E i nostri giovani, a loro volta all’estero? ROMA. EU needs unity and solidarity to defeat terrorism and to face an increasingly uncertain future place on the evening of July 14 in Nice, it is clear that the political will of the socalled European community to take the necessary measures, is non- existent. Just like the economic crisis caused by the US bubble of 2008, as well as for the problems caused by immigration and terrorism, EU lacks in decisiveness and consistency of purpose, while nationalism, selfishness and radicalism are insurgent. For Italy in particular, one very urgent question concerns the immigration. Millions of people are running away from war, terrorism, racism, genocide, and from destitution as well, due to drought, flood, and environmental neglect. Increasingly massive landings occur on the Mediterranean coasts. The journey towards the north of thousands of human beings has created in our country the scandalous block to the Brenner Pass and the riots at the border with France, near Ventimiglia, the Liguria town which is located less than 40 km from Nice, the capital of the French Riviera which proved to be, after Brussels, another hotbed for the Isis fanatics. Furthermore, while the same handful of votes in Austria has given a positive signal, the leave vote in Great Britain is creating large economic imbalances within the EU. As a result, the immigration file, which should regulate and redistribute equitably the famous quotes, has been stuck under the protocols binder. Meanwhile, Italy’s economic accounts denounce a growing number of homeless and jobless, thus forcing, among other things, many young people to go abroad, ROME. Last June, the M5S (5 Stars Movement) was the only political party successfully voted at the local elections, a clear statement of the dissatisfaction towards the Italian government in general. Besides the longing for honesty, transparency and decision-making at the local level, there is the spectre of terrorism ever closer, now in the heart of Europe. Following the attack that took 9 to become immigrant too. Italy is showing to the world that she is a nation full of goodwill people, capable of enormous sacrifices in the name of solidarity. It is true that Italy uses the indispensable European financial aid, but it is clear that it is not enough, if one just thinks of the enormous commitment of the brave and tireless Italian Navy. There are many forces and positive institutions in our country. Unluckily, they are devalued by examples of corruption, by episodes of mafia and by a prevailing selfishness. Citizens want a less bureaucratic government, less cronyism, less favouritism, less quarrels within the political parties. Citizens want the government to pay more attention to the harsh reality of a country that is no longer dreaming, or living just of sunny weather, clean air and blue skies! The example of Premier Renzi, sandwiched between two inner fires of his own democratic party, hurts, and only serves to push back the foreign investors. As for the Italian young people who have no access to the Erasmus program or who cannot rely on family’s support, if they want to learn the language of business and commerce, they must make their way in the immense London’s melting pot, living in hostels and serving as pizza makers, waiters or domestic helps. In fact, our government is planning a decree ensuring a concrete financial aid to those who want to go to work - attention, to seriously work - throughout the EU and also in England, given the free fall of the pound, nowadays almost equal to the euro. SPECIAL PEOPLE Rome Mayor Virginia aggi R in defense of the Roman “Res publica” (and beyond…) di Erika CANNOLETTA [email protected] 12 13 SPECIAL PEOPLE 14 Sotto, una ricostruzione del Portico D’Ottavia A reconstrution of the Octavia’s Porch. ROME. Before describing the woman as an influential member of the M5S (the Italian party called “5 Stars Movement”) we chose to make up for our readers a fantastic portrait of Raggi’s “characteristics”, the youngest candidate to be elected mayor of Rome and the first woman to hold that post. Young and combative, Raggi got several “nomen omen”. First, it looks like her success was written in the “stars”! Let’s start from her last name. Raggi (Rays) recalls the five tips of the stars painted by children, that have 5 “beams”... as to her first name, Virginia, as Cornelia, Lucrezia and Ottavia, it is an archaic Roman first name. Then, there is the oval so similar to the “Fornarina” ‘s one, painted by Raphael, in which the nose from a Roman statue and the strong-willed chin stand out. Raggi’s has long and straight black hair but try to feature her with a soft chignon and a turreted crown on her head, and you will detect the incredible resemblance of her looks with the allegorical image reproduced by the statuary and on stamps, the Italy’s symbolic epitome, which traces its origins from the ancient Rome. Then, no way for Virginia Raggi to be born in another town than Eternal Rome, on July 18th, 1978, the month of the Cancer, a “feminine and gentle” zodiac sign. Actually Raggi, mother of a 7 year old child, is the expression of the “gentle revolution” of the 5 Stars Movement. In addition, she was grown up and she lives in Rome. Bynow her residence is in the “Ottavia” neighborhood. Octavia was the younger sister of Octavian, later Emperor Augustus, and an examplar Roman lady. When she passed away, Augustus dedicated to her the important for the Roman Senate’s porticus Philippi, which by that time was called “Porticus Octaviae”. Sweet Virginia, doe eyes, Audrey Hepburn’s avatar, - after RAI 1 TV journalist interviewed her. Gianroberto Casaleggio, the M5S ideologue of the movement, who prematurely passed away in 2015, immediately called Raggi in Milan, in his office near Montenapoleone Street, to check her ability to capture attention, to entertain and mesmerize audiences, and to maxim her impact in the politics crowded world. In short, Raggi was perfect. As a politic person, we can say that, since the founding of Rome in 753 BC, Raggi is now there to redeem all the Roman women, those humiliated just as Lucretia and Virginia, those legendary as Cornelia, those exiled as Giulia, those repudiated as Octavia (by Anthony for Cleopatra ...), those kept behind, despite being Virginia Raggi’s soul is noble as well. She was born, and she grew up until her marriage, when she moved to the “Ottavia” neighbohood, in the Appio Latino unpretentious district which, incidentally, owes its name to the censor Appio Claudio the Blind ( 350-271 BC) renowned for his laws’ reforms. As a matter of fact, Virginia Raggi graduated in Laws 110/110 cum laude, the maximum obtainable result for a graduation in Italy, and her curriculum is full of professional achievements. Last but not least, her speeches reflect her visceral attachment to “Roma Capitale”, the administrative body that has replaced the old province of Rome since 31st December 2014. Therefore she got two titles, Rome’s Mayor and metropolitan Mayor. Raggi as got the famous “physique du rôle”, that mixture of personality, charm and “presence on stage”, that the French believe indispensable for a politician. The press invented nice nicknames to describe her beauty – 15 SPECIAL PEOPLE powerful emperors’precious adviser and finally all those artists, writers, poets, history scholars, philosophers, “illustrious unknown”, and not just Roman. Indeed, the female electorate has played a significant role in that 67.15% of the vote. Raggi attended the M5S in 2011, after giving birth to a son. During a Tv interview she said that as she on maternity leave, she walked the infant in a stroller jumping “from pothole to pothole” and that’s how she thought it was time to engaging for the community. We recall some examples of her inventiveness, i.e. when she started a crowdfunding online to financings her campaign, she wrote that “Rome is a wonderful town that deserves to be loved and supported. She wants to revive and to become more livable, from mobility to the care of the territory. Rome - she