I NTRODUCTION
Digital Library Numis (DLN) is intended as a general portal and repository of all open access numismatic
books, journals and articles, currently available on the internet. All entries are presented with detailed
bibliographic metadata, often supplemented with a brief summary of the subject.
DLN is in particular useful as an additional research tool for professional numismatists, but also for other
scholars interested in the field, branch libraries and advanced coin collectors.

Studies in numismatic method : presented to Philip Grierson / ed. by C.N.L. Brooke ...
[et al.]
Edition:
Digital ed.
Published:
Cambridge : Cambridge University Press, 2008
Abstract:
Coins are one of the most abundant sources for our study of the past, yet their value as
historical evidence is relatively neglected because of a general lack of knowledge of
numismatic techniques. This volume of essays, offered by a circle of friends, colleagues
and pupils working in Britain, Europe and North America, is intended to pay tribute to
Philip Grierson's unique contribution to the study of numismatic method. A medievalist
by training, through his wide-ranging interests in coins and coinage Grierson has
commanded the respect of historians and numismatists of all periods for the originality
and good sense of his prolific scholarship. More than any other living scholar, he has
been responsible for making available an understanding of numismatic expertise to
specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Heesch
Source:
Dossiers d'Archéologie 248 (novembre 1999) p. 4-13
Abstract:
An excentric character who had very soon substantial financial means at his disposal,
Albéric du Chastel de la Howardries (1842-1919) built a unique collection of 821 coins
(among which more than 300 Greek and 500 Roman), most of them rare and in mint
state condition, coming from famous sales of his time (Dupré, Julien Gréau, Jarry
Sandès, Tyskiewicz, Bartolomeo Borghesi, Demetrio, Ponton d'Amécourt, de Quelen,
Ashburnam, Bunbury, Montagu, etc.) or reputed hoards (14 aurei come from the
Boscoreale hoard). In 1899, he succeeded to sale his coin collection, expertised by
Ernest Babelon, to the Belgian state for 300,000 Belgian francs

Deux manières de concevoir l’importance des monnaies antiques dans la formation des

François de Callataÿ
Source:
La Vie des Musées 20 (2006) p. 30-37
Abstract:
The lives, the antiquarian interests and the numismatic collections of Hubert Goltz
(1526-1583) and Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) are discussed. Beyond the
numismatist, Goltzius was an engraver, as well as a very innovative published and
bookseller. We are not very well informed about the coin collection of Rubens, who
favoured antiquities of a higher level (sculptures and gems).

A history of money : from AD 800 / John Chown
Published:
London : Routledge, 1996
Abstract:
Everyone is familiar with money. Yet few realise that currently contentious issues and
financial difficulties are not new. On the contrary, most are firmly rooted in the past and
when examined help to put current economic problems in historical context. This book
presents a detailed history of money from Charlemagne's reform in approximately AD
800 to the end of the Silver Wars in 1896. It also offers a summary of twentieth century
events and an analysis of how the past relates to present problems. This book examines
how virtually all modern difficulties associated with money have precedents in the past.
It discusses how a mercantile system developed alongside simple, metallic, medieval
coinage, in a way which has important lessons for the countries now emerging from
central planning. It covers the great periods of monetary disputes, Henry VIII and Sir
Thomas Greshem, Isaac Newton's Great recoinage of 1696, Ricardo and the Bullion
Committee Report, the battle between the Banking and currency schools, and the much
neglected but increasingly relevant, issues of bimetallism and European monetary union
in the late nineteenth century. The monetary theories of such diverse characters as
Locke, Defoe, Swift and Sir Walter Scott are discussed as well as those of many
economists. The coverage is international, and includes the controversial private banking
period in the early United States between Independence and the Civil War.

The distribution of the numbers of coins struck by dies / Warren W. Esty and Giles F.
Carter
Source:
American Journal of Numismatics 2nd ser. 3-4 (1991-1992) p. 165-186
Abstract:
The number of coins struck before a die becomes unusable varies widely from die to die.
Evidence from modern mint records and die-count data from ancient coins is used in an
attempt to determine the distribution.
Note: A great deal of additional data was considered in my 2011 article, "The geometric
model for estimating the number of dies," which should be read after reading this article.

Offprint from: Numismatic Chronicle 166 (2006) p. 359-364
Abstract:
Formulas for estimating the original number of dies from die-count data are given. The
reasons they might not yield good estimates are discussed.
Note: Although they were the best formulas known in 2006, additional data suggests a
method which is usually better. See my 2011 article, "The geometric model for
estimating the number of dies." However, the "Discussion" section is still relevant as are
the confidence interval formulas.

Summary:
Weights of large numbers of coins can be difficult to summarize and interpret. Several
ways to plot data are discussed and the Percentile Plot is recommended, especially for
comparing weights of two or more issues.

The theory of linkage / Warren Esty
Source:
Numismatic Chronicle 150 (1990) p. 205-221
Abstract:
Linkage can help arrange dies in chronological order and help determine how the mint
was organized. However, there are many caveats and typical deductions are often
unwarranted unless the model of mint operation is remarkably simple. What can be
deduced *if* the assumptions hold is discussed and the numismatic considerations that
bear on *whether* the assumptions hold are outlined.

