JUNE 2010
A WORD FROM PASTOR JACK…
Why Worship Matters
As the personnel committee assumes the very important task of finding new leadership for our music ministry,
allow me to emphasize the importance of worship at Quaker Gap…
1. Worship matters to us because it matters to God. Worship is the atmosphere in which God is most comfortable. Whenever prophets and apostles have been given glimpses of God’s throne, there have always been worshipping angels present. While some people like to adorn their living space with plants, photographs, and pillows; God chooses to surround Himself with worship. According to Psalm 22:3, God inhabits the praises of His
people.
2. Worship matters to us because God deserves our praise. Worship is our opportunity to communicate to our
God how awesome He is. Jesus said that if His people refused to worship, the rocks would cry out. We should
raise our voices so that the chorus of rocks will never be tempted to exalt His name in our absence.
3. Worship matters to us because we were created to worship God. You might think you were created to be a
housewife, a teacher, a banker, or a computer programmer – but that would be secondary to your true purpose.
Everything you do, whether it is cleaning house, teaching, counting cash, or writing computer code should be
done in order to bring glory to God. We are instructed by the word of God (Colossians 3:17) to do everything –
word and deed – in the name of Jesus. Psalm 34:1 encourages blessings and praise to the Lord to continually be
in our mouth. As followers of Jesus, worship is our way of life.
4. Worship matters to us because the enemy hates it. Satan would have a hard time stomaching a church service
at Quaker Gap. Nothing irks the Prince of Darkness more than lovers of God lifting their voices in unified
praise to the One who won the victory on the cross. King Jehoshaphat of Judah once led an army in victory
against his enemies – but rather than stationing archers or warriors at the front of the army, he chose singers.
Seriously. Read 2 Chronicles 20 if you don’t believe me. A choir led the army into battle singing the lyrics “Give
thanks to the Lord for his steadfast love endures forever.” When the army arrived at the scene – it was already
over. God secured the victory without Judah’s army even engaging in battle. Next time you face a spiritual battle – sing one of the praise songs you’ve learned in worship at the Gap. You will be surprised how quickly the
enemy tucks tail and flees.
5. Worship matters to us because it draws us together. God loves unity. Unity is the one thing Jesus prayed about
concerning the church before He ascended to heaven. When the Kingdom of God sticks together in Jesus’ name
– we are a powerful force for good in this world. Its amazing how men and women from diverse backgrounds
can come together and find unity when they lift their voices together in praise, foreshadowing heaven. The very
act of singing a praise song publicly unites the voices, minds, and hearts of those participating, centering them
in the Lord.
6. Worship matters to us because it reminds us that God loves us. When we praise the Lord, we rehearse His
goodness to us. We are taken back to the promises of God, and the joy of our salvation. The Psalmist put it this
way, “Oh my soul, bless God, don’t forget a single blessing!” (Psalm 103:2 MSG)
7. Worship matters to us because it certainly beats the alternative. Isaiah contrasted the “garment of praise” with
the “spirit of despair.” (Isaiah 61:3) You can decide for yourself which of the two would look best on you. As for
me, despair doesn’t fit. I choose the garment of praise.
For these reasons and many more, worship matters. Please be in prayer for the personnel committee as we
search for the Music Minister of God’s choosing, and when given the opportunity this month – sing out!

Sunday Luncheon
Ladies and girls,
don’t forget about our ladies and youth girls luncheon this month. Due to Father’s Day, we will be meeting on the fourth Sunday in June. Join us after church
on Sunday, June 27th, at the home of Darshan Hartgrove for our next lunch date. Ladies, please bring a
dish to share along with your spirit of fun and fellowship. Girls, come hungry and bring your friends. See
Kassie Brown or Darshan Hartgrove if need transportation or directions. Mark your calendars for the 3rd Sunday of each month for a ladies and youth girls potluck
luncheon.
We are asking all the ladies of the church to
open themselves up to our young women as prayer
partners, leadership examples, and friends that they
can turn to. Please prayerfully consider how you, as a
mature daughter of Christ, can offer your support and
encouragement to our young ladies.

Please note that there
will be a Deacons’ Meeting on
Sunday, June 6th at 4:00 PM.
All active deacons are asked to attend these important meetings.

“Soaking up the Son” at
Vacation Bible School – Coming soon!!
Kids, get your sunglasses, beach towels, and sunscreen
ready as you head to the beach at Quaker Gap this summer! Coming
July 26-30 our youth will be your life guards at Vacation Bible School
You will be “Soaking up the Son” by our very own Quaker Gap Beach.
We are excited that our youth group will be planning and leading our
VBS this year, and they have some exciting things planned for you.
Each night you will experience a visit to the beach here in our own
church. As you learn what it takes to prepare yourselves for that fun
trip, you will also be learning what it takes to prepare yourselves as
Christians in the world. You will study the scriptures and find out
what it means to put on the full armor of God as you prepare to live in
this world and be an example to others.
Children K-6 grade are invited to be a part of this exciting
week. Groups will be divided up based on grade level and will gather
at 6 PM each night in the sanctuary for a time of worship, singing, and
skits. From there, the groups will rotate through the various activities
such as Bible Story, Crafts, Recreation, and Snack Time. Your life
guard youth leaders will guide you from place to place as you learn
about preparing your heart, mind, and body to serve God. On Friday
night, all parents, grandparents, etc. are invited to our closing presentation where our children will show what they have experienced (and
learned!!) during the week.
Early signup sheets will be available in the bulletin soon. Our
youth will be leading all of the VBS activities, but adults who wish to
assist are urged to contact Daniel Parker or Scott Hinson. We could
use adult volunteers specifically to help with photography and providing/serving the food for the snacks each night. We hope to see
you all by the beach for a great week of VBS at Quaker Gap!!
