ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY It is difficult to find an issue that gets general consent and at the same time divides public opinion more than environmental sustainability. In fact, if it is true that air pollution is a matter of concern at any degree, it is just as true that the debate over the search for solutions to this problem is open. We all agree that we should try to pollute less. Since the discovery of the ozone hole, the world has been wondering about what to do. Advances in technology, the growing wealth, the possibility for large groups of the world population of doing things that were not widespread in the past, like travelling, having home heating, buying more than just relief goods, all this has led to air pollution emissions. Giacimento M’Boundui, Congo. Oil field in M’Boundi, Congo. OGGI OGNI PROGETTAZIONE VIENE FATTA NEL RISPETTO DELL’AMBIENTE” Nigeria, Burma. Risaia/ Nigeria, Burma. The idea of environmental protection has become more and more common in the mores of the civil society, everywhere, and nowadays it is a significant part, maybe the most significant one, of the bigger issue of “environmental sustainability”. The importance of focusing on a development that “meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (Brundtland Report, drafted by Norwegian politician and physician Gro Harlem Brundtland in 1987) is now a shared principle. What is not clear yet is how to achieve this goal, given that the world don’t want to go back and that it is not easy to stop the progress in order to reduce air pollution and the attack on nature. Also in 1987, Herman Daly claimed that sustainable development is the result of three general conditions connected with man’s use of natural resources: renewable resources must be used no faster than the rate at which they regenerate; pollution and wastes must be emitted no faster than natural systems can absorb them, recycle them, or render them harmless; the stock of non renewable resources must remain the same over time. Flyreaders has analysed how airlines, oil companies and car manufacturers, have been facing this problem. What came out is, in a certain way, surprising. As a matter of fact, the measures that have been taken feed our hope, beyond any expectations. The airline sector is rapidly directing its attention to the research on different types of alternative energy and projects for the emission reductions. While these are still projects, many rules are already in force. “THE TIME WHEN AIRLINES DIDN’T CARE ABOUT HOW MUCH THEY POLLUTED IS OVER. NOWADAYS ANY DESIGN IS MADE RESPECTING NATURE” says Giuseppe Gentile, the president of Air Italy. “In the next few years we will all have to commit ourselves to modernizing our air fleets with next-generation aircrafts, which will be less noisy and consume less. We think that by the year 2025 consumption will be reduce by 25%,” he adds. The emission of polluters caused by aircraft’s engines is subject to stringent regulations that must be respected in the design phase by the propellers’ constructors. These limits must then be maintained during the aircraft’s working life by means of planned and certified maintenance services. Not least, there is the awareness that low emission engines guarantee high combustion efficiency, this resulting in » 12 AMBIENTE/ENVIRONMENT la vita operativa con interventi manutentivi certificati e tracciati. FLYREADERS reduced consumption and lower operational costs. Aircrafts’ noise near airports is limited by strict rules on the amount of decibels that are audible during the take-off. The refuelling within the airports’ manoeuvring areas must be carried out so as not to cause the pouring of inflammable and polluting liquids. It is therefore necessary, in addition to an adequate design of parking areas, to provide them with fixed refuelling systems on the premises. Among oil companies, which are usually accused of being big polluters, Eni has made the cause of sustainability its own. In particular, the Italian company has concretely committed itself in corporate governance, in the promotion of the development of its operational environments, in technological research and in the search for renewable resources and, of course, in the field of environmental protection. “In addition to its commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Eni believes that it is necessary to continue to pursue its objective of reducing atmospheric emissions and water and energy consumption. In recent years, the use of lower impact fuels such as natural gas and more efficient combustion technologies has allowed for a reduction in the production of substances that are harmful to the atmosphere, mainly for large combustion plants, refineries and thermoelectric plants. The objective of the currently underway gas flaring reduction projects is to decrease