Testo inglese Professor Nicola Palazzolo is professor of History of Roman Law at the University of Perugia, and was previously at the Universities of Messina and Catania. He is the director of the CNR "Istituto di Teoria e Tecniche dell'Informazione Giuridica" (Institute of Legal Information Theory and Techniques). At the moment, he lectures at the University of Law of Catania on Legal Informatics. He is the founder of the "Gruppo di ricerca per l'informatica giuridica" (Research group for the Legal Informatics), which he has also directed from 1984 to 1992. The research group has its base in the Juridical Seminary of the University of Catania. He has devised an I.T. product for the automatic indexing of the quoted sources in the Roman literature (the INFOR). He has promoted, in Catania, the establishment of the "Centro interuniversitario per l'Informatica Romanistica" (the CIR Inter-university Centre for Roman Computer Science) and also of the "Tecnologie Informatiche e Multimediali Applicate al Diritto" (TIMAD - Information and Multimedial Technologies Applied to Law) research centre of Catania University. Professor Palazzolo at the moment directs the CIR, to which the University of Catania, Catanzaro, Messina and Perugia belong. The CIR has produced much software in the juridical historical field. The most relevant one is the CD-ROM "Bibliotheca Iuris Antiqui", an integrated informative system about ancient laws, to which has recently been added the multimedial work "BDRom", an electronic edition of the main Roman literature from 1840 to 1930, whose first CD-ROM, that deals with the tracts and manuals of Roman public law, has recently been published. Both works are under the scientific direction of N. Palazzolo. 7 - Pubblicazioni scientifiche più significative del Coordinatore Scientifico 1. PALAZZOLO N. (2007). Testo inglese This Project will make it possible to realise a digital on-line library for the historicaljuridical community, based on a specialist digital collection, which has today become the most widespread instrument of information among scholars of Roman and ancient law (BIA), enriched with the particular services typical of on-line dissemination. The digital library will provide more functions than a traditional library or a digital collection on CDROM, such as the possibility to implement an interface for advanced services, searches in connected resources, virtual spaces for users and other customised functions. After the initial phase in which specialists in the various disciplines and scholars of Roman law will work in close contact with each other in selecting and structuring the digital collection, the project will be articulated in two sub-groups: the first of these will consist of the preparation of a philologically correct digital edition of the sources and in the integration of the reference bibliography; the second will deal with the analysis of the search functions and implementation of the specialist search engine. 10 - Parole chiave nº Parola chiave (in italiano) 1. Testo inglese The project starts from the experience acquired over the years and the success among specialists of the two products of the activity of the research group that promoted the project (Bibliotheca Iuris Antqui). The integrated information system on ancient law – CDROM, Second edition, Catania, 2002; BD-Rom, Electronic archives of romanistic literature. CD-ROM Vol. I, Catania 2004; Vol. II, Catania 2006) the research group again proposes to make the entire scientific romanistic patrimony accessible on line, with the well-known difficulties in updating that this type of support involves. The material has already been digitalised and has heretofore been accessible only on CD-ROM. It is a well-known fact that Bibliotheca Iuris Antiqui has a dual limit: a) on one hand the fact that the work of philological of the source text, which requires great accuracy and precision, obviously proceeds very slowly and is not sufficient to provide scholars with a complete patrimony of information equal to the one provided by the best hard copy editions: even the “restored” sources still lack the entire critical apparatus (notes, hypotheses of reconstruction, manuscript variants) which is irremissible today for any serious scholar; additionally, the attempts to memorise the critical apparatus of the Digest and Code, in the form of images of the relative pages, and then to connect them with hypermedia technologies to the digital text, have not produced great results, especially considering that such an apparatus would occupy an enormous memory, incompatible with the capacity of present-day CD-ROMs; b) on the other hand, the fact that the bibliographical updating would have to be performed very rapidly in order to be truly effective (at least annually), which is not compatible with the time necessary to produce a new CD ROM in its complete updated form and with all of its parts. Additionally, the possibility today of having the electronic text of more recent writings, of articles published by the same authors, would require the entry – where possible – in the OPERA archive of the entire text of the articles of doctrine, which is still impossible due to the size of the current CD-ROMs. For these reasons, the research group considered it opportune to start a process that may lead to the placement on line of the entire body of the works produced (the three BIA archives, as well as the more recent BD-Rom), pursuing the interoperability of the data, through the adoption of standard formats and the availability of advanced access to resources, through the use of open (non-proprietary) information technology protocols for on-line