The creation of an aesthetics of sustainability is indispensable if we are to provide a new language, in order to express concepts associated with recycling and reuse. The transition to sustainably certainly calls for a systemic change of our way to live. Solar power stations rather than thermal and nuclear ones, railway mobility instead of cars, implosive urban transformations in the place of urban sprawls. But if this process towards a human habitat that is compatible with the resources on the planet is to be fully accomplished, we cannot only focus on great systems; we must also look to small changes that may be more influential the everyday reality of everyone. Actions that may be small in comparison to the IV design focus essay overall change, leaps ahead that enable us to catch a glimpse of the tomorrow’s world. In the awareness that this new world will not only have completely different contents, life styles and economic systems, but also new forms that will visualize and concretize the great advances that will be realized. The creation of an aesthetics of sustainability is indispensable if we are to provide a new language, in order to express concepts associated with recycling and reuse. The research done on a figurative style peculiar to sustainability is finally taking on substance, emancipating itself from a solely political use and relegation to a niche where recycling is used from a purely symbolical and essentially uninfluential viewpoint. There are already many examples of this achievement; as a whole they form a kind of alternative to the design process of the industrial economy, which expresses itself as an instrument for the planning and control of univocal, largely predictable results. With the cannibalism associated with the reuse of materials and parts, on the contrary, the final phase of the construction process may be placed within a wide range of possibilities, whose end result is determined by a series of self-generating combinatory effects. One thing leads to another and the sense of this process of regeneration, capable of extending, potentially infinitely, the life of the material, involves design in the different scales from product to architecture. It is certainly something that has already taken form in relation to the sense of the industrial product in Twentieth-century artistic research, from the objet trouvé of the historical avant-gardes to Arman’s accumulations. Perhaps the habit of using casual fragments obtained by looting ancient architectures has, since the beginning of time, served to get solid building materials without having to excavate them; but this has also been a way to cannibalize antiquity and stay in touch with a distant greatness, even in the darkest moments of the Middle Ages. Today, however, the use of fragments takes on a different diffusion and meaning. The solemnity of the past has been replaced by the lightness of irony. Let us take a concrete example from our own days: Freitag. The company legend recounts that the brothers Markus and Daniel Freitag, both graphic designers, were looking for a practical messenger bag that could protect their drawings from rain in short urban travels. Inspired by the highway scenario visible from their apartment on the main transit axis of Zurich, they had the intuition of reusing the brightly coloured tarpaulins taken from old trucks. These tarpaulins are normally thrown away, something that entails an expensive refuse processing; but to Freitag they represent a precious raw material that they began to use to realize their products. The bag was completed, using the same recycling principles, by using old safety belts from cars for the shoulder strap and old air chambers from bicycles for the edges. What seemed to be a simple game has turned into a system of objects that, using tarpaulins with different colours, writings and cuts, only creates one-offs. More specifically, the production of Freitag bags entails five phases. First of all the company obtains used truck tarpaulins made of a special kind of PVC, also contacting logistics firms all over Europe. The large tarpaulins are then cut up at a plant, reduced to more manageable pieces for transport, cleaned, flattened and cut by hand with a cutter. The single pieces are sent to workshops located in various countries where they are sewn by hand, and the finished product eventually returns to Zurich where it is controlled, photographed and packaged, and then distributed all over the world. The idea of the Freitag product may thus be summarized in a few key principles: reuse, colour, uniqueness. All of which are reflected by the company’s flag store in Zurich. Built in 2006, it is a tower formed of 17 used, rusty containers, stacked on top of one another as if to resemble a storage area; a perfect corporate architecture an excellent testimonial of the brand values and, at the same time, an opportunity for a highly experimental architecture. But there are other examples of designers oriented in the same direction, that of a new aesthetics of sustainability. The fashion house Martin Margiela is an important one; ever since it was founded it has been famous for its universal use of white in every shade, which adorns everything produced by the designer. In addition to the prevailing monochromatism, the atelier is also distinguished by a particular taste in restyling, rebuilding and replicating old clothes found in flea markets all over the world. The “Replica” line, whose declared aim is to recreate old styles in homage to fashion history, is dedicated to this activity. The “Artisanal” line is also linked to the same concept; it consists of one-off pieces made wholly by hand, that gives a new life to broken plates, wigs, tennis shoes, old wedding and baptizing dresses… Also in this case the dedication to the subject of recycling is also witnessed by the commercial premises of the brand. To visit a Margiela boutique is like exploring an immense flea market covered in every shade of white. One immediately comes to think of places that have been vacated in a hurry by their inhabitants, where there are still traces of furniture and