gas flaring emissions by 70% by 2012 compared to the 2007 emission values, also fostering local economic development thanks to the reuse of gas otherwise burned in flares for electric generation or for other energetic uses,” points out Eni’s Sustainability Report. In the course of time Eni has received several awards by the main stock exchange indexes for the evaluation on companies’ sustainability: it has been chosen as global leader for the oil and gas sector in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index World. Sustainable development has been among the main goals of the EU’s policies for a long time. In 2001 European leaders formulated the first EU’s strategy for sustainable development, which was updated in the light of the lacks it has shown and to face the new problems in 2006. Among car manufacturers, BMW regards sustainability as a key principle in every step of the production process. This policy is bearing fruit in terms of image. “Since many years, all our plants have been required to save energy and water. We avoid waste and solvents and we reduce noxious emissions wherever it is possible. Today, BMW Group is the world’s greenest car manufacturer in terms of resources utilization,” says Roberto Olivi, BMW Italia’s Corporate Communications Manager. “Our energy-saving measures have already achieved great results: at our Munich Research and Innovation Centre, for example, we use naturally cold groundwater to cool some buildings. That alone saves about 10,000 MWh of electricity and 6,300 tons of CO2 a year. At our plant in Spartanburg in the U.S., we obtain more than half of our total energy requirements from methane gas from a nearby landfill. These are just two of many AMBIENTE/ENVIRONMENT FLYREADERS Lo sviluppo sostenibile figura da tempo tra gli obiettivi generali delle politiche dell’UE. 13 Maldive/Maldives. examples. We do not rest on our laurels. As a matter of fact we are working on additional measures to further reduce our energy consumption in the future,” adds Olivi. The real target for car manufacturers, however, is emission-free mobility. “For the long term, we are focusing on electric mobility and on hydrogen from renewable sources. We are currently gathering valuable insights from a field trial with more than 600 fully-electric MINI E vehicles. This input will be fed into “Project i”, an organizational unit involved, among other things, in developing new mobility concepts for metropolitan areas. The first so-called “megacity vehicle” with an electric drive will be on the market in the first half of the next decade. This is the next logical step on the road to emission-free mobility.” Thanks to its strategy, BMW has reduced the emissions by 15%-20% and the efficiency has improved in equal measure. Between 1995 and late 2008 BMW managed to cut the vehicles’ CO2 emissions by almost 27%. Nobody did better in Europe. The world is waiting, but in the meantime it walks, moves, do things. We all have to try not to consume everything leaving nothing to future generations. Nuova BMW Serie 3 Cabrio www.bmw.it IL PIACERE È FARSI GUA RDARE DALLE STELLE. Isola delle Maldive. A Maldivian island. GUIDE OF THE RESPONSIBLE TOURIST Save our islands. The Maldives have not been unaffected by the calamities that threaten our planet. Global warming and the climate changes related to it, the sea level rise and environmental pollution have taken their toll on these places. We are therefore committed to creating awareness to support and protect our sea and coral reef ecosystem from pollution and destruction. Here are some expedients that will certainly help us in our undertaking: • Don’t touch or take the water off coral, fish and any other sea life forms. • Touching live corals may cause damage or the death of an entire colony; the coral’s new growth can take ten years. • Don’t leave any rubbish. Nonbiodegradable materials can cause long-term damage to the ecosystem. • Don’t collect any seashell, because this may alter the submarine ecological equilibrium. MALDIVE/MALDIVES FLYREADERS • Don’t use gloves, knives, harpoons or spears when going snorkelling or scuba diving. • Don’t give any food to fishes, otherwise they get used to it and they lose their instinct to find food in nature. • When you are leaving, take with you all the non-recyclable items (plastic, batteries, cans...). • Although fishing trips are among the most popular activities practised by our guests, we impose strict rules not to catch fishes that are under the regular size in order to prevent the excessive exploitation of the local fish population. • We take these measures also for the purchase of fish for cooking, in order not to buy from local fishermen any fish or seafood that are under the regular size. The island of the Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu resort is a big half moon covered in