Director TexClubTec
Despite the international economic crisis and the increasing concern
for a new worsening because of the ongoing situation in Russia, the
Rouble depreciation and the decrease in oil prices, it could not be
denied that a general gradual upturn is taking place concerning also
textiles & clothing, and especially export-oriented companies.
However, the severe bad economic situation showed how risky financial operations could not be at the basis of an economic growth. On
the contrary, a strong industrial production could be a good starting
point.
Indeed, production leadership for industrialized countries in such a globalized world could be matched only
with the concept of added value, obtained through technological innovation, balancing high production
costs out.
In order to give more support to the textile sector, and in particular to companies willing to build their
growth strategies on innovation, TexClubTec and Sistema Moda Italia announced the birth of the National
Technological Platform for Textile and Clothing, as a correspondent for the European institution. Thanks
to their expertise and representative roles, both SMI and TexClubTec aim to give support to textile companies, supplying all the tools needed for an effective technological development. Technology platforms have
indeed an essential role in putting industrial and research priorities together, in order to be sure that the
knowledge acquired through scientific research could be converted in effective technologies and processes
applicable to marketable products and services.
So, willing to favor a global technological evolution of the sector and focusing on strategic issues that could
favor technological development such as economic and production growth, sustainability and competitiveness, the National Technology Platform is going to start a new path divided into 3 phases: sharing of a global
vision of the technological horizon to point at, definition of a strategic agenda for scientific research that
points out middle and long-term objectives for technological evolution, implementation a strategic plan for
research for a good mobilization of human and financial resources.
It is the first time that such an authority with such objectives for Textile & Clothing has been created. We
hope to be finally at a turning point for our productive sector, which has to make big efforts to take its
leadership on the international market back.

MULTITEXCO
High Performance Smart Multifunctional Technical Textiles
for the Construction Sector
MULTITEXCO is a European co-funded FP7 project started in October 2013, which main objective is the
definition of guidelines and best practices for the optimal use of smart textiles in the construction industry.
In the last decade, considerable boost in the development of advanced textiles has been provided by a number of research and innovation projects, addressing in particular the construction sector, which represents
one of the biggest markets for composite products based on technical textiles.
Innovation
8
Textile materials are used in construction in both ground and building structures. Unreinforced masonry
structures are highly vulnerable because, being originally designed mainly for gravity loads, they often
cannot withstand the dynamic horizontal loads in case of strong earthquakes. Soil structures, such as
embankments, are subjected to landslides after heavy rainfalls or during earthquakes, as witnessed by the
recent tragic events in the north of Italy. Hence the necessity of efficient methods and technologies for the
retrofitting of existing buildings and earthworks and for the related monitoring, to possibly prevent the
structural damage, is clearly evident.
Examples of advanced composites for the construction sector comprise textile-based structures used for
buildings rehabilitation or seismic upgrading, geotextiles used for the stabilisation of soil structures, such
as railway or roadway embankments, while high performance technical textiles are used for tensile structures covering large areas, such as stadiums or exhibition areas. In all such applications the novel textile
materials potentially offer a brand new functionality in addition to the main functions of the standard
technical textiles, namely the possibility of monitoring the structural health of the reinforced structure.
Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) techniques can be employed at different stages of the construction
life, namely construction, inspection, operation, dismantling, or after a severely damaging event (like an
earthquake), in order to assess the state of the structure and its remaining service life. On the other hand,
as stressed by the CNR-DT 200/2012, the Italian reference normative for FRP reinforcement of civil
structures, monitoring is highly advisable since there is a lack of information on long-term behaviour of
this kinds of reinforcing solutions.
A milestone in this sense has been the FP6 large-scale collaborative EU co-funded project POLYTECT,
ended in 2010, which pushed the state of the art for technical textiles through the development of large
area sensor-embedded multifunctional textiles employing fibre optic sensors for geotechnical and masonry applications vulnerable to natural hazards. One example of the POLYTECT sensor-embedded
multifunctional textiles for masonry structures is the so-called “Seismic Composite Wallpaper”, constituted by a multiaxial textile structure featuring embedded fiber optics sensors of POF (Polymer Optical
Fiber) or FBG (Fiber Bragg Grating) type. When subjected to a dynamic action, the composite structure
works as a passive device able to confine the building bricks, preventing their brittle failure, absorbing
part of the earthquake energy and eventually making the entire structure more ductile and resistant. On
the other hand, the integrated sensors help in understanding the building behaviour before, during
and after a seismic event, by providing real-time
measurements which, depending on the sensor
solution embedded, can be localized or distributed, static or dynamic. They can detect cracks
and/or changes in the dynamic characteristics of
a building, relatable to its potential progressive
failure. The “seismic composite wallpaper”, firstly
developed and tested at lab-scale level, was then
validated in real conditions, applied as full-cover
reinforcement of a two-storeys masonry building
subjected to simulated earthquake in shaking table
tests at Eucentre (Pavia).
However, despite the above described benefits and
potentials showed by the prototypes developed in
the frame of POLYTECT, the market uptake of
such solutions is not as expected and as the potential of Polytect would have deserved, mainly due to
some issues still partially unsolved: the non-availability of tests methods for multifunctional textiles
to provide certifications; the lack of quantification
models especially for reinforcing textiles, the lack
in codes and standards for multifunctional textiles (standards exist but most of them are for carbon-epoxy systems on RC); and finally the need
for a knowledge transfer to companies in the construction sector to foster the practical adoption of
multifunctional textiles. Moreover, without quantification of reinforcing effect textile reinforced
masonry will hardly be able to compete with standard reinforcing techniques and therefore market
uptake will be hardly reachable.
Indeed, many building practitioners are still unfamiliar with the behaviour and the characteristics of
these materials. Shortage of information to the design and construction community about use and
properties (mainly long-term behaviour) of these
materials limits their exploitation potential and
consequently their practical adoption. Moreover,
as these highly innovative solutions are derived
either from modification of existing materials or
from newly developed high performance textile
materials, in general new codes, specifications,
guidelines and standard test methods are required
for the purpose of their design, use, testing and
certification.
In this framework, the aim of MULTITEXCO
project is to support the competitiveness of the
European SMEs of the construction, composites
and technical textile sectors by addressing the
above needs by developing scientific knowledge,
testing procedures and guidelines for the design
and use of the novel smart textiles and composites
for the construction sector. The following textile
application fields will be targeted by the project:
masonry seismic reinforcement, geotechnical applications and structures. The project will address
the needs of the SME members of 5 Associations
throughout EU to access to the newly developed
smart textiles in a more efficient, effective and
profitable way. The project is coordinated by
TEXCLUBTEC, the Italian association of technical textiles, and includes in the consortium also
Innovation
9
the Belgian association UNITEX, as well as the construction associations CATIDER (Turkey), VPI
(Germany).. Moreover the project includes three SMEs, SELCOM (Italy), Arimeks (Turkey) and Maco
Technology (Italy) and four RTD performers entrusted to carry out the research activities in the frame
of the project: D’Appolonia (Italy), Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany), Acciona (Spain) and
Centexbel (Belgium).
In order to achieve its overall goal, the project will pursue the following main scientific and technological
objectives:
1) To identify and characterize the performances of the solutions developed, through laboratory work and
field tests. This activity will also lead to design and application procedures.
2) To provide a scientific basis for the new multifunctional textiles in order to favor the standardization
process at the EU level, also by means of a close link with the standardization bodies, taking into account
the peculiarities of the new generation of multifunctional textiles and smart composites.
In this framework, of particular interest for the project will be the proposal to introduce a “Seismic Certification of buildings” since it could provide a clear standard where the performance, impact and benefit of
innovative solutions for masonry buildings will have a fertile context. Discussions on this certification are
ongoing in Italy, examples have been proposed by the orders of professional engineering of some Italian
regions/province and the Ministry of transport and infrastructures is promoting a working group. Fi-

nally, insurance companies are looking forward to
the introduction of insurance policy for buildings
based on a seismic certification. If all these actions
will become reality in the near future, MULTITEXCO will be ahead in receiving the directives,
standards and guidelines implemented. The Project results will be made available to the SME Associations by means of a collaborative web-based
knowledge platform, which will include a decision
support tool enabling the user to select the most
suitable solutions and products according to the
type of intervention, the application scenario and
the cost target. At the current status of the Project,
on the basis of an extensive analysis of the available
solutions, as well as of preliminary laboratory tests,
the systems configurations that will be further
experimentally investigated are being defined for
each of the target applications. In particular, for
masonry application, MULTITEXCO is investigating improved solutions based on multi-axial
hybrid textile structures having embedded not
only optical fibers (for which specific configurations are under selection), but also additional
sensors in order to enhance the performances and
the monitoring capabilities of the system. For the
geotechnical application, biaxial geogrids with distributed optical sensor, in-line embedded during
production (Fig. 1), are being preliminarily tested
(Fig. 2). Results are promising in terms of sensors
accuracy and ability to detect the deformation of
the geogrids.
The project has received funding from the 7th F.P.
of E.U. (Grant Agreement n° 606411).