architecture elements recovered from old houses and shops. VI design focus essay camouflage materici material camouflage text by Ali Filippini pelle, cartone, alluminio, carta... oggetti ben disegnati, per una nuova educazione al consumo leather, cardboard, aluminium, paper... objects that are well designed, to learn more about new consumer habits Bricola Venezia, Davide Riva, Maurizio Riva, Riva 1920. A new nomenclature is emerging from the product catalogues of the last few years, and should be learnt by heart, in order to replace industrial materials and processes that may be harmful to the environment with healthier behaviours and “ingredients”, that we may use in the products of tomorrow. Designers are getting familiar with them and, more importantly, manufacturers are using them. For instance, it is by now more than ten years ago since the Moscardino, by now a design icon (the forkspoon that is the “symbol” of new Italian design) created by Iacchetti and Ragni was presented in the MaterBi version, made in biosoluble corn starch plastic; today, in the year two thousand and twelve, one of the world’s leading lamp producers, the Italian Flos, has chosen an innovative material for a new version of the Miss Sissy by Starck, namely PHAs bioplastic, that is biodegradable in water. It looks like plastic, which has played such an important role in design, is bound to change as a result of this dedication to make materials more environmentally friendly. And it is anything but an isolated case, at least if we are speaking of polymers. In fact, as of last year Magis has (also in this case with a product designed by Starck) decided to invest in chairs made wholly of renewable materials; in this case fibres as bamboo, flax and hemp, combined with a mixture of wood discards and wax or fish glue. We must therefore also learn to recognize new materials. In fact, it is hard if not impossible to guess the “ingredients” also in another new chair, the Broom chair, which the American Emeco has presented at the Furniture Salon, and which is made chiefly of regenerated polypropylene with rests of wood fibre and recycled glass. Also kitchen tops may break with tradition and become more experimental, as witnessed by Key, a company from the Veneto region which has launched the artificial stone SWANSTONE®, a completely new, environmentally friendly material (made from aluminium silicate, ground and recycled glass in powder and a resin binder based on soy) which is so resistant to heat that it can be used as support for a ceramic induction cooker. Moreover, in this case the versatility of the material has made it possible to make this kitchen model, Inside, from a single block excavated from a diagonal fissure, characterized by minimalistic lines and a wide range of equipment and accessories. The attention to the materials also concerns their origin: this is the case of wood and its crafting, which must be as natural as possible. An emblematic example in this sense is the Japanese Karimoku New Standard, which obtains wood from the forests of the country for its products, designed by international names as Thomas Alonso, author of the new table with trestle legs. Another interesting example of a conscious use of wood is the approach adopted by Riva 1920, which continues the discourse of reuse introduced with the “le Briccole di Venezia” collection, this time in partnership with the winery of San Patrignano and no less than thirty designers, with a project presented at the last Eurocucina that centres on a creative recycling of the old wooden caskets that are routinely discarded by the community. It is, in the final analysis, a matter of the same philosophy as that is pursued, on the scale of the smallest and most ordinary objects, from table lamps to stationery cases, by Regenesi, a company which reinvents, produces and markets objects made from post-consumption recycling materials. It does so by employing the best talents in design in Italy and the rest of the world, following a path that may have been suggested by a whole genre of Italian design, (especially in the last ten years, as of Paolo Ulian, that is) with a product range made from various materials as leather, cardboard, aluminium, even paper, seeking to propose objects that are well designed, that may also be bought on line, where the customers may find all the technical specifications of the reused material and learn more about new consumer habits. Alessi’s adventure in lighting, a new field for the company, began a year ago in partnership with Foreverlamp. AlessiLux is a project with an entirely original approach focusing on the light bulb itself, both as the source of light and as an element of the décor in its own right, in which to express new idioms. All this is made possible by the new Led technologies which not only save on consumption, but offer amazing possibilities for design, permitting creation of light sources which are smaller and generate less heat. This year’s collection is expanded with three new models, including Ufo, a table lamp with rechargeable batteries which its designer Frederic Gooris describes as follows: “Holding a lit light bulb in your hand and walking freely through the night, lighting up every step... it seems impossible, but the idea is fascinating. We have even given them a name: Unidentified Flying Objects.” hemp werner aisslinger azienda Moroso (con BASF) anno realizzazione prodotto 2012 materiale fibre naturali insieme e resina acrilica a base d’acqua Acrodur dimensioni 750x710mm, H seduta 380mm, H schienale 700mm firm Moroso (with BASF) year of realization 2012 material natural fibres with Acrodur water-based acrylic resin dimensions 750x710mm, seat H 380mm, backrest H 700mm Hemp Chair di Werner Aisslinger è la prima sedia monoscocca realizzata in un nuovo materiale industriale a base di fibre naturali, un progetto sviluppato da Moroso in collaborazione con la società tedesca di prodotti chimici BASF. Werner Aisslinger’s Hemp Chair is the first chair to be built in a single block out of a new industrial material made from natural fibres, a project developed by Moroso in collaboration with