» THE CONTEST / IL CONCORSO
Daily life in the city captured in street photography: instant images, capable of telling a
story woven into the urban fabric.
An international stage on which to get noticed for professional and amateur photographers.
A series of ”travelling” exhibits.
URBAN is an international contest of street photography promoted by dotART. dotART is a cultural association based in Trieste, Italy, with years of experience working in the field of artistic
photography and the visual arts.
URBAN looks for talent and quality both among
professional and amateur photographers, offering them an international stage from which to
get noticed. The top rated photos in the competition will take part in series of “travelling”
photography exhibits. Since 2011 URBAN exhibits were held in Trieste, Poland (Krakow), Hungary (Budapest and Miskolc), Sumy (Hungary)
and Colombia (Bucaramanga).
URBAN 2014 edition has seen more than 1,000
photos and 100 portfolios for nearly 500 participants all around the world. In addition to Italy:
USA, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam,
Serbia, Poland and others. A prize pool of over
€ 3,000, including publication of the photos in
prestigious photographic portals including the
Photography section of LaStampa.it and italian
photography online magazine Fotografia.it.
La vita quotidiana della città vista attraverso la street photography: immagini immediate,
in grado di raccontare una storia ambientata nel tessuto urbano.
Un palcoscenico internazionale da cui farsi notare per fotografi professionisti e amatoriali.

URBAN è un concorso internazionale di street
photography promosso da dotART, associazione
culturale di Trieste che opera da anni nel campo
della fotografia artistica e delle arti visive.
URBAN ricerca talento e qualità sia tra i fotografi professionisti che amatoriali, offrendo loro un
palcoscenico internazionale da cui farsi notare.
Le migliori foto classificate del concorso URBAN
entrano infatti a far parte di un circuito di mostre fotografiche ”itineranti”. Dal 2011 sono state
allestite mostre di URBAN a Trieste, in Polonia
(Cracovia), Ungheria (Budapest e Miskolc), Lettonia (Riga), Sumy (Ungheria) e Bucaramanga (Colombia).

L’edizione 2014 del concorso ha visto più di 1.000
foto e 100 portfolio in gara per quasi 500 partecipanti da 50 nazioni. Oltre all’Italia: Gran Bretagna,
Stati Uniti, Australia, Giappone, Corea del Sud,
Vietnam, Serbia, Polonia, Ungheria e molti altri.

Over the years, URBAN’s jury has featured numerous personalities from the world of art
and photography. Italian hip hop singer Frankie Hi-NRG MC, illustrator Massimo Giacon,
graphic designer Michael Samuel and many others have chosen to get involved in this
international event.

Superbly talented photographer and photo manipulator,
who shoot amazing photographs with humour and creativity.
Inez Baturo [Poland]
Artist photographer, translator, gallerist, publisher and
editor. She is one of the organizers of FotoArtFestival,
and co-owner of the Baturo Publishing House since 1991.
Alexandra Sophie [France]
21 years old French fashion and illustration photographer. She is occasionally working with Vogue UK, Vogue
US, Elle international as well as fashion brands such as
Bottega Veneta.
Liesa Cole [U.S.A.]
Studio photographer based in Birmingham, Alabama.
Her work in commercial advertising and Fine Art photography has gained recognition worldwide.
Edoardo Agresti [Italy]
He is an official photographer of the Nikon Professional
Team, national level coordinator of the Nikon School Travel and member of the prestigious american association
Wedding Photojournalistic.
Giancarlo Torresani [Italy]
Director of the Teaching Department of FIAF, cultural
operator in visual communication, critic and portfolioreader expert.
Gonzaga Manso [Spain]
Young photographer and film director based in Madrid.
Self-taught, he soon began working in advertising for
clients like Pepsi, Smart, Movistar and Sony, as well as
for agencies like Contrapunto BBDO, DDB and McCann
Erickson.
Martin Vrabko [Slovakia]
President of Association of Professional Photographers
of Slovakia. Master QEP (Federation of European Photographers).
Massimiliano Morlotti [Italy]
One of the greatest wedding photographers in Italy, his
fine art work is exhibited in numerous art expositions,
contemporary art galleries, museums, private and public
art collections across the country.
Raimondo Musolino [Italy]
BFI - Honored in Meritorious Photography Italian, cultural operator in photography, artistic director of FotoArte
Festival, an event with some exhibitions of the greatest
Italian photographers like Gardin, Lucas, Battaglia and
Scianna.
Grzegorz Kosmala [Poland]
Creator, publisher and editor-in-chief of online photo
publications: doc! photo magazine monthly devoted to
contemporary documentary photography and contra
doc! quarterly focused on fine art pictures.
Ronald Koster [Holland]
Creative Photographer & Digital Imager. For his independent work he ”picks” his models largely from the streets.
His photographs are mostly perfected not by an endless
postprocessing but first and foremost by a clever use of
flash.
Gregory Panayiotou [Cyprus]
Artist Photographer AFIAP, he is also member of Cyprus
Photographic Society and Photographic Society of America.
Zbigniew Podsiadło [Poland]
Photographer since 1974, with a career filled with important prizes in Poland, like ZPAF and FASFWP medals and
awards, and the 150th Photography Anniversary Medal.
Ilona Pulkstene [Latvia]
There is no photographic genre that has not tempted her.
She has photographed everything, in color or black and
white, in studio and outdoors, with a preference for black
and white portraits.