continued - is our capital and she can return to shine, with the help of all citizens. She needs an honest and free political force: the Movement 5 Stars. She needs a transparent public administration, rigid control on procurement, a reduction of waste and a plan of investments in the social, in the short and in the long term “. Virginia Raggi, who paid her college fees babysitting for rich people, decided to ask a concrete support to her fans: “I can say that the M5S – she wrote - is not a party like the others: it is entirely funded by voluntary donations of its supporters, the party do not receive government funding and it has given up 42 million euro of electoral reimbursements for the current legislative time”. Raggi continued assuring that “of course, all expenses will be invoiced, while any remaining will be used to fund the next steps of the M5S”. Other promising initiatives were the “self-financing appetizers”. Particularly successful it was the one entitled “the mayor who helps”. In fact, Raggi is pictured while serving huge spaghetti’s bowls! Before 2011, Raggi’s husband Andrea Severini was the only activist of the Movement in the family. After his wife’s victory he congratulated her in a widespread public letter online. Occasionaly, he introduced Raggi in some early M5S campaigns, i.e. for the referendum on the water’s privatisation and against nuclear power. After 2011, Severini was a constant presence until his wife’s election. By now he is looking forward to being called by her for advice and possibly more.. but the mayor is keeping him totally away from any decisional power. Perhaps this is due to preserve the privacy or to disagreements in the couple on the tenth year instead of the fateful seventh year of marriage. The swing of the statements on the press continues, even though Raggi has other things to think about, as her decision-making autonomy in M5S. Her election campaign was in fact orchestrated by David Casaleggio, son of Gianroberto: “My autonomy is not so essential, the decisions are made in concert as always. Our imperative is to win for Gianroberto”. After the first polls results, her relationship with the press improved dramatically, thanks to the advice of Casalino Rocco, head of the Movement’s communication. Some omissions on her curriculum have fueled the unfounded information about Raggi’s vicinity to the coservative right roman party. Another unfounded scoop was made by the daily newspaper online of the left party “L’Unità.tv” who posted the ad campaign of Berlusconi in 2008 entitled - “Thank goodness, Silvio is there” - wondering if the dark girl in the video was Virginia Raggi. Immediately, Raggi sent an ironic denial: “I thank “l’Unità.tv” for the free advertising and good journalism, even if the girl in the video is not me.” Raggi added: “In the past I have voted Democratic, but now I regret for their recent views and misadventures.” She asked the Democratic Party to pay the rent of the office in Via dei Giubbonari to the Municipality, but at the same time, her campaign and her press conferences were held in the Senate… so and some members of the Democratic Party have accused the M5S to take advantage of Parliament’s premises. Anyway, to all these quarrels and disputes Raggi has responde with the official announcement of the team’s composition, on July 7. Nine councilors, 5 men and 4 women, “relevant people, because this is what Rome deserves.” said the mayor intervening in the Capitoline Assembly, 19 days after the election. They are the following: Marcello Minenna, a professor at the London Graduate, former executive Consob already in the team of the prefect and former Commissioner Paolo Francesco Tronca, at Budget and Administration; Adriano Meloni, former CEO of Expedia, at the Economic Development; Paolo Berdini, urban planner university lecturer and writer at Infrastructure; Paola Muraro, ex AMA and expert in the waste cycle, at Environment; Luca Bergamo, former Secretary General of Culture Action Europe (CAE), former collaborator of Francesco Rutelli and former deus ex machina of “Enzymes” festival in the years of Walter Veltroni, at Culture; Flavia Marzano, former president of the General States of Innovation and veteran in public communication at Simplification and at Smart City Program; Laura Baldassarre, ex Unicef Italy, ex responsible of the Office of the National Ombudsman of Childhood and Adolescenc, at Social Activities; Linda Meleo, researcher at Luiss University and expert in environmental economics, at Transports. Daniele Frongia, deputy mayor and former city councilor, is the responsible for Sport, a post that at first was proposed to the rugby player Andrea Lo Cicero, while Chief Cabinet is Daniela Morgante. But what are the Raggi’s proposals for Rome? So far, some of her recipes are confusing, her opponents say, i.e. about Rome application to host the 2024 Olympic Games, “We will launch a referendum, we will ask the citizens,” she said to the foreign press. Only to correct herself with a tough “no way”. “In 2024 the Romans could all be dead by thd traffic pollution” Raggi, “il sindaco che ti serve” Raggi, “the mayor who helps”. 16 she said with undisguised irony. What are Raggi’s artilleries to to save the Capitoline “Res publica”, we will soon see. As long as she does not act like a “Rome’s Queen” given the bad end of the last of the Tarquini, but like “a servant” of the eternal town. The M5S leaders should apply to teir modernity some of the Livy’s proceedings, i.e. as the great Roman historian write that there is no doubt that ... “the Brutus who won such glory through the expulsion of Superbus would have inflicted the gravest injury on the State had he chosen to destroy rather than to build ... The infant State would have been torn to pieces by internal dissension. As it was, however, the moderate and tranquilizing (let us hope) authority of the management had so fostered it that it was at last able to bring forth the fair fruits of liberty in the maturity of its strength. “(Livy, Ab Urbe Condita, books, II, 1.) In this context, the later Mayor Ignazio Marino was, let’s face it, almost dethroned by himself ... and now not only the percentage that voted for Raggi, but the whole of Italy hopes that she not only did not let be bribeb by the thirst for power, so unfortunately common to many former mayors, councilors and advisers not only Romans, but that she will make her job well enough to be able to rise to more demanding and prestigious posts. Why not, as to be Premier in the near future. Also according to Livy, Raggi must therefore remember that the accusation of wanting to declare himself king was one of the most serious charges which could incur a powerful figure (yet in 44 BC Julius Caesar’s assassins claimed to have acted to prevent the restoration of an explicit monarchy). Somehow, until the Emperors’time, the defense of the new order of the Republic that had just overthrown the bribed “monarchy” almost psychotic. In fact, the same Publius Valerius (the future Publicola aka “friend of the people”), had to defend himself from the accusation of wanting to make himself king, then forced to tear down the house that he was building on top of the Velia. He then take an oath that Roman citizens would not suffer any man to reign in Rome. The Fornarina by Raphael. A Italy’s symbol. -17 d.C.). Erika CANNOLETTA 21 SPECIAL EVENTS Summer Festival at Le Sporting Club Come to Monaco and meet the biggest stars in the world di Eleonora PEDRON [email protected] MONACO. Once night falls, Monte-Carlo sparkles even brighter with fabulous summer concerts at the exclusive Monte-Carlo Sporting Club. All summer long this club under the stars pulsates with the sounds of international recording artists and first-rate shows. Past stars have included George Benson with Natalie Cole, Andrea Bocelli, The Beach Boys, Diana Krall, Lionel Richie and Julio Iglesias, among many others. Since its creation, the Monte-Carlo Sporting Summer Festival has earned the reputation of bringing the biggest stars to its stage. Backed by 150 years of