German chemicals company BASF. Lightweight yet resistant, the stackable chair in a single bud-shaped block consists of a sheet made out of more than 75% hemp hot thermoformed in an ecological production process derived from the automotive industry. Hemp and kenaf, renewable raw materials, are compressed with a waterbased thermosetting binder to form an ecological composite which is lightweight yet extra-strong. Unlike conventional reactive resins, Basf’s Acrodur water-based acrylic resin does not release any organic substances such as phenols or formaldehyde during the reticulation process: the only product of the drying process is water. Moreover, the industrial process of compression printing ensures particularly easy modelling and permits low cost production of three-dimensional objects offering high mechanical resistance and very low specific weight. A collection of tabletop and freestanding suspension lamps, shadows created using mathematical principles, in two or three dimensions, with beautiful fine threads of light running through them. The inimitable folds that create the plastic shapes and solidity of Issey Miyake’s In-Ei lights are produced using an original technology created by Miyake. The project’s starting point is a recycled material with an interesting ability to diffuse light: a regenerated fibre made from Pet bottles created using new methods which save 40% over the energy consumption and CO2 emissions that would have been generated making new materials. The recycled material used to make them is more transparent to light than paper, and they hold their shape without any need for an internal frame: the folding process creates sufficiently solid statuary volumes which can then be remodelled without difficulty. They can be stored folded when not in use. The result is highly evocative forms which Artemide brings to life with Led light sources. mitesco michele de lucchi azienda Caimi Brevetti anno realizzazione prodotto 2012 materiale poliestere rivestito in Trevira CS® dimensioni 159/119/79x44mm, 119x90mm firm Caimi Brevetti year of realization 2012 material polyester covered with Trevira CS® dimensions 159/119/79x44mm, 119x90mm Design, elevate prestazioni tecniche e funzionalità, il tutto concepito nel più rigoroso rispetto dell’ambiente: il sistema brevettato Mitesco e la tecnologia Snowsound® sintetizzano le caratteristiche essenziali di tutti i progetti di Caimi Brevetti. Mies Van der Rohe disse ’less is more’, il meno è più. Giusto, ma perché scegliere? Con questa sedia noi possiamo dire “less and more”, meno e più insieme. Perché abbiamo deciso di fare meno – meno stile, meno design, meno materia prima, meno energia. E alla fine abbiamo ottenuto di più”. Intelligent materials and aesthetic design, in a product that systematically eliminates waste: out of Philippe Starck’s inexhaustible creativity and Emeco’s pioneering research into regenerated and recycled materials comes the Broom Chair, a chair made entirely out of Broom, a composite material which is completely new in this type of element, made from reconstituted polypropylene and wood scrap fibres. “A humble man starts cleaning the laboratory with a humble broom. And makes something magic out of a little dust. This is where the name Broom comes from“, explains Starck. The material is made from waste materials from sawmills and plastics factories, and cuts environmental impact three ways: less energy consumption, less waste and less carbon emissions. Starck adds: “Minimal elegance is produced out of the intelligence of nothingness. Mies Van der Rohe said ‘less is more‘; that’s right, but why should we have to choose? With this chair we can have both “less and more“. Because we have decided to do less – less style, less design, less raw materials, less energy. This activity involved the requalification of the old working-class district of Brunck in Ludwigshafen, to bring it back to life by means of a structured project able to combine high environmental and energysaving standards. BASF promoted a through transformation of the complex by creating dwellings featuring “Near-Zero Energy costs”, with a mix of buildings featuring energy consumption of 1, 3, 5 and 7 litres/m² per year. In particular, a “3-litre” house was designed, that is to say a prototype building that does not exceed a level of energy consumption of 30kWh/m² per year, thanks also to external insulation made of 30cm slabs of Neopor® on the outside walls and 60cm slabs on the roofing. Neopor® is an innovative latest-generation high-performance expandable polystyrene featuring an excellent heat-proofing performance, ensured by the presence of tiny graphite particles that absorb and reflect the infrared rays. In this way, the effect due to the radiation of heat is neutralised. Thanks to these features, the insulating capacity of this material is up to 20% better than conventional EPS, and the quantity of material needed is considerably less. prefalz silver metallizzato prefa progetto Resort di Forst (Lausitz) luogo Elsterheide OT Geierswalde, Germania progetto architettonico WIL | DESIGN, Kerstin Wilde anno di realizzazione 2012 project Resort di Forst (Lausitz) location Elsterheide OT Geierswalde, Germania architectural design WIL | DESIGN, Kerstin Wilde year of realization 2012 Un esempio di complementarietà fra natura e design, tecnologia e tradizione compositiva, azzardo linguistico e rispetto per l’ambiente: sulla riva meridionale del lago di Geierswald in Germania sono ancorate due case vacanza galleggianti. An example of the complementarity of nature and design, technology and compositional tradition, linguistic hazard and respect for the environment: two floating holiday homes anchored to the southern shore of Lake Geierswald in Germany. A bold compositional vocabulary characterised by an aluminium skin alternating with clear walls, which rise out of the large pool of water and relate immediately to their surroundings, with a weave designed to create continuous vibration of light and colour under changing conditions at different times of day and in different seasons. This half-arch structure had to be covered by a material