The names of the 85 victims of the massacre at the Bologna train station of 2 August 1980 have been engraved repeatedly into a slab of marble, piercing it right through and creating a central hole that passes through it. The method of engraving commemorative gravestones has here been taken to the extremes. The pantograph has engraved the characters of the text several times, thus cutting even more deeply into the marble until it is eventually pierced. The process, which took several weeks (a pantograph engraves on average 3-4 mm at a time) is concluded in a formalisation for which the intrinsic, iconic commemorative function that the gravestone represents it taken to the extreme: the cancellation of an individual memory in favour of the abstraction and the evocation of a collective memory. This sculpture consists of a block of stone whose weight is equivalent to the weight of a boat, which was used by clandestine migrants. It was later drilled and reduced to the exact weight of the artist himself. In April Francesco Arena went to the island Lampedusa, located in the South of Sicily, last appendix of Southern Europe. This island is also used as a landing spot for numerous boats coming from Libya and the rest of Northern Africa. For the most part, migrants reach Lampedusa on large wooden crafts around seven metres long, with a weight that varies between 600 and 800 kilograms. The artist visited the deposit of wrecks in Taccio Vecchio, focusing on the ones that were to be demolished on command of Italian authorities. Having weighted one of the boats he then cut a block of “Pierre bleue” (a sedimentary stone), so it would weight the same amount of 700 kg as the chosen wreck. The block of marble was subsequently emptied and its weight was reduced to the one of the artist himself, 69,60 kg, still maintaining the original dimensions (100x80x32,8 cm). The artist has chosen stone for his work because he required a material that would not change weight during the process. The sculpture basically consists of two main specifications: first of all the weight of the boat, that gives away the dimensions of the block of marble and following the weight of the artist, that demands the procedure of drilling, the disposal of the material and finally the definite shape of the work. The finished sculpture is the result of a long procedure of subtraction of material, which eventually served as the weight of a container swamped with migrants. The artist, as an individual, tries to get in touch with this fairly unknown story. Besides being a reflection on the medium of sculpture as a whole, naturally, this work of art is also a self-portrait and the experiment of placing his own effigy into a remote ambiance, and grafting it onto a distant collective tale. Considering the fact that this sculpture includes a form of subtraction, the work of Francesco Arena becomes therefore a statement: the artist works with the limits of the sculpture, starting from the choice of materials to the use of tools, that allow a subtraction (90%) of the weight of a volume that does not change dimensions. Crater is a sculpture using 50 cubic meters (75 tons) of ground Netherlands, ordered through a structure of piles metal and wood. The amount of land used is ground missing from a crater dating back to World War II bombing of some of the Zealand area, this crater is only visible in a photograph of the time. On December 12th, 1969, a bomb exploded in the Piazza Fontana branch of the Banca Nazionale dell’Agricoltura in Milan. That same morning Giuseppe Pinelli finished his night shift at the Stazione Garibaldi railway station and made his way home to his wife and two daughters in Via Preneste 2. After resting a little, a friend called by and Pinelli went out to a bar in Via Mario Morgantini, from which in the afternoon he continued to the Ponte della Ghisolfa anarchist club in Piazza Lugano. From here he went to another anarchist club in Via Scaldasole, where he was found by police officers who called him into the Milan police headquarters in Via Fatebenefratelli for questioning, along with many other anarchists, in relation to the bomb attack earlier that same afternoon. Pinelli emerged from the police station two days later, on the night of December 16th, falling from the fourth floor office of Commissioner Luigi Calabresi. He was taken unconscious to the Fatebenefratelli hospital, where he died. I have retraced the itinerary that Pinelli took on his last day as a free man, from the station to his home, then on to the bar and to the anarchist clubs and finally to the police station. For a total length of 18,900 metres, this is a route that any of us could take any day of our lives, a meaningless route that disappears as we walk. My project is to use 1 centimetre thick slate slabs measuring 60x60 centimetres, onto which there have been scratched 98, 3-millimetre thick and 2-centimetre deep lines. Each slab is scratched with a total of 58.8 metres of lines, which in the 322 slabs that make up the entire work amounts to a total of 18,900 metres of lines, corresponding to the total distance walked by Pinelli. If arranged in a space that is large enough to contain the entire length of the work, the slabs should be arranged on the floor. If the work is arranged in a space that is not large enough for this, the extra slabs should be piled up at a certain point. Pannelli spaccati con Il Capitale - (Split Panels with Il Capitale), 2009 Poplar compensate, edition in five tomes of Il Capitale, adhesive tape / Multistrato di pioppo, edizione in cinque tomi de Il Capitale, nastro adesivo; cm 120x30x103 19,45 metri di metallo sotto forma di scala (la caduta di Pinelli) – (19.45 metres of metal ladder - Pinelli’s fall) 2009 Zinc plated metal / Metallo zincato; cm 130x46x287 19.45 metres of zinc plated metal bars have b een used to build a foldable ladder. The length of the ladder is the height that the anarchist Pinelli fell from the fourth floor office of the police station in Via Fatebenefratelli in Milano. Several items were cut to a maximum height of 92 centimeters. The 92 cm are the same height of the railing of the window of the police headquarters in Milan on December 15 which crashed in 1969 the anarchist Giuseppe Pinelli. s.t.