Monte-Carlo magic, the festival and its exceptional programming continue to put Monaco and the Salle des Etoiles at the top of the summer calendar. Every year, we honour this tradition, while also innovating and adapting to keep pace with the times and look to the future. For 2016, we wanted to give pride of place to the greats of international pop music. This year, ROD STEWART, JULIO IGLESIAS, JAMIE CULLUM and TOM JONES will perform on the greatest stage in the world. We will also be hosting an exceptional concert by one who is surely a legend, CHARLES AZNAVOUR. We recall our readers and navigators to download the June 2016 number 34 of our MonteCarloTimes Magazine (in Italian and French languages), disclosing the thoughts, the Armenian origins and the extraordinary career of this famous French artist. There will also be plenty of rock with a concert by SCORPIONS, and especially LES INSUS, the greatest group in the history of French rock. New for the 2016 season, on the stage of the Opera Garnier Monte-Carlo, will be the Broadway and West End production of the musical SISTER ACT. We are very proud to present the greatest summer festival and to be a part of the Principality of Monaco’s seasonal program. For example, on Saturday, July 23rd we hope that you have yet booked (but try anyway, only by phone: (377) 98 06 63 41) Lana del Rey for the Monaco Red Cross Gala! Lana and Monaco already share a long history. In 2012, when her first album Born To Die had just come out, the 24 Artistic Department of the Société des Bains de Mer was the first to offer her the stage at the Opéra Garnier for a small yet memorable concert. The beautiful American has returned to the principality many times: shooting her first major video here, and performing her second album, Ultraviolence, on the stage of the Monte-Carlo Sporting Summer Festival. Yet another memorable performance! The honeymoon between Lana Del Rey and Monaco continues as she returns this summer to sing songs from Honeymoon, her latest album, and even more mournful and ethereal than its predecessors. The new, California-sun-filled single, ‘Freak’, captures the hippy era with an 11-minute video that finishes with an aquatic ballet to Debussy’s ‘Clair de Lune’. A great opening to her summer concerts, between ‘Summertime Sadness’, ‘Born to Die’, and ‘Video Games’. Just enough time to put a pair of ‘Blue Jean’(s) on a ‘Body Electric’ and drink a ‘Paradise’-style ‘Cola’ and she will be here: near, yet inaccessible all at once. The most mysterious and moving of today’s divas. The dinner show price is 1200 € per person excluding drinks. Monday 25th July SEAL will be on stage. His unique textured voice was first heard in 1991 with Adamski’s dance hit ‘Killer’. Shortly afterwards, ‘Crazy’ put Seal in the pantheon of electro soul. Since then, Henry Olusegun Adeola Samuel (his real name) has sold more than 30 million albums and clocked up a number of the world’s most prestigious awards. Tuesday THE CORRS will follow. It has been 10 years since the family group, formed in 1995 in Dundalk (Ireland) with Andrea (vocals), Sharon (violin and vocals), Caroline (drums, piano, vocals) and Jim Corr (guitar, piano, vocals), last performed together. The Corrs had taken a hiatus after the world tour that followed the release of their fifth album, Borrowed Heaven – a well-earned break after 10 years of touring and a number of memorable hits. Then, on wednesday 27th, with the voice of a crooner but the electrical energy of a showman, Jamie 25 Cullum is the best when it comes to jazz meets pop, a sound he has developed even further in his latest album, Interlude, released in 2014. The week end will sparkle with two legends of the music, JULIO IGLESIAS the 29th and TOM JONES the 30 July. In a A leg of his of his “2016 World Tour”, Julio is back! Not that he ever left, but his appearances at the Sporting are always a great event! Last September, the eternal Latin Lover presented Mexico, his first Spanish album in 12 years, and the opportunity to launch a new world tour. Because, when it comes to singing about love, in any language, Julio Iglesias is always read. Known as ‘The Voice’, Tom Jones is one of the legendary artists that made pop music rise in popularity with global hits such as ‘What’s New Pussycat’, ‘It’s Not Unusual’, ‘Delilah’, ‘Kiss’ and ‘Sex Bomb’. On Tuesday, August 2, the wind of change has well and truly blown on the world of music, but the Scorpions are still here, as faithful as ever to their fans. For half a century, Klaus Meine and his SPECIAL EVENTS friends have been rocking stages around the world with explosive performances of great hits such as ‘Rock You Like A Hurricane’, ‘Wind of Change’, ‘Still Loving You’ and ‘No One Like You’. Wednesday August 3, on stage at the Salle des Etoiles, the former members of the cult band Téléphone will perform all their biggest hits, including “Crache ton venin”, “Un Autre Monde”, “Argent Trop Cher”, “La Bombe Humaine” and many more, so come and enjoy LES INSUS! Thursday, the 4th of July, JOHN NEWMAN, the young Brit with the slicked-back hair, Leo DiCaprio-esque boyish good looks and the warm, husky voice of Paul Young will pay tribute to the Motown and Stax hits that have influenced him from childhood, In fact John exploded onto the music scene in 2013 with ‘Love Me Again’. Pure dance-party, the single came from his debut album, the aptly named Tribute. Then, another terrific week-end thanks to SUPER STAR RAGHEB ALAMA Friday and CHARLES AZNAVOUR Saturday the 6th. Alama is famous throughout the Arab world, where his albums and concerts are hugely successful. In his music he combines the modern with the traditional. Named “Entertainer of the 20th Century” by CNN, Aznavour continues to perform regularly at concerts, to write, compose and record – all at 92 years old,and he is without doubt the one, along with Frank Sinatra, whose aura, fame and recognition are the most universal. The hottest Latin dance show ever, “CONGA” is coming to Monaco, for three nights only, on 8th, 10th and 11th August. Conga is a spicy cocktail of Latin hits and exotic dances at their most incandescent. Then, the exceptional concert by CHICO&THE GYPSIES with 50 guitars can’t be missed. Appearing once again at the Sporting Summer Festival this year, Chico & the Gypsies promise two hours of impassioned gypsy songs and 80s hits that only they could deliver. As for ENRIQUE IGLESIAS on stage the 13th, remember that he has already sold 100 million records, also housting Michael Jackson as the artist with the most No.1s in the history of Billboard! The 15th August, enjoy the Feast of the Assumption in Monaco and the August Bank Holyday with the NEGRAMARO: the group from Lecce, Italy, will give a special concert in Monaco during its first world tour “La rivoluzione sta arrivando”. Finally, the season will end with a huge hit, the famous musical “SISTER ACT”, from 16 August till 20 August. Programming the Monte-Carlo Sporting Summer Festival in the legendary Salle des Etoiles is a massive undertaking and the work of an entire team – the Artistic Department of the Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer group, which includes the Société des Bains de Mer 26 and its subsidiaries: Société Générale d’Hotellerie (SOGETEL), Société Anonyme des Thermes Marins (STM), Société Anonyme d’Entreprises de Spectacles (SAMES), SARL Café Grand Prix. The Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer Resort includes the following institutions: Hotel de Paris – Monte Carlo, Hotel Hermitage – Monte Carlo, Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort, Monte-Carlo Beach Hotel, Casino de Monte-Carlo, Casino Café de Paris, the Sun Casino, Monte-Carlo Bay Casino, Thermes Marins MonteCarlo, Jimmy’z Monte-Carlo, MonteCarlo Sea Lounge, the Salle des Etoiles, Buddha-Bar Monte-Carlo, La Rascasse, Sporting Monte-Carlo, Café de Paris, and all trademarks and distinctive signs associated thereto. Davvero un grande concerto con ‘Summertime Sadness’, ‘Born to Die’, and ‘Video Games’. What’s New Pussycat’, ‘It’s Not Unusual’, ‘Delilah’, ‘Kiss’ and ‘Sex Bomb’’. On November 13th, 2015 in Lima, Peru, during the 2X World Championships FISA Coastal Rowing, two athletes who competed for the red&white colors of the Société Nautique de Monaco have won the gold medal, exceeding the Spanish crew for 30 seconds. They are the monegasque Quentin Antognelli and the Italian Giuseppe Alberti. Their dads are Jean Louis Antognelli, rowing promoter since 90s, and Renato Alberti, Vice President of the Italian Rowing Federation since 2005. In Lima another victory went to the Monaco athletes in the quad with coxswain. The event ended with the announce by FISA that the 2016 World Championships were to be held October 20 to 23 in the Principality of Monaco. We have interviewed Quentin Antognelli in the headquarters of the Societe Nautique de Monaco. “In the rowing discipline the result counts but the pleasure of paddling together, to participate is essential,” said Quentin, and 32 he continued speaking about his Italian origins. “My great-grandparents were born in Italy, in the Lake Trasimeno region, in Umbria. Sport has always been important in my family. My father as a young man and my uncle Michel were nice fencers. Later, my father represented the Société Nautique de Monaco as a rower until 1972. Later, he became the Sport Director of he Rowing sector. He taught me the basics and he trained also Prince Albert, who in 2005 and in 2006 competed in the first two editions of the Prince Albert II Challenge”. In 2004, Quentin debuted in Italy at the age of ten years, at the Piediluco Students National Day. In 2008, he was second in Varese in the 2X with Federico Garibaldi. “I was a child in the junior team. In 2007, just 13 years old, I had the chance to meet some of the best coaches in the world. During the world Rowing Championships in Monaco of Bavaria, they used to track the athletes competing in water, cycling along the path 2 km long. That day I rowed many kilometers and I got a lot of advices! In 2012 in Bulgaria, I was seventh in the 2X in the Junior World Championships. In 2013, during the Mediterranean Games I rowed with Mathias Raymond, eight years older than me, who represented the Principality in two Olympics. I was in a awe, my only goal was to be strong like him.” Quentin, what are your feelings about the upcoming World Championships in Rio. “To represent his country it is the best thing that can happen to an athlete. It is a great honor, the ultimate goal. I am proud to have led, in 2011 for the first time, the Monaco’s flag to the Eaton Junior Championships in England. An unforgettable moment.” Can you tell us some anecdotes. “When I was still Junior, in July 2010, I was chosen to represent, with my Italian friend Raffaele Daniele, the colors of France in the competition against England and .... we won! An Italian and a Monegasque… imagine! Another time, during a competition in Genoa Pra, my boat was swamped by a flood, we went down into the water, we emptied the boat, we got back and we still won the second place.” What is the feeling to be part of a team. “Together on a boat for the first time, as soon as you climb in the boat you become one for all! Personally, I love to row alone, but as soon as I find myself paddling with others in the same boat, the common desire is just to win.” How much is difficult to row with a coaxswain on board. “The weight! I am joking: in fact his role is very important because he is encouraging...but it is much better if he is a skinny man!” We are yet laughing, as Quentin’s father, Jean Louis Antognelli, Sports Director of the Societe Nautique de Monaco, and Gilbert Vivaldi, General Secretary of the Rowing Federation of Monaco, join us. We talk about the Championships to be held in Monaco 20 to 23 October 2016. “The world Rowing Championships is very demanding in terms of organization and mobilization, we need to greatly cooperate with the Yacht Club and with the administrative authorities. Even though we have the experience of the previous races of the Prince Albert II Chal- 33 lenge, we have to take into account a major influx of boats and people: 250 crews are expected for 2/3 days. The whole side of the harbor in front of the Société Nautique de Monaco and the Yacht Club will be taken. We need to organize a good timing for the races so that everyone can row and try to enter the final. The matches of the first day will serve to qualify the crews, who take to the sea in groups of 15 boats every two hours, divided in a fair calculation that puts them all on the same level, for they can find different sea conditions. The first 5 of each series will be part of the final A, the other of the final B. The Sea Rowing is a wonderful discipline that has only existed for 25 years and that requires a lot of care in the organization. To accomplish this you need the help of many volunteers, that we estimated at around 150 people. We should also make totally safe the path of the race that will take place from the Port Hercule up around Cap Martin. We organize a catering on the harbor promenade, on the Lucciana dam, with tents and tables to accommodate about 1,000 people who will be part of this terrific event. Hotels and restaurants around the Port Hercule will open their doors at special prices to accommodate the most of all teams, officials and referees FISA and all the international media who will follow the event.” The Societe Nautique de Monaco and the Rowing Federation of Monaco have wanted this appointment for how long. “As soon as, in 2005, the Prince Albert II Challenge was born! Immediately, we realized that we could host a more important competition, with more crews.” Then, we ask Gilbert Vivaldi if they are planning something special to concluding the three days of the World Rowing Championships. “The three days of the World Rowing Championships will be concluded by the “Gala Rowing evening’ at the presence of the Prince! Quoi de mieux! - The best!” Finally, we ask Quentin Antognelli about his greatest dream. “I would like to become one of the 6 best rowing sportsmen in the world under the age of 23 years. I am training myself with the French team in Lyon to be in shape for a severe trial to be held in Rotterdam at the end of August. I already know that it will be difficult, last year I got the 12th result ... but I will give all!” We greet this young man to become the great champion he wishes to be very soon. He surely worths to succeed. We recall that as a child he was thrown out on the high seas, that he emptied his boat and yet he was able to finish second! The young manager is a fine art scholar and an art patron as well FLORENCE. Fabrizio Moretti was born in Prato on December 6, 1976, son of Alfredo, a well-known Italian antiquarian, and of Kathleen Simonis. He graduated from high school F. Cicognini inPrato. His father decided to retire from the activity in 1993, totally entrusting Fabrizio in the family’s prosperous business. Therefore, the young man was able to devote himself to the study and research, up to a degree in letters and history at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Florence. Especially, just aged 22, he was able to open the Moretti Gallery in Florence. Located in the heart of Florence, between the Strozzi Palace and Santa Maria Novella, the Moretti Gallery opening to the public and to private collectors took place on September 26, 1999, presenting a first and very successful exhibition, “ From Bernardo Daddi to Giorgio Vasari”. The Gallery is now highly recognized as specifically expert in the Tuscan and Italian medieval paintings. In January 2005, a very exclusive Gallery of old paintings from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century, the Moretti Fine Art Ltd. Gallery, was inaugurated in London. Since the opening of the Florence Gallery in 1999, art international historians have collaborated to a number of scientific publications. MONACO. From July 2nd to September 4th 2016, the exhibition, which will feature more than sixty works, is perhaps the most ambitious project dedicated to the artist in recent years. The Grimaldi