who has always portrayed the absolute allure of the Woman with unquestionable style
and sensual elegance.

eone Frollo’s comics
have been read all
around the world. The
cartoonist, known for his sensual and evocative mark,
received particular notice
both by public and critics starting from the Seventies.
He made his debut in 1948 –
after having graduated in
architecture – in the university magazine “Il Risveglio”

Europa, i fumetti di
Leone Frollo. Conosciuto per il suo segno elegantemente sensuale ed evocativo, il disegnatore ebbe un
particolare successo di critica
e di pubblico a partire dagli
anni Settanta.
Il debutto avvenne nel 1948,
dopo la laurea in architettura,
sul giornalino scolastico Il

with the western “Sui Grandi
Laghi” (On great lakes). He
turned to the English market,
between the Fifties and
Sixties, where he made use of
his undoubted stylistic talent
to draw war episodes and love
stories. He then worked for
the “Corriere dei Piccoli” and
for other Italian newspapers.
Since 1971, thanks to the
publisher Renzo Barbieri, he
began dedicating himself to
national-popular erotism with
his “soft-core” pocket-size
adventures (naked breasts
only were allowed!) of
Lucifera, a dark-haired shedevil with muddy eyes and a
raunchy body, who had made
her return in the common
world to tempt Faust –portrayed as a young man of
robust good looks – under
Satan’s order, who defines her
“darling harlot of the
underworld”. And who would
not want to fall victim of such
a tempting enchantress?
The following year, with
scripts by Rubino Ventura,
Frollo began dedicating himself to adult fables and presented an ingenuously sexy
Snow White (forget about the
soppy protagonist of the
famous Walt Disney Picture
film) surrounded by a lewd
stepmother and by seven
vicious dwarfs. Her typical
features: a fringe, plaits,
pretty blue eyes and attractive
full lips. But, what captured
the public imagination where
her large breasts with those
proud nipples and that unbelievable bottom. The allusive
and sardonic stories of Snow
White were extremely successful for years. The character,
reprinted several times, contributed to building the fame
of the “Master of Rialto”. A
nickname linked to the fact
that the cartoonist was born
Risveglio con la storia

L’indubbia capacità stilistica
fu utilizzata in seguito sul
mercato inglese, tra gli anni
Cinquanta e Sessanta, per
realizzare episodi bellici e
love stories a quadretti. In
seguito collaborò con Il
Corriere dei Piccoli ed altri
periodici nazionali.
Dal 1971, per merito dell’editore Renzo Barbieri, si
dedicò all’erotismo nazionalpopolare con le avventure
soft (solo i seni nudi erano
permessi!) in formato tascabile di Lucifera, diavolessa
dalla chioma corvina, gli
occhi torbidi, il fisico conturbante, tornata nel nostro
mondo per tentare, su ordine
di Satana che la definisce
“prediletta baldracca degli
Inferi”, un Faust ridiventato
prestante giovanotto. E chi
non vorrebbe cadere vittima di
questa sinuosa ammaliatrice?
L’anno successivo, su sceneggiature di Rubino Ventura,
Frollo inaugurò il filone delle
fiabe per adulti. Presentando
un’ingenuamente sexy Biancaneve (scordatevi la zuccherosa protagonista del celebre
film di Walt Disney) circondata da lussuriosa matrigna e
dai sette nani viziosi. Le sue
prerogative erano la frangetta, le trecce, gli occhi azzurri
da bambolona, l’invitante
bocca carnosa. Ma soprattutto furono le tette grosse dai
capezzoli arroganti e il fondoschiena imperiale a rimanere
nell’immaginario collettivo.
Le storie allusive, sempre beffarde, di Biancaneve spopolarono per moltissimi anni. Il
personaggio, più volte ristampato, contribuì alla popolarità del definito “Maestro di
Rialto”. Perché nella zona più
antica della città lagunare, il
disegnatore è nato e ancora

risiede.
Dopo Lucifera, la consacrazione arrivò con un altro
pocket, nel 1975, intitolato
alla duchessa Naga Romanoff. La sofisticata russa
affrontava di petto (abbondante) i partner, esibiva le
chiappe tornite, dimostrandosi sfacciata negli approcci.
Figlia dello zar Nicola II,
ebbe l’onore d’essere sverginata dal monaco Rasputin.
Naga sapeva cosa fa girare il
mondo: il sesso. Anche bizzarro, mercenario o politico.
Come quando ricevette la
visita d’un sussiegoso Adolf
Hitler che credeva farle pesare l’onore d’averlo come partner. «Non puoi insegnare ad
una Romanoff come trattare
un caporale!» gli sbatté in
faccia. E anche il mediocre
amatore Baffetto fu servito.
Nel 1977 presentò “L’orrenda
storia di Dracula Bambino” e
poi i brevi serial del 1979-80
dedicati a Fan, eroe fantasy, e
alla straripante vampira Yra,
ambientato nel Medio Evo.
Quindi, in Casino (1985)
costruì, su sceneggiature di
Ventura, ambientazioni ed
atmosfere del periodo storico, la Belle Epoque, che gli
riusciva più congeniale. Nella
casa di tolleranza Maison
Blanche gestita da Madame
Con, sfileranno clienti maniaci o inibiti e floride pensionanti pronte a qualsiasi turpitudine, inarrivabili per originalità.
Tra collaborazioni alle riviste
Glamour International, Playboy, Playmen, Frollo decise
di creare, nel 1988, una eroina tutta sua: la bostoniana
Mona Street, pubblicata dalle
edizioni Glamour e Lancio.
Femminista degli anni Venti,
l’occhio furbetto, la bocca
spesso imbronciata, si lasciava spupazzare giocando alla
Glamour and Lancio editions. A feminist of the