searches. Additionally, the availability of the on-line archives will make it possible to implement advanced functions, such as the integration with search engines and digital resource registries, for an advancement of the instruments made available to researchers. This will be possible with the involvement of new competencies, which are necessary for the realisation of this undertaking. Testo inglese The applications of information technology with respect to Roman law have been very meaningful and variegated in recent years, especially in Italy, and have favoured important renewal of the auxiliary means of romanistic investigation, both where access to the bibliographical information is concerned, as well as the procurement of ancient sources relative to a specific subject. Concerning the source texts, scholars may avail themselves today of a variety of information systems, where the entire text of the sources of knowledge are stored (direct and indirect, technical and atechnical). In these cases we commonly speak of “full-text” archives. Concerning the bibliography, on the other hand, we are almost always dealing with reference databases, in which the entire text of the bibliographical works cannot be found, but only the bibliographic details (author, title, year, publishing house and number of pages). Frequently a brief summary of the work (abstract) is included, or the summary, when dealing with monographic works or collections of writings. Only in sporadic cases and generally only for the most ancient works, which are still consulted frequently, the entire edition of several important works have recently begun to be digitalised, generally as stereotype images and more rarely in full text files. Finally, effective and advanced research instruments have been perfected, both from the point of view of information technology and the documentary point of view, for the retrieval of sources and the bibliography. These considerations are valid first of all for what is probably the most important and widespread bibliographical text archive for the study of Roman Law, namely the 2000 edition of the Bibliotheca Iuris Antiqui (BIA). With its three integrated archives (FONTES, OPERA, THESAURUS) it permits Romanists not only to gain rapid and complete access to the complex of ancient juridical resources and to the entire bibliography related to it, but also the possibility – through an opportune cross referencing of data – to carry our targeted research on individual aspects and specific subjects. More in particular, the juridical sources archive (FONTES) is an electronic text, adequately structured in fields, which facilitates the retrieval of information through various search keys managed by an efficient information retrieval program. It is a documentary fund of considerable size (approximately 14 million characters), containing most of the Roman juridical sources of manuscript tradition, which was acquired and transferred into the information retrieval program utilised for the BIA. For the second edition of the BIA (2002), a thorough activity of “philological restoration” was initiated, which led to the complete revision of the electronic text of the Justinian Digest, which has now been made to conform with the editio minor by Mommsen-Krüger (more precisely, the editio stereotypa XII, Berolini 1911). The work of restoration continued with the complete revision of the Justinian Code, which was harmonised with the stereotypa X edition, Berolini 1929, by Paul Krüger, with the “philological restoration” of the juridical sources of epigraphic and papyrological origin taken from the first volume of the FIRA, which were already present in the Fontes archive of the BIA; and with the acquisition of the Justinian Novellae collection, which was found in an older electronic format dating from the Seventies and was converted, following philological restoration, to a format compatible with new information retrieval programs. Concerning another aspect, the connected research units provided for the digitalisation of a large number of juridical sources on epigraphic supports (largely published in the more well-known FIRA collection of vol. 1, although much of it is quite dated). Concerning the bibliography, the “OPERA” archive of the Bibliotheca Iuris Antiqui (BIA) is again the most recent and largest bibliographical data bank realised to date. It is a reference database that contains bibliographical references to over 40,000 works, including monographies, collections of writings, magazines and articles dealing with Roman and ancient law, partially taken from specialised bibliographical collections and largely memorised manually. The 2000 edition covers the period from 1940 to 1998. The monographic volumes, collections of writings and yearly collections of the most important magazines in the sector, contained in the bibliographical archive, generally show a complete summary. For the articles, on the other hand, an abstract is shown, when it was already included in the original source. The bibliographical description of the document is set forth according to the criteria used in current bibliographical collections. For writings contained in collections or periodicals, the title of the collection or periodical is identified in abbreviated form, if not actually encoded. The description of the work is set forth in the original language of the individual documents. In the case of languages that have characters other than the Latin ones, the relative words are transliterated with Latin characters. On another level, but again in relation to the historical-juridical scientific production, there are the realisations that are not limited to providing the