Forum invites the public to discover the works of Francis Bacon in an unusual light: the influence of the French culture during the time that the artist spent in Monaco and in France. The exhibition is also the first major event organized under the aegis of the recent Francis Bacon MB Art Foundation, inaugurated in Monaco October 28th, 2014, on the anniversary of the artist’s birth, by S.A.S. Prince Albert II. This private institution, non-profit, is the only establishment in the world dedicated to the artist. Its purpose is to promote a better understanding of the work, the life and the working methods of Francis Bacon, focusing on the period in which the painter lived and worked in the Principality and in France. The Foundation supports new research on the painter, sponsors emerging artists and organizes exhibitions and seminars on the Bacon’s works, in collaboration with some local and international institutions, financing projects related to the artist. It’s not hard to see why the artist Francis Bacon should have been drawn to Monte Carlo, where he spent three years in the 1940s, and to which he returned repeatedly during the course of his life, staying in room 681 of the belle époque Hôtel Balmoral (now apartments). The sea air and sunny climate would keep his asthma at bay. The sparkling Côte d’Azur light would delight his eye. And there was the casino, with which he became, in his words, “obsessed” and where he would “spend whole days”. Back in London, he gambled at home with friends too on a roulette wheel now displayed in the Bacon MB Art Foundation. MB aka Majid Boustany, owner, with his brother, of the Metropole, the most fashionable and alluring of the principality’s great grande-dame hotels. As a post-graduate student in the UK in the early 90s, Boustany encountered Bacon’s triptych Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion, now in Tate Britain, and had a kind of epiphany. He began to collect, first lithographs and photographs; Bacon’s paintings do not come cheap; witness the version of Lying Figure with a Hypodermic Syringe, which was sold at Christie’s for £20m last month, then 46 47 SPECIAL ART Boustany bought major works, as well as furniture. If the exhibition’s focus is essentially Bacon’s connection with France and Monaco – witness a rare seascape from 1950 and the outline of a distinctive local mountain in the top-left corner of Fragment of a Crucifixion (1953) – it works equally as an introduction to the life and work of an artist generally hailed the most important British painter of the modern age. More than 60 major works from major international museums as well as 20 private collections never before seen in public hang alongside works by artists who influenced him: Giacometti, Léger, Muybridge, Picasso, Rodin and Toulouse-Lautrec, among them. The Grimaldi Forum was not designed to exhibit art, but in this instance its cavern- Roulette esposta alla Francis Bacon MB Art Foundation. Roulette wheel at the Francis Bacon MB Art Foundation. The exhibition’s curator, Martin Harrison, author of the justpublished Bacon catalogue raisonné, acknowledges a debt to the influence of the influential European stage designers Adolphe Appia (1862-1928) and Edward Gordon-Craig (1872-1966).) In several of the galleries the walls are hung with acres of rich velvet drapery in an appropriately papal purple. It was in Monaco, it turns out, that Bacon painted the first of his homages to Velazquez’s Portrait of Pope Innocent X, a copy of which visitors an admire at the start of the show. Even the lighting seems audacious. For the most part the paintings are dramatically spotlight both to focus attention and enhance the glitter of their gilt frames amid Stygian gloom. Enter the final room, however, where his final painting, Study of a Bull (1991) hangs alongside his 1987 corrida triptych, and suddenly you are out of the sombra and into the bright light of a Madrid bullring. The experience is exhilarating, the culmination of a show that is original, illuminating, immensely enjoyable and, I’d say, well worth the visit and the trip. MONACO. From July 20th to 24th, Art with a capital A is back to the Principality of Monaco, the Grimaldi Forum hosting the sixth edition of the later Salon Point Art Monaco, now known as European Art Fair Monaco. The name change is appropriate, as today the event brings together many sectors of the vast European Art world: the so-called Classical Art including painting, sculpture and drawings, furniture, collectable, antique books and the finest jewellery. The event is organized by the GIE Point Art Monaco, and it tends to replace the famous biannual Antiques Fair, that was held for years now in the Principality. In order to maintain a very high standard, the GIE decided important innovations within its artistic environment, with the election by the managing committee of a new director, Professor Renaud Siegmann, art historian and critic. The man decided the Fair’s new look, more scenic and communicative, focused on the prestige and excellence. Siegmann is a columnist for magazines such as L’Oeil, the Gazette Drouot and The Journal of Arts, in addition to being general commissioner of the Marrakech Art Fair in 2010 and 2011. The other members of the committee in charge of the exhibition are: Marietta Vinci Corsini, Adriano Ribolzi, Alfredo Pallesi, Louis Toninelli and Valentina Vassileva. In her quality of GIE Point Art Monaco’s CEO, Vinci Corsini has a deep knowledge of classical art. In her career she was called as advisor in important art works’ by museums such as the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan, the Louvre in Paris and the New York Museum of Modern Art. Adriano Ribolzi opened an Art Gallery in Monaco in 1974, and for more than forty years he is well known as a specialist in the XVII and XVIII centuries’ furniture. In 1971 he obtained the gold medal in Florence, for the exposition of twelve Louis XV small armchairs, a gift of King Louis XVI to Count Rantzau. In 1998, some of his most beautiful items were put on display at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. He is a member of the National Union of the Antique Dealers, and in 2013 HSH Albert II awarded him the Knight of the Grimaldi’s Order title. Alfredo Pallesi is a specialized art dealer in the XVII to the XX century items, and he has opened art galleries in many places, from the North to the South of Italy. EAF’s goal is to put in a more contemporary light the so called “classic” or “museum “Art in the Principality, and not only. At the same time, EAF wants to present an accurate selection of the actuality in the Art topics, from contemporary paintings to jewellery, from furniture to books. The EAF’s main goal is to increase its reputation and thus its public, exposing valuable objects carefully selected from various international museums and famous private collections. Among about thirty exhibitors, we mention Dadiani (London / Monaco), Kunstberatung (Zurich), De Jonckheere (Geneva / London), and the Trinity House (London / New York). Among the exhibits the public will admire important works by Brueghel, Calder, El Greco, Kandinsky, Monet and Warhol, and the precious creations of jewellers as Chatila (Geneva), David Morris (London), Sabbadini (Milan), Tenzo Jewellery House (St. Petersburg ), and Zela Jewels (Istanbul). Therefore, thanks to its ultra-modern facilities and to its large halls sumptuously illuminated, the Grimaldi Forum will be the perfect home to the EAF and to the important Francis Bacon’s Summer Exhibition, inaugurated on the 2nd of this month of July. Don’t miss them. For more information visit the website http://www.eafmonaco. com/ La “nuova” European Art Fair Monaco al Grimaldi Forum dal 20 al 24 luglio MONACO. MONACO. Infine, Valentina Vassileva è fondatrice del salone Jewels of the World, totalmente consacrato all’alta gioielleria e ai gioielli d’epoca. Pallesi Art Gallery. 