Advanced Material Textile for
reinforced Structures for Complex
Lightweight Applications
One of the priorities in transport but also others industries (building and energy) is to develop
lightweight complex structures with high mechanic and quality performances, in order replace
the metallic heavy pieces. In fact, the demand of energy efficient environment friendly vehicles
for transport industries is increasing. Such vehicles are expected to be lightweight for less energy
consumption as well as for minimum CO2 emission, high performance, reliability, recyclability,
cost effective production, safety and comfort. An important issue is to reduce the material types,
to enhance recycling, but without scarifying the notion of performance at affordable cost. The
needs concerning composites structure is increasing; however there is still major breakthrough
limit acting against their development, which are the following: high cost production, long and
labor-intensive production, quality issues, lack of versatile and flexible process, tailored properties
difficult to achieve with current technologies, low qualified skillness.
The most advanced sector for composites is aeronautic. But the composites development is disparity according to the sector of application. For example rail is arguably behind the curves on the
composites adoption compared to aerospace. Today’s mainline rail vehicles tend to be extensively
composite inside outside and especially structural, still mainly metal. In contrast, the latest airliners are 50% composites including their load bearing primary aero structures. Why the disparity?
The rail and the air vehicles have much in common. They are both fast moving passenger carrying
tubes that are prone to static and dynamic stresses plus material fatigue over long and intensive
services lives. Fire is also a potential hazard in both cases so the structures have to be engineered
to minimize this and also with crashworthiness in mind. Comfort is also important.
The development of interior composite can be explained by the fact that they have clearly an
impact on weight and on the operating costs and profits. 10% s in the mass of metropolitan rail
vehicle can reduce energy consumption by 7 %, saving up to US $ 100 000 annually per vehicle.
So the review of the composite development is explained by the lack of knowledge about all the
steps of development of composites manufacturing. The substitution of metal part for transport
application requires lot of efforts, time and transversal competences to optimize the composite
structures and to insure the maximal level of safety during the use. However integration of this
new technology soars lot of issues regarding:
- The technology to be used featuring resin,
material and assemblies (laminated, honey
comb, sandwiches structure);
- The processability, the manufacturing and
integration of the composite part into the conventional steel environment – sealing, junctions. The integration study shall be based on
engineering studies that have been fueling for
years with date based on steel assemblies;
- The mechanical properties and their modelisation approaches -fueled with new inputs
based on reliable models connected to composites, whereas for metal - greater uniformity,
a number of simulation tools exist;
- The fire safety issue, in the frame work of the
implementation of new safety standard at a European level (ex: EN 45545-2), which tends to
complicate this step.
The concept of MADMAX
The composites offer a great potential for reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions,
for example by contributing up to 50 % of
bodyweight reduction compared to steel and at
least 30% compared to aluminium. The main
challenges to be faced in order to develop composite materials for the civil transport industry
regard: the various manufacturing processes
and structure components (constituents), their
durability as well as their deformation, damage
and fracture modes for instance in case of impact. Textiles can be considered as the skeleton
of the composites, mathematical models predicting the textiles properties (and mechanical
behaviour in the more broad sense) give more
solid foundation for a priori prediction of mechanical properties of composites, allowing accounting for geometry peculiarities; industrial
partners should be informed about the different possibilities to manufacture complex preform and how to use them for the realization
of composite parts at acceptable cost. Related
to the substitution of the aluminium or metal
surface the scope to use also textile electrically conductive offer a way to achieve the same
properties as metal and security application
where the electronic devices are installed and
the range of conductive textiles structure offer
a new solution for ensure the shielding performances and electrical conductivity.
One of the most promising and efficient way to
fulfil the of composites in the civil transport industry is to promote solutions whose applications are already consolidated in other sectors.
The choice of new composites able to replace
specific parts will depend on the expected and
safety requirements. Also note that study will
feature composites and also hybrid assemblies
(metals + polymers structures).
Innovation
11
The objectives of MADMAX
The objective of this project is to constitute a cluster of private and
public laboratories supported by key manufacturers from aeronautic,
automotive and railway sectors in order to investigate the possibility to
benchmark specific composites; in extreme synthesis, the research efforts
split for each single transport sector, will concern:
- Aeronautic: depending on the target application and, by means of data
collected from former tests and experiments, the study and identification of the best safety requirements for the new materials, as well as the
detection of the most suitable range of composite materials;
- Automotive: study and screening of the best manufacturing processes
to produce composite parts at acceptable costs, guaranteeing the profitability of such industry;
- Railways: research of the most suitable standards for structural composite materials characterization, a special care will be given to fire safety
requirements.
MADMAX project main scientific and technical items pertain to:
- study and identification of high performance functionalized materials
to realize 3D complex preforms;
- research of autonomous sensor systems as well as their incorporation
inside the preforms to monitor the composites structures;
- development and definition of a new concept of standard not limited
to materials qualification but widespread to that of composites sector
actors (i.e. SMEs, LEs, universities and R&D centres); in practice all
available and suitable data regarding enterprises (e.g. background, market, knowledge, competences etc.) will be collected in a database that is
going to be a new tool allowing self promotion for all registered enterprises.
- recognition of the most suitable advanced simulation tools for fundamental understanding of the structure/property relationship in structural composite materials for aerospace, railway and automotive sectors.
Finally MADMAX ultimate goal is to promote the widespread, within
the composites sector, of high performance flexible materials with significant improved mechanical behavior and integrated functions such
as: structural health monitoring and self-healing of structural composite
materials.
MADMAX will contribute to the development of an European “KnowHow” platform and database for excellence in polymeric high performance fibres, textile reinforcing structures (performs above all) and sensors monitored composite structures in order to foster the transfer of
scientific results to civil transport market, and especially to SMEs.
The consortium
The MADMAX project brings together European clusters (Texclubtec,
IVGT, Uptex, Railenium) with industrial ( Kringlan, ESI, JTT, Soliani)

StorePET: smart
nonwoven thermal
insulation materials for
the building sector
Different manufacturing technologies were researched at lab scale, either
by developing bi-component PCM-fibres systems using electrospinning
and coaxial melt-spinning extrusion/injection techniques (Figure 2) and
also by means of spray deposition of microencapsulated PCMs (mPCMs)
and flame retardant on the nonwovens matrices. The later was selected for
industrial scale-up and prototype line production testing, which was conducted in the North of Portugal with the help of a renowned company
(Coltec, Portugal), leader in supplying textile lamination services, direct
bindings, thermo-adhesive coatings, self-adhesive coatings and films.
A European research project
aimed to cut down energy
consumption of lightweight
buildings
Under the currently growing role for near-zero energy buildings, innovative lightweight structures has been one of the most interesting building
technologies arising. While it represents an economical alternative to traditional heavyweight constructions, the main drawback of highly insulated
lightweight envelopes is still their lack of thermal mass, which unable to
curb and dampen rapid and marked daily temperature swings and maintain
internal comfort conditions, especially during the summer in hot regions.
This quick thermal response is especially significant during the warmer seasons and responsible for indoor overheating trends, forcing the costly peak
period of energy consumption to be spent upon cooling rooms during the
day.
The StorePET project concept was based upon the fact that potential cost
savings can be achieved by smart building envelope structures having a novel fiber insulation possessing active heat storage capacities. This feature is
provided by phase change materials (PCM), capable of reducing the total
cooling loads and shifting the peak loads to off-peak periods. The StorePET
product developed intends to be a ready-to-use and easy to install insulation
blanket, made with recycled polyester fibers and enhanced with a PCM
content. The embedded PCM provides thermal inertia by means of its latent heat, while keeping relatively unchanged the high thermal resistance of
the original nonwoven material.
The base nonwoven material chosen for StorePET were commercial polyester blankets supplied by Freudenberg Politex Srl, Italy. These panels
made of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and obtained from
post-consume plastic bottles were selected for their combined thermal insulating and sound absorbing base properties excellence and eco-friendly
status.
The base nonwoven PET panels were treated and coated with special
formulated organic microencapsulated PCMs (mPCMs) and flame retardants supplied by Devan-Micropolis SA, (Portugal). Before going to
production, the right formulation was studied, laboratory tested and optimized in the early stages of the project work program. The right PCMs
were selected based upon many different factors including, among many,
indoor thermal comfort condition ranges, typical market location seasonal climates, PCMs melting/freezing phase transitions temperatures, latent
heat of fusion/crystallization ranks, supercooling and stability under multiple cycles trends, etc.. Complementary, the research group was aided by
dedicated modelling simulation tools also generated within the project by
the research partner Inspiralia (Spain), in order to assist the right selection
of the type and amount of PCM to reach the required thermal properties
for different climate patterns.
The trial spray deposition treatment was performed using an adapted
industrial spray machine, followed by a drying and curing step inside a
conventional conveyor dryer (Figure 3), showing the innovative scalability
StorePET production. Treated panels were fully characterized by two of
the project research partners, IPN (Portugal) and Centrocot SpA (Italy),
in order to assess the thermal and physical properties of the novel insulation solution and, consequently, evaluate the effect of the PCM heat storage capacity. Hot-box tests proved to be possible for StorePET to attain
up to a 33% reduction in cooling demands, when compared with similar
non-additivated polyester panels, while still securing a common thermal
insulation lambda value around 0.04W/mK.
Following the characterization work at lab scale, the research partner Acciona (Spain) has installed the StorePET panels to evaluate its behaviour
in comparison to traditional fiber blankets and to have a more in-depth
demonstration of the novel PCM-fiber panel thermal and acoustic performance. Two small demo-buildings were separately insulated with