Archaeological Dialogues 18 (2011) 1 p. 87-108
Abstract:
This paper sets out to re-member coins into archaeological discourse. It is argued that
coins, as part o material culture, need to be examined within the theoretical framework
of historical archaeology an material-culture studies. Through several case studies we
demonstrate how coins, through their integration of text, image and existence as
material objects, offer profound insights not only into matters of economy and the ‘big
history’ of issuers and state organization but also into ‘small histories’, cultural values
and the agency of humans and objects. In the formative period of archaeology in the
19th century the study of coins played an important role in the development of new
methods and concepts. Today, numismatics is viewed as a field apart. The mutual
benefits of our approach to the fields of archaeology and numismatics highlight the need
for a new and constructive dialogue between the disciplines.

Medeltidsarkeologisk Tidskrift (2005) 3 p 37-52
Abstract:
Coins and coin finds can be used to initiate interdisciplinary dialogues especially between
numismatics and archeology. One fruitful way to accomplish this is to regard coins both
as texts and material culture. Coins comprise textual qualities which in certain respects
remind of the written sources. From this angle coins can be associated with their original
monetary context. On the other hand, coins are also material objects reappearing in
different contexts carrying with them earlier monetary ideas and concepts. Coin finds
also reveal the ongoing strife between coin issuers trying to establish their authority and
coin users who react on the legislation of coin use imposed on them. Coins embody the
dynamic concepts of medieval particularism and the quest for control and sovereignty
over land and people. Rather than regarding the establishment of coins as a general
means of payment as a straightforward and continuous process, coin use during the
Middle Ages is to be understood as chaotic and discontinuous.

Abstract:
After an intense season marked by the direction of Giuseppe Fiorelli, the National
Archaeological Museum of Naples began a long period of stasis during the management
of Giulio De Petra, who, only in 1893, decided to resume the work of reorganization of
the medals that Fiorelli had not completed and to entrust part of the job to the young
Ettore Gabrici. The work continued for some years with very positive results which were
unfortunately frustrated almost entirely during the Ettore Pais’s direction, protagonist of
a general reorganization of the collections which put in serious harms the integrity of the
rich medals, presumably subject to theft and replacements due to antiquarians such as
Cesare Canessa. With the removal of Pais in 1904, was again called Gabrici to resume
the reorganization of the collection, work that occupied him for several years and that he
could not bring to completion because of the serious state of disorder and lack of means.
The appointment as Director of Vittorio Spinazzola in 1910 provoked a new and
definitive removal of Gabrici, leaving the numismatic collections in the hands of
Lorenzina Cesano. A vast amount of unpublished archival documents has contributed to
the reconstruction of these complex events, in which human experiences are merged
with the history of the most important museum of southern Italy.

Collectors at auctions, auctions for collectors / Hadrien Rambach
Source:
Schweizer Münzblätter 238 (Juin 2010) p. 35-43
Abstract:
A large number of people, including most collectors, have bought or sold at auction . In
2007 alone, over 80 million people used the electronic auction-house Ebay (founded by
Pierre Omidyar in September 1995), spending almost $50 billion in total. Although the
Internet has made auctions global and more democratic, they are no novelty and have
been found in most cultures, from antiquity onwards. This short history of auctions, their
techniques, their customers, and what they offer for sale, is designed to give
numismatists a broader understanding of a familiar and important element of their
collecting life.

Abstract:
From the 4th century BC onwards, coins of Ebusus travelled beyond the island, carried in
ships entering and leaving its port and trading over large areas of the western and
central Mediterranean. The areas and the frequency of these finds more or less coincide
with those of the amphorae of Punic Ebusus that have been the subject of research by J.
Ramón. There are, however, two exceptions to this pattern: the silver coinage of the
Second Punic War, the production of which can be associated with the need to finance
the conflict and the find-distribution of which can be related to troop-movements; and
the substantial numbers of 2nd century BC bronze coins found in Campania (Italy) and,
in particular, the locally produced imitations from Pompeii.

Abstract:
According to its author, J.-M. Doyen’s recent study on Ebusan coins found in northern
Gaul shows that as early as the first half of the Ist c. B.C., Mediterrenean bronze coins
were used as currency in this region, outside of any Roman influence. On the contrary,
the study of stratified finds makes it likely that the Roman conquest played a great part
in bringing such coins (both in bronze and silver) to northern Gaul. They can be linked
with military presence in the region, in the years following the Gallic wars.

Three gold coinages of third-century Ptolemaic Egypt / Julien Olivier & Catharine Lorber
Source:
Revue Belge de Numismatique 159 (2013) p. 49-150
Abstract:
The paper reports the results of die studies of three major Ptolemaic gold coinages of
Alexandria: the coinage in the name of the Theoi Adelphoi, featuring the jugate busts of
the two first Lagid couples; the mnaieia in the name of Arsinoe Philadelphus; and the
main issue of mnaieia depicting the radiate Ptolemy III wearing the aegis like a chlamys.
The die studies reveal a distinct pattern of production for each of these coinages.
Metallurgical analyses identify the stocks of metal used and provide new evidence for the
absolute chronology of the first two coinages. The authors also discuss other evidence
relevant to chronology, hoards and circulation, and the probable functions of the three
coinages.