sand and palms stretching along the remote Baa atoll, easily accessible by flight from Malé in half an hour. In Divehi, the language spoken in the Maldives, dhuni means “bow” and kolhu “tip of the atoll”. The comfortable Beach Villas (57) and Deluxe Villas (27) are built in the typical Maldivian style and peep out among thin coconut palm trunks, huge long-leaved Pandanus plants, thick bamboo branches and tropical vines. The 14 Lagoon Villas, on the other hand, seem to “float” on the crystalline water. In addition to the three restaurants and two bars, the resort’s guests can feel pampered at the Coco Spa, or they can devote themselves to land and water sports. In 2002 the Coco Palm resort was the first one in the Maldives to get the Green Globe Certificate. The Coco Palm Bodu Hithi was open in November 2006. It is an elegant five-star refuge on the North Malé Atoll, 40 minutes away by motorboat from the capital Malé. The sumptuously refined resort is located on a beautiful luxuriant private island, where sandy paths stretch among mangroves and coconut palms. The Coco Palm Bodu Hithi perfectly embodies the “barefoot luxury” philosophy. Besides, it was built according to the most advanced five-star lodging criteria in order to guarantee the utmost privacy and tranquility. The structure includes 100 deluxe villas, all equipped with their private swimming pool: they are classified as “Island Villas”, “Water Villas”, “Escape Water Villas” and “Escape Water Residences”, which were inaugurated in November 2007. 19 20 L’INTERVISTA/THE INTERVIEW FLYREADERS IL VOLO DI AIR ITALY “Air Italy è una realtà importante nel panorama delle compagnie aeree italiane. Disponiamo di AIR ITALY’S FLIGHT “Air Italy is an important reality of the Italian airline scene, but it aims at becoming something more. Air Italy wants to become Italians’ airline. It is not easy, it will take some time, but we will succeed.” Alessandro Notari, Air Italy chief commercial and financial officer, is not afraid of saying what he thinks. However, if it is true that numbers are never wrong, those describing Air Italy’s first five years of life are a real success story, which seems to have just begun. IN THE LAST 13 MONTHS THE AVERAGE PUNCTUALITY RATING OF OUR FLIGHTS HAS REACHED 94%. L’INTERVISTA/THE INTERVIEW 21 IN 1780 GIORNI GLI AEREI SONO DIVENTATI 12, IL FATTURATO È CRESCIUTO A 250 MILIONI DI EURO, I DIPENDENTI SONO DIVENTATI 700 E I PASSEGGERI SONO 1.300.000. IN 1,780 DAYS OUR AIRCRAFTS HAVE BECOME 12, OUR TURNOVER HAS REACHED 250 MILLION EUROS, OUR EMPLOYEES HAVE BECOME 700 (NEARLY ALL OF THEM WITH OPEN-ENDED CONTRACTS) AND OUR PASSENGERS ARE 1,300,000. “We started in 2005 with two aircrafts. In 1,780 days our aircrafts have become 12, our turnover has reached 250 million Euros, our employees have become 700 (nearly all of them with open-ended contracts) and our passengers are 1,300,000. Today we have a big headquarters in the town of Gallarate with a parts warehouse that is worth 25 million dollars,” says Notari. “Our appraisal, also thanks to a steady business enhancement, foresees a 270-280 million Euro turnover this year and a million and a half passengers. And we don’t intend to stop now.” “The secret to grow is simple: finding consensus. It works like this for any company. An airline requires some key factors: interesting routes, fair prices, flawless service including punctuality, top-level safety. If you reach these goals the customer becomes your first sponsor and the success is guaranteed,” explains Notari. Of course the dangers for an airline can be many. “First of all a financial crisis like the one that has been affecting the world for 18 months now, the worst crisis since 1929. But we were well organized and we hold out. While others closed the year in big loss, we reached an operating break-even without damaging our customers. We are a young and dynamic company that is ready to take the opportunities offered by the market thanks to its flexibility, combined with an undisputed operating leadership,” adds Notari. “For Air Italy the year 2010 has started very well, with a significant strengthening of its presence in Italy, where the connected airports are now 10: Napoli/Milan Orio al Serio, Naples/Palermo, Rome/Turin, Turin/Catania , Verona/Catania, » 22 L’INTERVISTA/THE INTERVIEW Alessandro Notari Noi siamo una compagnia che coniuga qualità e prezzo, consapevoli che questa strategia paghi. E poi siamo la compagnia del sorriso. WE ARE AN AIRLINE THAT COMBINES PRICE AND QUALITY, BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT THIS STRATEGY PAYS OFF. BESIDES, WE ARE THE SMILE AIRLINE. “Alleanze importanti. FLYREADERS Verona/Palermo, Genoa/Palermo. In particular, Verona and Naples are two key cities for the domestic transportation. “Verona is our hub, we are the airport’s second airline. In Naples our growth is