and an often sulky mouth.
She let herself be fondled by
playing the part of the victim.
An incredibly malicious babe
surrounded by wimpish Yankees or by a craving noble
Venetian man belonging to a
sect of puritans willing to punish lascivious ladies. She was
Frollo’s last character, as he
stopped working on the very
comics that brought to him so
many satisfactions (since the
prices he won had nothing to
do with his comics but with
cinema. At the Montecatini
Festival, in 1964 and in 1970,
he won the trophy with a number of documentaries produced
with his colleague Stelio
Fenzo).
He then dedicates himself to
watercolour to portray female
beauty in an unveiled, yet never
coarse but rather lewd way. An
enthralling temptation that, by
means of allusive images,
attempts to satisfy our hidden
voyeur, to let us admire unveiled
ravishing beauties (collected in the
recent anthological edition Liens de
Femme - Bagheera Editeur, Parigi
2000 e Le donne di Leone Frollo
- Lo Scarabeo, Torino 2003).
A broad, slightly more erotic,
selection of his women was proposed during the short-lived
experience of the Museum of erotic art in Venice.
I wanted to define the artist in
the volume ‘The Erotic Art of
Leone Frollo’ (in the edition
Glittering Images edizioni d’essai), 1990, with the following
words “The cartoonist who
loves women”, pardon my own
quotation. I thought it would
have been the perfect definition
for an artist who has always
portrayed the absolute allure of
the Woman with unquestionable style and sensual elegance.

simpatica adescatrice ogni
volta impunita. Una sventola
dall’imbattibile carica maliziosa, circondata da imbranati maschietti yankee o da un
voglioso nobile veneziano,
appartenente ad una setta di
moralisti decisi a punire le
dame di coscia allegra.
Sarà l’ultimo suo personaggio, perché Frollo abbandonò i fumetti che pur gli
hanno dato numerosissime
soddisfazioni. (Fatalità perché i premi a lui assegnati
non riguardano i comics ma il
cinema a passo ridotto: al
Festival di Montecatini vinse
il trofeo nel 1964 e nel 1970
presentando alcuni documentari realizzati assieme al
collega Stelio Fenzo). In
seguito, si dedica all’acquarello per rappresentare la bellezza femminile svelata eppure mai sguaiata, semmai impudica. Una coinvolgente tentazione che, attraverso allusive
immagini, vuole accontentare
il voyeur nascosto in noi, farci
ammirare incantevoli grazie
svelate ( Raccolte nelle recenti
antologiche Liens de Femme Bagheera Editeur, Parigi 2000
e Le donne di Leone Frollo Lo Scarabeo, Torino 2003).

in più venne proposta durante
l’effimera esperienza del
Museo d’arte erotica a Venezia.

and actually lives in the oldest area of the lagoon city.
After Lucifera, he achieved
great success in 1975 with
another pocket-size cartoon
titled under the name of
Duchess Naga Romanoff. The
sophisticated Russian, with
her large chest, well-rounded
buttocks, used to “get to
grips” with her partners in a
cheeky way. Daughter of Tsar
Nicholas II, she had the
honour of being deflowered
by Monk Rasputin. Naga
knew what made the world
go round: it was sex. Even a
queer, mercenary or political
one. Like when a pompous
Adolf Hitler paid visit to her
convinced that she would feel
embarrassed of having such a
prestigious guest. «You cannot teach a Romanoff how to
treat a corporal!» she shouted
at him. There! And she was
done also with the mediocre
lover with a moustache.
In 1977 Frollo presented ‘The
horrendous story of Baby
Dracula’ and then, between
1979 and 1980, it was the
turn of the short serial dedicated to ‘Fan’, a fantasy hero,
and to the bursting she-vampire ‘Yra’, set in the Middle
Ages. In ‘Casino’ (1985),
with scripts by Ventura, he
gave life to settings and atmospheres of the historical
period which was most congenial to him, the Belle Epoque.
In the house of tolerance
Maison Blanche managed by
Madame Con, maniac and
inhibited clients and buxom
old ladies ready to any turpitude, unequalled in originality, make their appearance.
After having cooperated with
magazines like Glamour,
Playboy and Playmen, Frollo
decided to give life, in 1988,
to his own heroine: Mona
Street, published by the

LATE TITIAN AND THE SENSUALITY OF PAINTING
Titian’s late production has often not been duly recognised and valued with respect to his early works and to those of
his maturity. Yet, by looking carefully at “La Pietà” (1576), his last masterpiece housed in the Gallerie dell’Accademia,
one can notice that in some parts of the painting there are ten overlapping layers of colour revealing the use of repeated strokes, above all in the central part of the painting were the figures of the mother and child are portrayed. That
intense work “underneath the painting” testifies to the use of an incredibly new way of painting, as stressed by the superintendent Giovanna Nepi Scirè who has done much to bring to the Gallerie the twenty-eight masterpieces painted by
Titian between 1550 till 1576, date of his death. And it is in the mid-16th century that the illustrious artist Titian Vecellio,
successor of Bellini and Giorgione, “prophet” of painting, discovers a new way of painting characterised by a rapid
and free spread of colour which he paints with various layers on the canvas with thick strokes and through which shapes are disentangled, thus stressing on the one side the sensuality and on the other, paradoxically at the same time,
an intense spirituality. It is the invention of what is called “pittura a macchia” (patchy painting) – term coined by the
great critic Vasari – which, from then on, enabled painting to take new and unexpected courses. Numerous critics
agree that Titian’s late painting resembles and anticipates, to some extent, the painting of Dvoràk or of some of the
most outstanding artists of the late nineteenth century, including Rubens, Rembrandt, Delacroix and the Expressionists.
The exhibition is organised in three sections –dedicated to portraits, profane themes and sacred paintings – displaying
marvellous works exceptionally borrowed by the greatest museums of the world.

