The upper plain and the slopes of the Rocca man since the Eneolithic and the Bronze Age, town of Entella, which flourished from the period, and again in the Middle Ages till the d‛Entella have seen the presence of and show clear traces of the ancient Archaic Age to the early Imperial forced abandonment of it in 1246. Santuary outside the city walls Not far from the north-west gate (contrada Petraro), along the ancient road coming from the Belice valley and below the walls, a great votive deposit connected to Demeter‛s cult was found. The abundant votive objects and the pottery indicate that the sanctuary — a thesmophorion, a sanctuary for chthonian goddesses — was in use from the end of 6th to the 3rd century BC Palazzo fortificato medievale ed edifici ellenistico-romani Sul margine Sud del pianoro si erge l‛imponente mole quadrangolare del castello medievale (ultimo quarto del XII-metà del XIII secolo), con torrione e rampa di accesso e pianta articolata intorno a due spazi aperti. C.). Medieval fortified palace and Hellenistic-Roman buildings On the south edge of the upper plain the imposing rectangular structure of the medieval castle (last quarter of 12th - first half of 13th century) rises: Its plan develops around two courtyards, with a tower controlling the access ramp. A peculiar feature is the hammam (steam bath) opening on the inner courtyard. The whole building recalls architecture of Northern Africa. On the south, along the modern path, a Hellenistic building (4th-3rd century BC) was destroyed by a fire, possibly contemporarily to the fire at the Hellenistic granary. Under the ruins many findings were recovered, among which small vases for votive use. Immediately uphill the remains of a building still inhabited in the Roman period (1st century BC) came to light. The city walls A 2800 m. long wall circuit protected the north slope, easily accessible from the valley and from the Belice Sinistro River (ancient Krimisos); on the south, east and west sides the rocky cliffs provided a natural defence, in some places increased by man-made walls. At the ends of both valleys forming the Rocca d‛Entella high ground, two gates gave access to the town from the main roads leading to Entella. The path running along the slopes of Cozzo Petraro still reaches the north-west gate, the most fully investigated and fully brought to light. The road on the north-east slope entering the main public area (agora) of the town is less traceable. The central area of the ancient town In the east valley imposing remains of public buildings can be seen: They consist of a temple without peristasis (i.e. without columns around: oikos) with an internal altar, dating to the first decades of the 5th century BC, and of a granary built at the end of the 4th century BC and destroyed by a fire around the middle of the 3rd century BC. Both buildings were sustained by monumental walls and faced the east side of the agora (the public square). Excavations concerned also a votive deposition in the granary foundation, containing small statues typical of the Demeter cult, and the quarry where gypsum blocks for these buildings had been quarried. Area Necropoli A 'Pizzo della Regina' L‛occupazione e frequentazione antroThe 'Pizzo della Regina', the highest point of the Rocca (m pica dell‛ampia terrazza sotto l‛angolo 557 a.s.l.), shows the remains of a medieval castle documented since the 16th century, drawn and described Sud della Rocca risalgono alla fine in 1858 by the Frenchman François Sabatier in a letter to Michele Amari. A water tank covered by a vault dell‛Eneolitico e all‛età del Bronzo in large stone blocks can still be seen. This stronghold on the south-east corner completed the medieval (cultura di Thapsos). Dall‛età arcaica fortified system that consisted of the city walls, of the fortified Palace (south edge) and of another castle — ma soprattutto tra il IV e il I on the Cozzo Petraro (north corner). sec. a.C. Necropolis A area The wide terrace below the south corner of the Rocca was frequented by man and inhabited since the Eneolithic and the Bronze Age (‘Thapsos culture‛). Since the Archaic Age — mainly from the 4th to the 1st cent. BC — this external area was used for burials, as in the Middle Ages, after more than 1000 years of abandonment of the town, when Islamic tombs overlay the area of the ancient necropolis. In the late Archaic Age manifacturing took place here, such as ceramic production and the quarrying of gypsum building stones.
