Roma and Sinti settlements in Tuscany
Different phases of settlements
Current roma s communities situation in Tuscany should be interpreted by the different phases that characterized their
settlement in the area.
The Eighties and Nineties: romas migration from ex Jugoslavia countries
Nomad camps in Tuscany are the outcome of a first migration s phase started at the end of the eighties and
consolidated in the nineties. These are groups mostly coming from Kosovo and Macedonia.
In the mid-nineties the authorised settlements by municipality (and a lot of not authorised, but
recognised ,
settlements) had more then 2.500 roma and sinti.
Nowadays there are about 1.200 roma and sinti in nomad camps .
The years Two thousand: romanian roma
Since 2000 begin new roma migratory flows from Romania (most arrivals are between 2005 and 2007). These new
irregular settlements are excluded from the programs of nomadic camps overcoming.
An ancient presence: the sinti
These are italian resident citezens, lot of them stopped in some ares because of the total or partial relinquishment of their
travelling occupations. They are present in official settlements or in private areas; the latter solution represents a
settlement practice expressing exit and resistance strategy from institutional answer as for example nomad camps.