bibliographical details of each work noted, but which contain the entire text in digital form. Among the most meaningful initiatives in this direction is the one begun in 1998, again by the BIA research group, of re-publishing of the most important works of romanistic literature in a facsimile digitalised version on CD-Rom (BD-Rom – Romanistic Digital Library). The first CD-ROM, published in 2004, contains the most important manuals and treatises on Roman public law published between 1839 and 190, for a total of about 16,000 pages in facsimile format. The second CD-ROM, which was published during the last few months, contains the manuals and general studies on the sources. A series of additional functions were set up by the research group that created the project, making the work quite different from other similar initiatives. There are two particularly innovative instruments: a) the full text indexes of the individual works, which can therefore be consulted word by word and indexed through one or more describers per subject and one or more classification codes; b) the examination cards, which contain the index of the sources cited on each page. Finally the Thesaurus, built especially for the BIA, is the instrument that permits the two archives of the sources and literature to interact, enormously increasing the potential for research. This is a documentary instrument of considerably wide-scope, which contains the conceptual scheme that the classification codes are based on, relative to the various subjects of Roman and ancient law and, within this framework, the verbal describers (about 8,000 Latin or Latinised terms) for the purpose of searches by subject. Additionally, the mass digitalisation programs, especially those started by the European Union and the Open Access institutional deposits have made a quantity of sources and reference works available, which it is useful to integrate with the BIA archive, to valorise the data collected and utilise the existing resources to the best possible advantage. Testo inglese In identifying the functions it will be opportune to provide with the service for on-line access to the information on Roman and ancient law through an Internet node, it will be necessary to bear in mind the following preliminary considerations: a) the most important characteristics of the documentation available; b) the specificity of the information needs and therefore the different profiles of the final users (scholars of ancient law, positive jurists, students, etc.). Definitely, not a few problems are encountered by the organisers of the digital historicaljuridical library. Concerning the archives of the sources, the first one was the choice of the texts to be memorised; the second was to determine suitable describers, which could permit retrieval even beyond the words of the text; the third was memorisation of all the other data relative to the text, which make it a competitive electronic instrument, in terms of retrieval time and updates with the normal printing instruments that we are accustomed to using. Actually, everything depends on the nature of the document itself and on its particular history; like any historical text, they have sometimes come from a manuscript tradition of many centuries and then from many printed editions. The foregoing situation makes it necessary to develop a form of memorisation that not only has an accepted critical edition as its basis, because it is philologically more correct, but which also contains the entire critical apparatus upon which the edition is founded: therefore we cannot forego having a punctual indication of all of the variants, namely of any different form than that recorded in the reference text, “weighing” the scientific level of what is added to the text, of course, to avoid having a mass of data that would be concretely unusable. The information technology instrument therefore seems to be an elective instrument, even for the realisation of new, more updated critical editions. It should also be born in mind that the transcription on electronic supports of a text, especially if it is particularly voluminous, always involves the need to develop the structure of the document, through a specific Document Type Definition (DTD), which includes a series of additional elements concerning the physical structure (volume, page, line) and the conceptual structure (books, chapters, paragraphs, fragments) of the text. A work of encoding is therefore necessary, which provides all of the indications relative to the structure of the text, in a codified manner. The Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) is one of the various systems of codification being asserted in the humanistic field, particularly for the management of Greek and Latin texts, which utilises the international Standard Generalised Markup Language (SGML); but this has also been superseded today by new systems based on the more recent eXtensible Markup Language (XML). Actually, at this time, many groups performing research and experimentation on the memorisation of ancient sources dedicate themselves to the analysis of basic problems relative to the preparation of the text and the use of text encoding standards, to achieve satisfactory treatment of the materials. Unfortunately, it must be stressed that the editions of literary and epigraphicalpapyrological resources, as well as those of juridical resources are still quite far away from adopting markup standards that permit the separation of the text from the reference program, making it available for “re-use” in a different environment. This is definitely an urgent need, at a time when the reference programs and platforms change