Challenging Testaccio 12.10.12 (Programme)
On October 12, 2012 the Soprintendenza Speciale per I Beni Archeologici di Roma and the
Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome (KNIR) are pleased to invite you to the international
workshop on Challenging Testaccio and Spatial Data Infrastructures, organised together with
the Research Institute for the Heritage and History of he Cultural Landscape and Urban
Environment (CLUE) and the Spatial Information laboratory (SPINlab).
The rione Testaccio is a district in the centre of Rome. It is an urban landscape in flux, with major
challenges to its built heritage. These challenges have inspired the SSBAR and the KNIR to start
the project Challenging Testaccio. The project aims to study the history and heritage of
Testaccio through an interdisciplinary approach, integrating studies of the cultural, scientific as
well as economic aspects of heritage. A second goal is to investigate how the heritage can be
integrated into the modern city. To further those aims, two Dutch research institutes, CLUE and
SPINlab, were invited to build a Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI), able to integrate the relevant
geospatial information into a digital environment. By setting up an SDI, stakeholders with
different levels of experience in GeoIT and knowledge about the history and heritage have
access to reliable and usable information about the rione Testaccio. This will encourage
collaboration between the different disciplines investigating the history and heritage of
Testaccio, thus encouraging innovative interdisciplinary methods. It will also enable sustainable
management of Testaccio's heritage informed by scientific findings. The present workshop aims
to present the Challenging Testaccio-project and the related SDI to colleagues, authorities,
stakeholders and the general public.
Location: Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome, via Omero, 10-12, 00197 Rome.
