SANTO STEFANO DI SESSANIO
The original medieval settlement, which dates
back to XIV century, is still well-preserved, and it
makes the village one of the most charming and
fascinating place of Abruzzo. The village, which is
one of the most beautiful in the whole of Italy,
presents a ring structure with a circular clocktower placed on the highest top.
Informations
La differenza si beve.
It is situated at an height of almost 1.500 m, and it’s the
castle of the highest altitude and the best preserved in
the whole of Italy. It was a privileged observation post
because of its elevation.
Today the village is best known to people because it has
often been a scenery for important cinematographic sets,
such as “The name of the Rose” and “Lady Hawk”.

generazioni, oggi la piccola Cantina Gentile diventa impresa
creando l’opportunità di trasmettere le stesse sensazioni che
ogni giorno proviamo vivendo, creando e amando gli splendidi
vigneti che solo questa terra è in grado di offrire.
It’s a wonderful fortified medieval village, situated in the Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti
della Laga. It rises to the south of Campo Imperatore, at an height of 1.345 m.
It has always based its economy on agriculture and sheep-farming and nowadays it preserves, for
what concerns the architecture of the village, the features of an ancient magnificence.

The plateau, situated at an height of 2.200 m, has
been called the “Small Tibet of Europe” and it stretches on the Massif of the Gran Sasso d’Italia’s slopes.
The tallest peak of this mountain group, the Corno
Grande, at 2.914 m, preserves the most Southern
glacier of the whole of Europe. The plateau became
famous thanks to Sergio Leone western movies.

In the beginning the village of Bussi was probably a rural district, belonged to the ancient
Rome. The denomination of Bussi is thought
to be due to the presence in the territory
of box-trees (deriving from the Latin word
“Buxus”), and it was called Bucsi at first and
then Bussi. Reliable news date back to 1092,
a period in which some buildings of the castle
of Bussi were owned by the Monastery of San
Benedetto in Perillis.
In 1265 the Cantelmo came from France to Italy with Carlo D’Angiò, the count of Provence, and in 1377
they bought the castle of Bussi from Niccolò Alunno D’Alife. Their reign lasted until 1579, when they
sold the castle to Pietro Pietropaoli, baron of Navelli. About 1600 the castle became property of Cosimo
de’ Medici, prince of Capestrano, who became the prince of the barony of Carapelle and of the land of
Bussi. As from 1700 the presence of master ceramists coming from Castelli started a successful artistic
season centred on the creation of particular pieces of ceramics.
The presence of argil along the Tirino river favoured the growth of many shops, which carried on their
activities until the first half of 1800. The most representative manufactured articles are kept in the
Museo delle Tradizioni Popolari, in Rome. Bussi became part of the Reign of the two Sicilies in 1743,
under the government of Carlo III di Borbone.
In 1860, along with the proclamation of the Reign of Italy, the bourbonist domination ended. With the
municipal deliberation of the 13th of August 1880, it was stated to add to the original name, Bussi, the
word “on the Tirino”, from the name of the river which crosses the territory.

