In Polonia ho iniziato a sentirmi a casa. “I he Poles didn’t die right away, but kneeling down at the last traffic lights, they re-did the make-up for the regime’s whores, thrown toward the sea…” This is how De André in Anime Salve photographs the collective imagination that Italy had of Polish people at the end of the ‘80s. A big bus from before the war for religious tourism that is awkward and desperate, a skiing Pope and an electrician President who defend them. Wojtyla and Walesa. Two of the greatest men of the second half of the Twentieth Century. But Poland is still for me the black and white photograph that De André took. For me, it was the other side of the wall. Why it ended up there didn’t matter to me. Poland had never interested me. Then starting in 2000 I began, thanks to a great scholar like Pietro Marchesani, to get closer to Polish theatre. I passed months in Poznan, at the Nowy Teatr to created two of my shows: Sei Personaggi in cerca d’Autore by Pirandello and Goldoni’s Raggi- “T Sergio Maifredi Regista e presidente del Circuito Teatri Possibili, vicedirettore del Teatro della Tosse di Genova fino al 2007, Sergio Maifredi lavora al Nowy Teatr di Poznan (Polonia) dal 2006. Below, from “Oltre il Muro”. Polonia 1989-2009. Mi vergogno, non ne so niente. Torno in Italia, leggo, chiedo. In Poland I started feeling like I was at home. And not understanding why I felt so good there. Right away I discovered Polish graphic arts and I followed their secret. How was it possible that there they had developed such a specific art, the art of the poster? Why was it that there the poster was not the slave of the laws of the market? The regime had involuntarily created a space of freedom for artists. Instituted the “mandatory theatre” – theatre had to educate the populace, it was open to every social class and therefore constantly sold out without the need of pursuing the audience. The poster no longer had a commercial aim but only an artistic mission: to seal the work of a director, an author, a group of actors. And so the poster was free. The artist was free. I thought that it would be interesting to tell the story of my Poland through this art form and thus the show that is open at Palazzo Ducale in Genoa until August 30th was created: Beyond the Wall. Theatre in a Poster. Poland 1989-2009. I asked Danièle Sulewic to do it because she is an artist, a Polish artist, born in Paris, who lived in Italy, who sums up the entire history of central Europe in herself, through migrations, invasions and diasporas. The short circuit of love between me and Poland happens in Warsaw: when I see a book on Monte Cassino. I am curious and ask my Polish friends: Monte Cassino? For us it is one of our national heroic feats! Don’t you know General Anders? I am ashamed, but I don’t know anything. I go back to Italy, read, ask. I am moved, and want to salute the Polish flag with gratitude. General Anders, commanding the II Polish Army Corps freed Monte Cassino, leaving over 3800 men on the field. Immediately after, they liberate Ancona and Bologna. He dies in 1970 and is buried at Monte Cassino, next to his men. Maybe it would be enough to know some history to cancel that sad photo of Poland in black and white. Our work as traveling artists is also this: to encounter the art of a people that tells the story of that people and eliminates distance. b Alla scoperta del mondo Costa Edutainment Il successo del sistema Edutainment: Genova al 1° posto per l’offerta di musei non tradizionali L’edutainment si conferma un sistema di successo nel panorama dell’offerta culturale italiana. Edutainment is a successful system in the panorama of the Italian cultural offering. This is what emerges from the 2009 Museum Dossier of the Touring Club Italiano. In the Dossier, the Genoa Aquarium in 2008 is in first place among scientific museums and in 6th place among the thirty most visited structures in Italy. This study underscores the success of the science center that is located in Genoa, made up of the Genoa Aquarium, the Children’s Museum and the Galata Museum of the Sea, and that makes Genoa the number one city for the offering of non-traditional museums. This center is the result of an integrated system built by Costa Edutainment among its managed structures. In addition to the Aquarium, there is the Children’s Museum, and the Galata Museum of the Sea, that were inserted for the first time in the Dossier, thanks to this system, as well as the Biosphere and the Bigo.
