Premiata nel 2011 con il prestigioso Hasselblad International Award in Photography, alla
Biennale di Venezia del 2007 Sophie Calle ha emozionato il pubblico con l'installazione Take
Care of Yourself, con protagoniste 107 donne (tra loro Laurie Anderson, Jeanne Moreau e
Luciana Littizzetto) che hanno letto e interpretato la lettera di addio ricevuta dall'artista tramite
email dal suo amato. La missiva elettronica si chiudeva con la frase che ha dato il titolo
all'opera. Questa vicenda personale di abbandono e di dolore è diventata un libro e una
mostra itinerante, che ha viaggiato per il mondo raggiungendo di recente Lo Stavanger Art
Museum in Norvegia.
Per la realizzazione di questo ritratto (che fa parte di una collana di documentari intitolata
Empreintes), l'intrigante artista francese ha usato nuovamente la formula della lettera, per
invitare la regista a seguire alcune regole - come in un gioco - permettendole di accedere alla
sua casa, ai suoi archivi e al suo computer personale, per trovare le tracce di vita e di lavoro
con cui comporre il racconto filmato della sua storia. Il documentario si apre e si chiude con le
immagini di un cimitero della California. In questo scenario, legato alla nascita di alcune delle
sue prime opere fotografiche, seguiamo Calle predisporre il suo ultimo rituale. “The happy
things, I just live them” - dichiara la stessa nel film - “The sad ones, I use.”

Sophie Calle won the prestigious Hasselblad International Award in Photography, in 2011. At the
Venice Biennale, in 2007, she excited the public with her installation Take care of yourself, with
107 women protagonists (including Laurie Anderson, Jeanne Moreau and Luciana Littizzetto) who
read and interpreted the goodbye letter the artist received via email from her boyfriend. The
electronic missive ended with the phrase which became the piece’s title. This personal episode of
abandonment and pain became a book and a traveling show, which circled the globe, and was
most recently installed at the Stavanger Art Museum in Norway.
To produce this portrait (part of a documentary series titled Empreintes), the intriguing French
artist used the letter form again, inviting the director to follow certain rules - as in a game - and
allowing access to her house, archives and personal computer in order to find traces of life and
work with which to compose a film history. The documentary opens and closes with images of a
cemetery in California. In this scenario, linked to the creation of some her first photographic
works, we follow Calle as she prepares her own final ritual. “The happy things, I just live them” she declares in the film - “The sad ones, I use.”