More than it would seem : the use of coinage by the Romans in late Hellenistic Asia

Abstract:
This article mainly covers the period between 133 bc and the end of the Mithridatic wars
(63 bc). It challenges the view that Romans were very discreet in the East. Indeed, even
if denarii failed to circulate (but see now the overstrikes of the drachms of Philip VI
Andriscus) and positive evidence remains scarce (such as the gold staters of Flamininus
or the tetradrachms in the name of Aesillas), it is likely that Romans were active behind
a full range of civic coinages. Looking for facts, 1) die-studies are now available for
important coinages such as Ephesian cistophori, the drachms of Ariobarzanes I, the
tetradrachms of Aesillas, the First Macedonian Meris, Mithridates VI, Nicomedes IV,
Arados, and Laodicea. These die-studies allow us to correlate the level of production with
the presence of Roman armies. To this crucial information, we may add two less
significant kinds of evidence: 2) overstrikes, which sometimes allow for the development
of hypotheses about metal provenance (cistophoric tetradrachms of Ephesus and Tralles,
tetradrachms of Tenedos and Abydos), and 3) technical features which, put into
perspective, seem characteristic of a Roman production methods (brockages [Ephesus
and Nysa], letters on the obverse [Nicomedes, Lucullus, Aesillas, Oinoanda] or style of
engraving [Athens, Fimbria]). At last, we must face the existence of 4) unexpected
coinages, unlikely to have been commercial, and well adapted for use by Roman armies
(Ainianes and Oinoanda [?]). As a result, a broader and enriched panorama emerges in
which the Romans appear as the leading force behind many coinages before 63 bc, when
Pompey reorganized the monetary system to explicitly affirm Roman authority.

Abstract:
During the Roman republic, particularly in the period between the second punic war
(218-201 b.C.) to the immediate aftermath of the foundation of Colonia Augusta (21
b.C.), the Sicilian town of Tyndaris minted coins bearing marks of values and Latin
legends. This paper analyses these issues and the related bibliography. The coinage of
Tyndaris is divided into three groups, although the attribution of some of these coins to
the Tyndaris mint is not always certain.

American Journal of Numismatics 2nd ser. 20 (2008) p. 493-546, pls. 100-110
Abstract:
This article provides an overview and catalogue of third century AD gold medallions with
representations of Alexander the Great from the hoards of Tarsos in Cilicia and Aboukir
in Egypt together with related smaller medals in gold and silver. Various questions on
iconography, production, and use of these medallions from Aboukir and Tarsos are
discussed. In addition a PIXE analysis of the five specimens, now in Berlin, is provided.
Finally, these medallions are understood not as prizes awarded to victors of athletic and
other competitions at Beroia (so-called niketeria), but as gifts presented by the
Agonothetes and Makedoniarchos to high ranking visitors on the occasions of these
games in honor of the emperor and Alexander.

Abstract:
This paper presents a catalogue of the 45 coins found at the temple area of Scoglietto
(Alberese–Grosseto) during the 2010 excavation campaign. Chronologically the finds
span a long period, from the 2nd-1st century BC to the 6th century AD, providing
numismatic evidence of a longer occupation of the site compared to the results of the
first campaign. Excavation of lower levels brought to light coins of the first imperial
period, a roman republican as and a bronze coin of the last series of Elea/Velia. The
majority of coins belongs to the second half of the 3rd century and the 4th century AD.
Particularly interesting is a bronze coin of Justinian I, that provides further evidence of
the probable moment of abandonment of the site. A group of four modern coins, minted
in Florence and Siena in 16th-17th century, bear witness of a later occupation, when
several fortified towers were built along the coast as protection from pirate raids.

Abstract:
The author attributes a tremissis of the emperor Nepos from the collection of the
Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments in Split to the mint in Salona. Attention
is also drawn to similar examples and their frequent presence among the gold coins of
Nepos gathered in museum collections in Croatia, Slovenia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The existence of five groups of Salonitan dies is noted (I-V), and the mutual connections
or die links of many of the tremisses known to date from Nepos' mint in Salona are of
particular numismatic importance.

Abstract:
The article discusses various forms of the imitation of Roman coins from the 1st to the
4th centuries AD discovered in the southern Pannonian, region, particularly in the
Slavonia-Syrmia area. The list of numismatic material includes mostly individual finds
and a rare example of a horad of barbarized imitations – all gathered for the numismatic
collection of the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb. The political and economic conditions
are analyzed that led to various forms of imitating the official imperial coinage. From this
viewpoint, it was possible to differentiate the monetary influences that occurred in the
southern Pannonian area as a product of political turmoil or economic crises in other
provincial areas of the Empire, at the same time emphasizing those that had their origin
in the Pannonian and broader Danubian basin region.

Abstract:
Even though they entail different specific functions and meanings, works of coin
jewellery also manifest an ideological value that is closely linked with the celebration of
the imperial institution derived from the fact that men and women from the domus
Augusta are portrayed on these coins. From this point of view, considering the timeline
spanning from the early to mid Imperial Age, this paper aims to showcase the presence
of female portraits on coins which were reused for the creation of jewels used for
personal adornment.

Abstract:
This paper aims to clarify and explain the Roman monetary policy in the context of
transformations in the fourth century through the theoretical model of the Austrian
School of Economics. By studying monetary mutations, its causes and its consequences,
it is intended to contribute to a better comprehension of fiscal policy and social dynamics
of the period, by two specific objectives: a) understanding the basic concepts of money
and inflation, and b) understanding of monetary policy and the inflationary process
during the specified period, its causes and consequences, as well as their relationship
with socio-historical context.