which would offer the necessary flexibility during assembly, but also be capable of resisting the corrosive action of acidic water. The architects chose Prefalz roof and wall covering, a double seamed curved material offering excellent performance even under difficult conditions. The metallic silver colour perfectly matches the walls of the steel and glass building, and aluminium’s great flexibility and ease of workmanship permits construction of a longlasting, top quality roof. A milestone in sustainable architecture in Europe, a concrete application of Italcementi’s strategy for innovation and sustainability: designed in compliance with LEED standards, i.lab has obtained the Platinum certification, the highest energy and environment qualification. The research centre meets strict energy efficiency criteria which have allowed it to achieve up to 60% energy savings over conventional buildings thanks to the building methods adopted, the materials employed in the cladding and use of renewable energy sources. Alternative, recycled and/or locally produced materials were used to build i.lab. The foundation slabs and outer walls, for example, are made out of concrete containing recycled inert material from demolition sites and blast furnace by-products. The other parts of the building are made out of cement containing recycled slag and other materials 100% reclaimed from industrial processes. casaenergypiù wolf haus progetto CasaEnergyPiù progetto architettonico Wolf Haus anno di realizzazione 2012 project CasaEnergyPiù architectural design Wolf Haus year of realization 2012 Un’innovazione unica sia per il mercato edilizio che per quello energetico: CasaEnergyPiù di Wolf Haus è la prima abitazione che produce più energia di quanta ne consuma. The perfect combination of architecture and nature, a designer wellness hotel dominating the Austrian mountains of the Ötztal Valley built in accordance with the principles of building biology. Naturhotel Waldklause offers the perfect balance between the original traditional Tyrolean style and elements of modern art and design. The bio solutions adopted in the project include the soligno® construction system, inspired by the historic “stavkirker” (stave churches) of Scandinavia, using solid wood elements which fit together to construct wooden buildings without glue or nails. Exploiting the natural elasticity of wood, which is first dried and then restored to normal moisture conditions, the system combines a number of freestanding plywood blocks, each made up of solid wood rectangles joined in a herringbone pattern. Each layer is joined to the next by dowels, ensuring maximum stability and hermetic seal as their volumes expand under regular moisture conditions. sistema aquapanel® outdoor knauf progetto complesso residenziale luogo Parchitello Alta (BA) progetto architettonico arch. Waterproofing, insulating, ventilating and, why not, producing energy at the same time: the roof is the first structure human beings invented, the artifice which allowed them to cast down roots in a particular place, a simple system which has become complex as it has evolved over the centuries in terms of the forms, types and materials used. The gabled roof has always maintained an advantage over the flat roof, because of its performance, efficiency and aesthetic impact. Wierer is entirely concerned with the “roof system”, offering a range of mineral tiles solutions to meet all design requirements, fitting perfectly into Italian old town centres even while updating the image of terra cotta roof tiles in response to the requirements of contemporary architecture. The roof is a key element in any architectural construction. From the very first roofs and rudimentary constructions humans built, the roof has been indispensable to protect the cladding, an essential component for proper use of any space and a key element characterising a building’s image. The roof not only serves more and more complex functions, but brings aesthetic value with it which continues to play an equally important role, especially in Italy and in Europe. Wierer, the Monier Group company, a world leader in roofing, conducts ongoing research aimed at coming up with new solutions in ideal shapes and colours permitting roofs to fit into the country’s landscape, strongly characterised by the presence of gabled roofs. In its plant in Borgonato di Corte Franca (BS), set in the lovely landscape of Franciacorta, Wierer produces mineral tiles and all kinds of accessories (chimneys, ridge beams, skylight supports…). It now focuses primarily on the mineral tiles, they are obtained in a proceeding involving use of cement and oxides in the starting mix. Careful selection of raw materials and the suppliers who provide them (with strong local roots) and strict control of all components when they are received by the company are key aspects of the production process. Perfect characterisation and correct dosage of all the “ingredients” in the mix that will form the tiles determines the correspondence of each finished product to the required characteristics. Correct granulometric flow is essential. Sand, cement, iron oxides and water in the right proportions determine the basic mixture which, appropriately blended, is then estruded into metal moulds. The oxides in particular determine the colour of the mix. All Wierer tiles are solid-coloured, not only on the surface but all the way through. Different hues (which may be further emphasised by surface finishes) are appropriate for all aesthetic requirements and can adapt the new roof to all regional contexts: from the dark red hues of the roofs of Piedmont to the whites and yellows of Southern Italy. MIneral tiles are available in different shapes and sizes to meet the construction requirements typical of Italy’s rich, varied architectural heritage. Flat, linear shapes are perfect for modern buildings, while profiles with a more marked wave are perfect for historic old buildings. Oxides not only determine appearance, but can allow the tile to offer particular performance, as in the case of the new Auranox® ecological tile, which speeds up oxidation of