At the half of the I century B.C., the emperor Claudio decided to realize a consular road to connect
the city of Rome to the middle Adriatic side.
The road, which crossed the Vestini territory, before reaching the Valeria also crossed the present
Navelli Plain and the Tirino Valley.
With all probability many of the sheep-tracks which, in the time of the transhumance ran through
the territory of the Campo Imperatore tableland until they reached the
hot plains in the Puglia region, corresponded with some tracts of the
Claudia Nova Way.
It’s in the Tirino Valley, along the bank of one of the most beautiful and
the most clean river in Europe, with its transparent and freezing water,
that the activities which characterized the economy until the beginning
of the XX century used to concentrate.
According to historical evidence is thought that nearby the river there
were markets which attracted farmers, artisans and fishermen from
every zone of the region.
The name appeared for the first time in 1284,
when Carlo I assigned some of the territories of Capestrano to Riccardo di Acquaviva.
Before that time the village was still concentrated downhill, settled nearby the sources of
Presciano and Capo d’Acqua. The name “Capestrano” could indeed derive from “caput presanum” or from “caput trium amnium”, that is to
say that it sprang up from three sources, namely Il Lago, Presciano and Capo d’Acqua. The village
was probably built by the inhabitants of Aufinum, which chose to live in these places to avoid the
barbaric raids. In the XIII century Capestrano was a feud belonged to Tolomeo di Raiano; afterwards
it became estate of the Durazzo dinasty, which ended in 1382, when the Castle was first sold to
Pietro Conte from Celano, and then to Antonio Piccolomini. In 1579 Capestrano and all its estates
became property of Francesco I de’ Medici, and later it became part of the Reign of Naples.
The Piccolomini Castle
The Castle, which stands in the middle of the village, dates back its origins to the half of the XV century, and it was named after the Piccolomini feudal family, which lived there for a long while. As from 1463 to
1579, in fact, they became Lords of Capestrano and they stated to sell
the Baronia di Carapelle and the Marchesato di Capestrano to Francesco I de’ Medici. During this reign the village was titled “city” and it
enjoyed many benefits and privileges. In 1860 it became property of
the Savoia and finally in 1946 it bacame estate of the Italian Republic.
The variety of stony coats of arms, some of which have been washed
away by the inclemency of the weather, and situated whether inside
the fortress or above the external walls, represents an indelible memory of the swinging passages
of power to take possession of the village. The Castle, enlarged by Antonio Piccolomini, presents a
quasi–trapezoidal plant, with three round based towers placed on the corners; instead the residence has the shape of an “L”, with the major side turned towards the square. Inside the structure
stands a prismatic tower placed with an irregular orientation compared to the rest of the building,
from which it’s possible to admire a suggesting view above the whole Valley crossed by the Tirino
river; on the left side one can admire the impressive Gran Sasso massif.
From the former entrance, which overlooks the characteristic barrack square, it’s easy to reach the
second interior court through stony stairs; here it’s possible to admire the polygonal well, with its
two impressive capitals, and the wide flight of steps which leads upstairs. So far, above the doorways, the circular towers, and the walls of this Castle, are visible some defensive elements, such as
embraures, bartizans, harquebusiers, loopholes and trapdoors.
The Church of Santa Maria della Pace
It was built in 1643 on the ruins of the pre-existent Church of Santa Maria della Macchia, which is
thought to be big enough to have a nave and two aisles and more than one altar.
It became cathedral church in 1754 and on its back it was placed the churchyard. Inside the nave “in
cornu Epistolae” were placed the two chapels of the Virgin Mary and of Sant’Antonio.
During the building of this church it was strictly observed the principle of symmetry, to ensure a
respondence between the right and the left navy; the vault of the central navy presents a frescoes
cycle. It was only in 1837 that a church tower, a choir, a sacristy and a baptismal font were added
to the Church.
The Franciscan Monastery of San Giovanni
Giovanni da Capestrano
begun the building of the
monastery nearby the historic centre, in 1447. Under
the Bourbons’ protection
the religious structure became a Royal Monastery.
Inside it there are a library
and a museum, in which one can admire the objects belonged to the Saint: the cloak, the stick, the
sandals and the Bible written on parchment, which goes back to the XV century. Preserved through
centuries, there are also church ornaments of great value: silver chalices and a processional cross
made in 1700, the silver bust of the Saint given to the monastery from Cosimo III De’ Medici, and
a painting probably realized about 1740/41 by Vincenzo Damini, a Venetian painter. In 1742 the
present library was finished; it consisted of more than 4000 books, including both volumes and
manuscripts, and it was the biggest library of the Franciscan Order in the Abruzzo region. The most
important document preserved up to now is a Papal
bull, written by Urban IV on 18 April 1262.
The Monastery of San Pietro ad Oratorium
The existence of the Monastery of San Pietro ad Oratorium in the Trite Valley is certified in the decree written
in 779 and included in the “Chronicon Vulturnense”.
The Church is thought to be founded from Desiderio,
the last Longobard king, in 756, according to what is
written on the lintel of the front door, that is “A REGE
DESIDERIO FUNDATA MILLENO CENTENO RENOVATA”. The “Chronicon Vulturnense”, drawn-up by the
monk Giovanni in the XII century, certifies that the Church already existed in 752, when it was confirmed by the Pope Stefano II to the Benedictine monks of San Vincenzo al Volturno, of which San
Pietro was competence. Probably Desiderio granted some property to the Monastery of San Vincenzo

