Writing for choirs divided into different sections, composers developed the notion of multi-layered polyphonic music. These beautiful buildings resonated with a rich new sound experience, culminating in the early 17th-century in the great sacred music of Monteverdi. Using the world-famous choir of St John’s College Cambridge, formed of young boys and exceptionally gifted student musicians, this initiative sets out to prove a daring hypothesis: that the subtleties of acoustics were somehow understood by Venetian architects more than 300 years ago. Venice is full of contrasting building designs: there are mosaic domes, gothic vaults, flat painted ceilings and carved wooden choir stalls, all with different acoustic properties. But what does that mean about how music was performed and what it sounded like? Where were the singers placed? And when the same pieces were performed in other churches, did they sound different? This project follows the choir of St John’s and the acoustic technicians as they explore the relationship between sound and space in the sacred music of Venice half a millennium ago. Spectators are warmly invited to all the sessions, which will include music by Adrian Willaert, Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli, Claudio Monteverdi, Palestrina and others. Admission is free, except for the two concerts on 10th and 13th April, for which tickets may be obtained at the door up to one hour before each concert.