La produzione ultima di Tiziano è stata spesso incompresa e considerata meno importante rispetto alle opere giovanili e della maturità. In realtà, se si guarda “La Pietà” (1576), il suo ultimo capolavoro che è custodito alle Gallerie dell’Accademia, si può notare che esistono delle zone con addirittura dieci strati di colore sovrapposto che attestano continue riprese e ripassature, soprattutto nella zona centrale dove stanno le figure della madre e del figlio morto.
Questo intenso lavoro “sotto la pittura” attesta un modo di dipingere straordinariamente nuovo, come ricorda la soprintendente Giovanna Nepi Scirè, che
ha fortemente voluto proprio alle Gallerie i ventotto capolavori dipinti da Tiziano nel suo ultimo periodo, dal 1550 fino al 1576, data della sua morte. E, in
effetti, intorno alla metà del ‘500 Tiziano Vecellio grandissimo artista, successore del Bellini e del Giorgione, “profeta” della pittura, scopre un nuovo modo
di dipingere contraddistinto dalla stesura veloce e libera del colore che sovrappone in dense pennellate sulla tela e mediante le quali le forme si scompongono accentuando da un lato una grande sensualità, dall’altro, contemporaneamente e paradossalmente, una intensa spiritualità. Si tratta dell’invenzione della cosiddetta “pittura a macchia”, così come l’ha definita il grande critico Vasari, che apre da quel momento in poi nuove e imprecisate possibilità alla pittura, tanto che molti critici concordano che il modo di dipingere del vecchio Tiziano assomiglia e anticipa, per certi versi, quello di Dvoràk o
di alcuni fra i migliori francesi di fine Ottocento, tra cui Rubens, Rembrandt, Delacroix, fino agli espressionisti. Il percorso espositivo è articolato in tre sezioni, dedicate ai ritratti, ai temi profani e alla pittura sacra, in cui si susseguono i magnifici dipinti, prestiti eccezionali dei maggiori musei del mondo.

LA NASCITA DI UN NUOVO MONDO
he history of Rome and of the various peoples and tribes who
were settled outside its borders – above all in Northern and
Eastern Europe – begins with Julius Caesar’s conquest of
Gaul, when the Germans were mentioned for the first time. He
described them as “violent and uncivilized people”. A single term of
Greek origin was soon to be used to identify, in a derogatory way,
the following peoples: Germans, Celts, Sarmatians, Alans, Goths,
Ostrogoths, Huns, Avars, Visigoths, Vandals. Basically all those
peoples who had different habits, customs, languages and cultures
from their own, who were often nomads and not organised in urban
aggregations and territorially stable empires and who menacingly
advanced from the outside boundaries of the Empire: they were the
“Barbarians”. It was the year 376 AC when, under the pressure of
the Huns, some Goths crosse the Roman borders along the Danube
and entered the Empire. Two years later, in Adrianople, the same
population inflicted one of the worst and most decisive defeats on
the Romans, who had lost their emperor Valente during the battle.
In 382, the Goths obtained a treaty (foedus) which gave
them the right to settle themselves in the Empire.
From that moment on, it stopped being a territory uniquely subject to the Roman law
and to the Emperor and it soon began
to undergo continuous and tremendous invasions that lead to its
disappearance, which occurred in
476 AC when the Barbarian king
Odoacre deposed Romulus
Augustulus, the last Roman
emperor of the Western world.
The exhibition retraces – as stated by his curator Jean-Jacques
Aillagon – that long history that
has been so decisive for the identity of the European continent
which all too often celebrates its
Greek, Roman and Jewish-Christian
roots but forgets its barbarian origins, that
are so powerful and influential.

a storia dei rapporti tra Roma e l’insieme di popoli e tribù che
si trovavano al di fuori dalle sue frontiere – soprattutto a nord
e a est dell’Europa - comincia fin dalla conquista della Gallia
da parte di Giulio Cesare, quando, per la prima volta si parla dei
Germani, da lui descritti come “uomini violenti ed incolti”. Ben presto un unico termine di origine greca, identificherà spregiativamente queste genti: Germani, Celti, Sarmati, Alani, Goti, Ostrogoti,
Unni, Avari, Visigoti, Vandali…tutti quelli che possedevano abitudini, costumi, lingue e culture distanti dalle proprie, che molto spesso
erano nomadi e non organizzati in aggregati urbani e imperi territorialmente stabili e che dal limes (confine) dell’Impero avanzavano
minacciosi erano “barbari”.
Correva l’anno 376 d.C., incalzati dagli Unni alcuni Goti varcavano
la nevralgica frontiera romana sul Danubio ed entravano
nell’Impero. Due anni dopo gli stessi, ad Adrianopoli, infliggevano
una delle più tremende e decisive sconfitte ai Romani, che perdevano in battaglia anche il loro imperatore Valente. Nel 382 i Goti ottenevano un trattato (foedus) che ne sanciva il diritto di
insediarsi nell’Impero, che da questo momento
non fu più un territorio sottomesso esclusivamente alla legge romana e all’imperatore e
che si aprì, di lì a poco, a subire le sempre più incalzanti e tremende invasioni tanto da scomparire per sempre proprio ad opera di un re barbaro, Odoacre, che, nel 476 dC.,
deponeva Romolo Augustolo,
ultimo imperatore romano d’occidente.
La mostra rievoca – a detta del
suo curatore Jean-Jacques
Aillagon - questa lunga storia, così
decisiva per l’identità del continente europeo, che troppo spesso celebra radici greche, romane ed ebraicocristiane, dimenticando invece le proprie
origini barbare, peraltro così potenti e determinanti.

n outstanding exhibition that brings to the fore the work of an
artist who uses traditional technical means – like oil-colours,
wax, canvas, wood – in unusual settings. In so doing Lawrence
Carroll (Melbourne, 1954), who has been working for a while in
Venice, creates a new form of expression that is more intimate and poetic and that is linked to a more enigmatic and complex human reality.
A sensibility deriving also from the personal background of the artist,
who emigrated to California and was soon obliged to earn his living. In
the 70s, at the Art Center College of Design of Los Angeles, he assembles looms on his own by using waste material and by fixing on top of
them recycled canvases, or he paints on canvases that had already been
painted on but that are no longer used. He thus repeats the experience
of other avant-garde artists and takes inspiration from Marc Rothko,
Robert Rauschenberg, from the minimalists but above all from Giorgio
Morandi with whom he feels great affinity. The exhibition, on show at
the Museo Correr, is an “exhibition/masterpiece” that, through nine
halls and over forty works, features themes precious to its research: the
relationship between container and content in the pavement works; the
Sleeping painting, in which thick canvases painted on both sides are folded as linens to be stored away; or paintings in new canvases with preexisting stripes or printed motives covered with various layers of colournon colour, in their turn already cut and assembled in a different way.