very important, we aim at becoming leaders. Besides it is not by chance that we are the official sponsor of SSC Naples. But I could not omit also the sponsorship of Angelico Biella, the third-ranked basketball team in the last national championship.” International destinations are countless. One thing Notari is proud of about his “creature”, Air Italy, “in addition to healthy and highly certified balances”, is flight punctuality. “This is not a merit that anyone can boast. In the last 13 months the average punctuality rating of our flights has reached 94%. For people who travel by plane, especially for business customers, punctuality is extremely important. For us this result is an extraordinary feather in our cap.” Don’t say it is a low cost airline. “We should ask our passengers, Flyreaders’ readers, if we are a low cost airline. The fact that we often have very low fares, above all if the booking and the purchase of the tickets are carried out in advance, might lead one to think of low cost airlines. But we don’t impose any luggage limits, apart from the 20 kg normal allowance. We don’t force our customers to check in online, otherwise a surcharge will be added. We don’t force anyone to buy anything more than the ticket, like travel insurances, text messages, priority boarding and so on. We are not a low cost airline. We are an airline that combines price and quality, because we know that this strategy pays off. Besides, we are the smile airline. If all these things were not true I could not say them to our magazine, which is read by all our passengers,” claims Notari. Any plans for the future? “Important alliances. An even better service. A direct contact with our passengers. In fact, I take this opportunity to make a request: write us, one page of Flyreaders is going to be taken up by your letters. Write us what you think about us, what we have to change, which problems you dealt with. Don’t praise us, you already do it by flying with us. Pic Nic restaurant, San Candido. IN VIAGGIO PER VOI/ON THE ROAD FOR YOU FLYREADERS Located less than two hours from Verona, San Candido is the ideal place to discover the Dolomites, which are considered as the most beautiful mountains of the Alps both for their amazing natural shape and the efficiency of their facilities. During the winter, when snow silences any noise softening and bringing out the town’s wonderful atmosphere, San Candido is a magic place, while in the summer its colours and its landscapes become particularly bright. Nothing is left up to the fate. San Candido is the typical mountain resort where skiing is not the only good reason to choose it as your holiday destination. In this regard, we have two suggestions: in the beginning of December the Krampus’ parade. They are dreadful “monsters”, incredibly scary masks. These disguised devils accompany Saint Nicolò during the traditional parades both in San Candido and in Dobbiaco. In the spring and in the 25 summer, it is beautiful to go from Lienz to San Candido by bike. You can rent a bike at the train station and ride 55 kilometres (nearly all downhill) up to Austria without any effort. From here you will be able to go back to San Candido by train putting your bike on special carriages. WHERE TO SLEEP At the SportTyrol, a beautiful four-star hotel in the old town centre. Although it is a long-standing hotel, the recent renovation is clearly visible. There are a large indoor car park, a wellness centre with a swimming pool, an excellent restaurant and comfortable rooms. A love project for culture in the heart of Verona. With around a million visitors every year, Juliet’s house in the historical centre of Verona is among the FLYREADERS most important tourist and cultural attractions both of the city and of Italy. Next to the house, which is the setting of Shakespeare’s most famous love story, there is Verona’s Repertory Theatre. Its terrace overlooks the courtyard that is famed for the many love dedications hung on the walls. Until now these messages were just considered as ephemeral and they were periodically removed to bring the site back to its pristine conditions. Hence the project LoveStone – Carve your love on Juliet’s balcony, which has been conceived to offer the chance to write one’s own love dedication in the cult place of lovers. In Italy this is a novelty, in the wake of some similar international experiences like the wall of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London and Hollywood Walk of Fame. Taking part in this project means leaving a sign in history. THE LOVERS’ TERRACE The surface of the terrace is covered with 70,000 limited-edition tiles on which you can engrave your signature thank to a special advanced technology. A proposito, “nosy” significa isola. La costa orientale è circondata dalla THE WILD HEART OF MADAGASCAR Its name evokes ancient pirate