Aims The aim of the English Language I (Business English) course is to acquire both the active (oral and written) and the passive (listening, reading) linguistic skills specific to the business sector. Such skills are acquired by developing a vocabulary of specialised terms, learning or reinforcing grammar structures that are frequently used in business language and developing the necessary skills in order to distinguish between different registers and contexts. Teaching method The course consists of 45 hours comprising both lecture-style classes and practical classes in which students are invited to take part actively, either individually or in groups. The course requires students to complete homework assignments indivudually or in teams to be discussed during the lessons. Exam The exam covers the topics that have been dealt with during the lessons and consists in a two-hour written test that will test grammar, vocabulary, listening and reading comprehension. The mark of the written exam makes up 50% of the final mark. Students who complete homework assignments and participate in teamwork activities will receive an extra point to be added to the mark of the written test. The remaining 50% of the final mark is obtained by passing the following tests with Professor Csaki: 25% – academic writing, 25% – business presentation.