Abstract:
This paper offers a preliminary model of monetary circulation in Riotinto, combining
deductive arguments, historical sources on the Iberian Pyrite Belt, a comparative
approach to Dacia and Mons Claudianus, and the analysis of coin finds. The model tries
to explain how could money –not just coins– move as investment to obtain mine
concessions, to get them up and running and to pay the running costs. Only the last
chapter, specially wage payments, could bring to the mining district the small change
needed to support the daily live of its inhabitans. Bridging the gap between the sums of
money moved in the great investments and the small change needed to pay the wages
was a structural problem managed by the Fiscus, that guaranteed that the great
investments involved some degree of cash input, simplified monetary transactions in the
district, and took the task of the physical supply of small change. Credit, scriptural
transactions, cash services and collective organization made monetary transactions
easier in all levels. The idea of a closed monetary circulation in the great imperial mines
must be revised.

Abstract:
This work analyses the distribution patterns of the Nero’s copper and brass coin in the
Roman provinces of the european West, starting from a wide sample of pieces coming
from finds. It is intended thus to get keys to understand the priorities of the Nero’s
monetary policy, and its relationship with the monetary circulation of his time. The work
has been divided into two parts. In this first part, the rhythm of the Neronian coinage is
studied, starting from the relative presence of its issues in the sample.

Abstract:
The second part of our study concerning the distribution of the Neronian “aes” in the
western coin finds is presented. In this part, we analyse the different chronological and
typological profiles that the regional sets of asses show. It is thus intended to deepen in
the understanding of the Nero’s monetary policy.

connected with the bronze issues of the mint of the North-East and Gades by Agrippa
that furnishes the chronological term for the last group of coins from Emerita.

Abstract:
Can we speak of a monetary economy beyond the boundaries of the African provinces of
the Roman Empire? Starting from the discovery of a Roman coin at Aghram Nadharif
(Fezzan), the paper aims to answer this question through a general re-examination of
numismatic evidence in Tripolitania and Fezzan. The archaeological evidence supports a
tendency towards the progressive but not homogeneous decrease of monetary
circulation going from the Mediterranean coast to the interior: while the Tripolitanian
countryside fell fully within the monetary orbit of the coastal cities, the final monetary
link in Tripolitania was represented by the limes belt. In the forts and military outposts,
which also acted as stations on the caravan routes, the coinage arriving as part of
salaries and donativa, or as a result of commercial traffic, unlikely spread beyond the
surrounding vici: the dense settlements in the predesert of the large widian did not
develop a genuine monetary economy. The penetration of Roman coinage beyond this
boundary belt to the Garamantian area delineated another monetary isohypse: however,
the Garamantian economy could not have been fully monetary in the classic sense of the
word. Finally, in order to understand the role of imported coinage in the Garamantian
kingdom, the research extends its horizon to other African states and tribal entities with
which the Garamantes should come into contact in the complex Saharan network of
long-distance caravan trade.

Abstract:
The Gallo-Roman villa at Champ de Saint-Éloi in Merbes-le-Château (Belgium) lies by the
river Sambre, at the eastern limit of the civitas Nerviorum. During the 2nd and 3rd
centuries it was constituted of and imposing dwelling with adjacent buildings for
economic functions and ornamental structures. A hoard of precious items was recovered
inside the main building, in a small semi-buried room. It consists of two copper-allied
caldrons and of a small casket containing two silver spoons, a purse with 122 silver
antoniniani, a glass flask and four worn sestertii deposited on a plaque dedicated to the
Danubian Riders. This copper-allied tinned plaque is remarkable for its rarity in the
western provinces as for the high technical degree quality of its decoration. The
originality of the hoard, buried in the 260s AD, comes from its heterogeneous contents:
daily and precious items and a religious object are mixed.

composition of these blanks complete this study by assigning a monetary series, serie II.

compensate for the lack of reliable contemporary literary and iconographic sources that
could approach it.

Abstract:
The origin of the victoriatus as it has been cited by literary sources (“ex Illyrico
advectus”, “peregrinus nummus”) is re-examined through numismatic evidence, based
especially on metrological data and coin circulation. One point can be made by the rather
puzzling fact that the presence of victoriati in coin hoards and stray finds is minimal in
the present-day Balkan Peninsula. Moreover, it is argued that the introduction of the
victoriatus has to be viewed more closely in historical context, associated to a specific
turning point of the Second Punic War ―the fall of Capua in 211 BC. Applying a revised
interpretation to the victoriate coin series sheds new light upon the paucity of the finds
in the area across the Adriatic Sea, alongside with the eventual abandonment of
production (ca. 170-165 BC). The relaunch from the late 2nd century BC onwards of
victoriate issues denoting another monetary denomination (quinarius or half-denarius)
provides further understanding, gained with the assistance of literary and epigraphical
testimony. Furthermore, the circumstances under which a certain rare issue of Roman
victoriati and quinarii was struck at Corcyra (RRC 101) are viewed within a broader set
of events and a new chronology is proposed for this emission (ca. 199 BC).