raids. It is the land of lemurs, of rosewood tree forests and red roads because of the ferrous subsoil. Madagascar takes the wind of Africa and the blue of the Indian Ocean to blend them into a unique biodiversity and it becomes a destination far from beaten paths, the ideal place for those who can’t decide between Seychelles and Mauritius, the other “famous destinations” of the third ocean. Honeymoons often combine these journeys in order not to give anything up by enjoying the utmost relaxation on the beach and the energy of a still pristine nature. Madagascar is the world’s fourth largest island, it is over twice bigger than Italy. It became famous also thanks to DreamWorks and its 2005 animated movie. It is no coincidence that the film praised the world of animals and that it told about their escape from the zoo to go back to their native environment. Can it be a metaphor for your holiday? Of course it can: you only need to think of Sainte Marie or Nosy Iranja. By the way, “nosy” means island. The Sainte Marie island. It is 65 kilometre long and 5 kilometre wide island off the north-east coast of the country. This slice of land, which is covered with vast stretches of forest Nosy Tanikely/Nosy Tanikely. barriera corallina, quella occidentale ospita la migrazione delle balene megattere che provengono dalle fredde acque antartiche e qui si fermano da metà luglio a metà ottobre, per svezzare i piccoli e accoppiarsi. A sud di Nosy Be, conta quattro isole: Nosy Kalakajoro, Nosy Ovy, Nosy Antany Mora e Nosy Valhia. I 28 chilometri di strada da Hell Ville (il capoluogo) alla bella spiaggia di Andilana (a Nord) conduce ai luoghi » MADAGASCAR/MADAGASCAR 29 where lemurs live and orchids flourish, was once the refuge of famous pirates, whose legends are still remembered nowadays. The eastern coast is surrounded by the coral reef, while the western one hosts the migration of the humpback whales that come from the cold Antarctic waters and stop here from the middle of July until the middle of October to wean their calves and mate. These cetaceans are 15-20 metre long and they can be easily approached by boat. They are so sociable that it is possible to swim with them. Among the main trips, we can suggest the cemetery of past pirates, the natural swimming pools, the forest. Discovering the island on a bike or on a motorbike is wonderful, although its road network is not in very good conditions. There is also a diving centre that offers scuba diving excursions to admire the coral reef and the many wrecks lying a few metres off the coast. Nosy Iranja. 90 minutes boat ride from Nosy Be is Nosy Iranja, an island formed by two atolls connected between them by a sand isthmus that disappears when the tide is high. Here tortoises lay their eggs. This is the ideal destination in the same way as the other “Nosy” islands, Sakatia, Tanikely and Fahinihi. The Mitsio islands. This wild archipelago, a paradise both for divers (at any level) and for snorkelists, lies around 65 km northeast of Nosy Be and it is made up of five different atolls, of which only one is inhabited by fishermen: the Great Mitsio, Nosy Lava, Nosy Ankarea, the Four Brothers and Nosy Tsarabanjina. » Dall’alto: terra rossa del Madagascar, lemure, scorcio Nosy Be, veduta istmo Nosy Iranja. From above: red land of Madagascar, lemur, view of Nosy Be, view of the isthmus Nosy Iranja. STOP AL DISBOSCAMENTO Sopra, veduta di Nosy Be. Sotto, tovaglie ricamate in un villaggio di Nosy Be. Above, view of Nosy Be. Below, embroidered tablecloths in a village of Nosy Be. Devono fermarsi”. FLYREADERS Also the Bench of the Beaver, 8 nautical miles west of the Big Mitsio, is worth a visit. The Radama archipelago. South of Nosy Be there are four island: Nosy Kalakajoro, Nosy Ovy, Nosy Antany Mora and Nosy Valhia. The scenery can be defined as “wild”: little known beaches and fishermen’s villages, hospitable people who are happy to welcome visitors, small bungalow lodges along the beach. Tonga soa! (Welcome!) But there it is, the biggest and most famous island, Nosy Be: thanks to its airport, it is the popular face of Madagascar. In Malagasy it is also called “scented island”, because on its lands people cultivate coffee, cocoa, vanilla, cinnamon and the Ylang Ylang, the flower that produce the homonymous essential oil used in aromatherapy. The 28 kilometre-long road connecting Hell Ville (the capital) and the beautiful beach of Andilana (up north) lead to the most interesting spots: “The sacred tree”, a huge ficus bengalensis whose branches and aerial roots form a cathedral with a diameter of more than 50 metres, the Ampasindava waterfalls, the typical village of Ambatoloaka, where Nosy Be’s nightlife is concentrated: restaurants, hotels, the casino, discos, shops, diving centres and boat rentals. Like in any tourist resort, every night a different club is more