Spotlight on the wines of Poggio
Argentiera
(Maremma, Toscana)
Maremma is famous for Super Tuscans such as Sassicaia and
Ornellaia but we would like to draw your attention to the less
exalted wines from around Scansano in the south from the winery
Poggio Argentiera.
Morellino di Scansano received it’s DOC status in 1978 and this
was upgraded to DOCG from the 2007 vintage. This red wine
must be made from a minimum of 85% Sangiovese. The area has a
more maritime influence than that of Chianti and some say this
produces softer, rounder tannins.
For his ‘Bellamarsilia’ Gianpaolo Paglia blends 85% Sangiovese
grapes from his younger vines with 15% Ciliegolo to produce an
easy drinking red whereas he uses his older Sangiovese vines for
the more concentrated and longer lasting ‘Capatosta’. This is a
blend of 85% Sangiovese with 10% Ciliegolo and 5% Alicante

Gianpaolo also makes a sweeter red from 100% Alicante grapes