Currency, bullion and accounts : monetary modes in the Roman world / Koenraad

Revue Belge de Numismatique 155 (2009) p. 91-121
Abstract:
It is the contention of this paper that the instrumental-functional approach which most
scholars take to the role of money in the Roman world leads to a dead end. I argue
instead that money can be analyzed more fruitfully as a social construct or a social
institution in itself. The important question is not what the functions were of coinage or
whether Roman credit notes may be considered as monetary instruments, but how the
deep monetization of transactions was achieved in the Roman world. Monetized
transactions are essentially exchange relations in which entitlements to goods or
services change hands after the prior attribution of abstract or at least non specific
quantifiable values to the goods or services in question. The transactions as such may be
institutionalized in various ways depending on the cultural, social and economic
(sub)context. I will focus on “monetary modes”. These are sets of instruments
(monetary, financial and other) and procedures to handle monetized transactions. The
currency mode in the Roman world was characterized by the abundance of coins, the
use of which was facilitated by deposit bankers. In the High Empire, gold coin expanded
the reach of the currency mode to large payments. The commodity mode was important
primarily under the Republic for gold bullion. Monetized transactions were only in
exceptional circumstances handled through the transfer of commodities. Private credit
rationing emerged as an important monetary mode in the Late Republic. It profoundly
determined and expanded the monetization of transactions, but did not result in the
development of credit or fiat money. Because debts notes never became freely
transferable, transaction costs were too high. The notes remained instruments.

Abstract:
This article is the first systematic study of the cistophori of Nerva and Trajan, which were
struck in AD 97 and 98. It includes a catalogue, with detailed references, a commentary
on the types used, and an analysis of the metrology of the series. Close consideration of
the system underlying the production of these cistophori brings to light clear parallels
with the contemporary imperial coinage and suggests that they were, in all probability,
struck at the mint of Rome and shipped to Asia Minor. An appendix systematically
considers two separate series of typologically related «cistophoric» coins with Greek
legends, issued by Trajan.

The influx of Roman coins to the West Balt culture environment / Anna Zapolska

Notae Numismaticae 8 (2013) p. 105-116
Abstract:
The influx of Roman coins to the territory of Barbaricum settlement started at the
beginning of the Marcomannic Wars. From the 160s appeared here denarii and gold coins
multitudinously. Roman coins – most notably, large bronzes (sestertii) – start to appear
in the territory settled by West Balt communities and in the area of the Vistula delta in
connection with the amber trade. The sestertii finds suggest, that they would have
originated from the area of northern Italia, been carried through the provinces on the
Rhine to the North Sea from where they were transported by sea. Because sailing
around the Jutland Peninsula was too unsafe, the route continued down fjords, with a
short stage overland, and then over the Baltic Sea all the way to the Vistula delta, the
coast of the Sambian Peninsula or the Curonian Lagoon. The end of the influx of the
bronze coins came in the 260s and may be attributed to the political and economic crisis
of the latter half of the 3rd century, disruption of the trade routes and links between
provinces and, at the same time, the discontinuation of issue of the bronze senatorial
coinage.

Une approche contextuelle des potins nerviens 'au rameau' du type A : l’apport du site
du 'Mont-à-Henry' à Ittre (Brabant wallon, Belgique) / Jean-Marc Doyen
Source:
Journal of Archæological Numismatics 2 (2012) p. 31-126
Abstract:
The excavations at ‘Mont-à-Henry’, Ittre, in the Belgian province of West Brabant,
yielded four Gaulish coins in an archaeological context with a large amount of pottery
hitherto dated to the Augustan period (see infra, p. 1-30); a reinterpretation of the
chronology is therefore necessary. Three other coins are ‘au rameau A’ potins, produced
by the Belgian tribe of the Nervii (Sch. 190, cl. IV). Until recently they were regarded as
a typical late production of the region between the rivers Sambre and the Meuse
controlled by the Atuatuci before the Gallic War. They were considered as largely
postdating the Conquest, with a circulation period as late as the Julio-Claudian or even
Flavian dynasty. Until recently pottery associated with this coin type was invariably
dated after 30 bc, but a critical examination of the chronological data from a large
number of contexts indicates a very different position. The ‘au rameau A’ potins actually
appear at the end of LT D1b, c. 90 bc and disappear rapidly from circulation by c. 55/50
bc at the latest. Later finds attributed to the reign of Augustus show that they had lost
their monetary status by then. The ‘potin au rameau’ Sch 190, cl. IV can now be
considered as a reliable chronological indicator for the LT D1b/D2a period between 80/70
and 50 bc; occupation at “Mont-à-Henry” should be seen as belonging to the same
period even if typological comparisons for pottery seem to indicate a more recent date.

Abstract:
Much has been made of the presence or absence of seventh- and eighth-century coinson
several sites in Greece, primarily in Athens and Corinth. Kenneth Setton and Peter
Charanis have paved the way for a cultural-historical interpretation of coin finds, but
athorough comparison of both single and hoard finds from Greece with others from
theBalkans suggests a very different interpretation. Instead of signalising decline, lowdenomination coins, especially from Athens, may point to local markets of lowvaluecommodities, such as food, as well as to the permanent presence of the fleet.

Abstract:
The coin in question was discovered several years ago in Solin (Roman Salona). This is a
quarter siliqua of the Ostrogothic King Baduila (Totila) with the reverse legend
Invictissimus avtor, yet another coin in this rare and unusual Ostrogothic series, and the
only example known to the present with the name of the emperor Justinian on the
obverse. The article only briefly discusses the scarce historical data and instead
concentrates on the analysis of the numismatic characteristics of the newly discovered
coin, and also the series to which it belongs. The background to the research involves an
attempt to illuminate the historical reasons and causes for the creation of the
Invictissimus series as well as the possibilities of establishing its chronological position
within the still poorly known monetary system of Totila.

