TELEPHONE 905-770-8656 FAX 905-770-2678 ATTENDANCE 905-770-3622 GUIDANCE 905-770-8307 Dear Parents/Guardians and Students, We are off to a great start this school year. Our students are energized and enthusiastic. They continue to impress us with their attitude, behaviour and commitment to education. I am truly proud of the dedication, hard work and commitment from the Jean Vanier staff as I reflect on the many activities going on in the school. Our grade nine orientation to Muskoka Woods Camp was very successful as our newest students were exposed to many different activities and worked on a banner that will hang in our school for many years. More importantly, our students met and supported each other in a friendly, collaborate environment. We are organizing a visit with Mr. Vanier at his home in France during March break of 2011. Mr. Vanier has confirmed the date, and activities at the original L’Arche community are planned for the whole day. The remaining eight days will be spent in and around Paris. Jean Vanier Trustees Ann Stong Mike Rizzi Our students have shown that we are a giving community by donating generously to our Hurricane Igor relief fund for our sisters and brothers in Newfoundland. We collected over $850.00 to this cause. The students also contributed greatly to our Thanksgiving Food Drive. Live simply Volume 2 Scores for the Provincial EQAO Test of Numeracy were posted last month. We are very pleased as 90% of our grade nine students enrolled in our Academic level Math course met or exceeded the Provincial standard. The success rate for students in our Applied level course was 47%. This may be above Board and Provincial scores, however we have included an increase of this number as part of our School goals for 2010/2011. November is traditionally the month of remembrance and reflection. It may take personal or communal expression. In either case, it is an important opportunity to think about where we are and what we are doing. Congratulations to our newly elected Catholic School Council. There are familiar faces from last year accompanied by many new members. In fact, our Council has grown by over 40%. Our School Council Fundraising Committee has embarked on a campaign to support classroom activities that will enhance your children’s education. Information is included with the report cards. We certainly appreciate and value your Council’s tireless and continued support of our school initiatives. There is much to celebrate here at Jean Vanier and I treasure your support of our school community. I look forward to seeing you on Nov. 18th at Parent/Teacher Interview Evening. CHAPLAINCY "It is only when we stand up, with all our failings and sufferings, and try to support others rather than withdraw into ourselves, that we can fully live the life of community." — Jean Vanier (Community and Growth) It is hard to believe that we have begun our second year together as a Catholic Community. Similar to last year, the students and teachers here at Vanier have been busy building the foundation of a school that is inclusive and truly emulates the teachings of our namesake. There are already many amazing things happening that demonstrate our commitment to love as Christ loves and to build a sense of family, where all members are significant and feel as though they belong. We were blessed with a beautiful day of sunshine as we celebrated our opening liturgy outdoors in our courtyard on September 10th. To be able to celebrate our faith and begin the school year together by receiving Jesus Christ, while also celebrating Jean Vanier’s 82nd birthday is a wonderful gift to our community. We would like to thank Father Doug Hilmer, from the Henry Carr Farm, for taking his afternoon to lead us in our liturgy. He is a true friend and inspiration to our students and staff. We would also like to send out an enormous thank you to the Spirit Movers from L’Arche Daybreak for blessing us with such a moving performance. It was a wonderful afternoon spent outdoors, surrounded by God’s creations. During their lunch hour the students and staff enjoyed birthday cake in honour of Mr. Vanier’s birthday. The religion Guest Speaker Program is also underway. All religion classes this semester will have the opportunity to hear a variety of speakers from agencies in the Toronto Area, dealing with topics relevant to our faith development. Our students are incredibly blessed to have the opportunity to hear from these agencies, the services they provide, and from individuals whose lives have changed because of their help. In addition to the guest speaker program, all of our religion classes are taking part in a religion retreat this semester. The Grade 9’s travelled to Muskoka Woods in September, where they took part in a retreat that focused on transition and their entry into high school. The Grade 10’s visited Shadow Lake recently, where they participated in a Social Justice themed retreat. The Grade 11 retreat is approaching quickly. Our senior students will be visiting various places of worship in the area, which coincides perfectly with their studies of World Religions in Grade 11. The staff have been thoroughly enjoying their time with their students to reflect, to feel the presence of Jesus, and be guided by the Holy Spirit. It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving is over and that Advent is fast approaching. All students and staff have been invited to visit the chapel at any time during the month of November to write the names of loved ones who have died, in the book of life and to pause for a moment in prayer. On November 26th we are beginning to offer the students and staff at Vanier the opportunity to have “Lunch with Jesus.” We