58 SPECIAL PEOPLE Our interview with the motivational coach Matt Traverso, from London with trust 62 di Teodora ATTUBATO [email protected] A destra Matt Traverso con John Gray, sotto con Emanuela Foliero. MONTE-CARLO. LONDON. We have met Matt Traverso in LondonHeathrow, during his transfer from Australia to Dubai. The British capital is a melting pot of races and cultures and pretty appropriate to the personality and the free spirit of the famous coach. Therefore, he has agreed to reveal some secrets of his relationship with some Hollywood stars and with the most influential names in the jet set. He has been coaching a long list of them, among many others John Gray (that everyone remembers for the theory that men are from Mars and women from Venus), the child psychiatrist Giovanni Bollea, the famous dancer Carla Fracci and the actor Antony Hopkins. At the end of our meeting, for example, he will dine with an Italian tycoon, whom name is of course top secret. “When I met Hopkins - he says – he had had problems from alcoholism for about twenty years. He could control his emotions on the set, yet he was insomniac. When sleeping, he had nightmares about old facts, sort of disturbing demons that deprived him of serenity and of inner peace. He tried to fight, to resist; he repeated to himself that he was stronger and that he could destroy them. Instead, during two “transmuting” coaching sessions, we tried a different approach. Embracing the demons, the cohesion simply drove them out. As a result, they disappeared”. 63 What is the experience you are most proud of? “Well, given that you are Italian, I will tell you about the twelve uninterrupted hours’ session with a famous Italian fashion designer, Alviero Martini... From nine a.m. to nine p.m. We went through his bluest times, in which he felt haunted by a sort of conspiracy against him. This state of thing was very bad for both his private and his professional life. Insecurity comes from our beliefs, even if they have no foundation. Let me give an example: if we are convinced that the roof is about to collapse, our attention is focused on that issue and we get stuck. Eighty percent of my work, in fact, turns the people’s negative beliefs into positive, potential, winning beliefs”. Did that feeling work well for Alviero Martini? “Absolutely yes. Choosing a different approach, he removed the interior schemes that were debilitating him. After our meeting, things have changed. I had him over the phone, he invited me to dinner and he was enthusiastic. He told me about his new life, the new brand, the new house, the trips ... So, getting rid of negative thoughts; his creativity re-emerged stronger than before. Finally, he had found his way”. Any disappointing experience? “I may be candid, I can say, none... The truth is that if we bring the human SPECIAL PEOPLE being through an intense path, figuring out and transforming the things that do not work, then we can achieve a total neurological reprogramming. My style of coaching is very practical, it tends to give a more visceral sense to life. I want quick changes; therefore I put the subject in a context of great emotional intensity, for better or for worse. He can’t stay stuck, he must not freeze, and he must feel the pain. Is he ready to suffer, will he not give up, will he make everything to change things? Only then he can achieve a definitive and lasting change. Not forever, perhaps, but for sure the effects will be seen for years”. So, your method works. I can see that you do not wear a wedding ring. Are your professional success, and the travelling all the time, affecting somehow your private life? “My private life could not be better. From my meetings with hundreds of thousands of people, I experienced that the more painful feeling is always sentimental. A marriage of two ends in divorce. I do not think of anything better, but, in my opinion, the contract could be redefined. You cannot take as a reference scale the happy ending. As Angelina Jolie says: “The happy end is still to come”. Anyway, Angelina chooses to marry... “Yes, but there is no exclusive relationship in the couples”. Do you ever need to be stimulated; do you sometimes feel the need to be coached? “I need to learn, teaching and coaching makes me a big consumer of coaching; I explore myself continuously, not necessarily through a session. In most cases, I am positively influenced by the people who can do amazing things. For example, a man with no legs and no arms, which has attained unimaginable heights, inspires me enormously. I know the mechanisms that regulate emotions. We are looking for them, maybe even subconsciously. The important thing, therefore, is to gain awareness, so that we can fully manage our lives”. What is the connection between your style of coaching and your fitness and wellness? “It is a bit like the saying: mens sana in corpore sano. I cannot afford to be sick. Around the world people pay me in advance to attend my sessions, so to give my best my health must be at the top”. Coaching applied to politics. It is election time: Trump or Clinton? Which of the two would need a trainer? “The first has always refused to be coached. As a child, his parents instilled him the fact that he was the number one and now he has got a super- ego that he cannot manage. The second is an extraordinary woman. She is very balanced because she has got a coach in the family, her husband. Not surprisingly, Bill Clinton does motivational speeches and he gets three hundred and twenty thousand US dollars for operating in the companies”. What do you think of the European leaders? I remember that Blair has followed a neuro-linguistic training program. Nowadays, the government leaders are quite balanced. Who would need a coach is your Renzi. The base is there. With few one-to-one sessions he would become perfect. He has an incredible energy and he could make the most of it”. Riaffioravano vecchi fantasmi. Potremmo definirli demoni. BIBIONE ~ VENEzIa Make a wish come true. In Sanremo, the tendency to complaints is a habit not always justified. For sixty years the town hosts the Sanremo Music Festival, famous throughout the world. The Festival’s potential is particularly important with regard to the world of luxury. The style (especially Italian) is the dress of thoughts; and a thought, as a well dressed man, when well dressed, is most listened to, so said Lord Chesterfield in 1700. The style that dresses the thought of a young Sanremo manager has won the Asian market. The young manager has an great preparation, combined with curiosity and humility, typical of those who can listen, who know that one never stops learning. Gio’ Giacobbe, married and father to a new-born son, agreed to the interview, live from Shanghai. Satisfy- 71 ing our curiosity, he will tell us how he became CEO of a major fashion brands such as Trussardi. We wonder, Mr. Giacobbe, how was this possible? “Sure you can, working hard and assuming that we can and must learn from everyone. In Sanremo and in that province in general, the tendency to complaints is always very popular, but not always justified, in my opinion. What leads to great results are curiosity and the desire to work constructively rather than destructively. My course of study, for example, took me beyond all expectations. I graduated from high school with a degree in psycho-pedagogical to Mater Misericordiae in 2002, followed by a degree in business administration at the Bocconi University in Milan, in SPECIAL ITALIANS IN THE WORLD just two years. I alternated the study to work, but also to travel: half a year in Berlin and one year in Maastricht were instrumental in my training, which led me to finally master’s degree in management for the enterprise in 2005 “. And then, a career in the fashion world. Passion or just chance? “The world of fashion has come along. Initially I was involved in giving tax advice for important companies in Italy and abroad, until I received a proposal from a great American fashion house. From that moment my work in a parallel universe, unique and perhaps complicated began. Fashion is the most competitive market in the world. Working for Trussardi here in Asia means exporting Italy “. How much complicated