very quickly. Text data (namely the electronic text) must constitute a permanent patrimony, while the rest (interrogation and processing programs and the environment where the information technology is developed) must be able to change and adapt from time to time to different purposes and technological evolution. The solution proposed here for the resources contained in the FONTES archive of the BIA is to utilise the XML markup language, which is now considered a de facto standard, as well as particular information technology procedures (parser) capable of analysing the documents, recognising the various parts and providing for their codification, according to specific DTD. Clearly, since we are dealing with extremely heterogeneous sources, in terms of structure and consistency, it will be necessary to envision a large number of DTD, to be able to encode the great variety of resources and their internal articulations. This task will therefore require a deep knowledge of the system of ancient resources and their types, and will be entrusted to the most strictly romanistic research units. There is a similar need for on-line bibliographical archives as well, albeit with the opportune adjustments On one hand it will be necessary to convert all of the bibliographical records contained in the OPERA archive of the BIA to the XML markup language and propose one or more DTD that represent the various types of documents in a complete and exhaustive manner (monographies, collections of writings, acts of conventions, magazine articles, etc.). For this purpose it will be necessary, first of all, to verify whether specific experiences have already been realised, in Italy or elsewhere in the world, which might be necessary to take into consideration, at least in the initial phase. From an initial examination, there do not seem to be any DTD experiences of doctrine in the juridical field, and in particular with respect to ancient laws. At most, the specifications that have been developed recently in the library field could be utilised, with the opportune adaptations, especially the ones relative to the Library of Congress of Washington, in order to transform the UNIMARK standards into XML standards, thus permitting the bibliographical data on electronic supports to be more easily accessible and interchangeable in the Internet environment. The DTD of bibliographical works on Roman and ancient law should therefore be exhaustive for the description of the type of doctrinal contribution; it will not be necessary to be exhaustive, however, for all of the information that can be gleaned from the individual types of contributions: the reason for this is that it will be opportune to make a selection of only the important information, for the principle purpose of the project – namely the recovery of bibliographical information via Internet. Nevertheless, with respect to strictly catalogue information, it will be necessary to add one or more blocks relative to the full text in the DTD, with the relative internal articulations (chapters, prefaces, indexes, appendixes). In fact, even if there are no bibliographical contributions distributed on line in the OPERA archive of the BIA at this time, it can be foreseen that it will be possible to implement this type of contribution in future. Placing the entire body of ancient juridical resources contained in the BIA on line will then allow extension of hypermedia techniques, which have only concerned the critical apparatus of the Digest up until now, to another entire series of documents, which could make the digital edition fully competitive, if not even more efficient, with respect to the traditional hard copy editions. This would not only enlarge the experiment to all the other previous sources in the FONTES archive, but – for example – would facilitate the exegetic study of the texts, with the possibilities provided to the user of the data bank to view both the corresponding image of the page where each fragment of the Digest appears, within the palingenetic reconstruction of Lenel, as well as the image from the Littera Florentina. The use of hypermedia techniques can be even more advantageous with respect to the epigraphic and papyrological sources, for which not only the electronic transcription, but also the photographic image of the document in its original state, or its apograph, if still available, can be provided. The access to the material on line must take into account these observations, in the sense that a special user interface must permit both traditional types of research in the source and doctrine archives, as well as hyper textual and hypermedia type navigation within the ambit of the variety of materials offered. Not only the conceptual structure and formal presentation of the user interface will obviously have to be placed into relationship with this functional orientation, but also the characteristics of the instruments subject to planning and which are already largely present in the BIA, such as the classification schemes by subject, the lists of describers and the Theasaurus. Phases of the research I. The digital collection The first phase of the research calls for constant interaction among all the units involved in the initiative, not only through information technology means, but also through a series of seminars and meetings dedicated to the analytical study of the various theoretical and operational problems to be dealt with and solved in order to achieve the goals set by the research. It will be necessary first of all to define the model to pursue and the functions to be provided for, and successively to develop the appropriate DTD, both for the full-text resources