Face value or bullion value? : early Byzantine coins beyond the Lower Danube border /

Source:
Byzantine coins in Central Europe between the 5th and 10th century / ed. by Marcin
Wołoszyn. - Kraków : Polska Akademia Umiejętności, 2009. - P. 449-471
Abstract:
The author discusses the presence of early Byzantine bronze coins in the territories north
of the Lower Danube border and attempts to explain the relations between the Empire
and the populations outside the border which led to the arrival of bronze coins in the
area between the rivers Tisza and Dniester. Previous interpretations pointing to intense
economic relations are challenged and instead the author proposes a different approach,
showing that different regions outside the border followed distinct patterns. It is
suggested that except for the area close to the Danube there did not exist a true
monetary circulation and the face value of coins was insignificant. Instead, coins were
used for their intrinsic value, being melted to produce bronze objects such as fibulae. It
is argued that the high presence of folles in “Barbaricum” and the scarcity of small
denominations, along with the large number of molds and associated objects used to
produce bronze items are important arguments in favor of this interpretation. The author
draws a comparison between the Lower Danube provinces and “Barbaricum” and
concludes that the presence of coins outside the border paralleled the evolution of coin
flow in the Byzantine provinces. Based on this fact it is argued that political and military
developments in 'Barbaricum', heretofore considered as having the main impact on the
coin flow, are mostly irrelevant, as internal mechanisms in the provinces regulated the
arrival of coins in “Barbaricum”. Without offering any final pronouncements, the study
aims to draw the line between the two characteristics, face value and bullion value, in
the territories beyond the Danube border.

Abstract:
The evolution of the monetary system between the seventh eighth centuries, was
characterized by the perseverance of several processes: reducing the mass of gold which
served as a stock, reduced weight, and especially less gold content of coins. Along with
this, the gradual disintegration of the tax system, always fragile and closely linked to the
elements that control and organize the superstructure of the regnum Visigothorum by a
complex set of interdependent relationships. However, the currency kept some of the
features that characterized the Empire: the nature of taxation, and commercial features,
especially concentrated in urban areas.

Abstract:
Visigothic times the monetary productive organization is articulated around several
provinces. This is based also on urban mints, and reduced production in a large number
of officinae, especially in the northern of Iberian Peninsula. associated with the difficulty
of taxation arrangements in some areas. We can distinguish the existence of a fiscal
structure which relies largely peripheral in the establishment of a policy agreement
between the Rex and Potentiores, with a link in small settlements, which differs from the
situation in areas of greater state control, as is in the Betica province or Carthaginensis.

Abstract:
Silver hoards of Scandinavian character are arguably the most important archaeological
source for Viking activity in the North West. They give a clear impression of the vast
pools of silver wealth acquired by the Vikings through plunder and exchange, but why
were they concealed in the irst place? What do they reveal about the uses of silver in
Viking society? And, what can they tell us about Scandinavian activity and settlement in
north-west England more broadly? In this chapter, I aim to address such questions by
examining the hoards’ contents and location, as well as their relationship with single inds
from the region.

Summary:
The aim of this paper is to discuss the monetary use and function of the AngloScandinavian coinages, especially the Sigtuna coinage. In the early days of numismatic
research their status among other Viking-age and early medieval coinages was not
clearly understood, nor was it clear how they should be classified. Today, their status as
Scandinavian imitations of English coins – minted in Viking towns such as Sigtuna and
Lund – has been recognized. Their numismatic classification has recently been
accomplished by meticulous die-studies, but the question of how they were used as
means of payment remains unresolved. It is suggested that the coinages did not
necessarily have a nominal value, but an officially sanctioned exchange-value, which
could only be reckoned and valued by weight and not by number. In such a monetary
system, which had both elements of a coin-based and a bullion-based economy,
weighing was probably the only way in which to settle the exchange-value. The
archaeological evidence from the Sigtuna mint seems to suggest that the Sigtuna coins
were weighed with oblate spheroid weights. These weights follow the Islamic mitqal
standard. It is also argued that at some stage in the bullion economy, coined silver was
preferred to hack-silver in transactions. Because of that there might have existed a
similar situation in the transactional sphere in the Viking Age, as later during the Middle
Ages, whereby different qualities of silver were recognized and valued according to
different exchange-rates. This change in the transactional sphere had probably been
prompted by the arrival of Western European silver coins to Scandinavia at the turn of
the first millennium AD.Finally, the Anglo-Scandinavian coinages probably did not have
any monetary value outside the strongholds in which they were minted. They were
intended for use only by people visiting the town and using its market.

Abstract:
Both the period fakes which were made at the time when the Visigoth coinage was in
circulation and the many later imitations are analyzed. It can be observed that the
period fakes are relatively few in the corpus of Visigoth coins, probably indicating that
falsification of coins was not a widespread phenomenon as would be the actual
manipulation of the metal for other purposes and it against the later that the laws of the
time are directed. By contrast modern currency counterfeiting of Visigoth coinage are
abundant and we can establish a chronological evolution, from the inventions of the
eighteenth century to the latest contemporary and increasingly accurate copies.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The final period of the Visigoth Kingdom of Toledo is analyzed from the reign of Wamba
in the context of his various attempts at strengthening the monarchy against other
powers. This fact has its obvious reflection in the coinage, because unlike the previous
period, it very consciously harks back to Byzantine models by iconographically adopting
the imperial insignia of power, nevertheless, the very importance given to the ritual
anointing of royalty based on the biblical model is clearly pointing to the increasingly
important role of the Church in the election of the king in a progressively weakened
monarchy. Also, the later years of regnum, the events that took place after the death of
Witiza, are examined by contrasting the limited and problematic literary evidence with
the information provided by the coins of the time.