Massimiliano Morlotti [Italia]
Tra i maggiori fotografi di matrimonio in Italia, ha esposto in prestigiose mostre come alla Triennale di Milano o
alla Biennale di Lisbona e collaborato con diverse gallerie
d’arte.

There is more to photography than just realism. As a photographer I love to create
images that are intense and convey a sense of beauty. In a technical sense the
structural principles of photography are very true, but if you do not make your work
personal, then to me you are completely missing the point of why you should be out
there with a camera.
Nella fotografia c’è più che semplice realismo. Come fotografo mi piace creare
immagini intense che trasmettano un senso di bellezza. A livello tecnico, i principi
strutturali della fotografia sono veri, ma se non ci aggiungi il tuo tocco personale,
secondo me viene a mancare completamente il motivo per cui dovresti startene là
fuori con una macchina fotografica.

Of street photography I like the fact that it represents moments that are absolutely
natural, spontaneous and not artificial. Such moments are often trivial and last a
fraction of a second before they disappear.

naturali, non costruiti, spontanei, spesso banali e che durano una frazione di secondo
e poi spariscono.

My main inspiration is Trent Parke, my absolute favorite photographer. Obviously
there is not only him but many other great masters such as Lee Friedlander,
Anders Petersen, Mark Cohen, Robert Frank. I also draw inspiration from “non
photographers”, like Quentin Tarantino, Queen and many painters and artists in
general.
La mia principale ispirazione è Trent Parke, il mio fotografo preferito in assoluto.
Ovviamente non c’è solo lui, ma molti altri grandi maestri come Lee Friedlander,
Anders Petersen, Mark Cohen, Robert Frank. Traggo ispirazione anche da “non
fotografi”, come Quentin Tarantino, i Queen e molti pittori e artisti in genere.

COLOR IN THE CITY
Capture in an image the city’s chromatic games,
the predominance of a particular color, colorful
elements that stand out in the monotony of the
surrounding environment, a sky that is tinged
with an unusual shade: a section for those who
love the color and the particular effects that can
create in a photograph.
Cogliere in un’immagine della città giochi
cromatici, la predominanza di un particolare
colore, elementi colorati che spiccano nella
monotonia dell’ambiente circostante, un cielo
che si tinge di una tonalità insolita: una sezione
per chi ama il colore e i particolari effetti che può
creare in una fotografia.
Photography for me it’s more than passion, it’s a lifestyle.
Più che passione, la fotografia per me è uno stile di vita.