StorePET and with traditional polyester panels having no PCM content and were left to be continuously monitored over one year, considering variables like daily outdoor/indoor temperature
variation, acoustic behaviour, energy consumption and heat fluxes. To carry out the demonstrations
needed, a demo park located in Alcobendas – Madrid, Spain has been selected as the testing facility
(figure 3).
This demo park is run by the NanoE2B Cluster initiative, a continual co-operation between several
European projects aiming the development of innovative materials and systems for energy efficient
buildings, Supported by the Seventh Framework Program of the European Commission under the
theme EeB.NMP.2010-1 “New nanotechnology based high performance insulation systems for energy
efficiency”, the E2B Cluster Demo Park counts on excellent weather conditions (temperatures varying
from -8ºC in Winter and 40ºC in Summer), no shadowing effects and special electric and electronic
features which make demonstration easier and more reliable.
After data analysis, results gathered during the testing period have shown StorePET having similar
acoustic properties and much better thermal performances, when compared with the reference material having no heat storage capacities. Thermal and dynamic monitoring for the two mock-ups has
demonstrated that differences in composition have a direct effect on internal temperature (room temperature) in favour of StorePET mock-up, which enhances building envelope thermal inertia. Averaged peak-to-peak field test analysis (example given in Figure 5) have revealed average internal temperature differences of around 1°C during the day and 1.5°C during the night, between the StorePET
and the standard test-cells for a typical summer period.
Parallel energy consumption tests made with the help of controlled cooling systems showed also that
the thermal inertia improvement has a clear effect on the energy demand for cooling systems. Under
this context, 128h field test examples have revealed energy consumption differences of around 40%
in the electric demand for the StorePET demo
building, when compared with the one having
no PCM heat storage capacity skills (StorePET
826 Wh vs Reference cell 1335 Wh). These evidences coming from a real-scale demonstrations
could serve StorePET product to be introduced
as a reliable alternative to commercial solutions
presently in the market, by being capable of
showing their enhanced features with solid and
scientific results obtained both in laboratory
and a real-scale monitoring campaigns.
Apart from being a ready to install product, a
remarkable characteristic of the StorePET technology is the flexibility to produce tailor made
products for different climate conditions and
the versatility of its usage in virtually all lightweight building insulation applications for wall
and roofs, featuring also the easiness to be cut
on-site, to be bended for curve surfaces, etc.).
As part of the research a second simulation tool
has been developed, not only to aid in the selection of the type and amount of PCM required
for different climate conditions/locations, but
also to clearly attest the efficiency of StorePET
in many possible building construction types,
including the usage of ventilated façade systems
to promote the daily charging/ discharging cycle
capability of the PCM content.
With a preliminary product life cycle assessment (LCA) already preformed during the project and most of the characterization needed to
secure CE marking and green labelling secured,
the consortium is currently considering the
right partnerships for the commercialization of
this novel fiber insulation and make its market
entrance in specific markets in a near future.

WASH&LOAD
A new business model for the
industrial laundries based on the
refunctionalisation of protective
clothing during the washing cycle.
On 30th September 2014 the FP7 European co-funded WASH&LOAD project has been completed. Three days later, after a successful final review meeting with the European Commission,
the commercial exploitation phase of project results has been launched in the framework of
EXPO Detergo event organized by the CINET (the international umbrella association for the
textile care) and hold in Fiera Milano RHO (Milan, Italy) where TEXCLUBTEC was between
the participants as member of the project Consortium.
The WASH&LOAD project aimed at introducing a new paradigm in the Textile Care sector by
developing a refunctionalising process for PPE. As a matter of fact, the WASH&LOAD project
goal was to scientifically characterize latest achievements in science and technology for the development of Guidelines and Pre-normative research aimed at supporting the more than 20,000
SMEs involved in the functional clothing value chain in implementing cost-effective practices for
reloading protective functionalities in protective clothing and textiles during life cycle.
The current solution for the PPEs is a level of functionalisation that can last a predetermined
number of washing cycles (e.g. 50). The PPE is supposed to be disposed after this number of
cycles, independently on the real state of the equipment, although there are wide evidences that
discrepancies between expected and real degradation may be substantial according to conditions
of use. It may indeed be the case that protective functions have already declined before the number of standard washing cycles, because of excessive abrasion or other damages specific to end use.
This drastically reduces the level of protection and furthermore exposes the employer to liabilities
in case of accident or illness.
The project aimed at a new product/process/service system based on a monitoring system controlling the concentration of chemicals in the bath during the re-functionalisation process ensuring that the correct level of functional agent is released on the textile; the re-functionalised
garment is checked again after the process to assess the functionality level and validate the process.
These elements provide the combination of a new product/process/service system, drastically
extending the business model of the laundry business.
Addressing these challenges was beyond the capability of a single SME and required a collective
R&D effort lead by SME groupings and associations at European and national level. For this
reason the WASH&LOAD consortium was composed by 14 partners including 5 SME Associations, 4 SMEs and 5 RTD Performers from 4 different European countries and it was led by
the Italian engineering company D’Appolonia (Project Coordinator). CINET, in her position
as international umbrella organization for the textile care and Technological Knowledge Center
Textile Care (TKT), in the Netherlands, had a leading role in defining the requirements for the
development of the processes. D’Appolonia
developed the WASH&LOAD concept, together with TKT and IRIS-SW (Switzerland)
replaced then by the Italian company IDP srl.
University of Twente was responsible for the
identification of the chemical agents able to
functionalize the PPE. Federation Textile Care
Netherlands (FTN) disseminated the project
results and cared for trainings as well as IPR
for the developed system. Deutscher Textilreinigungsverband (DTV) and VTI both from
Germany had a leading role in building and
spreading the project and the developed processes. Lavans and Varo srl performed a special role in the development of pilots and their
validation. WSP Systems was responsible for
the implementation of the textile identification system and the monitoring software. Texclubtec (Italy) with STFI (Germany) faced the
standardization aspects.
At the end of the project, the target objectives
of WASH&LOAD have been fully achieved.
Special attention has been paid during the
first phase of the project in the definition
of requirements and specifications for the
WASH&LOAD product-service system identifying strengths and weaknesses of the current
approach and physical constraints. The objective of this work has been the adaptation of the
laundry process to include re-functionalisation
service, privileging approaches that require the
minimum modification to the existing laundry
equipment in order to make easier the exploitation of the WASH&LOAD results and convenient from an economic point of view. This
phase oriented the research activities during
the project which have been focused on:
1) The scientific characterization of the chemical agents able to provide the targeted functionality to the PPE: the functional agents for
the 3 envisaged functionalities (antibacterial,
soil repellency and flame retardancy) have been
selected and characterized.
2) The development of a monitoring system
able to control the functional agent concentrations during the laundry process and to assess
the functionality level assessment: a prototype
of the monitoring system has been developed
and implemented in industrial washing machines.
3) The overall reengineering of the laundry
process.
4) The definition of guidelines for the implementation of the refunctionalisation process in
industrial laundries for the 3 selected functionalities.
5) The development of the Knowledge based
Platform as well as the of life cycle monitoring tool based on RFID technologies and able
to monitor the overall process and the level of
functionalisation on the PPE after the process.
The aim of the web based Knowledge Management Platform and the associated Decision
Support Tool is to rationalize the knowledge
Innovation
16
developed in the frame of the project in order to support the users to
exploit this knowledge. The Knowledge Management Platform to be
owned by the participating industrial associations, containing information about the research developed in the frame of the project, costs,
performance, applicability of the different technological options, thus
supporting SMEs in the selection of the most appropriate methods for
their products and their production, enabling a novel business model.
The sections of the Knowledge based Platform are accessible from internet by user name and password (the access is guarantee by licences) and
will feature a continuously updated database of chemical products that
can be used within the re-functionalisation system divided by function,
application, suitable textiles etc. with the purpose (Decision Support
Tool) of guiding the SMEs in choosing the most suitable functionalisation solution for each specific application.
6) The validation of the overall concept in an industrial laundry during
the demonstration activities. The implementation of the WASH&LOAD system has been carried out in the premises of the Dutch laundry Lavans where the different components of the system have been
fully validated. In particular the demonstration activities have been fo-
cused on two functionalities: antimicrobial and soil repellency.
Antimicrobial functionality is important because it protects against
cross contamination which is one of the most important health risks in
hospitals, homes for the elderly, the food industry or even the hospitality
sector.
In the industrial environment, soil and stains can lead to risks or even
accidents or injuries. Flammable soils, chemical spills or other soiling
should therefore be repelled. As far as the food sector is concerned,
serving food and beverages often leads to spots and stains, which harm
images of restaurants, bars and caterers, and which need washing. The
lifetime of garments with soil repellency functions can be extended, because the number of washing cycles can be reduced.
The last phase of the project has been devoted to the definition of the
business model based on specific business cases and to the Life Cycle
Cost Analysis (LCCA) aiming at demonstrating the economical sustainability of the new process/service with respect to the traditional approach.
In particular, the goal of the WASH&LOAD LCCA analysis was to perform a comparative LCCA (i.e. Life Cycle Cost Analysis) among the
functionalised garment washed with State of the Art (SoA) process (i.e.
existing solutions) versus the Innovative process/service (i.e. functionalization process) developed within WASH&LOAD project framework.
The results showed that the economical impacts of the innovative
WASH&LOAD process are lower than those of the SoA process. By
summing up, the general advantages of the WASH&LOAD System are:
1) One system for different functionalities; 2) Refunctionalisation; 3)
Validation and quality control of performance; 4) Increase product lifetime (environmental friendly & cost reduction).
As far as the Market specific advantages: 1) Safety – guaranteed to meet
standards to protect users 2) Hygiene – guaranteed to meet standards to
ensure health and safety; 3) Meeting certification and quality requirements; 4) Representative look; 5) Reduction cleaning costs / effort of
laundering increasing lifetime of textiles.