The symbolic seat of Venetian power,
formerly the seat of the Doge and State
Magistratures, the Palace is the supreme
embodiment of Venetian civilisation. A
masterpiece of gothic architecture, it
reveals a grandiose stratification of building and ornamental elements. The
interiors, superbly decorated by legions
of artists, including Tiziano, Veronese,
Tintoretto, Vittoria and Tiepolo, offer a
range of different experiences: from the
vast halls of political power to the interior finishings of the Doge's chambers,
from the gloom of the prison cells to the
brightness of the loggias overlooking St.
Mark’s Square and the lagoon.

utilizza i mezzi tecnici tradizionali - colori a olio, cera, tela, legno
- al di fuori dagli schemi abituali. Così Lawrence Carroll
(Melbourne,1954), da tempo attivo a Venezia, crea una diversa espressione più intima e poetica e legata alla realtà umana più enigmatica e
complessa. Una sensibilità che nasce anche dalla difficile storia personale dell’artista, emigrato in California e costretto molto presto a guadagnarsi da vivere. Negli anni’70, all’Art Center College of Design di
Los Angeles, assembla da sé i telai con materiale di scarto, fissandovi
sopra le tele che riesce a trovare, oppure dipinge su tele già dipinte e
non più utilizzate. Ripete così l’esperienza di altri artisti d’avanguardia,
dalla vita “bohème”, ispirandosi a Marc Rothko, Robert Rauschenberg,
ai minimalisti, ma soprattutto a Giorgio Morandi (che usò tutta la vita
modelli poveri, ricoperti di polvere per stemperare forme e colori tropo
definiti) verso il quale sente grande affinità. La mostra al Museo Correr
è una “mostra/opera” che, attraverso nove sale e oltre quaranta lavori,
rappresenta i temi cari alla sua ricerca: il rapporto fra contenitore e contenuto nelle opere a pavimento; lo Sleeping painting (dipinto che
dorme), in cui spesse tele dipinte su ambo i lati sono piegate e sovrapposte come lenzuola da riporre; oppure i dipinti di tela nuova, con righe
o motivi a stampa già presenti, ricoperti da vari strati di colore-non colore, a loro volta tagliati e assemblati in modo diverso.

The Library, designed by Jacopo
Sansovino, was built and decorated
between 1537 and 1560, at the request
of the Procurators of St. Mark, in order
to receive Latin and Greek codes, gifts
by Cardinal Bessarione. Nowadays, the
Library houses a priceless book collection of Venice’s Serenissima Republic.
Permanent exhibition: “La Sapienza” by
Tiziano and the Library Room decorated
with twenty-one tondos on the arched
ceiling and philosophers’ portraits on the
walls by Tintoretto and Veronese.

Glass museum
This particulary charming museum,
located in a Gothic palace, keeps the
original usage given by Mariano
Fortuny who created there his own
atelier of photography, set-designing
and staging. Nowadays, because of
restoration works, in the museum are
organized only temporary exhibitions
of visual communication.

The Galleria Regina, after ten years of activity now sets its identity
making a precise choice: glass at the service of art. The historical
seat has been restored and enlarged. The aim of Franco Regina
and his staff is forwarded to the stimulating project to bring near
two different categories of artists: glass artists, who design and realise the pieces personally, and other artists who assign the creation
of their works to a glass masters team.
The fascinating strength of the photographer
Leonardo Bezzola lies in his ability to catch
certain situations in a such an expressive
way that renders the images taken as a sort
of psychological moment. It is as if he had a
magnifier placed between his eye and the
lens. The result is staggering. The subject of
the photo lies there, in front of the spectator
in an absolutely unique moment. Many, or
rather all Bezzola’s pictures remain in one’s
eyes and mind. Tnguely’s arrival in Venice,
Niki Saint Phalle’s sad smile or Saint Phalle
impressive overflow of shapes remain
imprinted in our imagination as much as the
pictures of the works by great artists or the
images of exotic places or of race cars, his
great passion.

di fermare l’attimo delle situazioni in un modo talmente espressivo da
rendere l’immagine afferrata quasi un attimo psicologico. E’ come se

guarda in un momento assolutamente unico ed irripetibile. Molte, tutte
sono le foto di Bezzola che rimangono negli occhi, nella mente. L’arrivo

Born in 1990 from the collaboration between Massimiliano
Bugno and Davide Samueli, the Bugno Art Gallery (formerly known as Bugno And Samueli) can be found in the
main gallery space situated in Campo S. Fantin (a few
hundred meters from Piazza San Marco and exactly in front
of la Fenice theater). Since 1990, works by major contemporary artists both Italian and international have been
shown, from Arman to Schifano, Ben Vautier to Ugo
Nespolo, Pizzinato to Guidi, giving space at the same time
also to new artistic reality.