Abstract:
The whole Carolingian denarii collection kept at the Cabinet des Médailles of the
Bibliothèque nationale de France struck in Italy between 781 and 822 under
Charlemagne and Louis the Pious has been analysed, as well as some later issues minted
between 822 and 855. The analysis revealed an enduring increase in the silver fineness
of the coins struck by the two rulers between 781 and 822, followed by a slight decrease
during the second part of Louis’ reign (822-840) that continued under Lothar (840-855).
The results obtained also showed the particularity ofthe coins struck at Venice in the
name of Louis the Pious from 818 to 822, even though the citywas theoretically under
Byzantine rule: these denarii are less fine than the other ones, and differ also regarding
the content of some minor and trace elements.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In 1958 a cluster of gold and silver coins together with some fragments of a jar, came to
light. Tlhe evidence of the latest coins points to a date of 1410-1412. The hoard consists
of 188 gold coins, 2358 silver coins and 1 silver clasp. The silver coins are nearly all
from the Netherlands, mostly from Flanders and Guelders. But of the gold coins, 40
pieces, more than a quarter of their value are foreign. This hoard is of twofold
importance. Not only does it contain many rare and even unknown coins, but the
exceptionally large quantity allowsa careful examination of weight and alloy and even a
statistical analysis.

Abstract:
The classification currently proposed for the silver coins with a diameter of 40-45 mm
issued by the mints of Mantua and Casale Monferrato shows important limits. It can be
demonstrated that the names of ducatone, tallero and scudo have often been assigned
by the previous authors arbitrarily, without a critical analysis of numismatic and archival
documentation. A more careful consideration of the available documents allows now to
propose an accurate denomination for almost all these coins and a clear position in the
monetary systems of the Duchies of Mantua and Monferrat.

Abstract:
The authors give notice to have identified, in a private collection, the Bargellino, one of
the most enigmatic coins issued by the mint of Florence in the first semester of 1316,
during the tyranny of the bargello Lando da Gubbio. Based on the Cronica by Giovanni
Villani and on the ‘Fiorinaio’, or ‘Book of the Mint of Florence’, preserved at the State
Archives of the Tuscan town, until now many scholars had suggested its existence but
the coin was never identified. It is the first grosso da 6 issued by the mint of Florence.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes the religious and symbolic meanings and the legitimating role of the
hexagram (or King Solomon’s Seal) appearing on a coin type from the Hammudí Caliph
Idris [II], struck in 438/1046-1047 with a die bearing the mint name of al-Andalus. To
do this, the Seal of Solomon is contextualized within Islamic iconographic symbols; its
use in earlier, contemporary and later Islamic coins is also considered. As will be shown,
the hexagram has a clear legitimating and propitiatory function attached to the coin
issue itself as well as to the caliph.

Abstract:
The typology of the copper coinage of the Mamlūk sultan Lājīn is modified in the light of
the discovery of a new type and the rediscovery of a forgotten type. Archaeologically
derived numismatic data is examined to raise questions about the origin of these coins
and their circulation.

Abstract:
A rare purse of late 10th century silver cut dirham fractions exemplifies the evolution in
the use of small money in the Medieval Middle East: the copper fulus, dissappeared as
small-currency in the Abbasid Empire at the end of the ninth century. They were
replaced by cut silver fragments referred to as al-Dahārim almutaqatti‘a as mentioned in
the Cairo Geniza. Eventually the cut silver was replaced in the 11-12th centuries by cut
gold fragments.

Al-Qantara 27 (2006) 2 p. 477-527
Abstract:
First, we examine some unregistered Almohad and Post-Almohad coins, and discuss the
attribution or reading of some others. As a result a discussion of a hypothesis on Idris alMa'mun's silver coins is offered and some new items are added to the numismatic corpus
of Western Islam. This work leads us to a general overview of the Islamic discourse
prevailing in Islamic Spain and North Africa after the so-called Almohad revolution.
Considering this discourse as a dynamic work in progress, we focus on a number of
issues: (1) the Qur'ānic aim of eternal life as a touchstone in the Almohad system of
ideas, (2) the issue whether salvation is possible without actual human guides, (3) the
evolution from negative to affirmative theology, (4) the ties binding the numismatic
discourse and the Almohad and Post-Almohad ruling classes.

Rebuilding the contexts of the Andalusi epigraphic legacy : 'the Friend of God' in the
Almoravid numismatic discourse / Salvador Peña Martín, Miguel Vega Martín

Trans 10 (2006) p. 73-83
Abstract:
The Arabic phrase 'Wali Allah' (the Friend of God) is included among the epigraphic
legends displayed in the coins issued by the Almoravids (Murabitun) during the first
decades of the 12th century AC (6th century AH), in al-Andalus (Islamic Spain) and North
Africa. Although the sequence, normally referred to the Almoravid Emir, 'Ali ibn Yusuf,
poses no problems of translation in its lexical and syntactic levels, its actual intended
meaning within the Almoravid legitimacy discourse reveals itself as a challenge, mostly
because of its ambiguity. This paper offers a reconstruction of the different contexts
involved in the phrase.

