Her family was quite wealthy so, when her father died aboard of the Titanic in 1912, she inherited a small fortune. At 21 she started to work as a clerk in an avantgarde book-store and became involved with the members of the artistic community. In 1920 she left the U.S.A. and went to Paris where she met many avant-garde artists and writers. In those years she got married to sculptor and writer Laurence Vail and had two children Sinbad and Pegeen. A few years later the couple divorced, Peggy opened a gallery of modern art in London (1938) and she began to collect works of art. After the outbreak of World War II she bought all the abstract and surrealist paintings that she could, trying to save them from destruction. Among these paintings there were several Picassos, Miròs, Magrittes and one Chagall. Peggy had now one of the most important private collection of modern art so she decided to return to New York where in 1942 she opened a gallery which she called The Art of This Century Gallery. There she could finally present the European painters to the American public. She had a special talent in discovering new artists and in promoting their careers. Painters such as the American Jackson Pollock and the French-German Max Ernst (her second husband) owe her much of their success. At the end of World War II she went back to Europe. She bought Ca’ Venier dei Leoni , a beautiful palace on the Grand Canal, in Venice, which became both her home and the place where she displayed her collection. On her death, in 1979, she donated her home and collection to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. Today the Peggy Guggenheim Collection is one of the most important museums in Italy for European and American art of the first half of the 20th century. Cubism, Surrealism and Abstract Impressionism are all represented and the works on display include those of prominent American modernists and Italian futurists. Peggy Guggenheim died in Venice and she is now interred in the garden of Ca’ Venier next to her dogs. Her Home in Venice: Ca’ Venier dei Leoni JACKSON POLLOCK 1912 –1956 a short biography “On the floor I’m more at ease, more a part of the painting, since this way I can walk around in it, work from the four sides and be literally “in” the painting.” 1947 Jackson Pollock was born in America in 1912. He began to study painting in 1929 in New York. At the beginning of his career he was influenced by several styles but in the 1940s he was painting in a completely abstract manner. He became famous for his “drip and splash” style. Instead of using the traditional easel he put his canvas on the floor or on the wall and poured and dripped his paint from a can. Instead of using brushes, he manipulated it with sticks, towels or knives. Sometimes he obtained an impasto made of sand broken glass etc. This manner of painting was called ACTION PAINTING and was considered as a direct expression of the unconscious moods of the artists. Instead of using brushes, he manipulated it with sticks, towels or knives. Sometimes he obtained an impasto made of sand broken glass etc. This manner of painting was called ACTION PAINTING and was considered as a direct expression of the unconscious moods of the artists. Some people say that he was influenced by Native American sand painting, made by trickling thin lines of coloured sand onto a horizontal surface. Critics also believe that with his drip painting he broke the ice. He showed what art could become. He abandoned all conventions of a central motif. He danced in semi-ecstasy over canvases spread across the floor. He painted NO IMAGE, JUST ACTION. He said: ”the painting has a life of its own: I try to let it come through”. The eye of the viewer is kept continually eager, not allowed to rest in any particular area. With his style, Pollock abandons the traditional idea of composition because there isn’t any identifiable parts in the whole canvas. This characteristic will be very important for the new American painting of the late 40s and early 50s. During the 1950s Pollock continued to produce figurative black and white works and by the 1960s he was generally recognised as the most important figure in the most important movement of this century in American painting. Jakson Pollock married the painter Lee Krashner but his private life was quite unhappy. He died in a car crash in 1956.