The church (1506-34), with its majestic dimension, rises in the homonymous campo (square)
which was historically the point of reference for merchants and for various types of trade activities thanks to its baricentrical location right between the political centre (the area of St.
Mark’s square) and the trade and financial one (Rialto). Its origin seems to be dating back
to the VII century, when, Jesus Christ appeared in a dream to Bishop Magno and suggested
him to build the city’s first churches, the most outstanding and central of which was to be
dedicated to “the Saver of the world”. The church had undergone numerous works of restoration the last of which dates back to the 16 century, whereas the monumental façade was
built in 1633. The interior, in its grandiosity, is harmonious and features typical Venetian shapes, with its crossed dome pattern (the three larger ones are situated longitudinally, whereas
the eight smaller ones are in pairs in the aisles) resembles the St. Mark’s Basilica. Inside the
church are kept the ashes of San Teodoro, first patron saint of the city. The most famous body
to be buried there is the one of Caterina Cornaro, the unfortunate queen of Cyprus who was
obliged to abdicate in favour of the Republic. Above the main altar, Titian’s Transfiguration
covers a precious 1300 silver altarpiece, uncovered during the main feast days.
La maestosa mole della chiesa (1506-34) si erge sul campo omonimo, storicamente punto di riferimento per mercanti e attività commerciali di varia natura, situato com’è in posizione baricentrica tra il polo politico amministrativo della città (l’area
marciana) e quello commerciale e finanziario (Rialto). Le sue prime radici sembrano risalire al VII secolo, all’epoca del
miracoloso intervento che in sogno suggerì al vescovo Magno di edificare le prime chiese della città, tra le quali la più
importante e centrale doveva essere dedicata al “Salvatore del mondo”. Molte sono state le ricostruzioni fino all’ultima del
Cinquecento, mentre la facciata monumentale ed enfatica fu eseguita nel 1633. L’interno, nella sua grandiosità, è armonioso e segue le forme tradizionali veneziane, con il suo schema di cupole a croce (le tre maggiori situate longitudinalmente, le otto minori a coppie nelle navate laterali) che ricorda la Basilica di San Marco. All’interno sono conservate le
ceneri di San Teodoro, primo patrono della città, mentre il defunto più famoso lì seppellito è Caterina Cornaro, l’infelice regina di Cipro costretta ad abdicare in favore della Repubblica. Sopra l’altare maggiore la Trasfigurazione di Tiziano copre una
preziosa pala d’argento del 1300, visibile nelle feste principali.
The most famous Basilica in Venice. The
exterior façades are decorated in
Byzantine style, with columns, basreliefs and coloured marble. On the terrace stand four imposing gilded bronze
horses. The building has five large
domes. The church is decorated inside
with gilded mosaics and treasures representing stories from the Bible.

Founded in the 12th century, this church
was rebuilt during the 17th century and,
at the beginning of the 18th century, it
was modified also its aspect, facing now
the Grand Canal: the new façade made
by the architect Domenico Rossi. The
church contains a veritable compendium of Venetian 18th -century paintings including an early work by Tiepolo.

It is an example of Gothic architecture
in Venice built between the 14th and
15th century and laid out in the form
of a Latin cross: it is composed of three
naves divided by twelve huge pillars.

This church was probably built in the 9th
The church has Byzantine origins, but
very few remains of the ancient building, modified during the XV century
and then restored at the beginning of
the XIX by the architect Davide Rossi.
He perfectly harmonized his NeoClassical choises with the original late
Gothic structure.

San Sebastiano
Built in the middle of 1300, this church changed its original name (San
Cristoforo) in Madonna dell’Orto
when an imagine of the Virgin, found
in a garden nearby, was brought in the
church itself. It is a typical Venetian
Gothic religious buildings. It was
Tintoretto’s parish church and he is
buried with his family in the chapel to
the right of the high altar.

In the middle of the 17th century,
Venice was struck by a terrible plague; in order to free the city, the
Republic of Venice’s Senate decided
that a church should have been built,
dedicated to the Virgin, asking her for
Health (salute). Between eleven plans
presented, it was chosen the one by
Baldassarre Longhena and works started in 1631. He designed a temple
having a central area on an octagonal
plan, dominated by a huge dome
with great arches.

Madonna Bizantina” work from the
13th-century Greek-Byzantine school.
Events: every year on November 21 the
inhabitants process to the Salute for a
service of thanksgiving for deliverence

According to the legend, this is one of
the eight churches founded by St.
Magno, Bishop of Oderzo, in the VII
century, and dedicated to the Virgin
who appeared in a dream to the
Bishop. However, the church, as we
can see it nowadays, was built in 1492
by Mauro Codussi, the leading architect of the early Venetian Renaissance.
The building has a Greek cross pattern, with three naves and the roof in
the shape of a cross vault.

One of the greatest examples of Palladio’s
architecture, and by some considered his
masterpiece, this church was built as a
result of a motion carried by the Senate
after the plague that struck Venice in
1576.
It is a votive temple dedicated to the
Redeemer.

It was built between the 14th and the
15th centuries and it is the largest
church in Venice. After S. Marco, this
was considered an “official” temple: it
was used for the solemn obsequies of
the dead Doges. The magnificent interior is in the form of a Latin cross, it has

polygonal apse.

It is one of the most beautiful VenetianByzantine buildings of the 12th century.
The exterior of the hexagonal apse is
very interesting, both for its architectural
beauty and the wealth of its decorative
elements. Five columns of Greek marble
divide the interior into three naves.

patterns and symbolic pictures of animals.

The old church, which belonged to the
nuns of the convent bearing the same
name, is located near the main church,
which was built by Codussi between
1480 and 1500. The new façade is a
typical example of Venetian Renaissance. Two rows of columns with beautiful capitals divided the interior into
three aisles. The great altar is surmounted by a cross vault and a hemispherical dome. The stunning interior is literally covered with paintings.

