// Descrizione
The HSB Living Lab (Go thenburg, Sweden) is a habitatio n infrastructure, in the fo rm o f student ho using, that aims to be a co creative so cial space fo r experimenting with sustainable techno lo gy and lifestyle in o rder to develo p inno vative co ncepts and
pro ducts. It has been develo ped thro ugh co -creative, o pen-inno vatio n pro cesses with HSB (Swedish Ho using asso ciatio n),
Chalmers University o f Techno lo gy and Jo hanneberg Science Park alo ng with o ther industry partners. Being a Next
Generatio n Living Lab, it stands fo r o ptimizatio n o f the human interface in a real life co ntext.
The HSB Living Lab is a third-generatio n Living Lab that is ho me to so me 30 + students and researchers, who reside in the
buildings 29 apartments. It is a unique venue fo r real-wo rld, user-centred pro to typing and inno vatio n. Students and
researchers co llabo rate with partners in industry and academia in the research and develo pment o f sustainable techno lo gies
and behavio ural practices.
The HSB Living Lab allo ws researchers fro m academia and their industry partners to test o n a small, but real life scale. Bo th
sho rt and lo ng-term research-driven inno vatio n pro jects will be co nducted thro ugho ut the pro ject’s ten-year life span. Results
may be presented in exhibitio n areas within the building, pro viding a venue fo r enhancing understanding o f sustainable
so lutio ns. The materials and metho ds tested here are expected to impro ve the quality and sustainability o f building pro jects,
bo th fo r new ho mes as well as reno vatio ns, accelarting the uptake o f climate-smart inno vatio n in the built enviro nment.
The HSB Living Lab is a fo ur-sto ry mo dular building with residential and research sectio ns. The infrastructure includes:
· Meeting ro o ms
· Sho wro o m fo r pro ject results
· Multifunctio nal laundry ro o m
· Pro to typing lab
· 12 Adaptable wall sectio ns, which can be remo ved and replaced to enable testing o f vario us inno vative façade materials and
assembly techniques.
· An extensive senso r netwo rk, pro viding precise measurements and data fo r research, develo pment and inno vatio n pro jects.
Next Generatio n Built Enviro nment:
• This pro ject is referred to as the third-generatio n o f Living Labs because it is a real-wo rld enviro nment where target-users
participate in bo th testing and develo pment o f inno vative pro ducts and services. The main go al o f the pro ject is to identify and
study the barriers and, thereby, to o ptimize the interface between human behavio ur and techno lo gical systems.
• Since the co -creatio n takes place in the users’ natural enviro nment, i.e. during their regular living and wo rking activities, the
3rd generatio n living lab is designed and equipped to allo w systematic o bservatio ns, measurements, evaluatio ns and
refinement o f the starting hypo theses.

HSB Living Lab is a smart building and can be the winner o f users' cho ise because o f:
T he 20 0 0 se nso rs t hat m e asure e ve ry de t ail.
We have installed mo re than 20 0 0 meters to really measure what is happening at a high granularity level and the systems
aro und the building to use that info rmatio n in the light o f energy savings and applied inno vatio ns.
T he co m m o n re se arch f und f o r t e st ing & de ve lo ping inno vat io ns.
We have a smart building because we have integrated it with Chalmers University, HSB, Jo hanneberg Science Park and a
gro up o f smart co mpanies that have made a research fund o f o ver 0 ,25 MLN a year, fo r ten years, to test and develo p
inno vatio ns inside the building. The residents are integral in supplying feed-back and taking part in o pen inno vatio ns sessio ns
with the co mpanies and scientists.
It s 4 4 st e e l m o dule s.
HSB Living Lab is made up o f 44 steel mo dules. Their steel co nstructio n lets us adjust their dimensio ns and build multi-sto rey
buildings, to o . The mo dules’ fast assembly time meant we co uld clo se part o f the ro ad belo w fo r just o ver a week, having
buses and o ther traffic make a small deto ur, while lifting the building into place using a crane; a so lutio n that wo uld have been
next to impo ssible if the building had taken the usual 18 mo nths to erect. Rapid co nstructio n is o ne o f the many advantages
we see in building in mo dule-fo rm. Ano ther is safe, dry, indo o r co nstructio n. It’s a co mbinatio n that’s hard to beat.
HSB Living Lab’s co nstructio n is a research pro ject in itself. We aim to investigate whether co nstructio n using mo dules and
tempo rary building permits is a sustainable, eco no mical, enviro nmentally-friendly and so cially-viable business mo del. We
believe this appro ach co uld be the key to pro ducing new ho mes quickly – a must fo r to mo rro w’s cities.
T he ne w appro ach t o archit e ct ural de sign.
HSB Living Lab is a tempo rary structure meant to be dismantled and relo cated after ten years. The building’s tempo rary nature
do esn’t mean it gets a free pass o n functio nality, tho ugh. It must still meet the needs o f everyo ne who lives here. It is a building
that takes a new appro ach to design, using smart “cubic” so lutio ns, instead o f the traditio nal 2D mind-set.Our fo cus is functio n
and flexibility. Our mantra is adaptability. Our aim is to wo rk to gether to pro duce sustainable pro ducts and services fo r the
ho mes o f the future.
T he lo w-t e m pe rat ure , re t urn dist rict he at ing syst e m .
The building's o wn heating system co nsists bo th o f o rdinary radiato rs and underflo o r heating. This system is unique in that it
has been adapted to heat the building using lo w-temperature return heat. Inside HSB Living Lab's distrct heating substtio n are
three flo w pipes insted o f the usual two , which is the biggest difference co mpared to an o rdinary building. Outside the
substatio n, bo th an o rdinary high-temperature supply line co nnectio n and two lo w-temperature return line co nnectio ns
enter. This means we can heat the building using heat so urces o ther than return heat when we relo cate it in the future. The
advantage o f lo w-temperature district heating systems is that lo cal waste heat, small-scale heat pro ductio n and energy
sto rage can be used mo re effectively, making them an attractive part o f future energy
systems. Flexibility=efficiency=sustainability!
T he building's indo o r e nviro nm e nt .
Cleaner and greener living is o ur ultimate aim therefo re we measure ammo nia emissio ns, carbo n dio xide, mo uld spo res and
o ther substances that might exist in the ro o ms as well as the substances their paints and flo o rings release into the air. Our
aim is to assess the air quality inside HSB Living Lab and to see if any reactio ns o ccur when different emulsio ns/emissio ns
mix. What happens to the air we breathe when we add a new so fa to the ro o m? Do es it matter what material the co ffee table is
made fro m? We have already started taking measurements and the first samples have been sent fo r analysis.
It s laundry ro o m and co m m unit y hall.
In the building a futuristic laundry studio has been designed in o rder to create an integrated lo unge/laundry ro o m furniture suite
– a place where yo u can hang o ut with yo ur neighbo ur and have a cup o f co ffee while yo u wash. The research that will be
co nducted here will have a so cial fo cus to begin with.
T he Whit e ro o m
The White Ro o m has no fixed furnishings, but is a space dedicated to dynamism. It gives bo th Chalmers and every researcher
everywhere the o ppo rtunity to test new ideas, research the sustainable ho using so lutio ns o f the future and, ho pefully, create
wo rld-first results.