The Tirino river, one of the most beautiful of the whole Europe, represents the main element which
characterizes the valley landscape. Its waters flow slowly among the so called “padure” and “cannavine” which enrich the biodiversity of these precious natural settings with their traditional cultivations.
Alongside the river there are some remnants of huge forests which once covered the whole area,
where black poplars and white willows are dominant, while nearby the river, among the thick
marshy canes, emerge the ashen poplars.
Thanks to the crystal-clear water which let the light filter for many meters below the surface of the
water, the riverbed is thickly populated by water celery which once was used both as human food
or animal forage. The low temperature of the water, of about 11° C, allows a high oxygenation and
so the life of the fario trout in this habitat. Other than this
fish there’s another interesting species, the autochthonous
crayfish (Astro potamobhius pallipers), which once lived
in abundance in these places, while today it’s reduced to
small groups in few areas of the river.
Alongside the river, among the branches of the ashen
poplars, swim the field-mice; moreover, small families of
coots can be seen among the tossing canes. Another important faunal presence is represented by a small bird, called little grebe.
On the surface of the water it’s easy to see the flight of silver dragonflies, such as the characteristic
mercury dragonfly.
The Tirino river also represents an ideal habitat for a huge variety
of migratory birds, such as the reed warbler and the “cannareccione”, which migrate from the South of the Sahara to nidificate
in these places.
Moreover, many birds as dun-birds, tufted ducks, black-necked
grebes and whistle ducks, migrate from northern Europe to
spent winter in the Tirino Valley. At sunset it’s also possible to see numerous colonies of ashen herons, roosted upon the tall white willows.
The river is seen as a source of life even for those species of mammals, such as roe deers, deers and
wild boars, which run down from the surrounding woods to water at night.
The best ways to explore and live this fantastic river could be romantic horse-back and cycle rides or
relaxing and exciting excursions on canoe.

The ancient Aufinum (OFENA)
The only mention of Aufinum known in the classic literary source documents is made by Plinio il Vecchio, who
refers to the main Vestini centres: “Vestinorum Angulani,
Pennenses, Peltuinates quibus iunguntur Aufinates Cismontani”. The ancient city, which was also a see, before
being destroyed had exercised a wide control on the
whole territory, and its area was crossed by the lay-out of
the Claudia Nova Way, which had to connect Rome to the
Middle Adriatic Sea. In ancient times, in this area, there
were Vestini settlements, so that Ofena is likely to be the
Aufinum belonged to this people. It underwent the domination of Alessandro Sforza in 1474 and then
of Enea Silvio Piccolomini in 1478; later it passed to his daughter Costanza, who sold it to the Marquisate of Capestrano. Francesco I de’ Medici bought it in 1579, staying in the family until 1743, when it
passed to Carlo di Borbone. Today Ofena presents the characteristics of a medieval village: the typical
walls and the baronial palace.
The Church of San Pietro in Criptis
The church is situated not so far from the historic centre of the village. Its name suggests the presence
of some XII century crypts, which preserve precious and rare fourteenth-century frescoes. The top floor
is characterized by the presence of two mullioned windows with two lights and a Romanesque style
portal, which was realized in 1196 by Silvestro, a master and sculptor born in Ofena.
The Monastery of San Francesco
The Monastery, historically proved by documents since XIV century, belongs since 1385 to the “amiternina” custody of the province of Penne. On 25 of July 1449 San Giovanni da Capestrano went there
and entered into a contract with some builders to built the Monastery of Capestrano; moreover in 1478
the Duke of Calabria decreed that it should have a yearly income. The structure presents the typical distribution of the monastic complexes, adding some variations and enlargements, and it still preserves
expressive wall frescoes.