Textile technologies for sport:
From clothing to service
Since the times of Suzanne Lenglen, a legendary tennis player who removed her dress sleeves to ease
upper limbs movements, sportswear items have been evolving to facilitate and improve athletes’ performances. In the last century, we have been witnessing a phenomenal evolution of textile materials aimed
at improving safety, comfort and performance. As sport outfits are at the interface between human body
and environment, their role of connecting two entities has been the inspiring concept in designing and
developing new products and new functions.
TECHNEWS
19
Active thermoregulation, mechanical protection, and muscles compression are some examples of the main achievements of textile technologies in the recent past. In motor sports man-made materials allowed for better protection from high temperatures and fire, a very
relevant function to protect drivers, and other man-made materials
replaced natural fibers to make mountaineers able to perform and
survive in harsh environments such as the highest peaks in the world.
Notably, in the last three decades outdoor sports materials limits
have been repeatedly extended, so much so that new disciplines
such as kitesurfing or skydiving were made possible. And the last
generation of swimsuits are yet another example of the fundamental roles played by textile technologies in improving performance
as well as in driving changes. As everybody knows, water is a very
challenging environment for humans and swimming requires a very
high energetic expenditure (basically from food intake) to generate
enough mechanical power to move our body (speed of progression,
for instance). This “low efficiency” led researchers to develop “performance-enhancing swimsuits” which provide improved buoyancy,
and the swimming world governing body made historical decisions
to change a set of official rules for the sake of records, audience and
sponsors. Furthermore, such “open to innovate” decisions could be
the best way of fighting drugs abuse doping practices, potentially
harmful to the athletes, and provide a model for many other sports
to evolve.
Thus, optimising the interplay between athletes’ body and surrounding environments is certainly one of the leading criteria to develop
successful products. And here comes the “new kid on the block”,
sensors technology: the current trends are all moving towards this
direction. Flexible, stretchable computers and wearable components
such as motherboards, displays and transducers/sensors are almost
ready for the market after more than twenty years of pioneering
research in leading laboratories and companies across the world.
These newly developed technologies aiming at monitoring athletes’
body functioning will play a major and yet unpredictable role in
improving performance by providing athletes, coaches and, why
not?, global audiences with a glut of information. Data will be collected from various sources (body parts, equipments, environment),
automatically analysed and delivered “real-time” to the end-users.
More accuracy, more control, more sport-specific measurements will
be soon available by wearing the right, tailor-made sensors, preferably embedded into fabrics rather than as stand-alone watch-like
or glasses-like gadgets (some of these not being suitable for contact
sports athletes). Managers and coaches will receive real-time tactical
and physiological clues, so that their decisions might be based on
quantitative data analyses. The future has just started: not only wearables biofeedback monitors but brand new sports data ecosystems
will be soon available on the market. As a result of this evolution, it
is quite clear that the sport gadgets and related technologies market
is moving fast from a product-based to a service-based model. This
new model is mainly driven by dedicated apps providing sports professionals (coaches, managers, doctors) with more or less everything
they need to improve their own performances, so supporting their
athletes with more accurate services. Also, this new framework will
also foster an innovative media coverage redesigned to deliver sports
events to audiences across the world.
The “internet of textile things” will bring sport experiences to a new
exciting level. With one ‘caveat’. The human factor that designers
and product developers should always take into account. Would I
really buy a pair of shoes telling me I need an extra 4567 steps by
10pm tonight to achieve my cardiovascular risks reduction goal?
Probably no.
The point I am making here is that we all like fancy technologies,
but sport is more about enjoyment (and passion and values) than pedantic, obsessive monitoring of biological/environmental data likely
to add stress to my practice sessions or fitness routines instead of en-
TECHNEWS
20
hancing my overall sport experience. Nevertheless, as everybody else,
I am not yet fully aware of the true potential of new technologies in
changing the ways we learn, play and watch our favourite sports. It
is our responsibility, as professionals within the sport industry community, to guide the future evolution of sportswear and offer services
such as better protecting athletes from injuries and illnesses, making
sport participation more enjoyable, prompting sedentary people to
regularly exercise, and facilitating people with disabilities to participate and enjoy their favourite sports. And the textile industry might
play a fundamental role in shaping the future. Not only by embedding (should I say embroidering?) new ‘soft’ electronic components
into fabrics and clothes, but also and mainly by exploiting its DNA,
that know-how which traditionally involves many different competences ranging from developing new yarns to making irresistible
and fashionable some products. Sustainable yarns, nanotech dyings,
smart fabrics, multifunctional finishings and “on purpose” tailorings
will provide solutions to many of the current limitations and, at the
same time, a sound framework where to build integrated functions,
making the future outfits active and interactive, without interfering
with athletes performance.
Intriguingly, some of the recently developed technologies will succeed more rapidly in the world of fashion, where openness to creativity and innovation have been regularly rewarded by customers
everywhere in the world, than in the world of sport, where rules and
tradition are at the core of each sport identity. Nevertheless, many
innovations can be easily exchanged between the two ‘worlds’. For
example, a fabric-display (a wearable screen based on LED technology) now available to the fashion industry may provide useful services
to amateur cyclists and bikers across the world, by making them
more visible in the dark and also by facilitating communication between road users. And here comes the main challenge for the future
tech-textiles designers. The process of designing innovation with di-
verse applications is demanding in itself and time-consuming; and
the only way to make it cost-effective is to build a multidisciplinary
team, so merging different competences and skills to manage this
process as a whole. There is a level of complexity we should avoid
underestimating and we need to keep in mind that being efficient
at integrating needs, technologies, fabrics, functions, costs, wearability and aestethics is a mandatory path to follow. So doing, a new
product will not only be useful and affordable, but also a mean for
the maker to build a collective customer identity and a global community around it (as we have learnt from the most iconic sportswear
products in the last 40 years).
In conclusion, it is worth highlighting that other criteria are relevant
to make successful a textile product and they should not be neglected. Indeed, they should be at the core of the designing process in order to leverage what made sportswear a huge and worldwide success.
Sportswear has changed people’s attitude toward style and influenced
the world of fashion thanks to its unique features such as comfort,
convenience, affordability and, more recently, sustainability. These
characteristics have to apply to the next generation of textiles: “actual wearability” is a very important one as athletes usually move at
fast speed, sometimes facing environmental constraints; “affordable
washability”, by which I mean outfits’ easy maintenance, has to be
achieved without forcing the customers to change their laundering
habits or to remove technologies before washing them; “functional durability”, the ability of tech components to reliably function
for a period of time, should be, ideally, long enough to allow new
technologies to ‘naturally’ replace the ‘out-of-date’ ones; and, finally,
“sustainability”, as whole process ‘philosophy’ shared by makers and
consumers, should be a ‘core value’ of the next generation of sport
textiles.