popular than the others, while food stands go on cooking chicken and fish kebabs all night long. STOP DEFORESTATION In spite of the positive assumptions and the country’s unchallenged natural resources, in 2009 Madagascar went through the dramatic collapse of its tourist industry. Joel Randriamandranto, the minister for Tourism, spoke about 116 million dollars proceeds against 302 million dollars in 2008. In the long run, because of its reputation as an emerging ecotourism destination, the worst damage might be caused by the rampant deforestation involving forests of trees that are much sought after by the wood industry and by the illegal hunting of wild animals. I mercatini artigianali espongono manufatti in paglia, legno, madreperla e rari fossili, pietre semipreziose. MADAGASCAR/MADAGASCAR FLYREADERS A SUCCESSFUL CARTOON ANTANANARIVO, THE ECHO OF INDONESIAN QUEENS The capital of Madagascar is Antananarivo, more known as “Tana”. It is surrounded by rice fields. The city is going to host the parliamentary elections from May 19th to 24th, according to an agreement of the political parties at the beginning of February that the Cabinet has yet to confirm. Tana’s life takes place on the river’s banks, on twelve hills where houses with different architectural styles are scattered. Besides, Tana keeps a very strong agricultural footprint. The town is at about 1,200 metres above the sea level. It enjoys a temperate climate that fluctuates between 15°C and 25°C degrees. From June to September it is colder at night. The Rova sacred hill, which dominates the city, hosts the palaces of the Merina queens, the dynasty of Indonesian origin that settled on the central plateaus in ancient ages, spreading the oriental physical features and culture. The ethnic groups living together in the country are 18. Arts and crafts markets sell straw, wood, mother-of-pearl handiwork, rare fossils and semiprecious stones. The most interesting excursions take from Antananarivo to the region of the Merina populations until Ambohimanga, a walled citadel 21 kilometres from the capital. In ancient times it was the monarchs’ summer residence, while now it is a holy place because of a shrine dedicated to Antainimpoinimerina, the first legendary king. You can’t miss the Perinet wildlife reserve, which deserves at least a two-three day visit. Crossing the central plateaus until the eastern forest, you will be able to admire the Mandraka waterfalls and the Indonesian villages with their typical tombs. The reserve boasts several species of chameleons, lemurs and orchids. Madagascar is also famous for the presence of seven different species of baobabs, thousand-year trees growing in arid areas that can be even 20 metre high and 9 metre wide. (P.B.) If we acknowledge that the cinema industry has an influence on the destinations’ charm and that there are specific film commissions to attract television and movie productions to some countries, it comes as no surprise that Madagascar owes some of its fame to an “animated cartoon”. This happened back in the year 2005 with “Madagascar”. Three years later the sequel was obviously released, considering that the first movie was the season’s most seen in Italy (and it is a animated feature-length film!). The story begins at the Central Park Zoo in New York City, where a group of rather crazy animals spend their days on display for visitors in exchange for food. They are a lion, a zebra, a hippo and a giraffe. Alex, the “king” of this urban forest, turns on the lights of his “area” by tapping his paws. Some of the zoo’s psychotic penguins are trying to escape and they influence also the zebra and her friends. After running into the many risks of the Yankee civilisation around the Big Apple, the animals are shipped by sea to Kenya but, because of some adversity, they end up in the island of Madagascar. Shifting from the pampered life of the big city to the new food habits is a big shock and the group turns out to be a great “exemplification” of human behaviours – despite the animal appearance – triggered by this fateful change. DreamWorks, the film studio that developed also Shrek and Shark Tale, followed its great tradition and managed to turn this story into a situation comedy. The creative staff of its San Francisco headquarters worked on the making of this project for three years and chose Madagascar as its setting after thorough research in order to depict faithfully animals and plants like the funny baobabs, the island’s national tree that easily fitted in the cartoon style. Of course also special effects have played a key role. As a matter of fact, “Madagascar” stands out for the massive presence of water, fire, sand and animal coats. Water, with its sprinklings and the sea backwash, achieves a realistic effect. The same thing can be claimed about fire. Cinema experts point out that an