will be offering mass in our school chapel during both Lunch A and Lunch C. In preparation for Christmas, the birth of our Saviour, we have planned our Advent liturgy, which we will celebrate next door at Our Lady Queen of the World Parish, on December 9th. We have been incredibly busy here, but we are so excited and amazed by our students and staff. You are always in our prayers. Please continue to pray for us. We ask that Jean Vanier continue to pray for our school community and that we strive to live each day in light of his principles. God Bless us all! The Chaplaincy Team - M. Wade and M. Rooney PARENT / TEACHER INTERVIEWS Students have completed the first half of the semester and it is time for them to take stock of their efforts and levels of achievement. As we continue on our mission of developing young minds and bodies, students need to reflect on their objectives for the semester to determine if they are meeting or exceeding them. Parents play a vital role in promoting academic excellence. One of the principle ways to be effective is to review your child’s report card and attend Parent/Teacher Conference Night on Thursday, November 18th, although parental interest in their child’s academic performance ought to be ongoing throughout the school year. Research confirms that parent support and positive monitoring of their child’s progress can be decisive in the success or failure of their child. All of us working together will ensure success, which is what we want for all of our students. Please be sure to make appointments early to avoid disappointment. Appointment sheets have been included with your child’s report cards. Interviews run from 3:30 to 5:00 and 6:30 to 8:30. Please remember jean vanier is a fragrance free Environment! We have staff Members and students with serious allergies! REMEMBRANCE DAY According to the Roman Catholic Church, November is the month of remembrance and reflection. This corresponds to the time in the natural cycle for harvest and dying. We have long called it the “month of the poor souls”, but many today prefer the “month of all saints”. It includes both All Saints’ Day, November 1, and All Souls’ Day, November 2. We distinguish between our loved ones in heaven and - “all saints”, who pray for us – and our loved ones who have died and for whom we are moved to pray. These are “the poor souls”, who still may be undergoing the purging process of death-to-self that follows repentance. In this month of harvest and dying, the Church memorializes the dead and recognizes Jesus as Lord of the living and the dead. ODERNS DEPARTMENT Trip to St. Donat, Quebec: 13 – 16 February 2011 The Moderns Department is excited to announce that a group of ten students will be accompanying Madame Schmidt on the slopes during our upcoming Grade 10 “Living-in-French Language Trip” to St. Donat, Quebec, in the heart of the Laurentians. The trip will take place February 13-16, 2011. The students, who are currently pursuing French as an elective course at Vanier, will be immersed in the French language while engaging in rich, cultural experiences. They will also have the opportunity to engage in daily outdoor activities including skiing and/or snowboarding at nearby Mont Garceau. We are hoping to make this an annual trip...something for our current Grade 9 students to consider for next year! Bon ski! Madame Schmidt CATHOLIC SCHOOL COUNCIL I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you back to the halls of Jean Vanier CHS and for those of you who are new to the school this year—WELCOME. Our School Council is in full swing. We had our elections in September and I am proud to announce that we doubled in size. We currently have voted in 22 parent volunteers which make up our Parent Council. Congratulations and thank you to our new Jean Vanier CHS Council for 2010/2011. Our Social Committee is busily preparing for our Parent Teacher interviews on November 18th as well as a Parent Information Night on December 2nd for parents of children in Grade 8. Our fundraising committee is in the process implementing a “One Time Family Donation” and we will have a table set up on the evening of Parent Teacher Interviews, please stop by our table for more information. This year we were once again approved for our Parents Reaching Out Grant, which we have entitled Bridging the Gap. We will be purchasing Parenting DVD’s for our Library, which will be age appropriate to aid in parenting, educating and connecting with our high school students. Please look for upcoming information in future newsletters to inform you when the DVD library will be available. Please visit our Council Corner on the Jean Vanier Website for more information as well, if you have any questions please email the parent council at [email protected] All the best for a safe and happy Christmas Season, Nicole Alberico Jean Vanier CHS Chair JVEC JEAN VANIER ENVIRONMENTAL COUNCIL News: Adopt-a-Park! In the fall of 2010, JVEC “adopted” a park in our community. With the help of student volunteers, JVEC cleaned up Timber Mill Park on Tuesday, November 9th. It was an opportunity for the students to socialize, have fun, and care for our environment. We can all make a difference by keeping our neighbourhood green! Much appreciation to Ms. Eun and Mr. Radica for overseeing the event. EQAO MATH RESULTS Several weeks ago our current Grade 10 students received their EQAO Math report card. We would like to acknowledge the fine work of our Math Department. Our Grade 9 students from last year faired well. In the academic results, 90% of our students achieved level 3 or higher on the assessment. Our applied students exceeded the Provincial results and were slightly higher than the