In the hearth of Abruzzo, between the
provinces of L’Aquila and Pescara, and
in the territory included among Ofena, Capestrano and Bussi sul Tirino, is
situated the Tirino Valley, ran through
by the homonymous river.
Situated on the south-eastern side of
the Gran Sasso, at an height of about
350 m, the valley forms, between
Ofena and Capestrano, a wide sag
which originate from a tectonic depression in the ground, in which accumulated thick lacustrine
sediments. In the south it narrows, until it reaches the Tremonti gorge, nearby Bussi Officine. In
1995 most of the valley was included in the territory of the Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti
della Laga. Afterwards, with the protection program “Natura 2000” it was still further protected,
so that the sources site and the first stretch of the Tirino river took part to the so called Special
Protection Zones.
The most characteristic aspect of the Valley is represented by the Tirino river, described as one of
the most beautiful rivers in Europe because of its transparent and fresh water and of its luxuriant
riparian vegetation. As a matter of fact, there were originally three main sources: Capo d’Acqua, Il
Lago and Presciano, situated at a low altitude (Capo d’Acqua at 373 metres above sea level, Il Lago
at 337 metres above sea level, Presciano at 329 metres above sea level).
The name Tirino originally comes from the Greek word “Tritano”, meaning “three sources” or “river
with three heads”. The sources are situated nearby Capestrano which is thought to take its name
from the expression “caput trium amniuim”, or rather at the head of three sources.
Other than the naturalistic beauties it’s easy to find both historical and artistic places of interest,
such as the archaeological site of Capestrano, where in 1934 came to light the famous “Warrior”, or
the villages of Bussi, Capestrano and Ofena, rich of fifteenth-century buildings (such as the Castello
Duchi di Cantelmo or the Castello Piccolomini), or the well-known Churches of San Pietro ad Oratorium and of Santa Maria di Cartignano and the Monastery of San Francesco.
al Volturno in the Trite Valley and he took part to the enlargement of the cell
of San Pietro ad Oratorium, but surely he was not its founder. The structure
underwent many reconstructions during 1100, which probably restored the
stylistic decorations, inspired by the Church of San Liberatore a Majella, more
than the effective structural reconstruction. The interior still preserves the
majestic thirteenth-century ciborium, and along the apsidal side a fresco
which imitates the Byzantine style and represents Jesus Christ on the throne
with the twenty-four evangelists. The facade of the church keeps the famous
“magic square”, with the inscription “SATOR
AREPO TENET OPERA ROTAS”.
The Warrior of Capestrano
The most important artistic representation from the Archaic Italic era is
to be found in the large limestone statue of the Warrior, discovered in a
necropolis area near Capestrano in 1934. Now preserved in the Museo
Nazionale di Antichità in Chieti, this sculpture, along with other finds,
have made it possible to reconstruct some of the stylistic features of
this people. Standing erect and looking forwards, with his arms folded
across his breast, the polychrome statue of the Warrior, carved in the round and dating from the
mid-VI century B.C., recalls the form of an anthropomorphic funerary stele. No anatomical details of
the body are revealed clearly, while the armour covering the Warrior is meticulously represented in
its details: sword, lance and breastplate held on by a criss-cross of belts and the fibula. On his head
sits a striking head-dress with a large circular brim giving him a severe aspect, at the same time
increasing the volume of the statue, which seems to unbalance the figure, since the sculptor felt the
need to brace it with two side supports and a large plinth on one of the two supports is inscribed,
from top to bottom: “My appearance was carved by Aninis for King Nevius Pompuledius”.

