Nell’ultimo quarto del secolo XX,
lavorando con i migliori talenti
del design internazionale, la Alessi si è
progressivamente trasformata in una sorta
di laboratorio di ricerca nel campo delle
arti applicate. Abbiamo perfezionato una
pratica di mediazione tra le istanze del
mondo del progetto e quelle del mondo
del mercato che ci ha consentito di creare
degli oggetti con una componente di
poesia, creatività, cultura, sincerità,
attualità e design excellence che credo di
poter dire non hanno eguali nel
contemporaneo. Questa nostra natura ci
ha portati, negli anni più recenti,

a interessarci di ambiti produttivi che sia
per la specificità tecnologica sia per il
diverso tipo di distribuzione sono estranei
al nostro campo di operazioni tradizionale.
Abbiamo così deciso di offrire le nostre
competenze di design management e la
nostra visione del design come disciplina
creativa globale a aziende operanti in
ambiti di prodotto diversi dal nostro
originario, con l’obiettivo di dar vita a
oggetti davvero nuovi, pensati per il
pubblico evoluto del secolo XXI e
caratterizzati da quel mix di eccentricità e
stile, ludicità e cultura, ironia e eleganza
che ci sembra tipico degli oggetti Alessi:
un gioco di opposti su cui pensiamo
nessun altro marchio può vantare un
presidio altrettanto stringente e una
vocazione così precisa. Negli ultimi
vent’anni la Cucina è stata il teatro della
grande maggioranza dei progetti della
Alessi: i nostri autori vi hanno
introdotto la Fantasia, lo Humour,
l’Emozione, la Poesia, contribuendo alla