SANTA MARIA DEL ROSARIO
CHIESA DEI GESUATI
Built by the Carmelites and dedicated
to Saint Mary of Nazareth, it was designed by B. Longhena. The façade,
made of Carrara marble, is an example of the Venetian Baroque style.
Once there was also a marvellous
vault frescoed by G.B. Tiepolo; unfortunately, in 1915 it was destroyed by
Austrian bombs.
To see: sculptures, gilt and polychromatic decorations and the fine marbles.
This is an 11th century VenetianByzantine building in the form of a
Romanic Basilica. It is the oldest
monument of this type preserved in
the lagoon. The simple and solemn
interior is made up of precious marbles and gilt mosaics.
To see: the mosaics of the small apse on
ble portal attributed to Bartolomeo Bon.
The interior is divided into three wide
longitudinal Greek marble naves, the
presbytery has interesting inlaid wooden
choir stalls and the ceiling is shaped like
an inverted ship’s hull.
To see: “La lavanda dei piedi” and
“Cristo nell’orto” by J. Tintoretto; “Il
Battesimo di Cristo” by Paris Bordone.
The church of the Jesuits was built
between 1726 and 1735, it was commissioned by Dominicans, after they
took the place of the Jesuits, in order to
replace the small church that still stands
beside it. Giorgio Massari was the author
of the church’s design and of the internal
decoration, assisted by two great artists
of the period: Giambattista Tiepolo and
Gianmaria Morlaiter. The interior, with
its single nave, side chapels and a deep
presbytery, is beautifully balanced.
To see: the altarpiece and the ceiling by
G.B. Tiepolo, the altarpiece by
Piazzetta and “La Crocifissione” by
Tintoretto.
The church of S. Giovanni Elemosinario
was founded before 1071, but nothing
remains of the primitive building, due to
the devastating fire that swept through
the Rialto area in 1514. The current
building has simple and somewhat classical interiors, richly decorated with
many works: token of the special devotion of the school of arts and trades that
used the church premises.
To see: The altarpieces by Titian and by
Pordenone and the frescoes in the
cupola came to light again during the
restoration work.

It’s one of the six Scuole Grandi and,
according to Venice history, art and culture, it’s considered one of the greatest. The
building is a splendid Renaissance architecture example. The elegant double
stairway inside, lit with large arched windows, was built by Codussi. The beautiful
exterior Renaissance iconostasis, with its
carved decoration, was designed by P.
Lombardo.
To see: the ceiling with visions of the
Apocalypse, works of great masters such
as G.B. Tiepolo, Diziani, Marieschi.

This 16th century Renaissance building,
designed by Bartolomeo Bon, lodges
the school dedicated to San Rocco, the
protector of plague-strickens. San
Rocco archconfraternity’s seat is still

treasures of the 15th century, the
historic Nacchini organ.

he origins of the Venice
Carnival are lost in the
mists of time. The
Carnival was an enchanted
moment involving the whole
City, a symbol of liberty and
“transgression” against all the
rules imposed by the “Repubblica
Serenissima”, reflecting humanity’s timeless need to get caught
up in the games and intoxication
of celebration. It was a great illusion involving both the aristocracy and the poor alike, allowing
people to disguise their identity,
their sex and social class. In this
celebratory atmosphere the mask
represented the only way in
which everyone could be considered equal. For Venetians masked
in dominoes or dressed in one of
the multitude of different disguises available to them, it was a
time when life could be lived to
the full. Nobles opened the
courtyards of their palaces to the
festivities. In the streets, on the
canals and on the not-to-be-missed trip to “Liston” (where the
most sumptuous masks in the
City were to be found) the standard greeting was “Good Day to
you, Madam Mask”, individual
identity, sex and social class had
ceased to exist, all were able to
participate in the great illusion
that was the Carnival. Carnival
was once a magic moment that
enveloped the whole city, standing for liberty and trangression
against the regulations imposed
by the Most Serene Republic until
the end of the eighteenth century.

its history through costume. Costume creation is
an art that takes us back to the ancient school
of mask makers, taken up again and to be seen
a new in the craft shops in the historic centre.

Repubblica Serenissima, il
bisogno tipico dell'uomo di
abbandonarsi al gioco e
all'ebbrezza della festa. Una
grande illusione che coinvolgeva ceti nobili e poveri, che
attraverso la sue forme celava l’identità personale, il
sesso, la classe sociale.
In questo clima di festa la
maschera rappresentava l'unica possibilità di essere considerati tutti uguali.
Mascherati in bauta o in uno
dei tanti fantasiosi travestimenti i veneziani vivevano
intensamente questo periodo. Le corti dei palazzi si
aprivano alle feste. In tutti i
campi, spettacoli e musica
rallegravano i giorni e le
notti. Lungo le calli, per i
canali o nel passeggio d'obbligo al "liston", dove venivano sfoggiate le maschere
più sontuose della città, il
saluto era "buongiorno siora
maschera": l'identità personale, il sesso, la classe sociale
non esistevano più , si entrava a far parte della grande
illusione del Carnevale.

usata per sei mesi l’anno.

Una festa di Carnevale al buio, dove
tutti gli altri sensi, in particolare il tatto,
saranno protagonisti.

for six months of the year. It was
used by gentlemen in the cafés
and gambling places and by the
ladies at the innumerable parties
in the palaces of the Venetian aristocracy. Costume was also worn
by the ordinary people, so that
they could merge into the crowd.
An air of mystery descended over
the city in those times. The
famous tabari, black Venetian
cloaks and the white baute, white
robes, made their wearers look
enigmatic. The mask, in fact,
made everyone the same: tumblers, prostitutes, noblemen and
charlatans. But it was also a tool,
like the mask with the long nose
used by the industrious physician,
the plague doctor who covered his
face not to be detected by the people, who would have avoided
him. It must have been a torture
to wear the muta, a ladies’ mask,
usually black, held over the face
by means of a mouthpiece that
had to be clenched between the
teeth. Masks underwent a process
of change during the course of
history: first they were dress accessories, then they were used on all
occasions, and then they took on
the form of Commedia dell’Arte
characters for Carnival occasions.
One way or the other, the mystery
remains intact in time.