of the BIA and for the blibliographical materials in full-text form, but also for the data in the bibliographical archives of the BIA. To this end, since interoperability is a multidimensional element, which integrates technical, semantic, organisational, juridical and cultural aspects, requiring the existence of mixed working groups with different backgrounds, this initial phase of activity will be realised in collaboration among all of the research units and with the involvement of all the professional figures present in the units (experts on the subject and technical collaborators, information technology protocol and standards experts, in addition to the techniques of conservation and management of the collection). As an integral part of this phase, a study will be developed on the possible procedures to follow to ensure the long-term sustainability of the project. From the point of view of the organisation of the service at full regime, it will be necessary, in fact, to plan a project with the resources deemed necessary for the creation and maintenance of the data, even resorting to collaboration with external service structures, such as editor and suppliers of commercial services. Although this part of the project goes beyond the exquisitely scientific part of building the digital collection and beyond the technical part, it is deemed particularly necessary and qualifying for the project, inasmuch as it permits long term continuous accessibility to the digital collection, therefore valorising all the efforts for its realisation. An organisation and technical staff must be foreseen, in fact, that guarantee the active and stable support of the digital library and its accessibility. The study on the sustainability of the digital library and on the possible models for its realisation will be entrusted to an expert on digital libraries. It will also be necessary to adopt a standard metadata scheme, in conformity with the national projects, whose collaboration must be sought to ensure greater visibility (such as the Italian digital library). Finally, it will be necessary to foresee metadata for the conservation and management of rights. From the point of view of the specialists on Roman law, they will have to focus on and resolve several preliminary questions relative to the identification of the texts to be included and integration with the BIA archives. In particular: a) the reference printed edition must be identified, to which the text of each source subject to “philological restoration” will be made to conform. In making this choice, the level of dependability of the printed editions available today will be taken into consideration, as well as how widespread the edition is in the scientific community (this, for example, could induce the Unit to prefer the FIRA edition of the Institutiones di Gaio over the prestigious edition published by David and Nelson); b) for the sources subject to digital transcription for the first time, the “operational protocol” of the BIA will be opportunely adapted, as it contains the general criteria to follow in producing digital editions of individual ancient texts, organising the potential records of a textual database, which will be structured in fields (encoding of the source, inscription, text of the source, etc.) which will correspond to the possible keys of access to the data; c) it will be necessary to provide for the recruitment and training of the collaborators – divided among the various research units – who will provide for the transcription on electronic supports of the text of the sources identified by the research groups. The collaborators – preferably degree holders in Roman law or in classical literature – must demonstrate that they have an adequate knowledge of the ancient languages (Latin and Greek) as well as a good level of knowledge of information technology. II. Upon conclusion of the first phase of identifying the model of digital library to realise, the construction of the DTD and the choice of the metadata scheme, the activities of the various research units will be differentiated according to their different professional competencies Two different areas of research can be identified, which are instrumental to the objective to be achieved in this second phase: a) Identification of the search functions. To ensure the interoperability of the data with national and international projects, the second phase will proceed with conversion in XML format of the existing archives, to offer accessibility in line with the digital collection, the construction (or rather, adaptation) of the search engine and definition of the services to be implemented. The Parma and ITTIG/CNR units will provide for this activity, in particular. The semantic type access may avail itself of search aids that include the thesaurus and the multilingual indexes. Additionally, the possibility to record the research strategy, make hyper-textual connections, transpose parts of the document and make notes to the documents, are advanced functions of the digital library, which may contribute to research, even with possible consequences that are not fully identifiable. It will be the task of the Perugia Unit to revise the semantic instruments currently available to BIA and BD-Rom users. To this end, the possibility will be studied of implementing artificial intelligence applications and web semantics, in order to identify possible future developments. b) Philological restoration and integration of the archives. In this second phase, the units led by the specialists in Roman (Perugia, Catania and Catanzaro) will perfect the body of documents to be included in BIA-Net, proceeding, with respect to the sources, with the perfection of the text data, through collation with the most philologically accredited editions, and with respect to the bibliography, with integration of the BIA archive for the years from 1999-2007. 