piccola rivoluzione sociologica che durante
gli anni ‘80 ha trasformato questa parte
della casa da luogo chiuso, dedicato
esclusivamente agli aspetti funzionali della
preparazione del cibo e tendenzialmente
inaccessibile a, invece, zona aperta di
ospitalità, luogo di divertimento: a
‘ricettacolo dell’immaginario domestico’.
Ma, per l’appunto, anche un altro luogo
della casa di origini più recenti,
il Bagno, è diventato progressivamente
uno dei luoghi più interessanti di
espansione per l’immaginario domestico
delle persone. Ed è curioso osservare
come questo fenomeno di costume non
sia stato
accompagnata
adeguatamente
dal buon design:
non molti sono
infatti gli oggetti
per il bagno,
piccoli e grandi,
dotati di un design
veramente
interessante,
divertente,
poetico. Il nostro
progetto de
ILBAGNOALESSI è
partito dunque
da questa
constatazione e si
è proposto
di contribuire a
colmare questa
lacuna. Abbiamo riunito intorno a noi tre
aziende, che rappresentano la migliore
tradizione europea nell’ambito dei sanitari
da bagno: la svizzera Laufen, il secondo
produttore mondiale di sanitari in
ceramica, la finlandese Oras, leader nella
produzione di rubinetti nei Paesi
scandinavi e l’italiana Inda, che da tre
generazioni occupa una posizione di rilievo
nella produzione di accessori e
arredamento per il bagno di alta qualità.
Con queste aziende abbiamo messo a
punto il modello operativo di una azienda
virtuale, nel quale Alessi si è occupata
della visione di marketing strategico, del
design management e della
comunicazione, mentre i Partner si sono
occupati dell’ingegnerizzazione, della
industrializzazione e della distribuzione dei
progetti. Ogni Partner si occupa delle
vendite dei suoi prodotti tramite la sua
distribuzione, che è stata tuttavia resa
omogenea e coordinata con quella degli
altri Partner anche al fine di sfruttare le
importanti sinergie rese possibili dalla diversa forza
distributiva delle tre aziende nei vari Paesi. Con la
collaborazione progettuale di Stefano Giovannoni abbiamo
creato, come si può vedere in questo catalogo, il più
completo scenario della stanza da bagno che sia mai stato
realizzato a livello industriale: dai sanitari in ceramica ai
rubinetti, agli accessori, agli specchi, ai mobili, alle cabinedoccia, all’illuminazione, al tessile da bagno. Il nostro
progetto è partito dal pensiero dello psicanalista Franco
Fornari, secondo il quale l’eros infantile viene evocato nel
neonato da due momenti fondamentali nei quali il volto e il
sorriso della madre catturano il suo sguardo: la poppata e
il bagnetto, i due eventi che scandiscono a ritmo alterno la
sua vita. Non a caso il Bagno è diventato uno dei luoghi
più interessanti di espansione per l’immaginario
domestico delle persone. Come luogo di pulizia fonda la
sua promessa su una perdita antica, avvenuta quando per
ognuno di noi l’accudimento della mamma ha cominciato
a ridursi e ognuno di noi ha dovuto pensare alla
propria toeletta in modo autonomo. L’inizio di
questa autonomia viene di solito associato a
un senso di freddo e di solitudine (una specie
di nuova nascita/separazione) e al ricordo di
una mano insaponata e frettolosa che ci
strofinava il volto, quasi soffocandoci nella
fretta, perché ci rifiutavamo di lavarci la
faccia. Anche lo spazio e l’attenzione
che vengono dedicati al Bagno
nell’ideologia attuale
dell’arredamento possono essere
letti come “ritorno del rimosso”,
cioè come tentativo di
recupero di una cultura
materna disposta a
concedere uno spazio
privilegiato alle
manifestazioni meno
pregiate della nostra
corporeità. Lo scenario
complessivo del bagno non
è dunque solo il luogo dove
puliamo il nostro corpo: è
molto di più, ci fornisce i
simboli per mediare dentro
di noi il conflitto tra codici
affettivi che rimandano alle
parti meno pregiate del
nostro Sé: tra la voglia di
regredire e la
necessità/voglia di crescere,
tra il codice della madre,
centrato sull’appagamento
del bisogno e sulla
gratificazione delle nostre
parti bambine, il codice del
bambino, centrato sulla
attività ludica,
il codice della corporeità
erotica, centrato sulla
contemplazione/esibizione
del proprio corpo e il codice del padre, centrato sulla
prestazione e sullo stimolo alla crescita. Questo scenario
assume in chi vi entra molti diversi livelli di significazione
che rimandano con evidenza all’universo del sogno. E’ per
questi motivi che, dopo essermi occupato per tanti anni
del teatro della Cucina, mi è venuta voglia di portare anche
in questa nuova area della casa la Fantasia, lo Humour,
l’Emozione, la Poesia dei nostri migliori designer. La
maggior parte dei Bagni oggi in commercio sono centrati
sul codice paterno, cioè sulla performance funzionale e
sulla ricerca tecnologica delle prestazioni, ma con risultati
abbastanza deludenti per quanto riguarda l’immaginario
profondo del pubblico e a volte francamente ridicoli sul
fronte del design (elementi elettronici che promettono
delle super performance ma sembrano attrezzi di tortura;
cabine doccia avveniristiche dotate di tutti gli ultimi
ritrovati della tecnologia ma prive di umanità; vasche
idromassaggio sofisticatissime ma che trasmettono un
leggero senso di paura nell’entrarci). In altri casi si sono
visti tentativi di usare il codice materno e il codice erotico,
ma anche qui con risultati non molto soddisfacenti
(vasche da bagno che alludono goffamente al grembo
materno; vasche a due piazze che, pur volendo
trasmettere un messaggio invitante a peraltro improbabili
o rari momenti orgiastici famigliari, nella realtà non
incoraggiano affatto a entrarci). La nostra scelta, in termini
di design, si è dunque orientata su un linguaggio
espressivo di matrice ludico-onirica nel quale il designer
ha saputo fondere con grande ispirazione i quattro
gruppi dei codici affettivi. Elementi marcatamente
centrati sul codice materno (in particolare le
porcellane, tonde e soft) sono così messi in scena
insieme con elementi di chiaro codice paterno (i
mobili e gli accessori in metallo,
dalle linee geometriche semplici e
rigorose), di codice erotico (come i
rubinetti, robustamente fallici) e di
codice bambino (come il gioco del
movimento a scomparsa del
rubinetto del mixer per la vasca da
bagno, o l’apertura della
cassettiera nel mobile alto). Trovo
che l’esito formale di questo
progetto sia fortemente innovativo
e esemplare: componendo in
equilibrio armonico i quattro codici
affettivi Stefano ha infatti saputo
superare la pratica del cifrario
stilistico personale che ha
caratterizzato praticamente tutto il
design di grido degli anni ‘80 e ‘90.
Utilizzando un approccio progettuale
fortemente innovativo, che definirei metastilistico, ha saputo attingere con libertà e
maestria al grande vocabolario delle forme che
sono state messe a disposizione dell’uomo per
creare degli oggetti insieme più emozionanti e
più umani. E’ forse una indicazione preziosa per
il nuovo design degli anni 2000.

