INTERNATIONAL MAIL ART PROJECT
La Via Francigena in Valdelsa
Mille anni fa era la strada che percorrevano i pellegrini che andavano a Roma. La sua importanza è acquisita per lo
scambio culturale favorito dal passaggio di genti diverse e viene rievocata dal 2000. Lungo il percorso i pellegrini che
provenivano sin dalle regioni del Nord Europa, potevano fermarsi a riposare nei numerosi conventi, chiese, ospitali
(ospedali) per poi continuare il viaggio.
One thousand years ago, the Via Francigena was the road that the religious pilgrims traveled on their way to Rome. Its
importance is acquired for cultural exchange facilitated by the passage of different people and is commemorated since
2000. Along this road, the pilgrims, some of whom came all the way from northern Europe, could stop and rest at the
numerous convents, churches and hospitals before continuing on their way.

Arte Postale: corrispondenza creativa
L’Arte Postale (Mail Art) è un mezzo di espressione artistica che utilizza la comunicazione postale
come strumento creativo. Un Mail- Artista realizza opere destinate ad essere spedite, con regolare
affrancatura e regalate a un destinatario (generalmente un altro Mail-Artista) oppure espressamente
preparate per l’allestimento di una mostra su un tema dato.
La Mail-Art nasce ufficialmente nel 1962 con la fondazione della “New York School of
Correspondance” ad opera dell’artista americano Ray Johnson, ma vede i suoi precedenti negli invii di
cartolini e lettere decorate di pionieri quali Mallarmé, Apollinaire, Erik Satie, i Futuristi italiani, i Dadaisti
com Marcel Duchamp ed altri.
Oggi la Mail-Art vede la partecipazione di migliaia di appassionati in tutto il mondo che danno vita ad
una rete fittissima di corrispondenze creative e scambio di idee, ma soprattutto flusso dinamico di
comunicazione.
Mail Art: creative correspondence
The Mail-Art is a means of artistic expression that uses the postal communication as a creative tool. A
Mail-Artist creates works to be shipped with regular postage and given away to someone (usually
another Mail-Artist) or specifically prepared for the installation of an exhibition on a theme.
The Mail-Art was officially founded in 1962 with the foundation of the "New York School of
Correspondence" by American artist Ray Johnson, but he sees in his previous submissions of posta
cards and decorated letters of pioneers such as Mallarmé, Apollinaire, Erik Satie, the Italian Futurists,
the Dadaists with Marcel Duchamp and others.
Today the Mail-Art is attended by thousands of fans around the world that give rise to a dense network
of correspondence and exchange of creative ideas, but also the dynamic flow of communication.
