Summer 2015 - Panizza 1879
Panizza has been making the best hats in the world since 1879, the year when it was founded, thanks to the skill and genius of Giovanni Panizza, the head of a long stock of expert Italian hatmakers. When Giovanni Panizza retired to private life, he left the company to his friend and partner Natale Gamba, whose children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have successfully continued managing the business to the present. Over the years, the aim has been to maintain the great manufacturing skill and craftsmanship, conquered and learned with hard work, which is still today the pride and symbol of the brand and the company. Today production takes place in Montevarchi at the Falcus hat factory, whilst the original site in Ghiffa, on the shores of Lake Maggiore, is home to the museum of the art of the hat. Summer 2015 This collection draws fully from tradition and the classic models that characterized the history of the brand and its collections from the early 1930s to the start of the 1970s. A journey through the history of elegance and class, to rediscover the deep roots of the style of the Panizza brand, which evokes the past with an eye on the new trends. The special attention to the quality of the very fine straws used, such as Brisa from Ecuador, creates ultra-lightweight hats, in colours from light and natural to the brightest and most summery shades, such as red and orange. There is also room for the oriental Parasisol straws, which are incredibly elastic and transparent, almost similar to a fabric to give new lightness to the iconic Panizza models. The trims, in silk or in cotton, wide bands and which often define the model, take on classic stripes from sailing inspiration, proper to tradition. For the most elegant models, the choice of plissé for the trim, typical of the 1930s, used again in the 1960s around the most elastic straws and make them more elegant, offers a vintage and fascinating appearance, from another time but timeless, in a continuous reference to the rediscovery of a glorious past. The edges of the brim, in association with the band, become a characterizing decorative element, also of classic inspiration. The brims, wide or narrow, which can sometimes be shaped, define totally unisex models and can be easily worn by men or women. Caps and visors in widely-woven straw join the collection, for a trendy street style. The cutting edge of the collection are two original Montecristi hats, of such extraordinary manufacture that only two a year are created. The web has been selected for the global relaunch of the Panizza brand and it is a choice in style, with a new and innovative site, which as well as institutional contents, is supported by a parallel site, Le Journal de Léon, with an original comics story by the well known cartoonist Paolo Bacilieri. The narrating voice of Le Journal de Léon, a story in episodes, is Léon, the Panizza mascot, a very British Jack Russell that recounts his adventures with great irony. The episodes will be posted every month, like a TV series, and the first season with the first episode is coming out at the same time as Pitti Uomo. The monthly rendezvous with Léon will be accompanied by a diary full of ideas, places and itineraries of art and music in harmony with the values of the brand. Who is Léon? Let me introduce myself: I am Léon, a Jack Russell. They say that I’m friendly and intelligent… My family is one of the oldest devoted to the art of hunting, but I am not interested in hunting. I originally come from Devon, but life has taken me elsewhere and now I am a citizen of the world. This is thanks to meeting Tom, my master, who adopted me when I was only an inquisitive and inexpert pup, so inexpert that I got lost on my way home. It was love at first sight with Tom. Since he took me “under his hat”, our life has changed: I have become his best friend and he has become my family. Chi è Tom? Ciao! Amo i cappelli. Who is Tom? Hello! I’m Tom, a “young lawyer with great potential” (so they say!). I love art, to the point of having made me decide to translate this passion into work. My professional sphere revolves around auction houses, galleries and museums, I draw up contracts and insurance policies for those who buy and sell works of varying degrees of importance and beauty. Sometimes my job can seem boring, but it lets me enjoy beauty and protect art and artists. This way Léon and I have the chance to be together and go around to satisfy our curiosity. Léon is the more enterprising of the two. I love hats. Ever since I was small, I imagined that I only needed a hat to be transformed into my favourite heroes: Dick Tracy, Tex Willer... Who wouldn’t like to be like them? And if you only need the hat to look the part, all the better. a t r e p o c s a ll a n o é L e Tom di Firenze... Tom and Léon discovering Florence... Ottimo consiglio. Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi Piazza Strozzi www.palazzostrozzi.org Florence, 17th june 2014 Our short break gets off to a great start. In the train we made friends with a genuine Florentine who gave us some tips on the right places in the city for a snack, dinner or go dancing with friends. We immediately take advantage of his tips and we look for the fish restaurant very near the station of Santa Maria Novella. This Pescheria San Pietro, with its open kitchen where attention is paid to everything down to the smallest detail has a very tempting menu. Strictly from the sea, with fresh fish and home-made pasta dishes. An excellent tip. Yes, why: because it is very practical, right next to the station. Pescheria San Pietro Via Alamanni, 7/R Tel.+39 055.23 82 749 www.pescheriasanpietro.it Si è fatta ora di cena e facendo quattro passi arriviamo a I Due Fratellini. I Due Fratellini Via dei Cimatori, 38 Tom is curious to see the exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi that I recommended! Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino. Divergent ways of “mannerism” is a tribute to the two most nonconformist and uninhibited painters of the new way of understanding art, in that period of the Italian 16th century which Giorgio Vasari called the “modern manner”. Yes, why: it is an interesting alternative to the Uffizi Gallery. Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi Piazza Strozzi www.palazzostrozzi.org Time for dinner we arrived at I Due Fratellini. There are no tables. You queue up to get a hot and crisp sandwich and a glass of good wine. The particularity: the small wooden shelves with numbered glass holders where you can put down your glass while you eat! Yes, why: it is right in the centre and you can enjoy delicious sandwiches. Today is shopping day! Tom is determined to buy himself a new Panizza hat and so we take the bus to the Cappelleria Brunetto. Starting from Santa Maria Novella we arrive in a road full of little shops all to explore. “Our” hat shop was opened in the 1950s/60s (as Mrs Claudia proudly tells us: she started as a sales assistant and now owns the shop). Tom chooses his Panizza hat, the Roma model: “I didn’t have it yet!” Yes, why: it is like plunging back into old Florence, in a road full of “sincere” shops. Tom andiamo a vedere? It’s already aperitif time, and we want to be at Il Rifrullo. It is in a vibrant area, the haunt of artists and craftsmen. It is the place where genuine Florentines go, from the manager to the hipster and the tattooed alternative. You can eat and drink very well. As I enjoy the well-deserved rest I happen to overhear a curious conversation between two friends: apparently near here there is the studio of Clet, the French street artist, famous for the controversial sculpture of a little man placed illegally on the bridge close by, removed by the council and after a popular uprising, put back on the Ponte alle Grazie. Tom, let’s go and see? Yes, why: it was the first American bar in the city and is a cult venue. Si perché: è tutto rigorosamente Made in Italy e freschissimo. Targa Lungarno Colombo, 7 Tel. 055 677 377 www.targabistrot.net Zoe Via Dei Renai, 13 www.zoebar.it Florence, 19th june 2014 For lunch we are going to the Sasso di Dante. We begin by saying that it is the typical Tuscan restaurant with a chatty host who entertains his guests talking about stones and Dante. Mr. Patrizio says that his restaurant, which originally was an inn, has existed since 1200 CE .Once upon a time next to his inn there was a rock on which the poet stood to watch the Cathedral being built. Rock or not, the food is excellent. Patrizio tells us that one evening, the young Florentine boys went to look for a rock in the country which they placed in the square with a plaque “Real rock of Dante” and where the tourist guides, who fell into the trap, took the tourists! Yes, why: it is all 100% Italian and very fresh. Sasso di Dante Piazza delle Pallottole, 6r Tel.055.282.113 www.sassodidante.it After lunch there is nothing better than a little stroll. What’s that coming from this lovely shop? Pegna. The Florentines, and visitors, have been going there to shop since 1869. It is a temple for gourmets. What a paradise: there are the typical Tuscan salamis and cured meats, local cheeses, pâtés and sauces and special oils, and bronze extruded pasta, and craft chocolate and biscuits. Tom, are you listening? I lost him in the crafts department, amidst fine waxes and mysterious essences. Yes, why: it has all the variety of an emporium and the warmth of an old-fashioned grocery shop and is a joy for the five senses. Pegna Via dello Studio, 8 www.pegnafirenze.com We are invited to dinner at Targa, on the River Arno. The name is strange, Targa, and our hostess explains that it stands for the chef-owner’s name Tarchiani Gabriele. Targa is one of the few restaurants in Florence open all day long from 10 a.m. to midnight, you can go there not only for lunch and dinner but also for an excellent coffee. The location is absolutely delightful: in this Florentine bistro that the globetrotting Executive Chef wanted, you can smell the perfumes of his trips to America and to France, but also the simple and honest flavours of the Tuscan tradition. The menu is seasonal and changes every three months. The desserts are excellent and the wine list is remarkable, with about a thousand labels. Yes, why: the food is Tuscan with hints of international flavours, accompanied by good music. As they say, the night is young so after dinner we go to Zoe in San Niccolò, “the bar” of Florence. After a quick professional look - there are always works on the walls by upcoming artists and photographs - we grab a table outside we all order a cocktail and a lovely bowl of fresh water for me! Yes, why: it is one of the most popular young meeting points in the city, where to chat and drink well and watch the world goes by. It’a Florentine morning, it’s the last day of spring and we easy wander in the centre, the sky is clear, the air is crisp. I follow my nose and we arrive in Piazza del Mercato Nuovo. There is Orazio Nencioni’s stall of “lampredotto”, an institution in the city, like his sandwiches. Absolutely everyone stops at the kiosk of the tripe-seller (a twin of the one in Sant’Ambrogio) and the fans of lampredotto - a typical dish of humble Florentine cuisine based on meat and offal, slowly cooked with tomato, parsley, onion and celery - are tourists, bricklayers, gentlemen and Florentines who queue up for Orazio’s sandwiches to eat, absolutely with spicy green sauce. Yes, why: because it makes you feel like a real Florentine Waiting for the train that will take us back home, we go up to the terrace of Hotel Continentale to say goodbye to Florence... What a stunning view! We go up to the terrace of Hotel Continentale. It very elegant, with all that white interrupted by pieces of design and artistic photos. At the top of the medieval tower of the Consorti, there is La Terrazza lounge bar and this is where we sit to say goodbye to Florence. Yes, why: from the terrace you can take in the whole of Florence and the atmosphere is of the Dolce Vita of the 1950s.