During the last twenty-five years of the
20th century, working with the greatest
talents in international design, Alessi
has gradually evolved into a kind of
research laboratory in the field of applied
arts. We have perfected a way of
mediating between the world of design
and the market that allows us to create
objects in which poetry, creativity, culture,
sincerity,contemporaneity and design
excellence all combine. I like to believe
they are unparalleled in the industrial world
today. This our disposition has led us,
more recently, to look at manufacturing
areas that, both for they had highly
specialized technologies and different
distribution patterns, lay outside our
traditional area of activity. Consequently
we our design management skills, and our
conception of design as an all-embracing
creative discipline, companies operating in
different product areas from the area we
started in. Our aim is to create very new
objects for the sophisticated 21st century
public, objects that feature the
characteristic Alessi mix of eccentricity and
style, playfulness and culture, irony and
elegance, the interplay of opposites for
which, we believe, no other brand can
boast such a precise vocation and a knowhow so rigorously applied. Over the past
twenty years, the kitchen has been the
stage on which the great majority of Alessi
projects have focused. Here our artists
have introduced Fantasy, Humour, Emotion
and Poetry, playing a part in the low-key
sociological revolution that during the
eighties transformed that part of the home
from a closed-off, relatively inaccessible
area dedicated exclusively to the functional
aspects of food preparation, to one that
was open, hospitable, enjoyable: a
receptacle for the “home imaginary”.
But, more to the point, another part
of the home of more recent
origins, the bathroom, has
gradually become one of
the more interesting
places where people
can freely expand
their imaginary. And
it is curious to
observe how this
phenomenon has
not usually been
adequately
accompanied
by good

interesting,
amusing, poetic
design. Our project
ILBAGNOALESSI
takes this fact as its
starting point and
seeks to fill this gap.
We have joined forces
with three companies
representing the finest
European tradition in the field
of bathroom fixtures: the Swiss
Laufen, the world second-largest