WATER
The basic element of life comes in many forms
in our eyes, combined with the surrounding
environment and interacting with people and
animals, in the city and into nature. The water
offers an infinite number of artistic ideas to
photographers.
L’elemento base della vita si presenta in
molteplici forme ai nostri occhi, combinandosi
con l’ambiente circostante e interagendo con
persone e animali, in città e nella natura. L’acqua
offre infinti spunti artistici ai fotografi.
I am not much for the “decisive moment”, I am sincerely more intrigued by unclear
pictures with that bit of confusion which forces you to discover the shot very
gradually. When I speak of confusion, however, I must add another term that might
seem contrasting: balance. In the photograph I am looking for balance. A balanced
confusion.
Non sono molto per il “momento decisivo”, sinceramente m’intrigano certe
fotografie poco chiare, con quel pizzico di confusione che ti costringe a scoprire
lo scatto piano piano. Quando parlo di confusione però devo aggiungere un altro
termine apparentemente in contrasto: equilibrio. Nella fotografia cerco l’equilibrio, la
confusione equililbrata.

It is essential to exercise your eyes to the composition. To have the perseverance,
the determination and, perhaps, in some cases even stubbornness to wait for
the right moment and the ideal situations to materialize to get the shot you have
planned to do.
È fondamentale esercitare l’occhio alla composizione, avere la costanza, la
determinazione e, forse, in taluni casi anche l’ostinazione di attendere il momento
giusto che si concretizzino le situazioni ideali per ottenere lo scatto che hai progettato
di fare.

I always try to capture the emotion I felt at the moment of shooting and, in general,
the essence of the place. If the emotions that I felt at that moment can to be
transferred to who observes the image, then I have achieved my goal beyond the
mere aesthetics aspect.
Cerco di catturare per sempre l’emozione provata al momento dello scatto e, in
generale, l’essenza del luogo. Se le emozioni provate in quel momento riescono ad
essere trasferite a chi osserva l’immagine, allora ho raggiunto il mio scopo, al di là del
mero gusto estetico.

The technical tool does not interest me very much. I have shoot also without a
camera, just with the eye, brain, guts and soul.

For street photography one of the most important thing is to have quick reactions,
to see “the single image” in the busy scene and to be fast enough to capture it, as a
second after it usually disappears.
Nella street photography una delle cose più importanti è avere i riflessi rapidi per

What I love about street photography is that, unlike studio, architecture or landscape
photography, if in that moment you hadn’t been there, that picture would never
have existed. If you had chosen another street or if you had stopped to look at your
phone, such picture would never have existed. All this, somehow makes you feel like
a little special human being.
Quello che amo della Street Photography è che, a differenza della fotografia in studio,
di quella d’architettura o di quella paesaggistica, se in quel momento tu non ci fossi
stato, quella foto non sarebbe mai esistita. Se avessi scelto un’altra strada o ti fossi
fermato a guardare il cellulare, quella foto non sarebbe mai esistita. Tutto questo in
qualche modo ti fa sentire un essere umano un po’ speciale.

A photographer must have an innate passion for life and the world around him, he
has to be able to “look” beyond, know how to listen, read, and observe other people’s
work. He must possess a small camera and good shoes.
Un fotografo deve avere un’innata passione per la vita e per il mondo che lo circonda,
deve “guardare” oltre, saper ascoltare, leggere, e osservare il lavoro degli altri. Deve
possedere una piccola macchina fotografica e delle buone scarpe.

I like photographers who can take a nice clean photo without too many touch-ups
or modifications. My goal when photographing is to capture pure, raw and unaltered
moments.

In street photography I search for things of absolute simplicity, but yet not obvious.
A story, an emotion. I believe that a good photographer has a duty to interpret
reality with a creative outlook, original and full of that wonder that will make the
viewer go: ”I would never have thought of this”.
Nella street photography cerco cose di una semplicità assoluta ma, forse per questo,
per niente scontate. Una storia, un’emozione. Credo che il bravo fotografo abbia
il dovere di interpretare la realtà con sguardo creativo, originale e pieno di quello
stupore che fa dire a chi guarda: a me non sarebbe mai venuto in mente.

To be a relevant photographer, like any other art form, you require a good
combination of: self-confidence, intuition, connectivity, curiosity, persistence,
motivation, imagination, flexibility and productive capacity. It is difficult to carry all
these talents, but with at least some of them you can expect good results.
Per essere un fotografo degno di nota serve una buona combinazione di fiducia in se
stessi, intuizione, connettività, curiosità, persistenza, motivazione, immaginazione,
flessibilità e capacità produttiva, come in qualsiasi altra forma d’arte. È difficile avere
tutti questi talenti, ma alcuni di essi possono portare a buoni risultati.