14 - Ruolo di ciascuna unità operativa in funzione degli obiettivi previsti e relative modalità di integrazione e collaborazione Testo italiano 1. Testo inglese 1. Parma Unit The Parma Unit, which is essentially made up of digital library experts, will play a central role in the research, because it will have the task of defining the most suitable model of digital library for a set of archives of Roman and ancient law, in accordance with the most accredited standards and technology. The vision of service of the BIA-NET is no longer that of an editorial product, as in the previous phases, but is to build a model of on-line digital resources and services, where it is possible for users to interact with the data in order to favour improved sharing of knowledge, thus contributing to the greater productivity of research. 2. Perugia and Catania Units The Perugia and Catania Units will dedicate themselves to completion of the work of digitalisation, in respect of the theoretical criteria established during the first phase. Given the extremely varied nature of the sources to be taken into consideration, the contribution of different types of competencies will be necessary: each of the research units will therefore be called upon to follow the “philological restoration” of a homogeneous group of sources directly, according to a plan for the sharing of tasks developed on the basis of the specific scientific inclinations of the components of each unit. The work of philological restoration will start from the electronic texts in the Fontes archive of the Bibliotheca Iuris Antiqui (BIA) (in the 2000 edition). The individual Fontes records will be exported in Rich Text Format (RTF) to be united in files containing the electronic text of each juridical source. The orthographic and philological revision will be performed on these RTF files; this will be done materially (and manually) by the collaborators recruited during the first phase. In order to simplify the production of the new digital editions of the sources, a dedicated text editor will be utilised (which has already been realised by the BIA research group), capable of supporting the contextual utilisation of Greek and Latin true type fonts and of generating a Rich Text Format (RTF) type text format, perfectly compatible with the data format managed by BIA; that is to say that it will permit easy importation of electronic texts prepared by the research units within the Fontes archive of the BIA, which currently constitutes a valid information technology solution to adequately manage the functions of information retrieval on a documentary base, made up of Greek and Latin texts. 3. Catanzaro Unit The Catanzaro research unit will also provide for the updating of the bibliographical archive (OPERA) with the publications from 1999 to 2008, inclusive, according to the bibliographical standards already utilised in the BIA, but also using appropriate XML and DTD markup languages for the specific bibliographical entities. The unit will also provide for the collation and philological restoration of the most interesting romanistic juridical resources digitalised by the research unit during previous research projects, starting with the FIRA 1 contents, which are not present in the BIA Fontes archive to be passed successively to other epigraphic sources that are not contained in the FIRA collection (consider the epigraphic findings in recent years, which have polarised the attention of the scientific community). 4. CNR Unit The CNR Unit will specifically deal with conversion to the XML language of the text and bibliographical archives of the BIA and BD-Rom, as well as the construction (or rather, the adaptation) of the search engine. It will then be necessary to develop a DTD for each type of document, separating the data from the functions and interface. Testo inglese Understandably, there are high expectations in the romanistic scientific community for the updating and completion of the two works conceived and realised by the research group presenting this project today (BIA and BD-Rom). The success of these products, which are now considered indispensable instruments for access to the sources of bibliographical information, encourages the researchers to consider that even a simple updating and progressive improvement of existing products would be greeted with great enthusiasm. But this is not the research proposed. In fact, the project goes far beyond this objective. It is rather a question of using the most recent experiences in digital libraries and on-line search engines to the best advantage to provoke a leap forward in quality in terms of the experiences realised to date, which even the Romanists who are most attentive to technological innovation are beginning to feel as a necessity that it is important to make a commitment to: namely, to move from the optical support (CD-ROM or DVD) to direct on line access, with all of the advantages in terms of the ease of acquisition and importation of materials, of integration and navigation among different archives, the ease of updating and maintenance of the system. The objective, of course, is quite ambitious, both because new technologies are being applied to an entire complex of data (sources, bibliographies, search instruments) which have heretofore been treated within the ambit of closed proprietary systems, both because this forces them to deal with problems, event theoretical ones, which are absolutely new for