La billetta a gradiente (o riscaldata conicamente) è realizzata unen- Al Settembre 2004 22-09-2004 15:52 tion force applied on the container wall. The die is inserted in the container to detect the load on the die surface by the die load cell. The ram load is equal to the sum of the container load and the die load. Furthermore, the exit temperature is measured by a radiation thermometer located 200 mm from the die exit. Experiment in Round Bar Extrusion The extrusion conditions in Table 3 for isothermal extrusion calculated by FEM have been applied in an actual extrusion experiment. Experimental results using uniform and taper heated billets are shown in Figure 15 and Figure 16. Both of them achieved isothermal, isopressure, and isospeed extrusion. There is no difference among die load, container load, and ram load between the uniformly heated billet and the taper heated billet, even though input data were different in the FEM analysis. The reason must be as follows. Although the taper heated billet is made by attaching a 15) Isothermal extrusion of a round bar using a uniform temperature billet. Pagina 141 TABLE 3 • EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONS FOR ROUND BAR EXTRUSION CONDIZIONI DELLA PROVA DI ESTRUSIONE DI UNA BARRA TONDA high temperature billet in a half length and a low temperature billet of the same length in the preheated container just before the extrusion, the temperature difference decreases by half within only 20 seconds in such a short billet of 200 mm length. The taper heated billet quickly changed to a uniform temperature billet in the time from loading the billet to the start of extrusion. Figure 17 shows a comparison of the proof stress of the extruded section after a T1 heat treatment between the taper heated and uniform temperature billets. The difference in proof stress of the extruded material using the taper heated billet is 11 MPa whereas that of using the uniform temperature billet is 2 do nel contenitore preriscaldato, immediatamente prima dell’estrusione, due mezze billetta, una riscaldata ad alta temperatura e una a bassa temperatura. ALLUMINIO E LEGHE - SETTEMBRE 2004 141 Al Settembre 2004 22-09-2004 15:52 MPa. The difference in the taper heated billet is five times larger than that of the uniform temperature billet, even though both were extruded at a constant exit temperature. This indicates that the proof stress of the extruded section may be influenced by the preheated billet temperature condition rather than by the exit temperature. Therefore, it is considered that a uniform temperature billet is necessary to keep the mechanical properties of an extruded section constant throughout its entire length. Experiment in Rectangular Bar Extrusion There was no difference in the extrusion load between the uniform temperature billet and the taper heated billet in which the temperature difference was 70 °K with the billet length 200 mm. Next, a billet of 300 mm length with a taper heated temperature difference of 190 °K was examined in order to compare with isothermal extrusion using a uniform temperature billet. The reason why the rather large temperature difference is assigned is to examine the real influence of the taper temperature during the extrusion process, because the temperature difference reduces by half within 30 seconds in the case of a billet of 300 mm length. The extrusion conditions are shown in Table 4. A rectangular bar of 30 mm width and of 4 mm thickness was extruded from the billet of 94 mm diameter. The experimental results for isothermal extrusion using a uniform temperature billet are shown in Figure 18. The exit temperature and the die load are almost constant throughout the ram stroke. The experimental results for extrusion of a taper heated billet are shown in Figure 19. The exit temperature decreases about 40 °K and the die load increases about 300 kN during extrusion due to the tempera- 142 Pagina 142 ture decrease of the material that enters into the deformation zone. The maximum container load of 2900 kN in extrusion with the taper heated billet compares with 2000 kN in the isothermal extrusion with a uniform temperature billet due to the large deformation resistance caused by the colder metal at the rear of the billet. Accordingly, the maximum ram load of the taper heated billet at 4400 kN is also lager than that of the uniform temperature billet at 3500 KN. The uniform temperature billet is superior to the taper heated billet relative to the reduction of extrusion force and the increase of extrusion speed. A comparison of proof stress of the extruded section after T5 heat treatment between the taper heated and uniform temperature billets is shown in Figure 20. The variation in proof stress of the taper temperature billet along its entire length is 15 MPa versus 5 MPa for the uniform temperature billet. Figure 21 shows a comparison of the width of the extruded section between the taper and uniform temperature billets. The width of the extruded section using the uniform temperature billet remains constant throughout its entire length. By contrast, the width of the extruded section of the taper heated bil- ALUMINIUM AND ITS ALLOYS - SEPTEMBER 2004 190 °K di gradiente di temperatura, che è stata confrontata con l’estrusione isotermica di billette a temperatura uniforme. 17) Comparison of proof stress of the extruded section between the taper and uniform temperature billets. La variazione dello snervamento Al Settembre 2004 22-09-2004 15:52 Pagina 143 technologies let increases during extrusion due to the decrease in billet temperature at the die exit. The width of the extruded section is plotted as a function of die load as shown in Figure 22, showing a strong correlation between them. Therefore, in order to keep the dimensions of the extruded section constant, it is important to maintain the die load constant during extrusion. Experiment in C-Channel Extrusion Finally, an example of an indus- 19) Extrusion of a rectangular bar using a taper heated billet. Figure 23 shows a comparison of the width of a Cchannel-shaped section for isothermal extrusion using a uniform temperature billet and conventional extrusion using a taper heated billet of 700 mm length with a temperature difference of 70 °K on a 2600-ton press, for a container inner diameter of 264 mm. The variation of C-channel width decreases from 1.5 18) Isothermal extrusion of a rectangular bar using a uniform temperature billet. Conclusion 1. An equation for achieving isothermal and isopressure extrusion using a uniform temperature billet has been presented. 2. Bryant, A.J., W. Dixon, Roger A.P.