producer of ceramic sanitary ware, the Finnish Oras, the
leading Scandinavian producer of bathroom faucets, and
the Italian Inda, which for three generations has had a
prominent position as a producer of high-quality bathroom
furniture and accessories. Together with these companies
we have put together an operational model for a virtual
company, in which Alessi addresses strategic marketing,
design management and communications, and our partners
concentrate on project engineering, production and
distribution. Each partner takes care of the sale of its own
products through its own distribution channels, that anyway
are coordinated and brought into line with those of the
other partners, with the aim to exploit the considerable
synergistic effect achieved by combining the different
distributive capabilities of the three companies in their
respective countries. Thanks to the project skills of Stefano
Giovannoni, we have created the most complete scenario
for the bathroom that has ever been realized on an
industrial scale, as can be seen from this catalogue: from
ceramic sanitary ware to faucets, from accessories to
mirrors, from furnishings to shower boxes, from lighting to
bathroom textile. Conceptually, the project takes as its
point of departure the work of psychoanalyst Franco
Fornari, according to whom childhood erotic instinct is
evoked by two fundamental moments when the child’s
attention is captured by its mother’s face and smile: feeding
and bathing. These two events mark the poles about which
the child’s life alternates. It is not a coincidence that the
bathroom has become one of the most interesting areas
where people home imaginary can expand. As a place
where cleaning is performed, the promise contained in the
bathroom relates to a primordial loss, the loss that occurs
for each one of us when our mother’s attention starts to
diminish and we have to think of performing our toilet
ourselves. The beginning of this independence is usually
associated with a sense of coldness and solitude (a sort of
new birth or separation) and with the memory of a hurried,
soapy hand that rubs our face, almost suffocating us in its
rush, because we refuse to wash our own face. The space
and attention that we assign to the bathroom in keeping with
our current interior design
philosophy can be read as a
“return of that which has
been suppressed”, that is, an
attempt to recover a
maternal culture that is
prepared to dedicate a
special place to the less
valued manifestations of our
corporeality.
Seen as a
whole,
therefore, the
bathroom
scenario is not
only the place
where we clean our bodies.
It is much more: it provides
us the symbols to mediate,
within ourselves, the
conflict between certain affective codes that recall the less
valued aspects of our Self, between the wish to regress
and the need/wish to grow, between the maternal code,
centred on the gratification of the child that is in ourselves
and meeting its needs, the childhood code, which is
centred on play, the code of erotic corporeality, which is
centred on the contemplation and exhibition of our body,
and the paternal code, which is centred on performance
and stimulus to growth. This scenario assumes many
different levels of meaning in whoever enters this space:
these levels clearly recall the universe of dreams. For all
these reasons, after spending so many years in the theatre
of the kitchen, I had the wish to bring Fantasy, Humour,
Emotion and Poetry of our best designers to this area of the
home. Most of the bathrooms actually on the market are
centred on the paternal code, that is, functional
performance and the related technological search. When it
comes to the deep imaginary of the public, however, the
results are quite disappointing, and when it comes to
design, well, frankly, they are sometimes ridiculous:
electronic components that promise astounding
performance but that look like instruments of torture;
futuristic shower boxes featuring all the latest technological
gadgetry but that are devoid of humanity; whirlpool baths of
the ultimate in sophistication but that convey a twinge of
fear when you step in. Elsewhere, one can find attempts at
using the maternal code or the erotic code, but the results
here are not very satisfactory either: baths that clumsily
allude to the maternal lap, or two-person baths that are
designed to convey an inviting message of family gathering,
however rare or unlikely they may be, but that in reality
don’t really encourage one to step in. In terms of design,
therefore, the solution we have chosen is based on an
expressive language from the oneiric, playful matrix in
which the designer has combined the four affective codes
in inspired fashion. Some components, markedly centred
on the maternal code (in particular, the ceramic ware, with
its round and soft shape) are placed alongside other
components that clearly belong to the paternal code (the
furniture and metal accessories, with their simple, austere
lines), the erotic code (such as the faucets, which are
resolutely phallic) and the childhood code (such as the
playful hideaway of the bath faucet, or the way the cabinet
drawers open). I believe the formal outcome of this project
is highly innovative and sets a fine example: by
harmoniously combining the four affective codes, Stefano
was able to overcome the practice of the personal stylistic
codebook that characterised practically all top design from
the eighties and nineties. Using a strongly innovative design
approach, that I would describe as meta-style, he has
drawn freely and masterfully from the vast repertoire of
forms available to us to create objects that are both more
exciting and more human. I think this may be a valuable
indication of where new design is heading for in the 2000s.

breakthrough, a one-piece unit fully incorporating
the pedestal. The same applies to the wallhung
basin, which is also a one-piece unit in which the
siphon is completely concealed.

mounting system (a product by Fisher, exclusively
marketed for Laufen) that guarantees rapid, simple installation. The mounting brackets are located out of sight and the sanitary units do not need
a mounting recess.
• Per i WC e i Bidet da parete è stato messo a
punto un nuovo sistema di fissaggio alla parete (di
produzione Fisher, per la prima volta sul mercato
in esclusiva per Laufen) che garantisce un’ installazione molto veloce e semplice. Gli elementi di

avec une surface anti-bactéries. Ils sont dotés
d’un système de fermeture automatique. Au moment de la fermeture, le couvercle et le siège s’abaissent tout seuls, lentement. S'enlève aisément
pour faciliter l'entretien.
• WC seats and covers are produced with a germresistant surface and automatic closing. While closing the seat and cover go down slowly without unpleasant noise. Simple removal for easy cleaning.
Faucets
• All units comply with European standards and
can therefore be installed without difficulty or
need for modification in any European country.
• All single lever faucets have the same technique, i.e. the special Oras ceramic disc cartridge for
long life and long-term precision of operation.
• The bath and shower faucets have a swivel
spout that is particularly useful in shower cabinets, for instance.
• The hand shower is made of brass and fitted
with plastic nozzles to help filter cleaning.
Accessories and furniture
• The lamps are designed and manufactured to
comply with European lighting standards, in consideration of humidity and safety in bathrooms.
Rubinetti
• The mechanism used in the drawers (made by
Blum) is adjustable and exceptionally stable, and
enables drawers to be removed for cleaning. Drawer sides are made of stainless steel.
• The furniture is fitted with special “Smove”
dampers (made by Salice) for noiseless and
smooth closing (one or two dampers are fitted, depending on the size of the item of furniture and its
door).
• The structure and front panel of the furniture is
finished in oak and coloured in teak, 16mm thick.