Romanists, but also for digital library experts, such as the problems relative to the identification of document type, textual and bibliographical specifications, according to which special Document Type Descriptions (DTD) can be built, which identify the document in question in an unequivocal manner. This part of the research, obviously, goes well beyond the product to be realised (BIANet), because as it occurred for many well-known types of documents: consider the DTD of the legislative acts produced by the project “Norms on-line” of the Ministry of Justice – the DTD of the Roman juridical resources produced within the ambit of this project would become, in the absence of similar initiatives, a de facto standard (but with a great deal of scientific prestige) which would impose among the numerous initiatives even in our studies, of digitalisation of vast documentary patrimonies. Unfortunately, however, these initiatives develop without an adequate theoretical substrate and, moreover, outside of all recognised international standards, thus remaining isolated and unusable by the general body of interested scholars. The possibility of commercial exploitation of the results of the research is also part of the theoretical research, starting from protection of copyrights for electronic commerce. In the opinion of the research group, concerning the sources, it is necessary to separate (and with on-line search technologies this is possible) the consultation of the text of the sources, in a philologically correct and dependable version, which would always be possible to access free of charge, and the utilisation of search instruments on the sources, to obtain concordances, investigations of the lexical elements, or in any case advanced searches, for which it would be possible to envision paid access managed by an external distributor. The same thing could be said for the bibliographical archives, distinguishing between access to the records of the data bank and access to the full texts and bibliographical works. Testo inglese The evaluation during the project and ex post project will be facilitated by the fact that this research programme will conclude with the production of “finished” materials (fundamentally, the access on-line of a series of digital archives (full text Roman juridical resources, bibliographical archives, entire digitalised bibliographical works) which it will be possible to consult with appropriate software, as well as advanced semantic instruments, and therefore they may be highly appraised by official evaluators, as well as – it is hoped – by the national and international scientific community. The project also has a feature of particular interest, which the proponents consider an important element in terms of its scientific validity: it is the fact that the research units not only benefit from the cohesion determined by over a decade of collaboration in the realisation of a now asserted product (BIA), but they each represent a specific competency necessary for the success of the undertaking. The Perugia and Catanzaro Units are the most asserted research centres today, respectively for late ancient studies and juridical epigraphies, while the Parma Unit and ITTIG/CNR today offer the most advanced competencies in Italy with respect to digital bibliographical material and conversion of juridical materials to XML. 17 - Mesi persona complessivi dedicati al Progetto di Ricerca Numero Impegno Impegno Totale mesi 1° anno 2° anno persona Componenti della sede dell'Unità di Ricerca 9 57 57 114 Componenti di altre Università /Enti vigilati 0 0 0 0 Titolari di assegni di ricerca 2 9 9 18 Titolari di borse Dottorato 1 6 6 12 Post-dottorato 2 9 9 18 Scuola di Specializzazione 0 Assegnisti 0 Borsisti 1 11 11 22 Altre tipologie 9 49 49 98 Dottorati a carico del PRIN da destinare a questo specifico progetto 0 0 0 0 Altro personale 8 29 29 58 32 170 170 340 Personale a contratto TOTALE 18 - Costo complessivo del Progetto articolato per voci Voce di spesa Materiale inventariabile Unità I Unità II Unità III Unità IV Unità V TOTALE 6.000 0 4.000 5.000 0 15.000 0 0 0 0 0 0 11.000 1.500 2.000 8.000 7.000 29.500 7.000 4.500 6.000 4.000 10.000 31.500 10.000 20.000 21.000 10.000 20.000 81.000 0 0 0 0 0 0 Servizi esterni 8.000 0 8.000 5.000 4.000 25.000 Missioni 8.000 5.000 5.000 9.000 5.000 32.000 Pubblicazioni 6.000 4.000 4.000 5.000 4.000 23.000 Partecipazione / Organizzazione convegni 4.000 5.000 0 0 0 9.000 0 0 0 0 0 0 50.000 46.000 50.000 246.000 Grandi Attrezzature Materiale di consumo e funzionamento Spese per calcolo ed elaborazione dati Personale a contratto Dottorati a carico del PRIN da destinare a questo specifico progetto Altro TOTALE 60.000 40.000 19 - Prospetto finanziario suddiviso per Unità di Ricerca Unità I Unità II Unità III Unità IV Unità V TOTALE a.1) finanziamenti diretti, disponibili da parte di Università/Enti vigilati di appartenenza dei ricercatori dell'unità operativa 0 0 0 9.000 0 9.000 a.2) finanziamenti diretti acquisibili con certezza da parte di Università/Enti vigilati di appartenenza dei 18.000 12.000 15.000 5.000 15.000 65.000 ricercatori dell'unità operativa b.1) finanziamenti diretti disponibili messi a disposizione da parte di soggetti esterni 0 0 0 0 0 0 b.2) finanziamenti diretti acquisibili con certezza, messi a disposizione da parte di soggetti esterni 0 0 0 0 0 0 42.000 28.000 35.000 32.000 35.000 172.000 60.000 40.000 50.000 46.000 50.000 246.000 c) cofinanziamento richiesto al MUR TOTALE (per la copia da depositare presso l'Ateneo e per l'assenso alla diffusione via Internet delle informazioni riguardanti i programmi finanziati e la loro elaborazione necessaria alle valutazioni; D.
