GUIDELINES ON THE HEALTH RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH THE HEAT AND AMOUNT OF TIME SPENT IN A SAUNA AND TURKISH BATH (STEAM ROOM) We would advise all gym users to seek advice from their GP on their physical condition before using the sauna and steam room facilities. The FINNISH SAUNA takes place in a wooden environment with a raised temperature of 60 °C with special heat-generating stoves. It is advisable to follow a Finnish Sauna with a cold shower. The TURKISH BATH takes place in a steam room, a very humid environment where the humidity level reaches 90% to 100%. The inside temperature ranges between 40° to 60°C. Due to the high humidity levels, a higher level of perspiration occurs than in the sauna. PLEASE TAKE CARE: Do not stay in longer than is comfortable and stay hydrated. We advise that you pay attention to your own sense of well-being and your personal level of heat tolerance. A warning sign of excessive heat is pulsating temples. Should this occur, please leave the sauna and cool off. Please do not enter the sauna or Turkish bath on an empty stomach but eat something at least an hour before. BENEFITS OF A SAUNA OR TURKISH BATH: -after intense physical activity to eliminate toxins and lactic acid from the body -to alleviate muscle injuries and joint pain for its beneficial relaxing and pain relief effects -It assists respiratory issues such as sinusitis, bronchitis and chronic rhinitis. THE BENEFITS OF HEAT ON THE BODY Using a sauna is a rejuvenating and invigorating experience. The heat caused by both the above activities helps to eliminate toxins from the body through increased perspiration, which in turn improves the tone and elasticity of the skin. It serves to relax muscles and improve the body’s metabolism and it has beneficial effects on the respiratory and nervous systems. It is however untrue that saunas and Turkish baths assist in weight loss. Heat does not have any effect on fatty tissues but does favour body cleansing and the removal of toxins through the elimination of liquids. Following a sauna /Turkish bath, we advise you reintegrate liquids to maintain an optimal balance between body mass and body volume. WE DO NOT ADVISE USE OF THE SAUNA AND TURKISH BATH: -For those suffering with high or low blood pressure due to the rapid dilation of blood vessels caused by the high temperatures -For those suffering from heart or circulatory problems. The sudden loss of fluids and minerals may cause arrhythmia symptoms and palpitations -For those who have a high temperature because it can further raise the body temperature -For those suffering from fungal skin diseases, sores or wounds as they are likely to transmit the infection to other users and worsen their own symptoms. -In the presence of varicose veins PRECAUTIONS AND CONTRAINDICATIONS –We advise guests to undergo a medical check-up prior to participating in any fitness activity or using any of the Spa’s heat or steam facilities. –Pay attention to your personal heat tolerance level. A warning sign of excessive heat on the body are pulsating temples. If you avert this symptom, we advise that you leave the sauna or Turkish bath and cool down by taking a shower. –Never enter the sauna on an empty stomach. It is advisable to eat something at least an hour before entering. Always replenish lost liquids by drinking water, fruit or vegetable juices. -During pregnancy as the heat can cause contractions or placental and foetal distress -During the menstrual cycle as it increases the risk of a heavier flow -During puberty as it may affect development -For those suffering from migraine attacks. ***** -For those taking antihistamines, anticoagulants, vasoconstrictors, vasodilators, stimulants, tranquillisers or any other medication which makes the potential user unsure as to the advisability of using the sauna/steam room.
