Whether it was the branding on a piece of woodwork or the sound of his laughter after he pulled one of his infamous pranks, Mr. Vivolo "set the tone for the whole building" said colleague and friend Brian Gill. Mr. Vivolo, a retired Winthrop Public Schools teacher, died March 12 at Brigham and Women's Hospital from complications after liver surgery, He was 67:' "Richie was my mentor, one of my best frie}lds;" said Gill, now principal of Cummings Elementary School in Winthrop. "Whether you were an adult or a kid in that building, it was fun to be around him," he continued. "He would wear an embroidered shop coat with· his name on it, and he would take out a handful of sawdust and blow it out like he was blowing his nose. And he'd do it in the classroom or the teacher's room. He would put people at ease." But Mr. Vivolo was known for more than his jokes and fine craftsmanship. "I used to be in construetion, and I was having a difficult day one day teaching," Gill said. "Rich led me over to window and said, 'It's cold out there, huh? Rainy out there, huh? You could be roofing today: And suddenly whatever the minor irritation was that day, it disappeared immediately." Let's go back in time to the West End And try to reinember once again One of our own, a familiar sight Roaming the streets both day and night He sat on the curb with his violin Carefully tucked it under his chin Picked up the bow and started to play On a typical "AI Tabachnick Day" He'd walk down the street and break out i:q. song Neighborhood kids would.follow along They didn't get close cause they didn't know when He'd finish his song and cha$e after them He did us no harm; it was more of a game We'd follow along and shout out his name He'd stop and he'd look, and we'd start to run I truly believe he was just having fini Nobody knew very much about him We just knew Tabachnick and his violin If I could go back, I think I would try To learn a bit more of this most un~que guy It's certainly clear that he came to be · ·A bit of a West End celebrity .