The Tirino Valley
The Church of Santa Maria di Cartignano
The ruins of the Church of Santa Maria di Cartignano offer, to the eyes of the visitors, one of the
most suggesting views of the Tirino Valley. At the
beginning of XI century it arose as a country church
belonged to the Abbazia di Montecassino, but, in
1065, it became a monastery with a resident
monk community. After about three centuries, the
Church, abandoned by the inhabitants of Cassino,
became a rural building of San Liberatore a Majella. Today, thanks to digging and restoration works, the building has been partially rebuilt and it presents
a rectangular plant with nave and double aisles. In the center of the face there’s a rose window, made up
of eight small columns placed as the radius of a circle. In the interior it has been found a fresco painted by
Armanino da Modena, now kept in the Museo Nazionale de L’Aquila. Inside the walls of the church have
been discovered some blocks of local stones carved with epigraph to be traced back to roman age.
The Church of Sant’Anna, San Lorenzo e San Biagio
The Church of Sant’Anna is a small church built in all probability about 1500, because its fresco decorations show inscriptions which date back to 1556. It is situated on the Marmoreo bridge, at the right of the
Tirino river, near the Park Visitor’s Centre of the Tirino river, and it presents an aisles structure. One of the
most important and the most antique Church is that of San Lorenzo, which preserves on its face some
sculptures of the IX century; inside it there are the statue of Santa Rita and many finds of the Church of
Santa Maria di Loreto, first built in the old town center, and later pull down in 1940. The Church of San
Biagio is situated on the top of the town, and it preserves the holy relic of the patron saint, the protector of
the throat. It also keeps many other statues, such as that of the Dead Christ, Sant’Antonio and San Rocco.
Torre di Sutrium
It is a sighting tower, which dates its origins back to the High Middle Age, and it’s situated in the site
of San Rocco, in the south-west of the built-up area. It has an unusual structure with a triangular
plant, and it is thought to be not much elevated; only the ruins of a remote past is what remains
today. Together with the Torre di Montegualtieri, in the province of Teramo, it represents a unique
example in the territory of the Abruzzo region.
Duchi di Cantelmo Castle
The origins of this castle are to be dated back to IX century. It’s the most beautiful monument in
town and it presents a rectangular plant, with the main bodies contained around an elegant courtyard; in the middle of this courtyard there are a large well and a stair of stone, which leads upstairs,
where it is possible to admire pictures painted on canvas, fireplaces and many other nobiliary objects. Northwards a high rhomboidal tower with brackets rises from the castle.

Lago di Capodacqua
It’s a path of about 35 km, without
significant technical difficulties on
dirt road.
It can be travelled over in every
season of the year and, in the first
stretch, it winds along the Tirino
Valley on the left piedmont stretch
of the river, until it reaches San
Silvestro, along the ancient way
Pescopiano.
Leaving from the Park Visitor’s Centre of the Tirino river you start your walk towards the left; once you are past the sports facilities you
leave the town centre at your back and you go on for a short uphill road, and then you turn left
towards the dirt path of Pescopiano, an ancient stretch of the Claudia Nova Way.
The path winds, for a great extent, along a thick oak row, into a natural and very attracting scenery
which is set off in spring by the huge variety
of inflorescence other than the scent of the
vegetation. 5,5 km from the start of the
itinerary, without leaving the dirt road, you
reach a crossroads with a fountain in the
middle; if you turn left you continue walking
for 400 m and once past a farm you take the
first path on the right.
After 1 km you cross a secondary asphalt
road, then you continue walking on the dirt
path for 700 m, until you reach the small village of San Martino.
Keeping the right you go on until you reach Capo d’Acqua, where it’s possible to admire the homonymous lake, the biggest source of the Tirino river.
Keeping on your right, once you are past the picnic area, you reach another crossroads: now you can
choose to circumnavigate the lake, turning right after the cement shed, until you go back to the
Blue Path of the River, or to continue on the Orange Path by a short uphill stretch, leaving the lake
at your left and reaching the small village of Capo d’Acqua (by the Green Path of the Holm-Oaks).
Going down from the inhabited centre, before a small bridge you turn right by a dirt road which
leads you to the ancient San Silvestro centre, which
still preserves the typical ruins of a rural architecture.
Now you can decide to go on by the dirt road or to go
up along the cycle path; both of them will lead you to
the inhabited centre of Ofena.
Going down by a stretch made up of the so called
“sampietrini” (a particular irregular paving), you will
turn right towards the wine road, which crosses the
Ofena plain rich in the cultivation of grapes for the fine production of Montepulciano and Cerasuolo
d’Abruzzo wines (in the well-known wineries of the valley: Gentile and Cataldi Madonna).
After reaching a small fountain you can choose among two different paths: turning right you will
get the Purple Path of the Olive Grove, while turning left, walking along an asphalt road and passing Cataldi Madonna winery, you will come back nearby the Lake through the Blue Path of the
River.
Climbing the route from Capo d’Acqua you turn left and
take an asphalt road, immersed into the maquis among
olive grove and holm-oaks, which will be walked uphill
until you reach Ofena. After reaching the Convento dei
Cappuccini and then the school of the town, you walk
down the “sampietrini” path at your left where you will
admire some of the typical productions of this area.
Before climbing the road which leads to the cemetery,
if you turn right you will walk along the path called “the
wine route”. Walking down the valley you will have a
double option, to walk the Purple Path of the Olive
Grove or the Blue Path of the River.

