Case studies. The analysis of potential and limitations of CIRA with the objective of getting
new insight into Information Security Risks and enhancing the CIRA approach. Skill profile: Psychology,
Behavioural Economics, Statistics or Computer Science.