Argar Technology, synonymous
for safety and comfort of
knitted fabrics for protective
garment
The approach to each project is always
motivated by product reliability. This
makes the difference
ARGAR SRL is the main Italian producer of protective knitted fabrics and accessories complying
with EC-certifications.
The continual R&D activity looking for innovative solutions for Personal Protection, which are
quickly transferred into industrial production, creates new market opportunities.
The functional specifications range from Antistatic property (EN149) to FR property (EN11612),
High Visibility (EN20471), Antibacterial treatments (EN20645 and EN20743), Protection against
Electric Arc thermal effects (EN61482), and all what is needed for Personal Protection without
affecting the comfort performance and the duration of the knitted fabrics.
The KEYWORDS of the future is “Multifunctional Fabric”, but the Future is soon Present in Argar
Technology.
We are regularly producing Protective Multifunctional Knitted Fabrics which gather at a same time
EC-Certifications for Antisatic properties, Flame Retardancy, High Visibility, Antibacterial effects
and Protection against Electric Arc thermal effects.
The above mentioned multifunctional fabrics grant extraordinary washing and drying performance,
some of them even with EN ISO 15797 method for industrial washing.
Low Pilling working process for fleece ensures optimal performance even after several washing cy-
cles, keeping the original aspect of the surface.
The major strength of Argar production is the
high quality standard level and the variety of
available knits with their relevant textile accessories. Minimum dyeing quantities are very low
and without any limitation in the color choice.
Any color, from Pantone® colors to customers’
sample colors can be reproduced on all our knitted fabrics.
Argar produces and ennobles its knitted fabrics
exclusively in Italy.
The new Project 2.0, FIB-RIC and TF-Traceability & Fashion give further animation to
Argar activity with respect to the Environment,
the guarantee of Italian production origin and
the final consumer protection.
Thanks to the Project 2.0, all fabrics in polyester or polyester mixtures can be produced with
recycled polyester yarns coming from post-consumption recycled polyester chips. The collection of plastic waste materials, their treatment
and the production of yarns from recycled fibers
take place in a very limited area of Northern Italy, so that also CO2 emissions in the atmosphere due to long-track transportations of raw
materials are reduced.
The fibers are produced by recycling empty PET
vessels for potable liquids (mineral water bottles), therefore the minimum quantity of antimony (less or equal to 0,01 mg/kg) required for
food industry is secured, and this means absolute guarantee of non-toxic final product.
In order to come to the Certification of yarns
produced with recycled fibers, Argar joined the
Study FIB-RIC, in cooperation with their usual partner Centro Tessile Cotoniero in Busto
Arsizio; the Study aims at comparing the technical specifications of standard polyester fibers
against recycled polyester fibers.
Besides, Argar entered the voluntary program
TF-Traceability & Fashion, a system for the
traceability of raw materials and the production
network developed by Centro Tessile Cotoniero in cooperation with the Italian chambers of
commerce.
The system enables the final customer to verify
clearly where raw materials come from and to
check the transparency of the whole production
chain.
The consumers can choose and purchase a product of which they know the whole story, as it is
clearly written on its label, where they can find
the origin of raw materials and the localization
of the production steps.
Quality Guarantee, Safety, Comfort, Respect
for the Environment and Consumer Protection
are the main goals which push and characterize
Argar activity, always ahead in the state-of-theart textile technology.
No compromise, clear and transparent Certifications, Quality at its maximum level: 100%

PREFER Project
Product Environmental Footprint
Enhanced by Regions
PREFER - Product Environmental Footprint Enhanced by Regions is a project co-financed by the
European Commission’s Life Plus Programme. PREFER started in Octobre 2013 and will finish in
Decembre 2016.
PREFER project aims at fully implementing the European Product Environmental Footprint (PEF)
methodology on 8 different products. The European Commission adopted the PEF by the Recommendation 2013/179/EU.
The project involves 8 Italian clusters placed in Campania, Emilia Romagna, Lombardy, Piedmont
and Tuscany.
One of the involved industrial districts is the Textile and Clothing sectors of Lombardy.
The Lombardy Textile Clothing and Fashion industry is composed by 13 thousand active enterprises that employ about 97,000 workers (year 2012) and represents 22,6% of the national total of the
sector and the regional primacy.
The supply chain is divided into two main sub-sectors: textiles, production treatments and finishing
of yarns and fabrics with more than 5,500 companies, and clothing manufacturing, with more than
9,000 companies. In some provinces, such as Varese, the presence of the textile industry (weaving,
dyeing and finishing) is more pronounced than the clothing one, reaching more than 50%.
The regional Textile Clothing and Fashion industry, despite the persistence of the crisis period,
Product environmental footprint Enhanced by Regions
actively contributes to the positive balance of
export, classifying the Lombardy as the first exporting region for the sector at national level.
Objectives
The main project objective is testing the PEF
methodology at cluster level. Indeed PREFER
aims at supporting the PEF adoption among
small and medium companies (SMEs).
The project tasks allow to reduce the barrier
that SMEs may encounter implementing the
PEF methodology, especially in terms of lack of
human, technical and economic resources.
One of the other objectives of the project is the
realization of simple and efficient tools, available to companies to assess the environmental
impact of their products. The PEF methodology
and related tools can be used for improving the
environmental sustainability of production and
trade promotion.
PEF - Product Environmental
Footprint
PEF is a multi-criteria measure of the environmental performance of a good or service
throughout its life cycle. PEF information is
produced for the overarching purpose of seeking to reduce the environmental impacts of
goods and services taking into account supply
chain activities, from extraction of raw materials, through production and use, to final waste
management.
One important feature of the PEF methodology
is that it sets the basis for comparability of the
results. For this reason the PEF implementation
follows the PEF Category Rules (PEFCR). PEFCRs aim at providing detailed technical guidance on how to conduct a PEF study for a specific product category. PEFCRs provide further
specification at the process and/or product level.
The methodological requirements set out in PEFCR shall also apply to PEF studies.
Potential applications of PEF studies may be
grouped depending on in-house or external objectives:
• In-house applications may include support
to environmental management, identification
of environmental hotspots, and environmental
performance improvement and tracking, and
may implicitly include cost-saving opportunities;
• External applications (e.g. Business-to-Business (B2B), Business-to-Consumers (B2C))
cover a wide range of possibilities, from responding to customer and consumer demands,
to marketing, benchmarking, environmental labelling, supporting eco-design throughout supply chains, green procurement and responding
to the requirements of environmental policies at
European or Member State level;
• Benchmarking could for example include
defining an average performing product (based
on data provided by stakeholders or on generic
data or approximations) followed by a grading
TECHNEWS

of other products according to their performance versus the benchmark.
Expected results
The main project results are the 8 PEF reports concerning the different
“typical” district products.
8 PEFCRs will also emerge from PREFER.
The partners will identify tools and methods to simplify the application
of the PEF by SMEs.
At least 3 pilot companies for each district will test the PEF methodology
and the project partners will support them in the product environmental
improvement.
STeP by OEKO-TEX®
Centrocot certified the
first Italian company 100%
sustainable
PREFER will provide the dissemination of PEF in Italy and in other European countries.
PEF methodology and PEFCRs emerged in the Italian case studies will be
applied to other 3 European clusters. The European clusters will be selected on the basis of their sector, production, and interest in environmental
and sustainability issues.
The case studies on 3 European clusters will enable the Project partners to
improve the PEFCRs and transfer PEF to SMEs in other countries, where
the project’s tools will be successfully adopted.
The certification system for the calculation of the scores and the certificate
is managed by a central computer system in order to make uniform all
over the world the method for calculating the level and global scores.
There are three levels:
Level 1 = minimum level of entry
Level 2 = good implementation with further optimization
Level 3 = exemplary implementation
With the certification STeP by OEKO-TEX®, manufacturers can make
their production processes more efficient.
STeP by OEKO-TEX® allows companies to determine their positioning of
in the field of sustainability and shows them improvement areas.
The certification regardless of the sustainable production, provides textile
producers also a surplus of image, which allows companies to open new
markets and new relationships with suppliers.

