The Genoa company Slam, an international leader in sportswear, renews clothes for every day. And it will participate in America’s Cup with its new waterproof jackets utto perché erano stufi di bagnarsi. Genova, dicembre 1979. Per loro T ll because they were tired of getting wet. Genoa, December 1979. A group of friends, twenty-five years old, decides that it is time to find a solution: in regattas, they were getting soaked. That’s how they founded SLAM, a company that thirty years later is a leader in sportswear, worldwide. I primi esperimenti tecnici vengono compiuti durante le regate estreme: per prima Slam usa un tessuto come il Meryl, And an official sponsor of BMW Oracle, the main challenge to Alinghi, at the next America’s Cup. For the Cup, Slam has created a series of waterproof jackets in a stretch material that is new, and that completely allows for freedom of movement. Blue, gray, and red, the colors of the BMW Oracle. “It all started with the jackets, then the real jump which we made in ’90, when we became an official sponsor of the Italian Sailing Foundation, a role that we still have today,” explains Carla Gardino, President of Slam and a “Commendatore” of the Italian Republic. In 1994, the first store – a marvelous corner of Liguria, in Portovenere; in 1996, production of shoes begins and three years later, the women’s line. Slam banks its future on innovation: by now collaboration with important research institutions like the Milan and Turin Polytechnic institutes are normal – to surpass new technological frontiers in textiles. “We have an office in Milan, but our headquarters has always been and will continue to be Genoa: it’s the sea, the old sailing ships that inspire us,” says Gardino. The average age of the 173 employees is 35 years old. “We rely heavily on young researchers, their ideas are more innovative,” explains the president, who reveals that 70% of the employees are women. “Because women are more curious.” The first technical experiments are done during the extreme regattas: Slam was the first to use a fabric like Meryl that contains ionized silver fibers that have a useful anti-bacterial effect. For that group of friends, thirty years ago, going from regattas to the clothing industry was a natural step: “The regattas are like the Formula One,” Gardino explains, “if an article worked well in the competitions, just imagine as everyday wear.” With 1,470,000 articles of clothing sold a year (2008 statistics), 30 stores in Italy and 25 throughout the world, the global crisis has only had a small effect on the company. “We haven’t closed any stores, and we’re keeping our sales up. Certainly 2009 will be a year to hold steady, but we hope to pick up again and grow, especially after America’s Cup,” president Gardino is sure. And Slam has just opened a new outlet in Bologna. They were the first to introduce che contiene nelle fibre argento ionizzato dall’efficace effetto antibatterico. Una serie di ‘seamless’ underwear in 2003, that is, the total absence of seams. Then it was thermowelding of fabric, the laser cut of fabric (like with sails), laminated zippers. With the Milan Polytechnic, there is an avant-garde study underway for a material that is still top-secret and it will be presented as a first at the next Genoa Boat Show in October. For the last Olympics in Beijing, Slam (in collaboration with the Department of Science of Materials and Chemical Engineering of the Turin Polytechnic and the Research & Development Laboratory for new textile materials Latt in Biella) created “Area 51,” a special Tshirt. Five fabrics placed on top of one another furnish specific benefits for various body parts: transpiration, thermo-regulatory, ergonomic, anti-abrasive and anti-bacterial. At the end of 2008, Slam launched a new line dedicated to golf. “It’s a sport that is like sailing, you do it outdoors, it’s ecological, it is widespread,” Gardino explains. Here too, technological materials are avant-garde: Meryl is 31 Lo skipper Russell Coutts e l'equipaggio di Bmw Oracle Racing vestiti dall'azienda genovese Bmw Oracle Racing skipper Russell Coutts with his Crew, outfitted by the Genoa company 32 blue news Il pilota tedesco Michael Schumacher German F-1 pilot Michael Schumacher polo, invece, è stata realizzata in “sensitive”, uno speciale tessuto che protegge la pelle dai raggi UV. «Il nuovo materiale che sarà presentato al Salone Nautico e poi – sorride Gardino – fare come il vento, non fermarsi mai». b all the rage, in addition to being refreshing and transpiring, it has the excellent quality of being stain resistant. A series of polo shirts was done in “sensitive,” a special fabric that protects the skin from ultraviolet rays. For the summer, Slam is launching “Fruit Polo, Limited Edition,” perfumed T-shirts (orange, yellow, green, red) that have the pioneering capacity of hydrating the skin. There are micro-capsules in the fabric that slowly release Monoi oil (an extract of the Tiaré flower) and passion fruit oil onto the skin, that has an anti-inflammatory effect, and the benefit should be good until the fifth or sixth washing. Another innovation are pockets in “awex” for the articles in the “Miami” series, launched for the springsummer 2009 collection. The special fabric protects from the harmful waves of cell phones. While the jackets of the same line were created with a “shape memory” material, formed by metal alloys that have the property of remembering their original shape even after having been folded, crushed, and beaten up. Challenges for the future? “A new material will be presented at the Boat Show and then,” Gardino smiles, “like the wind, we will never stop.” b Capi da Formula Uno Formula One Clothing Cosa hanno a che fare i mostri sacri della Formula 1 Ayrton Senna e Michael Schumacher con Ronco Scrivia?