pollutants thanks to the catalysing action of titanium dioxide in the surface finish, transforming them into inorganic salts which wash away with the rain. Thus the roof becomes more than just a protective layer, playing an active role improving the condition of our environment. The mix, put into a mould specially shaped according to the element to be produced, undergoes extrusion through a superior template made of strong steel which gives it the desired shape. While still soft and malleable, the tile coming out of the “drawing” process is taken on a conveyor belt to the finishing area, which may include several steps from application of special resins to create chromatic variations and special effects or, for instance, or application on the surface with micro concrete to give it a popular antique look. In addition to aesthetic appearance, the finishing layer helps improve the performance of the element, though its technical qualities and performance are largely determined by the unfinished element. The mineral tiles thus obtained is put into a curing chamber, in which Realizzazione e stoccaggio delle tegole minerali nello stabilimento di Borgonato, Brescia. Production and storage of mineral tiles in the Borgonato plant, Brescia. XXXII design focus factory controlled, constant temperature and humidity conditions are applied during the initial curing phase (about eight hours) with gradual absorption of excess water. The elements are then picked up by a mechanical robot and taken to the outdoor yard where the curing cycle is completed. Unlike roofs made of brick, which are no longer modified after firing, mineral tiles continue their curing process on the basis of atmospheric conditions and the amount of time spent outdoors. After 28 days the cycle is complete and the tiles are ready for be delivered. Every single tile is subjected to strict testing and inspection in the Wierer plant. From process controls such as checking correct dosage to specific tests of individual processes (forming and finishing), visual and tactile inspection to eliminate surface flaws or separate out rejected tiles, to statistical tests of the performance of the finished product (rain test, freeze/thaw cycles, breakage tests…). Mineral tiles guarantee much greater performance and resistance, especially when it comes to water absorption (a mineral tile absorbs not more than 3% of water), tensile strength (more than 300kg), resistance to freeze/thaw cycles (checked by chilling the tile to a temperature of -20°C and then heating it to +20°C). Wierer tiles are guaranteed for 30 years for waterproofness, resistance to freeze/ thaw cycles and tensile strength, for the levels of performance defined in standard UNI EN 490/491. The elements are very easy to install thanks to components which act like little “teeth” and supports on the back of the tile, but also thanks to the perfect dimensional stability and right angles of the surfaces. The vast selection of Wierer mineral tiles available meets all technical and architectural requirements: from the classic Doppia Romana to the flat, linear shape of Tegal, from Coppo di Francia to elegant Coppo di Grecia and Coppo del Borgo, the top tile in Wierer’s range, offering the perfect synthesis of technology and aesthetic refinement. For roofs with only a slight slope, Wierer has come up with Coppo Big, the only tile suitable for this kind of application, which can achieve a 10% slope thanks to a number of technical properties (such as the crosswise barrier against backflow which prevents water from rising to the surface). All kinds of products and all kinds of finishes, to customise your roof and help it fit into any context. The Granulata Plus surface, for instance, represents the evolution of the conventional granulated surface, but stands out from it for its greater durability and resistance to the weather. An innovative production process incorporates quartz granulate or slate for colouring slate in the finish on the tile to create a rough, compact surface that exercises a braking action on snow that falls on the roof. Applied to the profile of the Doppia Romana, it is available in a vast range of colours to fit perfectly into any setting. In addition to mineral tiles, the Wierer roofing system includes a vast range of components and accessories designed specifically to go together and to guarantee the right amount of waterproofing, insulation and ventilation of the roof: from thermal and acoustic insulation panels to transpiring membranes for waterproofing, from systems for preventing falling to photovoltaic and hot water production installations – all useful elements for construction of a roof that meets today’s energy conservation and eco-sustainability requirements. The matter of the climatic change The challenge of two degrees centigrade It is a known fact that all countries agree on one goal, namely to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere in order to limit the future increase of the global temperature to two degrees centigrade; beyond this level we would come to cross a critical threshold, of which consequences are universally recognized as catastrophic for the equilibrium of the global ecosystem. The question is so serious and has received so much attention worldwide that it has been the goal and subject of summits by the G20, the General Assembly of the UN and the Climate Conference held in Durban in South Africa, just to mention some of the latest international meetings (2011). According to the 4th IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) Report on the climatic change between 2030 and 2050, it will be necessary to reduce global emissions of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to a growing extent varying between 30-50%, in order to keep CO2 concentrations within safe levels by the end of the century and thus attain the goal, as ambitious as indispensable, of containing the global warming within the fixed limit of 2 degrees centigrade. To remain within this limit the global emissions of greenhouse gases should reach their maximum values in 2020 at the latest, with a reduction of at least 50% under 