The textile comfort: every sense
of the fabric
The attention of sportsmen regarding their clothing is significantly changed with time: today they
don't settle for an article of clothing to wear, but they wish a garment that interacts with them, without
negatively interfere with the activities, but able to improve their performance.
Wellness and comfort have become key elements for the design of Sportswear.
The complex interactions between the fabric and variables such as weather conditions, physiological
and psychological aspects, make the comfort one of the most important features of this type of product, with a strong influence on the acceptance by the end user.
Even today, however, the great criticality is to objectively measure the degree of comfort of a garment,
as the subjectivity connected to these aspects is a
strong element of evaluation.
Centrocot S.p.A. has over the years developed
and optimized a methodology for the calculation
of the Index of Comfort of a fabric. The comfort of a textile may be defined as the degree of
wellness offered by a product to the user; to objectively evaluate it, Centrocot laboratories have
experimented and issued the test methods able of
measuring the two major contributions to comfort, the thermo-physiological and the sensorial
one.
The thermo-physiological comfort of a fabric is
currently regulated by the Technical Report of
the European Community CEN / TR 16422:
2012 "Classification of thermoregulatory properties".
The tests taken in consideration for the characterization include basic parameters such as
breathability, thermal insulation and moisture
management, as well as air permeability, water
repellency and water resistance, that are not direct index of the degree of comfort but are closely
related to it.
The reference standards allow to certify the performance levels of the textile product, through
the indicated analysis and the established requirements, taking into account the climatic conditions (warm and cold) and the type of material
being studied.
However, to refer to the textile comfort in a
complete manner, it’s also important to consider
the sensory perception recognized by the wearer during the use of the garment. To objectively
evaluate the degree of sensorial comfort provided
by a fabric, Centrocot has developed some tests,
such as the hairiness of the fabric, the surface
friction, the flexibility and the absorption time,
which, simulating the conditions of use, allow to
estimate the perceptions of the wearer. The two
measured contributions, the thermo-physiological and the sensorial one, are then combined in
order to evaluate an overall index of the comfort
of the textile product, essential to give an objective evidence of the performance obtained and to
allow the comparison between different materials
at the same use conditions.
In order to meet the needs of customers and consumers increasingly sensitive to the aspects related to comfort, Centrocot has created a Comfort
Mark that, with a judgment of excellence, certify
in a simple and intuitive way the overall performance achieved by the material, exploiting the
characteristics studied through the tests mentioned above.
In this way Centrocot, all along engaged in this
direction, wants to provide an important support
to the companies of the sector, accompanying
them in the development and characterization
of high-performance fabrics, both during the research phase of new materials as well as in the
design stage of new article of clothing studied ad
hoc, according to the potential end uses.

RESET
Research & Innovation in the
Textile of the Future
Objective
The processes of transformation taking place in the textile and clothing sector are changing significantly the articulation of the supply chains. In order
to diversify production, the collaboration between different technological
company fields intensifies, by expanding into untraditional sectors (technical
textiles) in which the functional performance of the product predominate
compared to the stylistic or esthetic ones; the value chain takes advantage of
other sectors that contribute to qualify and improve textiles and often suggest
new ones. The materials and technologies used in the technical textiles field
are the source of many innovations spread in almost every manufacturing
industry and able to meet the European social challenges (in line with the
Horizon 2020 initiatives and the Europe 2020 objectives).
For SMEs will be essential to increase investments in research, participate
to the networks among businesses, universities and technology centers, by
taking advantage of all the available opportunities (e.g. Horizon 2020). This
process should be encouraged to invest in R&D and Innovation also by
strengthening the workers’ skills, by making their qualifications in line with
the dynamics involved.
RESET Project aimed to go through training courses in order to transfer
skills to young workers of the textile industry (but not only), useful to actively participate in the innovation processes, with particular attention to
the development of technical textiles for high-performance applications and
cross-sectoral uses.
Promoting the specific professional role of “textile innovator” can contribute
to trigger a “role awareness” and to introduce young people to the research
careers in the companies, by conveying the image of an industry that has
reinvented itself and provides job attractive opportunities.
Actions
The project has foreseen some educational paths addressed to different beneficiaries and with different lifetime, aimed at transferring skills to participate
in R&D and Innovation projects funded in national and international contexts, in particular:
• Short course (64 hours) addressed to employed workers coming from textile sector or other manufacturer sectors, but interested to technical textiles
and cross-sectoral projects.
• Long-lasting course (700 hours) addressed to students and unemployed
that wish to approach to applied research and innovation.
Innovative aspects
The training project as a whole:
• is in line with the R&D and Innovation trends of the sector and addresses
to the need to adapt the present / future workers skills;
• is multidisciplinary and transfers technical and specialized skills, cross-sectoral;
• is focused to R&D and Innovation careers;
• is up-to-date and connected to processes of longer duration (e.g. Horizon
2020), then learning is spendable both immediately and in the medium term;
• is provided by centers that use advanced laboratories and their intellectual
resources directly engaged in R&D and Innovation and technology transfer
within Europe;
• is using methodologies and innovative contents (e.g. Techniques of systematic creativity, Laboratory of innovation);
• uses new technologies (learning communities, social media, e-learning),
that can also be used after the conclusion.
Achieved results
In terms of immediate results, following the completion of courses, participants have been trained, achieving the job placement for the unemployed and a professional improvement for those already employed.
Expected outcomes
In terms of macro results and developments over time, the project also promotes the following aspects:
• to grow the number of workers able to design innovative and technological
development of the textile industry;
• to increase multi-sectoral collaborations and to improve the use of textile in
non-traditional textile applications;
• to increase collaborations among technology centers and companies for the
joint development of research projects;
• a better use of public resources that fund research for companies;
• to spread a new vision of the textile industry and its professionalism, as a
sector able to generate innovation and high-profile employment and specialization;
• to increase the young people’s awareness on professions of research in the
textile industry;
• to grow the number of companies interested in hiring high-skilled profiles;
• to create partnerships to improve the intervention and replicate it in other
areas;
• to enlarge the learning community for technical innovation.
RESET Project - Research & Innovation in the
Textile of the Future
Thanks to the RESET project, funded by the Lombardy Region and
the European Social Fund, young technicians employed in Research & Innovation Department of textile companies have been
able to attend an updating course for "Multi-sectoral Textile Innovation" and unemployed young people have been trained to operate in the textile enterprises acquiring basic knowledge on materials

Innovation and Growth. Perspectives and opportunities for
Italian Textiles & Clothing.
At its 10th edition, NanoItalTex, the annual event of TexClubTec dedicated to innovation in Textiles &
Clothing, at its 10th edition this year, had been organized in collaboration with Unione Industriale Pratese
and Pointex. This time, it took place in Biella, indeed, with Intesa Sanpaolo as Official Partner. The choice of
Innovation and Growth as main topic was due to the strong will to offer the opportunity to discuss industrial
strategies to be pursued to favor companies’ competitiveness.