is your task in Asia? “As managing director for Asia, I coordinate approximately 200 people, with the aim of exporting the Italian style in a part of the world that does not know it well. Perhaps Asians know the food and wine sectors, often not in the original form. Of course it is impossible to make a unique thought. Consider the significant differences, for example, between Sanremo and Imperia, and you can imagine how much diversity we can meet in a country like China, which has 1 billion and 300 million inhabitants, and in Asia”. Have you exported other made in Italy special products from Imperia, aside from fashion “Sure, I would say that none of my guests in China were exempt from tasting our local products, such as oil and olives. In this I am very lucky, because my brother in law, for example, owns the Gaziello Olive Oil Factory in Ventimiglia”. You have a new-born baby. Where would you like that he grow up? “In Sanremo, absolutely. Beyond the beauty of our sea, the town offers health products for the diet and offering our diet and the proximity of the mountains. In China, my son would lose its roots. He is Italian, his DNA resides in Sanremo, so there is no better place for him. China has completely different values from ours and, perhaps, even a Chinese child would end up being better at Sanremo than in Shanghai “. What do you recommend to an Italian young man who wanted to make a success path as yours? “To study a lot. To learn languages and 72 to be very open minded. A clear line that makes the difference in any profession, is the humility to learn and to understand that everyone can teach us something, regardless of their location. “ Do you think to return to Italy and to Sanremo in the future? “That ‘s what I want; when my son will enter the University I’m going “home” and I will stay there. Perhaps opening a tourist activity. I have spent every Christmas at home, because my roots and my family are in San Remo, a beautiful city which would need to be more valued. Sanremo is much more that the Festival. There is a Rallye, a Casino and the town has a setting that is unique in the world. I think that the administration must do its part, but citizens should invest more in this wonderful town”. Fashion is not just a job, but a world apart, a way of life-changing. Just like the clothes that parade on the catwalk during a collection: ephemeral. Intuition, groundwork and Gio’ Giacobbe kindness are the things that made enjoyable the conversation. It was like attending to a “collection”, of those that never go out of style. Giampiero AGUS Easy to Plate Vianord came up wit the idea and designed the first modular system for the complete automation of the process of flexographic plates. Bring the modular concept to life is on its own an example of the capacity of Vianord to develop new projects. The concept has been given a name which identifies the goal “Easy to Plate”. The first step and the base of the modular concept is the processor section. It is then possible to add at any time the different modules to reach customers expectations in terms of performance, productivity and quality. The installation of the different modules is made easy and requires a limited amount of time. Thanks to the integration of the modular concept in the design of the processor. They have the fundamental function to detect the seriousness of the problems involving our lives, as well as giving concrete guidelines to address decisive challenges to problems that can not be postponed”. The environment Minister Gian Luca Galletti so stated, addressing the participants at the sixth course of environmental training for media professionals, which was held in late June in Matera, the stone town, elected capital of European Culture 2019. The course, whose theme was titled “Myth and reality of natural and man-made hazards”, was promoted by the University of the Basilicata Region, with support from the headquarters of Rai Basilicata and with the sponsorship of the Ministry of Environment, the Basilicata Region, the City of Matera, Matera 2019 and the National Order of journalists Foundation. Aim of the course has been to present to journalists and media communication professionals the results of the latest research in the field of natural and anthropic hazards, re- 78 sorting to a series of lectures, seminars and guided tours curated by academics. A full immersion which has involved many colleagues, reported by newspapers, press agencies and environmental associations of the country, ordered according to a formula established by the director of the Rai Basilicata headquarters, Mr. Fausto Taverniti. The didactic aspect was wonderfully coordinated by Professor Aurelia Sun, Unibas Rector, and by Professor Francesco Sdao, as always a great animator of the course. During the six days in Matera, 79 SPECIAL ENVIRONMENT Italian longstanding issues related to hydrogeological difficulties have been addressed, as well to earthquakes, renewable energies and archeology. It was proposed that important insights on environmental culture become an integral part of the program of “Matera 2019”. Minister Galletti said that, “Only by focusing on the environment, we can improve the quality of life in our cities, the air we breathe, traffic and waste, and only investing in safety and prevention we can avoid a repeat of the disasters that both have marked Italy and Italians.” Mr.Fausto Taverniti alleged that, “The environmental training course for media professionals confirms to be an important tool for a dialogue between communication actors, institutions and scientific communities. An opening that is essential to foster the exchange of expertise and to increase the effectiveness of the messages conveyed by the journalists on a sensitive topic such as environmental protection and emergency management”. A major emphasis was therefore given to journalistic ethics, which must be as informed, impartial and objective as possible. In this regard, the journal- ists have drawn up a document called “Charter of Matera”, to be submitted to the National Association of the Press and to be incorporated in the code of ethics of the members of the Chamber. On the sidelines of the course, the colleague Osvaldo Bevilacqua, author and presenter, from thirty-eight years, of the RAI program “Sereno variabile” (“Variable weather”) was awarded the Prize “The Green Pen”. As a sign of loyalty to the course, the traditional “Cuckoo” a distinctive whistle of the “city of stone”, was handed to Mr. Beppe Rovera, a former tenant of the Italian Environment program in the RAI headquarters in Turin. The director of Rai, Mr. FaustoTaverniti, has then announced that the next year and in collaboration with the Region of Piedmont, the course could split in two, extending to the city of Turin, with a grand finale at “La Villa Sassi”, the eighteenth-century majestic mansion surrounded by a centennial park on the slopes of Pino Torinese’s hill. In the 50s, the villa was transformed into the today prestigious five-star luxury hotels. As a preview, therefore, and by sheer coincidence, “From the Sassi Village 80 in Matera to the Villa Sassi in Turin” could be the title of the seventh course of environmental training. It will continue to be held in Matera, and always during what will be the 628th edition of the Festa della Bruna. This feast is an unbroken tradition since the fourteenth century, in honor of the Saint Mary della Bruna, patron saint of the city of Matera, a major local event that involves the whole Basilicata and that is followed by millions of Italian tourists and foreigners, who come specially from the Sassi to assist. The reopening of the cathedral, which took place last spring, brought the party back to its medieval origins. The longest day of Matera provides three traditional laps in the Cathedral Square of the chart supporting the Madonna. Every year, a beautiful paper mache tank is designed by a famous artist, followed by the procession of the shepherds, amongst impressive illuminations arranged along via del Corso. Wondeful fireworks, coloured