altrettanto intelligenti
capacità imprenditoriali,
ha fornito oggetti al mondo
dell’arredamento per
ufficio e collettività che
ancora oggi ne
rappresentano veri
crocevia. Sedute uniche
come Plia o Penelope,
od oggetti che precorrono
problematiche
ergonomiche come DSC
e Vertebra, sono ancora
oggi dimostrazioni tangibili
delle qualità innovative e
di design della Castelli.
Vertebra
nasce nel 1979, un raro
esempio di soluzione
ergonomica dell’oggetto
poltrona.
Nel progetto Vertebra
convergono la raffinata
intelligenza e l’ingegno
meccanico di Emilio
Ambasz e Giancarlo
Piretti.
Sempre nel 1979, la giuria
del XII premio SMAU
Industrial Design, assegna
a Castelli il
riconoscimento, con la
seguente motivazione:
“Per Vertebra disegnata
da Emilio Ambasz e
Giancarlo Piretti,
interessante approccio alla
progettazione di un
sistema di oggetti. Il tema
principale che ha pilotato
la progettazione di questo
sistema di sedie è quello
dell’ergonomia integrata a
una corretta soluzione
formale e tecnologica.”
Nel 1981, sempre per
Vertebra, Castelli ottiene il
suo primo Compasso
D’Oro.

skilful intuition of
extraordinary designers,
combined with
entrepreneurial talent, now
supply articles to the world
of office and institutional
furniture that still today
represent a significant
turning point in
developments. Unique
chairs such as Plia or
Penelope, or objects that
anticipate the problems of
ergonomics such as DSC
and Vertebra, are still
today tangible proof of the
innovative quality and
design of Castelli.
Vertebra was created in
1979, a rare example of
an ergonomic solution for
seating.
The Vertebra project
blends the superior
intelligence of Emilio
Ambasz and the
mechanical genius of
Emilio Ambasz and
Giancarlo Piretti.
In the same year of 1979,
the jury of the 12th SMAU
Industrial Design award,
commended Castelli for
the following reasons:
“For Vertebra designed by
Emilio Ambasz and
Giancarlo Piretti; an
interesting approach to the
design of a series of
objects. The main theme
leading the design of this
system of seats is that of
ergonomics integrated
with a correct formal and
technological solution.”
In 1981, again for
Vertebra, Castelli received
its first Compasso D’Oro
award.

sedute che cambia

automaticamente per

anatomico qualsiasi
posizione il Vostro corpo
debba adottare.
E’ priva di leveraggi o
controlli manuali.
Quando ricevete un ospite
o Vi trovate in una
situazione “formale”...
sedeteVi e la sedia
automaticamente adotterà
una confortevole posizione
verticale.
Quando scrivete al vostro
tavolo inclinateVi in
avanti... e la sedia
automaticamente oscillerà
di 6° verso il basso per
evitare il blocco della
circolazione sanguigna
mentre continua a
sorreggere il Vostro corpo.
Quando parlate al
telefono, leggete o
chiudete gli occhi per
meditare, il sedile scivola
in avanti mentre lo
schienale oscilla
all’indietro consentendoVi
una posizione di relax.

schienale oscilleranno
all’indietro di 12° per un
ulteriore rilassamento.

Le sedute Vertebra per
l’ufficio sono state
disegnate per soddisfare
le particolari esigenze
delle persone che
lavorano.
Comprendono ampi sedili
e schienali, imbottiti in
poliuretano morbido che si
estende sui bordi per
eliminare i punti di
pressione che
normalmente inibirebbero
la circolazione del sangue.
Il disegno ortopedico del
sedile e dello schienale è il
risultato di collaudi estesi
e accurati per ottenere il
massimo sostegno.
I meccanismi esclusivi di
Vertebra permettono al
sedile e allo schienale di
muoversi
automaticamente e
indipendentemente per
adottare posizioni di relax
o erette.

The result is the only

automatically changes its
seat/back configuration to
provide the correct
anatomical support
whatever seating posture

Automatic adjustment
means no levers or
manual controls... When
you sit formally to receive
visitors the chair moves
into a comfortable upright
position...
When you lean forward to
write, the chair inclines
downward by 6° to prevent
obstruction of blood
circulation while
maintaining body
support...
When you phone, read or
lean back in thought the
seat slides forward, the
back reclines and you sit
comfortably relaxed...

Generously proportioned,
seats and backs are
upholstered in soft
polyurethane which is
extended to the edges in
order to minimise pressure
points that otherwise
would hinder blood
circulation.
All chairs incorporate
Vertebra’s unique
mechanical features which
enable seat and back to
move automatically and
independently and to
maintain correct support
for any sitting posture.
