A metà tra documentario e fiction, il film
racconta il viaggio via terra di due giovani
cugini, rifugiati afgani, da Peshawar, una
città pakistana vicina alla frontiera, verso
Londra. Un percorso nelle mani dei mercanti di uomini, estremo e tragico, in cui
è difficile individuare il limite tra finzione
e realtà, attraverso l’Iran, la Turchia e poi
in traghetto verso Trieste e l’Europa. Il
film usa la voce fuori campo e i veri
campi profughi (compreso il famigerato
Sangatte). I due cugini recitano nella propria lingua (Pashtu e Farsi) e il film non è
doppiato, con una scelta che è anche uno
stratagemma per rappresentare la loro
presenza estranea e l’impossibilità a farsi
capire. “All’interno del mondo c’è un altro
mondo”. L’idea di realizzare Cose di questo
mondo, ottenuto girando centinaia di ore
in digitale e senza illuminazione artificiale,
lasciando ampio spazio all’improvvisazione dei suoi non attori, è nata prima della
caduta delle torri gemelle, quando nel
giugno del 2000, cinquantotto cinesi
morirono chiusi dentro un camion in un
disperato tentativo di fuga clandestina.
With the boundaries between documentary and fiction constantly blurred, the film
shows the desperate journey of two Afghanis migrants, the young cousins Jamal
and Enayat, smuggled form Peshawar, on
the Pakistan-Afghnistan border, to London.
The two boys find themselves at the mercy
of the people-smugglers who make their
living out of others’ misery, as they pass
Iran, Turkey, Italy, France. In This World is
styled as a fictional documentary, using
voice over narration and real refugees and
locations (including the now infamous Sangatte camp). The cousins speak their own
language, the movie is released in Pashtu
and Farsi with subtitles, a choice to stress
their displacement and the uneasiness of
communication. “There is a world inside
the world”. The film, shot on digital video
with hundreds of hours of footage and
built on two engrossing performances from
the non-professional leads, was conceived
before the events of September 11th which
have given it an additional resonance,
when, June 2000, 58 Chinese migrants died
inside the back of a lorry while they were
desperately trying to run away.
Nato a Blackburn nel 1961, Winterbottom
si è laureato a Oxford e ha studiato cinematografia a Bristol e Londra. Ha diretto
due documentari su Ingmar Bergman
e alcuni sceneggiati televisivi tra i quali
ha avuto grande successo Family, girato
per la BBC. I primi riconoscimenti li ha
ottenuti grazie a Butterfly Kisses e a Go
Now, entrambi del 1995. Poi, nel 1996,
Jude, adattamento da Jude the Oscure di
Thomas Hardy. Nel 1997 ha girato Welcome to Sarajevo. Dopo I Want You (1998)
Winterbottom ha diretto uno dei suoi film
di maggiore successo Wonderland (1999),
dello stesso anno è With or Without You.
Dopo The Claim (2000) nel 2002 dirige 24
Hour Party People e In This World.
Born in Blackburn on 1961, Winterbottom
earned a degree at Oxford and received film
training in Bristol and London. He directed
two documentaries about Ingmar Bergman
and a few television series, most notably
the acclaimed BBC drama Familia (1994).
Michael Winterbottom first earned recognition with Butterfly Kisses (1995) the same
year he directed Go Now. Then Jude, his
1996 adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s Jude
the Obscure. In 1997 he directed Welcone
to Sarajevo (1997). After making I Want
You (1998), Winterbottom directed one
of his most successful films, Wonderland
(1999). That same year, he released With
or Without You. After The Claim (2000) in
2002 he directed 24 Hour Party People and
In This World.