After getting onto the provincial road, you walk for 400
m, and you climb at your left
for a short stretch, situated
nearby the crossroads before
the bridge; afterwards you
turn left and you walk along
an asphalt road nearby the
Chianchiarelli zone.
After crossing the ruins of the
small village of Cirvana you
keep your right and get onto
the highway 17.
Walking along it for 200 m
and reaching the crossroads for Carapelle Calvisio, you turn right and if you proceed under the flyover you enter into the westerly side of the Tirino Valley, in Santa Pelagia district.
It’s necessary to be trained enough to walk along the Red Path of the Hill to climb up to Capestrano;
to walk this route you have to turn right at a crossroads situated in Caruso district.

Leaving from the Park Visitor’s
Centre of the Tirino River, you
will walk along a path without
significant technical difficulties,
ideal for a “family cycle ride”.
Once you reach the crossroads,
leaving the football pitch at your
back, you turn left skirting the
Tirino River and you can admire
the meandering course of the
river which flows slowly across
the valley among gardens and
cultivations. In Cirichiello district, after passing the picnic area and after crossing the flyover of the
highway, the road becomes dirt; walking along this route you pass the fish farm and you reach the
Church of San Pietro ad Oratorium.
This is a magnificent monument which dates back its origins
to the X century and preserves inside it the famous “magic
square”; the faint light is suffused and it gives an air of mystery and mysticism. The XIII century ciborium with majolica
inserts and the precious frescoes painted in the XII century
apse are absolutely splendid. From this place you can admire
one of the few stretches of running water of the Tirino River.
Continuing the cycle ride on the Blue Path, you reach the San Martino bridge, a place of a unique
beauty (the point from which it’s possible to start an exciting excursion on canoe, guided by expert
tour operators of the Environmental Education Centre “Il Bosso”), where you can stop for a short
break for the youngest cyclists.
Once you cross the bridge, you
cycle for almost 300 m until you
reach the crossroads; if you turn
right, you will easily reach the
Presciano Sources. Remember
that you have already covered a
distance of 9 km.
You go on cycling and after
reaching an old church, now
become Park Visitor’s Centre of
Gran Sasso and Laga Mountains
in the area of Capestrano, you turn right and once you are past the bridge, situated on the right
branch of the Tirino River (called Raio), you turn right into a dirt route which leads you to the Lake of
Capo d’Acqua, after crossing the high Tirino Valley. Throughout this path you can admire the Tirino
River in all its beauty, especially for what concerns the characteristic species of flora and fauna.
Once you are in front of the cement shed you can choose to keep your right and cycle along the
Orange Path of the Oaks, or to go on until the first crossroads nearby Capo d’Acqua and then turning
left to cycle on the asphalt road after crossing the flyover. And now, if you turn right, after covering
a distance of about 2 km you will easily reach the Presciano Sources. From this point you continue
cycling until you reach, after 1 km, the provincial road which connects Capestrano to Bussi sul Tirino.
Walking down at your left, without getting onto the provincial road, you arrive nearby San Martino,
the point from which it’s possible to start an exciting excursion on canoe, guided by expert tour
operators of the Environmental Education Centre “Il Bosso”. Shortly afterwards, from San Martino
bridge, you turn right on the dirt road which will lead you towards Bussi.

Walking along the Red Path, you will cycle a beautiful and interesting downhill dirt route, not technically difficult but which requires to be careful because of its slope.
The road ends after reaching the enchanting village of Capestrano. From the main square you walk
down until you leave the town at your back, then you turn left at the first crossroads and walk
along the downhill path which leads to the right side sources of the Tirino river. This is Presciano
district, where you can relax drinking the fresh and transparent water gushing from the numerous
fountains.
From Presciano, walking along the Blue Path of the River for almost 1 km, you reach the provincial
road which descends towards Bussi sul Tirino.
At the crossroads, without getting onto the provincial road, you descend on your left until you reach
the place called San Martino, the point from which it’s possible to start an exciting excursion on
canoe, guided by expert tour operators of the Environmental Education Centre “Il Bosso”.
After San Martino bridge, you will turn right in the opposite direction of the dirt Blue Path of the
River to walk towards Bussi sul Tirino.