1990 by 2050, after which it should continue to decrease to keep concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere below a maximum level of 450 ppmv (parts per million by volume). To this end, considering the current demographic projections until 2050, the global average of emissions of greenhouse gases pro capita per year should be reduced to about two tons of CO2 equivalents. It is also necessary to assure a convergence of the national pro capita emissions between developed and emergent countries according to a strategy and methodology of behaviour that should consider the principle of “shared but differentiated responsibility”. If we to clarify matter compare the data through a column graph (see the image alongside the baseline) and compare the level of emissions that the current trend seems to suggest from now and into the next decades with reference to 2050 – Baseline 2050 –, with the expectations of change that has become necessary, sector by sector, with respect to the CO2 produced – Blue Map 2050 -, we obtain a plastic image of the change. In fact, the Blue Map 2050 column represents the expected scenario, which is a consequence of a global sustainable development in accordance with the report issued by the international energy agency on the technological prospects aimed at favouring economic growth using sustainable energy, that is to say energy obtained from renewable sources. This is the challenge and the main goal for the forthcoming years. BLUEmap 2050 In fact, economic growth, the industrialization of emergent countries and consequently the enormous and new demands for energy of some contexts represent the key, in relation to the production strategies implemented, towards understanding whether a sustainable future where the increase, or desired reduction, of global emissions do not influence the climate, thus creating a system that is dangerous to the future of the planet, is feasible. It is interesting to observe (see the linear graph on the next page) that the increase of greenhouse gas emissions on a global level originate from emergent economies, beginning precisely from China. If we compare the data for the United States of America with the great Asian colossus, we find that China has in the last decade surpassed its competitors across the ocean, and that it is today the country in the world with the highest emissions. Emissions in Western countries seem to decrease while China clearly appears to register an exponential development. The emissions are growing. According to the basic scenario of IEA ETP (International Energy Agency – Energy Technology Perspectives), the total demand for primary energy will continue to grow until 2050, reaching 23,268 million TOE (Tons of Oil Equivalent) with a proportionate increase of emissions, equivalent to about 130% over today. The graphic shows World CO2 energy-related emission will increase by 130% in 2050 On the right: CO2 emissions from fossil fuel burning USA/China. earth policy institute - www.earthpolicy.org 1800 1600 United States 1400 1200 1000 China 800 600 400 200 0 1950 1960 1970 1980 Rispetto a questi interrogativi sappiamo con certezza che esiste una sola risposta e quindi una sola via di uscita sostenibile, lavorare incessantemente nella direzione delle tecnologie a basse emissioni di carbonio. As a result of the economic growth, which has been slowed down but not interrupted by the recent economic-financial crisis, China and India will produce 51% of the incremental demand for primary energy worldwide if we consider the period of 2006-2030, while non-OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) will still be responsible for 87% of the increase of the energy demand even if their quota of the global demand for primary energy will increase from 51% to 62%. Emissions pro capita: an index of the energetic and social gap. Emissions pro capita in emergent and developing countries are much lower than in the developed world. In 2010 the figure for the United States was three times higher than the one for China, and 15 times higher than that of India. Emissions pro capita are a perceptible indicator of the energetic and social gap existing between the countries, in which context we may also consider the 2 billion persons in the developing part of the world who do not yet have access to energy. The energy demand will therefore increase most precisely in developing countries, to allow improved life conditions, something which should however be pursued and attained in a sustainable manner in order to avoid the aforesaid effects associated with climatic changes. Three crucial questions and issues have to be resolved: – How should we deal with the growing demand for energy of emergent economies, starting with China, India, Brazil? – How should we deal with the demand for energy without creating an uncontrolled increase of emissions? – How should we meet the demand for energy of China and the emergent countries and contain, or at least control, the emission of greenhouse gases? 3000 3500 1800 1600 1400 1200 1000 800 600 400 200 0 500 1000 1500 2000 2500 3000 3500 The graphics show the lighting of the world in 2000 (left) and the prevision for 2070 (right). We know there is only one answer to these questions, and therefore only one way out that is sustainable, namely to work incessantly to favour technologies characterized by low carbon emission. We must in other words concentrate all investments and efforts in terms of research and interventions worldwide to develop lowemission technologies, while being aware that the answer is not simple and univocal but variegated and complex; it is in other words a matter of implementing all those strategies which may, with infinitesimal and particular alterations with respect to the general conditions, produce an integral and different sum with respect to the global data. The technological challenge. – a “sharing of the burden” with reference to the attainment of the peak expected to be reached in 2020, considering the gap, existing and foreseen, in terms of intensity of carbon and pro capita values between the different countries and economies; – the “revolution” of energy technologies according to agreed and obligatory criteria in the form of international standards (for energy efficiency, sustainable biofuels, renewable performances…) and international regulations to convert the energy system to the use of “zero-emission” technologies (for instance by gradually ceasing to use existing infrastructures that are powered by fossil fuel and that are not equipped with technologies for the capture and storage of carbon dioxide); – national and international regulations with a commercial and fiscal impact that promotes investments in lowemission technologies and that prevent unfair competition and transfers of emissions of CO2; – creation and management of international financial mechanisms to promote energy security in developing countries. As may be easily understood, it is a matter of a new, complex and unprecedented challenge. No past international agreement has succeeded in simultaneously tackling all the aspects necessary to manage the climatic change, the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions produced by the different economies, and energy safety. To appreciate the difficulties associated with the question, it is sufficient to consider that strategies aimed at reducing the “carbon foot print” (CFP) still coexist, according to trends that show no signs of decreasing, with a continuous flow of investments in infrastructures powered by petrol and gas. How is it possible to plan and implement an exit strategy from fossil fuels when tens of billions of dollars are being spent every year to build new infrastructures based on oil, oil sand, natural gas and shale gas? How can we reconcile the prospects of a long-term operation of these infrastructures with the peak of emissions predicted for the year 2020? A European-Chinese platform for reduction of emissions A shared European strategy aimed at attaining the goals set for 2050 has been defined during the Durban Summit (December 2011) in order to verify the possibility to adopt measures and rules in order to promote a “decarbonizing” of the economy in such a way as to both sustain the goals of growth and economic development and at the same time pursue the goals of the reduction of emissions. In this perspective, Europe may share the programmed trajectory and the verification of the strategic and methodological with China with the intention of building a ‘global platform’ for the innovation and diffusion of reduced-emission technology, in view of the fact that it is precisely Europe and China that are making the greatest investments in terms of use and incentivation of technologies that make it possible to reduce carbon emissions. In 2011 a new record was set for worldwide investments in “clean” energies, that is to say energies produced by non-fossil fuels. A total of 260 billion dollars were invested, which represents a 5% increase over 2010 and is five times higher than the amount invested in 2004, i.e. 53.6 billion dollars. All this enable us to look at the future with optimism, especially because the figure for 2011 has been registered in a year in which the world economy as a whole has faced serious difficulties, and also the sector of “clean energies” has been especially affected by the crisis with considerable pressure on the manufacturers’ profit margins, followed by a drastic drop in the share values of some major corporations, which have also suffered the effects of the cuts of subsidies by the European governments and the reduced credits available from leading banks. Subdivision of investments in renewable-source energy production in 2011 by typology. The type of investment that has registered the highest amount of funds aimed at backing projects in the “clean energy” sector mainly concerns interventions associated with public services, which has registered a substantial increase, reaching a figure of 145.6 billion dollars invested in 2011, which is about 5.07% higher than the total amount registered in 2010, i.e. 138.3 billion dollars. emissions (Gt C02) 70 CCS industry and transformation (9%) CCS power generation (10%) BLUE map emissions 62Gt 60 nuclear (6%) renewables (21%) 50 power generation efficiency and fuel swit end use fuel switching (11%) 40 end use electricity efficiency (12%) end use fuel efficiency (24%) 30 20 BLUE map emissions 14Gt 10 WEO 2007 450 ppm case ETP 2008 analysis 0 Key technologies for reducing gobal CO2 emissions between 2005 and 2050. 2040 2045 2050 The second category in order of economic importance concerns funds provided for a diffused installation of renewable-energy technologies, especially photovoltaic panels which have mainly been installed on roofs; the absolute values registered show an increase in total investments from 60.4 billion dollars in 2010 to 73.8 billion in 2011. The third in this special hit list of economic merit is the sector of technologies that make it possible to save energy, which comprises smart grids, energy storage, optimized and advanced transports; these sectors show significant results that may be valued as more than 19.2 billion for 2011. The performance of investments in solar energy technologies Total investments in the installation of solar energy technologies for the direct production of energy and heated water have reached an amount of 136.6 billion dollars in 2011, i.e. almost twice the resources dedicated to wind energy that only reach 74.9 billion, which represents a drop of 17% as compared to the previous year. The performance of the solar sector deserves particular attention, because if we consider that the price of photovoltaic elements has dropped by almost 50% in 2011, with prices that are 75% lower than they were only three years ago, it means that the same investment makes it possible to install very large and constantly increasing quantities, both in terms of square metres and, consequently, in terms of energy produced. The volume of photovoltaic installations has increased at a much higher rate than other energy sources precisely because the competitiveness of this technology is reaching, and in some cases overtaking, performances that could previously only