amazing job was done with sand, considering the many scenes shot on the beach. The tailors who were responsible for the furs were very busy as well, checking all the animals’ coats. According to the movie’s production, it was the first time that DreamWorks shot crowd scenes involving such a big number of moving actors and extras. Lemurs, revealed some tailors, were no less than 1,100! DreamWorks’ geniuses: behind the (virtual) camera there is Eric Darnell, the director of “Gas Planet” (1992) and “Antz” (1998), together with Tom McGraph, who was making his début. Among the writers there are the authors of “Fox Busters” (2000), while the chief executive of DreamWorks Animation is Jeffrey Katzenberg, who was fired by the former Disney chief Michael Eisner some years before. Particolarmente curati gli interni e la tecnologia di viaggio. www.mini.com - 02 516 101 11 www.citroen.it - 02 39 761 tsavo national Park COnSerVaTiOn area KiLimanJarO naTiOnaL parK Kenya Mashariki Camp Voi - Tsavo aRUSHa maLinDi Twiga Beach Resort Watamu aIRpoRt TaranGire tanzania Kivulini Beach Resort Mayungu MyBlue Hotel Nungwi waTamU mombasa nUnGwi naTiOnaL parK Diani pemba Coral Reef Resort Pwani Mchangani KiwenGwa SaaDani Game reSerVe Tanzania zanzibar rUaHa naTiOnaL parK Zanzibar zanzibar UrOa Palumbo Reef Resort Uroa Marumbi Beach Resort Uroa STOne TOwn miKUmi naTiOnaL parK bweJUU mafia SeLOUS www.mini.com - 02 516 101 11 From time immemorial, Citroen has been a synonym of comfort, as well as safety. In spite of its size (it is 486 centimetre long) and its 177 horsepower, fuel consumption is very low. On urban roads we have consumed around one litre each 10 kilometres, while in the other environments around 13 kilometres per litre. The standard equipment is excellent, as well as the price, 37,600 Euros, automatic drive included. A price much lower than other German competitors, nothing to regret when driving your C5. The Mini Cooper D, that Flyreaders has tested for you, is a very good example of this tradition, matched with low fuel consumption. The 1.6-litre turbo-diesel engine, which develops a peak output of 80 kW/110 hp, combines a sports soul with an extraordinary agility and a perfect efficiency. When you check the fuel consumption per kilometre on the on-board computer, you will be surprised: in spite of the car’s horsepower, on urban roads we have never gone under 15 kilometre per litre, while in the other environments the average consumption is 17,3 kilometre per litre. This attribute makes of the Mini Cooper D the cheapest Mini ever. The finishing is very good and the accessories’ level is high. Quindi qualche piccolo accorgimento strategico: arrivate per tempo e mai all’ultimo momento in aeroporto. (P.B.) FLYING WITH CHILDREN According to a recent survey, the biggest annoyance for flyers is putting up with the kicks on one’s own seat back. In the second place there are the legs of the near passengers stretching out too much and in the third place… parents who don’t look after their children. Here they are, the little pests who keep asking the same question: “How long before we arrive?”. There is even a website, www.quantomanca.com, that gives many tips not to get exasperated when travelling with the youngest kids. It is a well-known fact that they have different needs compared to us, so it is better to be aware of it instead of losing one’s patience and the opportunity of educating them. The website also suggests some simple strategic expedients: get to the airport on time, never at the last moment. If you arrive well in advance, you will save yourself a lot of stress in any case. When you reach the airport, let the children play and get them ready for the flight by gradually guiding them to quieter games and meeker behaviours. Of course before boarding it is recommended to go to the toilet. During the flight children get hungry very soon: let them eat first, then one more game. Coloured pencils and papers for the youngest, books, travel board games for grown-up kids. Consoles and videogames should be left for the final hours of flight. As long as the interaction with the parents lasts, try to favour it. Be active, don’t waste all these hours! Teach them to breathe well, to pronounce that letter that doesn’t come out right, tell them about the country you are going to visit, what you are going to see, what will the children be like over there. Make up a dream on the place you are reaching. Tell them about the importance of nature, which often is the main resource of several countries. Their ears: during the take-off and the landing, protect your kids’s ears, for example by giving them something to suck, a bottle, a dummy or a candy... this is not for the dentists’ children. The main thing is that they swallow. Another way to ease the pressure on their eardrums is to put a warm napkin on their ear. (P. B.)