palazzo dell’aristocrazia veneziana. Serviva anche al
popolo, per poter confondersi fra la folla. Calava
un’atmosfera di mistero in
quel tempo. Mantelli neri, i
famosi “tabari”, e bianche
baute che davano alla figura
un aurea di mistero. La
maschera, insomma, rendeva
tutti uguali. Saltimbanchi,
prostitute, nobiluomini e
ciarlatani. Ma era anche strumento di lavoro. Come quella a “naso lungo” usata dal
“medico industrioso”: il
medico della peste che si
copriva il volto per non farsi
riconoscere dal popolo che
lo avrebbe evitato. Una tortura deve essere stato indossare la “muta”, una maschera, solitamente nera, portata
dalle signore e che si reggeva
in volto attraverso un “boccaglio” da serrare fra i denti.
Nel corso della storia la
maschera subisce una evoluzione. Prima è accessoria al
vestito, poi, nelle occasioni
carnevalesche, prende le
forme della commedia dell’arte. In un modo o nell’altro il mistero resta intatto nel
tempo.

MA GLI AMERICANI VIVONO IN CAPANNE?
Esiste un divertente aneddoto di natura giudiziaria che in
laguna capitò a William Dean Howells, console americano a
Venezia per conto del presidente statunitense Abraham
Lincoln, dal 1861 al 1865. Howells aveva subìto un furto in
casa, e stava presentando denuncia ad un commissario, a
Palazzo Ducale; in quel periodo (la città sarà annessa al
regno d’Italia solo nel 1866) la polizia era più attenta a perseguire i crimini politici che ruberie e reati minori, che per
questo motivo si contavano in gran numero. Dopo i convenevoli e la stesura dei dati, il diplomatico iniziò a raccontare
di aver visto, verso l’albeggiare, la testa del ladro spuntare
dalla finestra di casa, ed un braccio protendersi verso la sua
roba. “Scusi, signor console – interruppe il commissario –
come ha potuto vederlo?” “Perché non c’era niente al
mondo che potesse impedirmelo. La finestra era aperta”.
“La finestra era APERTA! – si stupì il commissario – vuole
dire che lei dorme con le finestre aperte?” “Credo di fare
quello che fanno tutti, d’estate. E’ il costume generale”.
Howells ebbe l’impressione che solo la sua posizione ufficiale gli impedisse di pigliarsi dello stupido. Il commissario
rimase fermo per un attimo, poi si alzò sulla grande sedia e
lo fissò per qualche istante. “Perdoni”, disse, e voltatosi
verso il segretario, gli dettò: “Scrivi che, CONFACENTEMENTE con le abitudini americane, i signori stavano dormendo con le finestre aperte”. Il diplomatico ne concluse
che il commissario considerasse queste abitudini un retaggio
del tempo in cui gli americani abitavano tutti in capanne.

VENETIAN Tales
There is a funny anecdote of a judicial nature that once happened in Venice to William Dean Howells, American consul in
Venice on behalf of the president of the United States Abraham
Lincoln, from 1861 to 1865. Howells had suffered a theft in his
house and was reporting it to a police officer at Palazzo Ducale.
At that time – the city will be annexed to the reign if Italy only
in 1866 – the police was more interested in prosecuting political
crimes rather than thefts or minor crimes which, for this reason,
were very frequent. After having exchanged amenities and written down the data, the diplomat began recounting that almost
at the break of dawn he saw the head of the theft sticking out of
the house window and an arm stretching out towards his belongings. “Excuse me Mr. Consul – interrupted him the police officer – how come you saw him?” “Because nothing on the earth
would have prevented me from seeing him. The window was
open”. “The window was OPEN! – said the police officer surprised – and you’re telling me you sleep with the windows
open?” “I think I do what everybody else does during summer.
It is a habit”. Howells had the impression that the only reason

THE RECIPE
GALANI
Ingredients
300g of superfine flour
60g refined sugar
2 eggs
60g of butter
1 small glass of grappa
a few tablespoons of milk, salt
oil (or suet for frying)
Place the sieved flower on the table, add a pinch of salt.
At the centre of the flour add the eggs, butter, sugar, milk
and grappa. Work the whole until you obtain a soft and
smooth dough. Roll it out and cut it with a cutting-wheel
into strips or rhombuses . Heat plenty of oil , or suet, in a wide
pan and dip in the pastries, fry them until they become slightly
brown. Once you have taken them out from the oil and let them dry
sprinkle with plenty ice-sugar.

Ingredienti
300g di fior di farina
60g zucchero semolato
2 uova
60 g di burro
1 bichierino di grappa
qualche cucchiaio di latte
sale, olio (o strutto per friggere)
Alla fontana di farina setacciata, aggiungere il pizzico di sale
e nel cratere le uova, il burro, lo zucchero semolato, il latte e
la grappa. Lavorare l’impasto fino ad ottenere un composto
molto morbido e liscio. Tirare a sfoglia sottilissima la pasta e
tagliarla con una rondella a strisce o a losanghe. Scaldare l’abbondante olio, o lo strutto, in una padella larga e immergervi le sfoglie
fino a quando hanno acquistatato un leggero colore. Una volta tolte dall’olio e asciugate, cospargerle con abbondante zucchero a velo.

i dice che il momento ideale per gustare la vera pasticceria
veneziana sia il Carnevale e uno dei più diffusi dolci sembra quasi esser stato inventato per rafforzare il noto proverbio: “a Carnevale ogni scherzo vale”, poiché i Galani non
sono altro che semplicissime, sottili fettucce di pasta fritta
cosparse di zucchero a velo. Vera e propria burla gastronomica, se ne possono consumare decine senza mai saziarsi, tant’è
vero che in molte regioni italiane ricevono nomi che rammentano l’inganno, come frottole, bugie, chiacchiere o cenci.
Tradizione vuole che vengano preparate per i bambini nelle
cucine delle famiglie veneziane. Hanno a volte il profumo di
limone, vaniglia, grappa o liquore e vengono fritte nello strutto bollente (ora sostituito con un più leggero olio di semi, prendendo forme più o meno accartocciate, quindi cosparse di leggerissimo zucchero a velo. Il nome Galani (pronunciato con la
tipica “elle” muta dei veneziani, in realtà una “e” brevissima di
legatura dal suono molto gutturale e molto chiuso, che solo i
veneziani pronunciano correttamente) deriva probabilmente
dalla parola gala che in dialetto significa “nastro”: a
Venezia i Galani si usano preparare molto sottili, quasi
un foglio di carta, in modo tale da mantenerne la fragranza.