Innovazione e crescita
According to what both stated, there is a real gap that makes this shift difficult to be put in action.
For this reason, innovative academic spin offs and start-ups could be favored with no demand for
immediate profit. In this framework, the current situation is distressing: according to data given by
the Politecnico di Torino, only 90 innovating projects out of 300,000 become a reality, giving birth
to about 15 new companies each year.
In this sense, it’s fundamental to build a strong connection between research and production through
training, knowledge and human capital, as highlighted by Luca Paolazzi (Centro Studi Confindustria). He showed that, according to recent studies, the percentage of graduates and investments in
public and private training in Italy are too low. A quality improvement of Italian education at the
same level of advanced countries could increase Italian GDP by 15% (i.e. 234 billion euros) in about
10 years.
In the first session, after the intervention of Lutz Walter (Euratex) about the European Technology
Platform and new opportunities offered by the new research program Horizon 2020 of the European
Commission, Massimo Marchi (Pointex), Andrea Parodi (TexClubTec) and Marino Vago (SMI)
officially announced the birth of the Italian Technology Platform for Textiles & Clothing, supported
by SMI and TexClubTec, as an interface of the European platform. The goal of this newborn authority will be offering companies useful tools to boost technological development in the sector, in a
well-structured and coordinated way.
OFFICIAL PARTNER
Scenarios and opportunities
The conference had been the occasion to point
out trends and current opportunities for Technical Textiles. According to what Aldo Tempesti (TexClubTec) stated in his speech, this sector
grew globally by 2.5% in 2013, that is 27% of
global textile production. Furthermore, considering yearly trends since 2000, growth rates are
respectively 60% and 75% for nonwovens and
composites.
So, technical textiles are an extremely evolving
sector that produces a turnover of 3.5 billion
euros with a strong potential development,
provided that a continuous control of the evolution of market needs and a strong improvement in shifting technological knowledge from
research to business are put in action. In fact,
despite existing potential, some countries such
as China and India don’t stay still. On the contrary, those countries are investing big amounts
in research and production implants. However, there is a strong competitiveness not only
in product development, but also in company
organization in all its aspects, from production
processes to sales.
In such a context, one of the most important
challenges is company sustainability. According
to Filippo Servalli (RadiciGroup), a sustainable production makes are the real difference
between the European and the Asiatic business
models. But, in order to take existing chances
for Italian textile, it is necessary to develop a
business model that makes the shift of research
results from universities and research centers to
companies faster. This topic had been discussed
by Prof. Alberto Cigada (Politecnico di Milano)
and Marco Cantamessa (Politecnico di Torino).
Technological sessions
The 10th edition of NanoItalTex restarted in the afternoon with the presentation of some case-histories of some companies that succeeded in coping with the hard times of past years, gaining a leading
role on the international market thanks to good market strategies.
Paolo Canonico (Saati) presented the evolution of precision woven fabrics for new markets of silkscreen printing, Paolo Piana (Sinterama) discussed the importance of sustainability in automotive
textiles, while Ivano Soliani (Soliani EMC) highlighted existing opportunities in the sector of electromagnetic shielding, so long as the company makes efforts in being able to answer to most demanding requirements of advanced application fields.
Going back to the importance of high quality training, next sessions included some interventions of
young researchers involved in advanced research projects in technical textiles. Niccolò Pini (Kringlan) presented MadMax, research project focused on development and production of thermoplastic carbon tyres while Clemente Fuggini (D’Appolonia) discussed potentialities of multifunctional
smart technical textiles and their application in the construction sector, introducing the Multitexco
project. The session ended with the intervention of Cinzia Tonini (CNR-ISMAC) who presented
developments in textile underlayers for the production of eco-friendly biopolymers.
Round table. Back to Italy?
The conference was closed by a round table, coordinated by Roberto Azzoni (Eco di Biella) focusing
on back reshoring, a phenomenon that’s gaining more and more relevance for international analysts.
This trend underlines how, after delocalizing production abroad, many companies are bringing production implants back to their countries. Prof. Luciano Fratocchi (Università dell’Aquila) introduced
a study led by many Italian universities, focused on the current situation in United States, some European countries and Italy, while Andrea Parodi (Fil Man Made Group) and Gianfranco De Martini
(De Martini S.p.a.) discussed their experiences on international markets.

Sportswear Textiles:
Technological
evolution and new
market scenarios
The sports industry as a whole represents a fundamental business field, involving in its positive trends also other sectors such as textiles, that are employed in many application fields related to sports activities (e.g. clothing for
competitive activities, fitness, footwear, artificial turf, sails for boat-races or
composite reinforcements for skiing or sailing.
According to a survey led by Eurobarometro, about 60 million Europeans
practice sports activities once a week at least, while 65% of the population
practice a sort of physical activity. It has to be underlined how sports activities
are spreading among new age groups, so that it is estimated that about 22%
of over-70s people are still practicing some kind of physical activity. At the
same time, in Italy, the most interesting customer groups are young women,
who buy fashion sportswear goods or practice fitness, and 40/60-years-old
men starting doing sports activities for the first time.
The conference
Consumption trends of sportswear textiles and their most innovative applications had been discussed at the conference organized by TexClubTec
in Milan in June 2014. On this occasion, the relationship between sports
and innovations had been analyzed from different points of view with the
contribution of many renowned experts and producers’ representatives.
The conference, to which about 150 professionals from the textile world
took part, consisted in 3 main sessions. The first one presented the global
scenario, with an overview of the global spread of sports culture, underlining the contribution of textiles, as far as functions and performances are
concerned, and the importance of test methods for the evaluation of textile
performances.
The second part included many interventions focused on the most recent
innovations in sportswear, such as fibers, fabrics, membranes, paddings etc.
Finally, the last session approached the issue of current opportunities for
Textiles & Clothing, in terms of product segmentation and technological
shift to fashion.
Scenarios
After the intervention of Manuela Viel, head of Assosport, that shows
how sports activities are spreading quickly, gaining a strategic social role
also in European policies, Aldo Tempesti (TexClubTec’s Director) gave
data about sportswear and textiles markets, according to which sportswear
good consumption in the European Union is worth 20 billion euros (i.e.
10% of clothing sales) concentrated mostly in Germany, France, UK,
Italy and Spain. It has to be underlined that Italy and Spain represent
50% of the total value of the European production (1.4 billion euros). As
far as the Italian market is concerned, the total value of sportswear was
2.8 billion euros in 2010, and bicycles, snowboards and skis are the most
sold goods.
Later, Prof. Davide Susta, from the School of Health and Human Performance of Dublin, focused on how textiles could give their contribution
to sports performances, through a good planning and in-depth studies of
motion, metabolism and energy balance under effort.
Finally, Gabriella Fusi from Centrocot S.p.a. underlined the importance
and the opportunities for test methods in the evaluation of performance
requirements for the different functionalities applicable to sportswear,
giving an international standard overview of the sector.
Recent innovations for sportswear textiles.
In the second session, many companies gave their contribution showing
to the public some interesting examples of innovations in sports activities,
such as products and technologies related to fibers, fabrics, membranes,
paddings and packaging.
Filippo Servalli of RadiciGroup approached the living matter of sustainability. Also according to the increasing attention showed by customers
and producers, along with the new guidelines included in the ISO 9004
calling for a sustainable growth, synthetic fiber production is assuming
sustainability as an evolution of business, through the development of
sustainable and recyclable fibers and biopolymers.
After that, Sergio Alibrandi from Sitip S.p.a. explained how run-resist and
circular fabrics could become essential for sportswear markets, highlighting the importance of comfort, breathability, thermoregulation and protection against climate conditions that fabrics have to offer. In this sense,
many products offering those kind of functionalities are already on the
market. However specific requirements could not be obtained using only
fabrics. Membranes, obtained through coupling technologies, are needed
indeed. This issue has been discussed by Elisabetta Gaspari of Vagotex
S.p.a. It is essential to maintain the body temperature during sports activities and membranes are suitable to reach this goal, in terms of breathability and protection.
But, sportswear clothing is a combination of many materials whose function is not only protection, but also visibility and brand promotion. About
this topic, Flavio Tironi of Extreme Technologies Solutions pointed out
some refracting solutions for sportswear, directly on yarns, fabrics or by
transfer technologies.
Agostino Molina from A. Molina & C. S.p.a. as a padding producer made
an interesting speech about current evolutions in this sector, presenting
new performing paddings. The session had at its conclusion an intervention by Gianluca Gattucci of Oxyprod/Decathlon that, since representing
the link between the producer and the final market, gave some stimulating
starting points for a future interaction of the whole supply chain, that has
been represented in the course of the whole conference.
Conclusions
The conference ended with an intervention made by Claudio Marenzi,
president of Sistema Moda Italia and owner of Herno, who highlighted
the real importance of the technological shift of innovations from sportswear to fashion, with examples from his personal experience.
Sportswear represents indeed the best link between functionality and
fashion, since it plays an essential role not only in protection, but also
in communication, in which colours, shapes and aesthetics become real
communication tools. In such a context, the fusion between sportswear
and fashion, as well as between functionality and trends, becomes a real
bond among sports activities, lifestyles and brands.
The event ended with the celebration of the 15th anniversary of TexClubTec, that had been also an occasion to favor networking between all
members of the association.

Textiles, Fashion, Sustainability
Interview with Massimo Mosiello,
Milano Unica General Manager
Why has Milano Unica taken it upon itself to champion suppliers that offer fabrics from environmentally friendly companies at its most recent event?
Milano Unica is an important international exhibition hosting every edition hundreds of Italian
and European Textile - Accessory producers. Its role is that of favouring business opportunities
between exhibitors and buyers as well as identifying and proposing innovative trends. Its interest for sustainability has increased over the last editions in which meetings between experts,
companies and Greenpeace representatives have been organized. It must be noticed that many
textile companies having subscribed Detox are Italian and exhibitors at Milano Unica. “In last
five editions, the Catalogue of Sustainable fabrics and accessories had been the best tools to show
visitors how the attention of MU exhibitors is focused on sustainability and green production. In
order to make sure that subscribing companies are answer to sustainability criteria and describe
their productions with the suitable parameters, we entrusted the project management to the most
outstanding consulting agency dealing with sustainability: Blumine/Sustainability-lab. Adhesions
are voluntary but, in order to be listed in the catalogue, companies must provide factual information and documents. We are committed in avoiding any kind of greenwashing. On the contrary,
we aim at ensuring that any information on fabrics and accessories given to customers/visitors is
real and trustworthy in order to make identification easier” says Mr Massimo Mosiello, Milano
Unica General Manager.