Robinets

• The accessories have a new type of wall mounting for secure, invisible mounting where the plate
is not visible. Automatic play offset also permits noiseless mounting without the use of dowels or
screws.

Waschbecken und Bidets verwendet wird, ist unsichtbar und über dem Wasserablauf angebracht,
so dass die Keramikfläche sauber erscheint.
• Alle keramiekdelen zijn behandeld met “Wondergliss” zodat een perfecte hygiëne mogelijk is
zonder dat zware reinigingswerkzaamheden vereist zijn. Kalkafzettingen en vuil vliegen met het
water van de zo behandelde oppervlakken weg.
• Voor WC en Bidet aan de wand is een nieuw
wandbevestigingssysteem ontwikkeld (een product van Fisher, voor de eerste keer op de markt
exclusief voor Laufer) waarmee de installatie zeer
snel en eenvoudig wordt. De bevestigingselementen zijn onzichtbaar en voor de installatie van de
keramiekdelen is geen nis in de muur vereist.

Kranen
• Todas las piezas de porcelana han sido tratadas
con “Wondergliss”, permitiendo una higiene perfecta sin tener que recurrir a un duro trabajo de
limpieza. Las incrustaciones por depósitos calcáreos suciedad no se adihieren en las superficies
tratadas con este sistema.
• Para los inodoros y los bidés suspendidos ha sido
puesto a punto un nuevo sistema de fijación a la
pared (producido por Fisher y por primera vez en el
mercado en exclusiva para Laufen) que garantiza
una instalación muy veloz y simple. Los elementos
de fijación no son visibles y las piezas de porcelana
no requieren nichos para la instalación.
• El asiento y la tapa del inodoro se presentan
con una superficie antibactérica y presentan un sistema de cierre automático. Al momento del cierre, la tapa y el asiento descenderán por sí solos,
lentamente. Se quita facilmente para facilitar su
limpieza.

Badkameraccessoires en-inrichting

Grifos
• Todas las piezas han sido construidas según las
normativas europeas: de esta manera pueden ser
instaladas sin problemas ni modificaciones en todas las naciones europeas.
• Todas las versiones de los grifos de palanca
simple poseen el mismo ‘corazón’ técnico: su
especial filtrante Oras con discos de porcelana
que garantizan una larga duración y precisión de
funcionamiento en el tiempo.
• Las versiones de grifos de pared para bañera y
para ducha poseen una boca de suministro giratoria, que se abre y se cierra, especialmente útil por
ejemplo en las cabinas-duchas.
• La ducha de mano ha sido producida con latón y
dotada de toberas de plástico que ayudan a la limpieza del filtro.
Accesorios y meubles de baño
• Las lámparas han sido concebidas y construidas

• Samtliga ettgreppsblandare har den välkända
keramikkasetten, som finns i Oras alla ettgreppsblandare. Lång och trygg funktion.
• Kar och duschblandarna för väggmontering har
en infällbar badkarspip. Blandaren lämpar sig därför också bra i duschutrymmen.
• Duschmikrofonen är tillverkad i mässing med
en silbricka i plast som är bra mot kalk och för
oreningar.
Badrumsutrustning och tillbehör
• Lamporna är tillverkade efter europeisk standard för att få installeras i våta utrymmen.
• Tillbehören har en ny typ av väggfästen med
dold och trygg fastsättning.
• Lådmekanismen är justerbar (tillverkad av
Blum). Lådorna, med sidorna i rostfritt stål, är
mycket stabila. De kan dras ut helt för att underlätta rengöring.
• Luckorna kan stängas utan att det smäller i
dem, tack vare speciella stötdämpare (tillverkade

especiales amortiguadores (producidos por la Salice) que permiten un cierre sin rebotes ni ruidos.