Board’s overall result. Please find attached the highlights of our school results. The Math department is motivated to improve upon these results in this year’s assessment. Well done...Jean Vanier!! GRADE 10 AND 11 SKILLED TRADE PRESENTATION th On Monday, October 25 , the Grade 10 Careers and Civics classes, as well as Grade 11 students, had the opportunity to listen to a guest speaker from Skills Canada. During this session, students were able to learn about career opportunities in the Skilled Trades. In addition, students were encouraged to consider this very viable option as a possible pathway after high school. GRADE 10 CAREER DAY On Wednesday, November 3rd the Grade 10 students participated in the 2nd Annual Jean Vanier Career Day. Students spent the first part of the morning listening to guest speakers talk about post-secondary destinations: namely, University, College and Apprenticeship programs. After this, Grade 10 students had the opportunity to take part in five different workshops hosted by guest speakers from a variety of fields. In these workshops, students were able to find out more about a particular career and learn about the requirements for pursuing that career in the future. Ms. Wong, Mrs. Mongillo, and Mr. Marrin would like to thank administration, teachers and students for their continued support of this day. JV READS—EVERY WEDNESDAY! In support of Literacy, 15 minutes are dedicated every Wednesday where everyone “Stops Talking and Reads”! Newspapers are provided for students during this time...or they can read their own books. THE SOCIAL NETWORK The Media Studies Class looks into many different forms of constantly changing media and how they affect our lives. Social media, like Facebook, has changed the way in which people communicate with each other. The Media Studies class will be taking a look at the impact of social media along with the differences between communication and meaningful interaction, along with the differences between “information” and “knowledge” this semester. In order to support this learning, our class along with Ms. Baptista’s Communication Technology class, went to the Empire Theatre at Elgin Mills for a private screening of The Social Network to gain a better understanding of Facebook’s origins and how it has evolved over a short period of time. The film was insightful, sparked much discussion in class, and was enjoyed by all. Mr. Gouveia On Wednesday, November 3rd the Grade 9 students participated in the annual Take Your Kid to Work Day, accompanying their parents, or friends of family to their places of employment. Close to 200 Grade nines took part in this day and had the opportunity to gain a glimpse of the world of work. The event proved to be a great success. Mrs. Mongillo would like to thank all Grade 9 parents and teachers for their support with this very important job shadowing initiative. ENGLISH DEPARTMENT Upcoming Events—Poetry in Motion In November, we will be introducing a special “Poetry in Motion” week. During this week, all students taking English this semester will have a chance to share their favourite lines of poetry with the rest of the students in the school by displaying them on posters throughout the halls of Vanier! Ms. Masterson, Department Head of English ENGLISH DEPARTMENT Resources All Jean Vanier students should have received copies of three books: The OSSLT Red Literacy Student Workbook, A Pocket Style Manual and Becoming Human by Jean Vanier. Literacy Across the Curriculum OSSLT Workbook •All Grade 9 and 10 Jean Vanier students have begun working in their OSSLT Red Literacy Workbooks. These workbooks will be used by all of the students in their various courses to help prepare them for writing the OSSLT. Our next Literacy Preparation Day is November 17. All students need their Red Books for the day. •This year, Grade 9 students will complete half of the exercises in the book, and the remaining half will be completed next year when they are in Grade 10. •Our Grade 10 students will be completing this workbook during first and second semester this year in preparation for the OSSLT Test in March 2011. A Pocket Style Manual •All students should have copies of this manual. It is a very important reference tool which our students will be using for all of their courses. Field Trips This semester, many of our students have had the opportunity to participate in some wonderful field trips. Macbeth : 12 October 2010 This semester's Grade 10 English students, accompanied by Mr. Gouveia, Ms. Mongillo, and Mr. Sorgini, attended a performance of Macbeth by The Classical Theatre Project, held at the Bathurst Street Theatre. The Classical Theatre Project is well known for creating wonderful educational experiences for students, and their unique productions afford students the opportunity to fully engage with and appreciate the fantastical world of Shakespeare. The students departed in the morning and had some time to have lunch in bustling downtown Toronto. At 1:00pm, they gathered in the Bathurst Street Theatre to view the play. The Grade 10’s witnessed nine actors play more than fifteen roles, create sound effects, and deliver a wonderful performance of one of Shakespeare's most popular tragedies. After the show, students had the opportunity to ask the actors questions during a Talk-Back session. The students learned more about the performance side of a Shakespearean play, which gave them a greater appreciation for how complex his stories actually are. Our Grade 10’s enjoyed the wonderful day and returned with new knowledge and new respect for one of literature's greatest contributors. Students in “Contemporary Aboriginal Voices” Journey to the Haliburton Forest Nature Reserve! 