MILAN, 4-5-6 FEBRUARY 2O15
Why is sustainability so important to the Italian and global fashion industries?
According to Ms Aurora Magni, expert and Milano Unica consultant, Italian and European companies in general are bound to strict environmental rules and to many certification requirements.
Yet, important as this all might be, it is no longer enough. Fashion brands and retailers are increas-
ingly demanding with suppliers, requesting
specific guarantees that certain chemical components are totally avoided during the production process. The question posed by companies
“How can I turn this into a competitive advantage?” is answered by the catalogue whose
role is to create synergies for a sustainable fashion: an urge for designers, textile and accessory
mills, dyers and printers. We believe that this
trend will increase and strengthen in the near
future.
Which brands are the best examples of
eco-friendly fabric producers that were present at the event?
“During the September 2014 edition of Milano Unica, a research made by sustainability-lab
has been divulged. This research involved 18
international brands such as Armani, Ferragamo, Puma, Vivienne Westowood, Mango,
Oberlap and many outstanding others and
emphasized how important the green suppliers
selection is for their strategies: the sustainable
features of the fabrics by no means must affect
their originality and technical performance.
This is the most important challenge for the
sector” concludes Ms Magni.
What can fabric brands do to be more sustainability conscious?
Sustainability is beyond the mere compliance
of laws: it involves the idea of industry itself:
more respectful of both environment and
manpower, of final consumers and the supply
chain. Being an ethical company is far from
easy but the market is willing to acknowledge
and reward its efforts. Many companies have
understood the competitive advantage of being renowned as ethical and responsible. Fairs
must endorse and support this awareness. This
is Milano Unica’s commitment in favour of
worldwide visitors reaching its premises to see
and touch the best of the European textile production.

The textile industry in
South Korea
Overview of the South
Korean textile market and
sector, developed during
TexClubTec’s visit in the
Asiatic country
Despite its small dimensions and limited resources in terms of raw materials, South Korea succeeded in developing a new industrial trend in the last
30 years, focusing on hi-tech production with many industrial giants such as
Samsung, LG, Hyundai, Daewoo.
Despite suffering from competitiveness of Asiatic countries’ low cost production and having Automotive and Electronics as main sectors, South Korean
Textiles & Clothing is however an important field, with 6,043 companies
(9.7% of the entire industrial sector) and 178,042 employees (updated 2011
– source: Kofoti).
The Korean textile sector employs about 6.8% of the entire population even
if production trends expected for the future are negative (42,754 billion Won
in 2011) because of China and other Asiatic countries’ competitiveness (Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand).
Imports of Textiles & Clothing products reached 12.7 billion USD while
exports amounted to 15.9 billion USD (Source KITA – 2013).
The textile industry is focusing on the development of new materials, aiming
at increase exportations of high added value products, such as aramid and
carbon fibers for automotive, marine and military applications, eco-friendly,
smart and nanofibers.
South Korean consumers distinguish themselves from other Asiatic consumers because of their taste for luxury products and high quality demand. Furthermore South Korea succeeded in coping with the financial crisis, started in
2008, ending 2013 with an increase of 3% in its GDP and, according to data
released by the Bank of Korea, GDP is expected to grow by 3.8% in 2014,
more than the world average (source: Italian Foreign Ministry).
Market trends registered an increase in sales of functional clothing and footwear that could be used also in formal situations, maintaining though high
comfort levels. Expensive and luxury accessories along with cheaper products
are also interesting for the South Korean market.
Retailing is managed generally through stores in shopping mall, but also
through online or hand-list sales.
South Korea – EU FTA
Starting from July 2011 the Free Trade agreement (FTA) between the EU and South Korea entered into force. It includes:
• Tax elimination for European exporters of industrial and agricultural products;
• Better access to the market service suppliers of European countries;
• Non-tariff duty abolition for electronics, pharmaceutical and medical devices.
• Better access to the market for European car manufacturers;
• Better access to public tenders;
• Intellectual property safeguard;
• Competitiveness right improvement;
• Transparency improvement;
• Promotion of sustainable development;
One of the most interesting point is the abolition of custom duties on industrial goods. As far as
textiles are concerned, duties are abolished on all kinds of products with EU origins.
Fundamental conditions that a product should have to be considered as “produced in EU or in
Korea” are:
- Being completely produced in Europe or in South Korea;
- Being tailored in EU
- Being partially manipulated in EU and South Korea. For example, Korean yarns can be imported in the European Union and considered as produced in Europe if they have been tailored
within European borders, except for basic interventions.
This agreement has a remarkable importance because Korea is not only a market addressing
European-like consumers, but also an important base for exports towards other Asiatic countries.

Free port areas
There are 8 Free Economic Zone (FEZ) in South Korea, created between 2003 and 2013 (Busan-Jinhae, Daegu-Gyeongbuk, Gwangyang, Incheon, Saemangun, Yellow Sea, Chung Buk,
East Coast); Those areas offer important business chances for foreign companies that decide to
set up a production activity, thanks to tax breaks, grants, low cost raw materials and manpower.
(Further information about FEZ are available on the following website: www.investkorea.org).
Innovative products
On the occasion of the visit of Texclubtec in South Korea, we stop up at one of the most advanced textile research centers in the world, the “Korea Textile Development Institute” that’s
developing new and innovative yarns thanks to the use of functional nanoparticles, biodegradable polymers, elastic aramid fibers etc. This research center includes a lab for physical,
chemical, mechanical, environmental tests, related to safety and health.
Among latest products launched recently by Korean companies, there are:
- Huvis developed Ecoever, a textile material obtained from PET bottles’ recycling with anti-odor, antibacterial and thermo-regulating properties, and MetaOne, 28-LOI aramid fiber.
- Hyosung developed MIPAN aqua-X, a nylon filament with high absorption skills, short drying
lapse of time and high UV Rays protection for functional clothing.
- Kolon Fashion Material developed Rojel, 0.05 den microfibers, with high comfort characteristics, and Cella an aramid fiber with cotton-like hand and look.
Is it possible to widen business through Social
Networks?
TexClubTec at the Daegu Global Innovation
Festival (DGIST)
Ferrino, producer of sports good and equipment for outdoor activities based in Torino (16 million euro turnover and 56 employees),
creates its first foreign market in South Korea in less than 18 months.
But, wow could that happened? In November 2012, Ferrino started
to build commercial relationships with South Korea through a local
retailer, while all the other main producers where already present on
the Korean market.
The plan was to start a Social Network battle, not only promoting its
products, but also reporting stories and experiences of athletes who
used Ferrino products, along with tv ads and e-commerce strategies.
In few months, Ferrino became a successful company on the Korean market. Customers exchange with each other opinions about
Ferrino’s products and their experience giving good and/or bad
comments on Facebook. Since the big success of Ferrino is increasing continuously, many Ferrino stores were opened in the country
(17 up to now). Now Ferrino is at the second step of its digital development plan: website renovation and launch of a virtual store to
show product offer and sell directly to web customers.
The Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology of Daegu – important Korean industrial area – organized the third edition of the
DGIF conference (20th-21st November 2014), dedicated to new
technologies for applications on which the institute is focused on.
The DGIST is an university advanced research center, established by
the government, aiming at becoming a remarkable referring point
enrolling the most leading representatives of students and researchers from 6 strategic research fields: new material science, energy
system engineering, brain science, robotics, advanced biology.
The conference was divided into several specific sessions, one for
each above mentioned area and it registered the participation of
about 50 lecturers, mainly from American and Korean universities.
There were also 2 Italian speakers: Barbara Mazzolai from the Italian Technology Institute and Aldo Tempesti from TexClubTec, who
gave a speech focused on advanced textile materials for technical
applications.
During the journey in Korea, TexClubTec met many companies and
textile research centers’ representatives from South Korea in order to
pave the way to future collaborations of mutual interest. Since most
part of Korean production is destined to the American market with
big volumes, the main need of South Korea is to create strong partnerships with foreign companies interested in hi-tech products. In
