Teams in UEFA’s two main club
competitions shared more than
€1.1bn in participation and performance-related revenue in 2013/14,
with nearly €904m alone for the 32
UEFA Champions League group contenders.
Each club was entitled to a minimum payment for participation in
the competition. Additionally, performance bonuses were paid for
every win or draw in the group stage
and each knockout round reached,
while monies from the market pool
were divided according to the proportional value of the national TV
market allocated to each individual
club, among other factors.
Unsurprisingly, eventual winners
Real Madrid CF secured the highest
payment from the UEFA Champions
League, their €57.4m including the
standard €8.6m participation bonus,
more than €20.5m from the market pool and
over €28m in performance bonuses, including
€10.5m for their final victory.
By contrast, the second highest earners prior
to deductions were Paris Saint-Germain, who
exited in the quarter-finals but were due to
receive €54.4m, including €33.9m from the
market pool as only two French clubs played in
the group stage and the other, Olympique de
Marseille, departed without a point. With more
competition for the Spanish market pool share,
Club Atlético de Madrid totalled just over
€50m, which included the highest group stage
performance bonus of €5.5m (€1m per win
and €0.5m per draw).
Also receiving more than €40m were
Manchester United FC, Juventus, FC Bayern
München, Chelsea FC and FC Barcelona. Their
payments were boosted by the knockout round
performance bonuses: €3.5m for playing in the
last 16, €3.9m for the quarter-finals, €4.9m
for the semis, and €6.5m for reaching the final
– or €10.5m for winning it.

OVER €1 BILLION DISTRIBUTED TO CLUBS
winners Sevilla FC, who received over €14.6m,
nearly €4m more than any club in 2012/13.
Sevilla’s total was made up of a €1.3m
participation bonus, more than €5m from the
market pool and over €8m in performance
monies, including €5m for winning the final.
Runners-up SL Benfica played in the UEFA
Champions League group stage, for which they
gained more than €15.3m, before adding over
€5.2m for their UEFA Europa League run. Most
of that total was in performance payments. By
contrast Juventus – who joined the competition
at the round of 32 with Benfica – took home
more than €7m from their run to the semifinals, over €5m of which was from the market
pool for Italy, taking their season’s earnings
from both competitions to more than €50m.
Even those who did not perform so strongly
did well, with no club receiving under the
€12.2m received by RSC Anderlecht. Even
those teams that did not progress past the
three qualifying rounds were rewarded with
fixed sums, with extra solidarity bonuses for
national champions that missed the play-offs.
Even the clubs who had fallen from the UEFA
Europa League before the likes of Juventus and
Benfica joined were rewarded. Wigan Athletic
FC, from England’s second tier, ended their
debut European campaign in the group stage,
and yet made €3,8m. Knockout contenders
FC Salzburg and Tottenham Hotspur FC both
gained €1.6m alone for winning all six of their
group games, with bonuses for taking first
place: clubs received €200,000 per win,
€100,000 per draw, €400,000 for finishing
top and €200,000 for coming second.
The system for the UEFA Europa League is
similar, though the sums available are lower,
the total pot of €209m including a contribution
from the UEFA Champions League revenue
pool. The rewards were certainly there for
Even the lowest payment was nearly €1.5m
to GNK Dinamo Zagreb, that sum topped by
FC Shakhter Karagandy, the first team from
Kazakhstan to play in a major UEFA club
competition group stage. ●