Abstract:
The Berber dynasty of the Zirids, the rulers of the Taifa kingdom of Granada (Spain),
issued several series of dirhams that reveal a prominent feature —the lack of any
metrological pattern. We first catalogue and describe examples of such pieces housed in
different museums in southern Spain and in some private collections, and consequently
stress the fact that the Zirids never issued real coins. This claim is viewed from a
broader double perspective: the numismatic history of Western Islam and the common
space of the Islamic medieval world. As a result of our study, we maintain that the
historian and the archaeologist must distinguish between two different policies in
numismatic issues, depending on whether the implementation of metrological patterns
allows us to speak of real coins or not. Of the latter, the numismatic issues of the
«party-kings» of the Taifa-states are an outstanding instance.

Abstract:
In this article we present a monetary hoard found in Écija (Seville, Spain), composed of
four dinars minted in the Iberian Peninsula under the rule of the Umayyad Governors. All
of them belong to the Latin Epigraphic Group, with a Latin legend on both sides. They
are traditionally known as indictional dinars since they present the indiction as the
central legend on the reverse. Of the coins studied, only one belongs to the X Indiction,
equivalent to the year 93 H. (711-712); the remainder were struck during the XI
Indiction, year 94 H. (712-713). In this study, aside from classifying the coins, we have
summarised the scarce bibliography about this topic, offering a new perspective and
focus on this particular Moslem-Arabic coinage.

Abstract:
An important numismatic hoard was found in Priego de Cordoba (Spain) in 1959 and is
now kept in the Archaeological Museum of Cordoba, where it remains unrestored and
unclassified. It contains several thousand Almohad silver pieces, struck during the 12 th
and 13th centuries AD, and offers an extraordinary data base for the study of dynastic,
urban, artistic, economic and ideological aspects of Islamic Spain. Some religious
implications of Almohad coins, considered as icons and pieces of the legitimacy discourse
in a theocratic state, are explored in this paper.

Abstract:
The study of four examples of square silver coins permits us to add four new
unregistered items to the numismatic catalogues of the Almohad, Mu’minid, Marinid and
Nasrid issues. On the other hand, the four mintmarks under examination show the range
of problems posed by these epigraphs on Almohad and post-Almohad coins: (1)
ambiguous reading, (2) different names of places involved, (3) unknown names of
places, and (4) an unexpected place name on a particular coin within its historical
framework.

Abstract:
A huge hoard of Almohad silver coins was found in Priego de Cardaba (Spain) some
decades ago and is now kept in the Archeological Museum of Cardaba. Among its
thousands of pieces there is one, a half dirham, which bears the name of Priego as
minting place. Alter some considerations on the relevance of Priego during the Almohad
period, we conclude with a linguistic analysis of the Arabic writing of the name. Our
conclusion is that the alternative spellings for Priego reflect the difficulties to reproduce
the pre-Arabic name 'Pego''.

Abstract:
The Frankish rural settlement in the Latin East differed radically from the western
seigneurial model. These differences seem to have resulted in a rural economic system
where the use of a wide variety of coined moneys was highly developed. Charters that
record money transactions in rural areas of the Kingdom of Jerusalem and in particular
coin finds from archaeological excavations of the Frankish villeneuves of Parva
Mahumeria and Bethgibelin, demonstrate that petty cash circulated in ample quantities
in these rural settlements.

The Crusader copper reading TVRRIS DAVIT was once considered an emergency issue
struck during Saladin’s siege of Jerusalem in 1187, and later was attributed to the short
lordship of Raymond III of Tripoli over Beirut in 1184–1186. The recent excavation of a
specimen at the Crusader stronghold of Mezad Ateret—destroyed in 1179—points to a
new mint location and date.

Abstract:
In Western monetary tradition, the value of currency is linked to the value of the
quantity of precious metal contained in the coin(s), but in Chinese tradition, the currency
is only a tool of exchange without intrinsic value. This fiduciary conception of currency
has been the origin of the use of many types of objects (cowries, spades, knives, cash,
plates, etc.) and materials (stone, bone, copper, lead, iron, paper, wood, bamboo, cloth,
grains, etc.) as medium of exchange. After the irruption of Spanish Silver bullion from
America from the late 16th century onwards, the traditional Chinese monetary system
progressively collapsed.

Revue des Archéologues et Historiens d'Art de Louvain 30 (1997) p. 137-149
Abstract:
A critical review of Marie-Louise Vollenweider, Les portraits grecs du Cabinet des
Médailles, Paris, 1995, dealing with the lack of up-to-dated bibliography, the way
hypotheses become facts, the dangers of pyschological interpretations as well as the use
of stylistic arguments to date, the propension to attribute everything, the way to see
kings in the guise of gods (numismatists are by far less enthusiasts on that), the danger
to interpretate monograms or letters as names of engravers, and the necessity to
consider all the dies making monetary comparisons. Concrete examples discussed here
include: Mithridates Eupator, Perseus of Macedonia, Rhodes, menads, Alexander the
Great [wrongly recognized under the traits of Herakles], Philip V [and Polyrhenia],
Antiochus III, the engravers Nikias and Sosis, the kings of Elymais [Tiraios, Attambelos],
Ariarathes IX of Cappadocia.