(Bari) Chiodi per calcestruzzo, pavimento, targhe di marmo / Nails for concrete, flooring, marble plates; dimensioni ambientali / environmental; 2009 Il perimetro in scala 1:1 della platea del teatro Dubrovka di Mosca è stato disegnato conficcando 208 chiodi nel pavimento del teatro Margherita di Bari ad una distanza di 50 centimetri uno dall’altro. To scale the perimeter of the range of 1:1 Dubrovka theater in Moscow was designed 208 nails sticking in the floor of the theater Margherita of Bari at a distance of 50 centimeters from each other. The work to restructure the theater will be incorporated the nails from the floor of the final Margherita. Two marble plaques 30x20 cm recount the action and show the plan of the theater Margherita engraved with the perimeter of the range of Dubrovka. For over a year the artist worked on 106 small and medium-scale structures in a variety of materials, from untreated clay to stone, iron and an assemblage of scrap objects and materials from other sculptures. Each of these structures is built in such a way as to be able to support a classic hammer and sickle Communist Party symbol. The surface area of the balcony of Palazzo Venezia, from which Mussolini delivered his speeches to the crowd, has been repeated five times on pieces of felt. Each piece of felt was then cut into the same size as the object to which it provided the backing. At the center of the room there is a wood bench, a sculpture-object that is part of the project Cose/Things that includes the creation of everyday objects, such as furniture, tools, etc. made of wood and starting from a wooden quantitative given: two wood beams measuring 300x25x10cm and one measuring 170x25x10cm. The beams are the two parts that form a cross, the wood product that is the simplest to make and that is also rich with symbolism and layers of meaning. The project requires a carpenter to use the two pieces of wood of a potential cross to make an object using all the wood available, without wasting any, adapting the wood that needs to be cut to the object he wishes to make or that the artist asks him to make. 4018 square metres of black carpeting, the equivalent of an open plan office space on one of the floors of New York’s World Trade Center, has been cut into 780 trapezoid shapes measuring cm 343x200x100x450 and piled piece over piece into a vertical monolith that fits into a corner of the entrance of the chamber of commerce in Turin. s.t. Let us stop being men, now, and for a long time we shall be marmots. It is beastly, quickly exhausting, but necessary. (translated by Anne Ellis Ruzzante) In Beppe Fenoglio’s novel Johnny the Partisan this was the radio bulletin used by Nord – the leader of the Badoglian partisans who were active in the Langhe and around Alba – to order his men to dissolve the partisan brigades at the beginning of the winter of 1944-45 and to meet again in the spring to pursue their armed battle against the Nazifascists. This sentence would be carved with a saw into the walls of one of the rooms at the Fondazione Sandretto at Guarene d’Alba, which is part of that territory where the tales told by Fenoglio took place. This story is part of the landscape and the walls that sink their foundations into this landscape; through my action, I make it visible, but in reality the sentence, the invitation to preserve one’s own ideas about consumption and one’s gaze from being blinded, is already part of the walls. At the end of this exhibition the walls will be repaired. The first page of the daily newspaper La Repubblica from the 12th September 2001 has been completely blacked out by using black ink pens, the only blank areas are the 24 letters of the alphabet present in the title and in the articles of the front page of that day, there is no letter j or x because it was not present in any words written on the front page. s.t. Different images framed and put in a metal structure are tilted due to the counter-balance of weight. The counter-balance means that the frame is never parallel with the floor, which of course depends on the orientation of the earth. 328 square meters of parquet were used to make this tower. The 140 bundles of parquet was then stacked horizontally and vertically and held together with grey duct tape. All this material is held together by a metal structure which acts like a cage and it also supports a metal staircase. This staircase leads to the top of the structure and allows the viewer to see all from a different view. This tower has a different story: the stacks of parquet that has a surface of 328 square meters corresponds to the approximate measurement of the surface of the metal factory Ilva of Taranto, where the workers were idyll and were forced to do nothing. A plan of Caprera, a small island near Maddalena in Sardegna which was bought in 1855 by Giuseppe Garibaldi. This piece was made using the beard hair of the artist which was collected for a years time. A portrait of the artist’s face is made with hydraulic plaster, a malleable material similar to clay but which doesn’t dry; it always remains soft. The portrait is delicate, easily corruptible. Strumento is a musical instrument similar to a piano. It has a keyboard composed of seven keys of various shapes and dimensions, and a system of pistons that function as hammer blows that strike crystal caskets to create “sounds”. There are six caskets held in the body of the instrument and each of them contains furniture: a bed, bedside table, couch, small reclining table, and a pair of sandals. The furnishings are copies of the furniture found in the cell of San Pio of Pietralcina, preserved in the convent of San Giovanni Rotondo. Each small hammer blow that strikes the casket makes a different sound because the sounds change according to the size and contents of each casket. s.t. Created inside a 270 x 120 x 250 cm wooden crate, usually used in the transportation of merchandise, are two small rooms. The first measures 70 x 120 cm and functions as an entrance from which one has access to the second room of 200 x 120 cm., devoid of an opening towards the outside. The walls are made of plywood and the floor is of grey linoleum. Each room is illuminated by a light bulb. The larger room is furnished with a fold-up bed, blanket, sheets and a pillow, a chemical toilet and small washbasin, a shelf with a ream of A4 paper, pen, bottle of water, roll of toilet paper and soap. The cell is the life-size reconstruction of the assumed place where Aldo Moro was held prisoner in via Montalcini 8, Rome.