be achieved with other production methods. The menace of the climatic change and the necessity of an overall adaptation of the systems of prevention. In the last decade many regions and countries have been affected by extreme events in the form of natural catastrophes that have entailed immense economic costs and the loss of thousands of human lives: the floods in Pakistan, Western China, India and Europe and the exceptional heat waves registered in the Eastern United States and in parts of Africa, Asia and Russia, that have led to unprecedented draughts and fires. On a local level, the occurrence of different events shortly after one another, especially in adjacent areas, may aggravate the accumulated effects to the point of causing domino-effect consequences that could turn into a catastrophe of a global scale. Such extreme meteorological and climatic events could be the result of chain effects generated by perturbations that may be tiny as such, but are nevertheless capable of altering the state of the system in quantitative terms. The term “critical point” is normally used to indicate a threshold beyond which the slightest perturbation may have serious consequences; the latter could be, and many believe that they are, caused also by a senseless and uncontrolled human activity. And the critical points may not be all that far away. In fact, the glaciers of the Arctic Ocean are thawing at an impressive rate, much faster than expected; if they were to disappear, something they have been on the way to do, constantly and inexorably, for some decades, and not return, the climate of the northern hemisphere would change drastically. In fact, the ice crust seems to disintegrate very rapidly (with an increase of the levels of the oceans that could reach as much as 1-2 meters per century) in the presence of an average temperature increase of * 1,5 ºC. The tundra and the permafrost are warming up and thawing, and these changes could lead to the emission of CO2 and methane gas that would in their turn further accelerate the general process of climatic change. The acidification of the oceans, due to the dissolution of some of the excess CO2 in the atmosphere, would cause damages to corals and other marine creatures that form shells or skeletons from CaCO3. Conclusioni. The draughts and floods clearly show that extreme events can give rise to numerous effects: a shortage of food and water, loss of cultivated areas, a devastation of urbanized coastlines, migrations, regional conflicts, fragile political systems in some regions of the world. The foreseen climatic change will seriously aggravate the already minimal life standards of many countries in Asia, Africa and the Middle East, causing diffused political and social instability. According to the Secretary of the UN (2009), the manysided menace represented by the climatic change should be dealt with by developing contextual adaptive measures (preventive strategies) and offering international assistance in case of extreme events. Unfortunately, nothing has been done in this direction so far, even if we must recognize that these goals can only be pursued through a direct and coordinated involvement of the international community. Environmental prospects of OECD on the horizon of 2050. To take immediate action would be a rational decision both from an environmental viewpoint and an economic one. If countries implement measures without delay, there is still a possibility that the global emissions of greenhouse gases may peak before 2020 and that the increase of the average world temperature will not exceed 2 °C. However, it would seem appropriate to also ask oneself what could be the consequences of an immediate decision to limit the concentrations of greenhouse gases to 450 ppm (parts per million) by fixing a price, and thus a cost, for polluting emissions in order to meet the established goal not to exceed the threshold for global warming. We may call this prospect “Scenario 450”, an initiative that would certainly reduce the average economic growth by an average of 0.2% per year, with a cost that could be quantified as approximately 5.5% of the global GNP in 2050. However, this cost would be negligible when compared to those that could be produced by inaction, which might represent figures and percentages that can be estimated as 14% of the average pro capital consumption worldwide. Moreover, the costs of measures in favour of the climate may be overestimated, because they do not take into account the advantages that a mitigated climate would produce not only in terms of environmental benefits but also of directly economic ones. But unless more ambitious decisions are implemented without delay, the window of opportunities will close. Decisions that are made today on a level of global investments will determine what infrastructures will be used in the years and decades to come, while the environmental consequences of the investments that are made in high-emission structures today will, as pointed out, cause lasting repercussions on the climate, the environment, and on the economic and social conditions of future generations. Conclusions. The costs associated with dealing with the effects of the climatic changes produced by human activities and by the consumption of energy produced from fossil fuels is are much higher than the costs of the investments needed to reduce the emissions produced by traditional energy sources. However, it is certain that we are going through a difficult international crisis, which is above all affecting the European countries and the USA, we should therefore establish whether we want to get out of the crisis by consolidating old technologies or whether we on the contrary want to invest in a better tomorrow, taking an economic risk. To choose the former path would mark us as losers because we are unable to sustain an economic growth based on traditional technologies because they are not competitive and cannot be so in the long run. We therefore have only one opportunity: to invest in the future through the Green Economy. 17 editoriale editorial Prospettive ambientali dell’OCSE all’orizzonte del 2050.