17 October 2010 On a sunny, beautiful fall day, our ten Contemporary Aboriginal Voices Grade 11 University class embarked on a three day foray into the Canadian wilderness. We drove for two and a half hours to the Haliburton Forest Nature Reserve to spend three days on a reading and wilderness retreat. While there, we enjoyed a hike through the Wild Woods Walk, a nature hike littered with environmentally friendly art displays, visited the Wolf Centre to learn about the politics of the pack, experienced the howling and barking of 108 sled dogs who are preparing for their winter runs and enjoyed an astronomy walk which culminated at the reserve’s observatory where we got to see the surface of the moon, a planetary nebula and stars in all of their glory. As though this were not enough, we were able to really experience the natural world as represented in the novel that the students are studying presently entitled Keeper’n Me by Ojibway writer, Richard Wagamese. Being surrounded by the tranquility and solitude of Lake MacDonald helped us all realize that we are but small pieces in this universe and that it is our responsibility and our privilege to experience this life alongside the natural world. Most importantly, students learned that they can actually survive without their cell phones and iPods after all! A wonderful time was had by all and after much journaling and photography, we re-entered the fast-paced world of the 21st century with changed hearts and new perspective. Hopefully, we can do it all over again next year with more students and some experienced senior leaders along for the ride! Ms. Bettio Romeo and Juliet: 1 November 2010 The students in the Grade 9 English classes of Mr. Gouveia, Ms. Masterson and Ms. Mauricio were able to witness the ever so popular William Shakespeare production of Romeo and Juliet. Performed by a group of professional actors at Central Commerce Collegiate in the heart of Toronto, the strong emotions were delivered with heart, energy and enthusiasm. With a simple set and modern costumes, the actors brought the teenage romance to life in front of our very eyes. Students laughed at the antics of the Nurse and Mercutio; while they watched the love between Romeo and Juliet unfold to its tragic end. The actors were available for a Talk-Back session, allowing students to ask questions about the production and the actors. Students were amazed to find out that the actors only had three weeks to rehearse and learn their lines – something none of the viewers would have expected! The production was fantastic and allowed students to study Shakespeare in a way like no other. Ms. Mauricio It has been a vibrant semester here at Jean Vanier. To start, 3 of our student leaders travelled to Montreal for six days to attend the Canadian Student Leadership Conference. These students gained an invaluable experience meeting other young student leaders from across the country, heard dynamic speakers and attended numerous workshops. We are confident that the conference enabled the development of these students’ leadership styles and enhanced their communication skills. In effect, upon their return, these students have trained other leaders in our school and ran workshops at the Horizon Conference, held on November 5th at Brother Andre. These leaders were not the only J V students in attendance at the Horizon Conference, 20 additional future J V leaders also attended. The theme of this conference was: “Stand Up, Speak Out” with the purpose to raise awareness about student bullying within our schools. The students were asked to “stand up and speak out” against taunting, violence, discrimination to ensure a safer school and community environment. The day started with a dynamic and high spirited tone which the students embraced. Our students were lucky to attend different workshops led by student leaders from other high schools across our board and listen to Anthony McLean’s message regarding the impact of “standing up and speaking out”. We are very lucky to have Anthony come and speak to the rest of the student body on Tuesday, November 16th. Muskoka Woods was another fabulous annual event. Grade 9 students together with 37 student leaders and staff advisors went up to Muskoka Woods on Sept. 29 – October 01. The purpose of this event was to build a sense of community within our grade 9 students who come from different elementary schools. The experience and memories that these students had through outdoor activities, games, and presentations will last a life time. This year we are proud to announce our first grade 9 council. The council named themselves the Junior Jaguar or better know as the “J J”. They are led by our two wonderful advisors: Ms. Campacci and Ms. Sanci. Their first activity is a fundraiser for “Missionaries of the Poor” that will take place on Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010. We are very proud of our grade 9 “J J’s” and we are looking forward to many more activities. Some of the highlights from our other fabulous councils: Arc Council: Student Council: Athletic Council: Environmental Council: ESP Council: Art Council: Thanksgiving Food Drive, The Vow of Silence, Remembrance Day Halloween week, Candy Cane sales, Semi-formal coming up in February for our Grade 11 students School Intramurals, Basketball Buy-In Timber Mill Park Clean Up (November 09) after school Bullying Prevention week (Nov. 15- 19), Drug and Alcohol Awareness week (Nov. 22- 26) Christmas Arts Night A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD The York Catholic District School Board is committed to creating and maintaining school environments in which students, staff, parents and others feel safe.