composition timed with music among the Sassi always animate the village, in addition to a myriad of cultural events related to the tradition of this extraordinary piece of Italy, unique in the world. A prestigious home from the 16th century, Villa Pallavicino is set back in a large garden surrounded by an ancient moat protected on four sides by a ditch, with the road leading up to it lined with ancient lampposts, hidden away in the silence of Busseto’s countryside. This is what awaits those who want to visit this new National Giuseppe Verdi Museum, in his hometown of Busseto. Thanks to a public-private partnership, including the Municipality of Busseto, Ascom Parma and other important private supporters, the Association Verdi Multimedia Srl was established, taking over the management of Villa Pallavicino, to celebrate the Man, the Operas, and the Myth of the “Swan of Busseto”. Especially the entrepreneur, Sir Mariano Volani, wished to celebrate the Verdi Genius, realizing a National Museum with contents, classes and services worthy of an international centre. At the opening, he said with pride, “It will be memory of the past and test site for the new generations”. He chose the well-known director and set designer Maestro Pier Luigi Pizzi, important collaborator Rai and of the Piccolo Teatro di Genova, and the artistic direction of Riccardo Joshua Moretti, former conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, also composer of successful movies ‘soundtracks. Awarded with the “Bravo Award” at the Carnegie Hall in New York, in 2010 he joined the Venice Film Festival with the soundtrack of the film “La Commedia” by director Amos Poe, narrated by Roberto Benigni. His latest work “Golem” was staged in 2010 in Parma and Tel Aviv. The entire team has contributed to give awareness to the cultural, artistic and tourist benefits of the project. In fact, Busseto is in the middle of the Verdi’s countryside, where art, culture, wine and food integrate with the places celebrating his memory. Giuseppe Verdi is the most played opera composer all over the world for the universality of his music, which mark man’s passions, reaching exciting and immortal expressive peaks. Luciano Pavarotti, few months before passing away, enthusiastically agreed to the proposal of becoming the Honorary President of the new Museum dedicated to the composer, whose operas he played many times in the most important theatres of the world. Great performers like Pavarotti, Domingo, Carreras, Bocelli, and many great conductors like Muti, Abbado, Maazel, Oren, famous directors like P.L.Pizzi, Zeffirelli, Montaldo, De Bosio, Patroni Griffi, and many others in the world, perpetuate the greatness of his musical genius, every year, in the most prestigious theatres worldwide. 86 87 SPECIAL MUSEUM With a Scientific Committee of international prestige and a structured working group, the New Museum is an important and international reference point, for a large target of visitors: music lovers, conservatories, schools, musicologists, associations, companies, artists. Inaugurated in 2009, the museum complex of Villa Pallavicino has been integrated for the celebrations in the year 2013 - 200th Anniversary of Verdi’s birth - by some utilities which have converted the Museum in a multidisciplinary centre for listening and learning .The National Museum is the celebration of Verdi’s genius, a rediscovery of the man, his works, and his legend. A precise historic journey will accompany visitors through the Maestro’s twenty-seven works, with reproductions of the original settings of Casa Ricordi. The 19th century rooms with collections of paintings from Francesco Hayez to Boldini, the immortal music of the Maestro and theatrical lighting, represent a “unicum” in the Italian and international museums. The music stands and the innovative Wi-Fi audio guides in four languages with a narrative by the hart critic Philippe Daverio offer a historical vision of the era, the events and the people that influenced Giuseppe Verdi in the creation of his masterpieces. The charming Music Room, with 100 seats, a piano and a large screen with high definition projector, is the multipurpose space for events, conferences and seminars, weddings and gala dinners, demos and workshops. The garden surrounding the villa offers ample space for relaxation, ideal for schools, but also for events and shows of all kinds. All this is set in a context of sublime magic and Renaissance genius: frescoes, decorations, plots of cherubs, mermaids, tritons and birds, gardens, ditches, balustrades and statues. The prestigious Villa of the Marquis Pallavicino, in 1543 hosted the memorable meeting between Emperor Charles V Hapsburg and Pope Paul III Farnese. They agreed the new territorial organization of the papal legation and the creation of the Farnese Duchy, entrusted in the consistory of 27 August 1545 to Pierluigi Farnese, the Pope’s son and great supporter of the Church. Today, here all the work of the great lyrical genius of Giuseppe Verdi revives. For instance, recent concerts told about Verdi as man away from the stage and from the international renown, nicknamed by his friendship relations, such as by Giuseppina Strepponi, “the Magician”. Voice and accordion alternately, were narrating the popular Verdi, the poor farmer’s son who was born and raised in the countryside. Thanks to the grant from a Busseto Bank, the young Verdi entered the con- servatory, but he was soon rejected. At this defeat, the post of music teacher at the City of Busseto followed. Terrible mourning in the family hit then the Master, before the triumph of Nabucco at La Scala in Milan. An escalation of immortals successes followed, with “Rigoletto”, “Il Trovatore,” “La Traviata”. In these memorable works and passionate love for the melodies, Verdi created the new drama. Here, the condition of the protagonist is a prerequisite for the construction of the story and the dramatic conflicts of complex and ambivalent characters. The “trilogy” Rigoletto, Trovatore and Traviata, is a milestone in the Verdi’s research. He uses the language and the formal conventions of Italian opera of the nineteenth century in a completely new way, with the integration of large scenic blocks, with a set of action and reflection, dissolving any rigid formal scheme to adhere to the characters’ interiority. It is a dramaturgical research of the human nature in all its complexity, very precise and more realistic. Therefore, the Verdi’s “trilogy” represents the milestone between the romantic melodrama and the realism of the late nineteenth century. After reaching a huge success, Verdi went back to his native countryside, in Sant’Agata and, in winter, he settled in Genoa. In this period, important commissions came from foreign theatres: “La forza del destino” for the Imperial Petersburg, remakes of “Macbeth” and “Don Carlos” for the Parisian theatres and finally the “Aida” for Cairo. The opera was performed on Christmas Eve 1871, in a magnificent and mundane setting, in the presence of ambassadors and Egyptian rulers. Verdi added to Aida some characteristics of the great French opera, exalted by the dances and by the famous triumphal scene, along with a deep psychological insight. For the first Italian performance of Aida, which took place at La Scala in Milan on 8 February 1872, Verdi decided to employ the set designer Girolamo Magnani, who in Cairo had made copies of some sketches. Along with the faithful reproduction of Pharaonic Egypt, Magnani evocated an atmosphere suited to the dramatic situation. His scenes, in particular the final death of the two lovers, were copied and re-proposed in the course of countless productions all over the world. Later, Verdi disclosed his grief at the passing away of Manzoni and Rossini with the famous Requiem. After so many dramas and the famous “Othello”, finally he composed a comic masterpiece, the “Falstaff”. Verdi’s last public appearance took place when he directed, at La Scala in Milan, the prayer of “The Moses”, to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Rossini.