t is said that the ideal time to savour true Venetian patisserie is Carnival, and one of the most eaten sweets seems
to have been invented to reinforce the famous proverb “a
Carnevale ogni scherzo vale” – at Carnival all tricks are
allowed –, since the “Galani” are nothing but very simple
thin slices of fried pastry sprinkled with ice-sugar. A fullblown gastronomic mockery. One can eat dozens of them
without ever feeling full up, indeed in various regions of
Italy they have been given names that recall the “trick”, like
‘frottole’ – fibs; “bugie” – lies; “chiacchiere” – chatters or
“cenci” – tatters. Tradition has it that they are prepared for
children in the kitchens of Venetian families. They smell
either of lemon, vanilla, “grappa” or of liquor, they are fried
in boiling suet (today sunflower oil is used instead) taking
different, more or less curled shapes and then sprinkled with
ice-sugar. The name “Galani” – pronounced with the typical
mute “l” which in reality is a guttural, closed and short “e”
that only Venetian can pronounce correctly – probably
comes from the word “gala” which in the Venetian dialect
means “ribbon”. Indeed, in Venice they are usually very
thinly cut, almost as thin as a sheet of
paper to maintain the fragrance.

Painting, ceramics, glass, design, illumination, architectural works, as well as search for solar and alternative energy
sources are the fields of interest of this versatile artist, who has, on several occasions, taken part in the Biennale of
Venice and in the Triennale of Milan. Vianello has been considered, since 1950, an ingenious experimenter and inventor of shapes in the world of glass and design, this interest has been accompanying him all his life and has presented
him to the world of art as one of the most cloistered yet gifted creators of Italian art. The exhibition presents a select
and emblematic choice of glasses closely connected with some design objects, lamps, ceramics, which the artist
created from the Forties to the Eighties. The works are supplemented by documentation coming from the archive
Toni Follina of Treviso, which includes drawings and preparatory sketches, period documents and photographs.

Il pensiero e l’opera di Pietro Consagra, scomparso nel 2005, per la complessità dei temi affrontati alla ricerca di un nuovo rapporto tra l’uomo,
lo spazio e la scultura, e per l’originalità delle soluzioni prospettate, contro il concetto di tridimensionalità da lui definita “matrice monumentale
di un linguaggio estinto”, rivestono un ruolo speciale nell’ambito della
riflessione estetica della seconda metà del ‘900. La mostra, dedicata a
uno dei protagonisti dell’informale italiano, è un sunto in cinquanta
opere di pittura e scultura della sua attività, dal 1964 quando il principio
dell’immagine frontale si amplia nella teorizzazione della “bifrontalità” e
nel felice uso del colore. Dalla “necessità della scultura” alla “necessità
del colore”, un tragitto che l’artista percorre sino agli ultimi anni, a partire dai Piani sospesi, concepiti tra il 1964 e il 1965, cui seguono poco dopo
i Ferri trasparenti, fantastiche presenze dal profilo curvilineo e dagli spessori ancor più assottigliati, ben rappresentati nella rassegna.

A monographic exhibition entirely dedicated to the artistic and professional path of Quirino De
Giorgio, in the centenary of his birth. The exhibition starts by displaying the first Futurist sketches, carries on with the regime architecture works (the Case del Fascio and rural villages) and finally comes
to the post-war production linked to the planning of cinematographs and to the production of the
80s. The items on exhibition consist of original documents (in particular on the bonds with Futurism
and futurists), reproductions of drawings, photos, sketches. Thanks to this homage to the architect,
the city takes possession of a past linked to the Venetian and Italian futurism which did not pay due
attention and value to De Giorgio.

affresco che attraversa tutto il Novecento. Il materiale esposto è costituito da documenti originali (in

The thought and work of Pietro Consagra, who passed away in 2005,
play a key role in the aesthetic contemplation of the second half of the
twentieth century for the complexity of the issues faced in the search
for a new relationship between, man, space and sculpture and for the
originality of the solutions put forward against the concept of “monumental matrix of an extinct language”. The exhibition, dedicated to
one of the protagonists of the Italian “informal art”, is a résumé consisting of fifty of his painting and sculpture works, from 1964 when the
principle of the frontal image evolves in the theorization of “bifrontality”
and in the enthusiastic use of colour. From the “need of sculpture” to
the “need of colour”, a path that the artist keeps following till his last
years of life, starting from the “Piani sospesi” (literally, suspended planes) conceived between 1964 and 1965, followed soon after by the
“Ferri trasparenti” (transparent irons), marvellous objects marked by a
curvilinear and thin shape, displayed in the exhibition.

such a competitive area and a training programme addressed to travel

Evento di punta, a dicembre 2008, la
settima edizione del Sea Trade Med,
che metterà in mostra quanto di meglio
l’industria delle crociere e dei traghetti
hanno da offrire. La rassegna, la più
importante del comparto per l’area
Mediterranea, affiancherà alla sezione
espositiva, un nutrito calendario di
conferenze sulle tematiche più importanti legate al predominio dell’industria crocieristica nel Mediterraneo
unitamente ad una panoramica sull’industria dei traghetti in questa area così
competitiva, e ad un programma di formazione dedicato agli agenti di viaggio.
Un evento che per tre giorni (9-11
