ARTICLE 5 – Selection examination
Selection is meant to assess the candidate’s qualifications, attitude to scientific research
and knowledge of one or more foreign languages.
The exams will consist of a written test and an interview, together with an assessment of
the applicant’s cv. Candidates shall have a good knowledge of at least one foreign
language.
The curriculum studiorum is derived from the mean of all marks obtained in every
university exam taken, combined with the final grade awarded, according to the
following grading scheme:
•
degree grade in hundred-tenths, up to a maximum of 10 points:
from 109 to 110 (first-class degree)……………………….10 points
from 107 to 108 ……………………………………………8 points
from 105 to 106 ……………………………………………6 points
from 103 to 104…………………………………………….4 points
from 101 to 102 …………………………………………….2 points
from 99 to 100………………………………………………1 point
•
arithmetic and weighed means of all marks of the university exams, up to a
maximum of 10 points:
average grade more than 18 and less than or equal to 20………………….1 point
average grade more than 20 and less than or equal to 23………………….2 points
average grade more than 23 and less than or equal to 25………………….4 points
average grade more than 25 and less than or equal to 27………………….6 points
average grade more than 27 and less than or equal to 29………………….8 points
average grade more than 29 and less than or equal to 30 (first-class degree) 10 points
The average mean must be calculated until the second decimal unit (i.e. if the
average mean is 27.493, 27.49 must be taken into account).
The calculation (see annex n. 15) of the arithmetical mean must be made only by
those applicants whose degree has been conferred in compliance with the previous
Italian regulations in force (minimun length: 4 years). The calculation of the weighed
mean must be made by those candidates in possession of a specialistic/master degree
as per the Ministerial Decree n. 509 of 1999 and its subsequent modifications and
developments.
Università degli Studi di Napoli
“Parthenope”
In order to calculate the weighed mean, candidates will have to:
- multiply the grade obtained in each exam given for the number of CFU
acquired in the same exam (for first + second level degrees);
- sum the obtained results;
- divide such sum by the total number of CFU corresponding to the exams
given;
- ignore all qualifying exams and honours.
As regards the degree in “Scienze Motorie” obtained after the “I.S.E.F.” University
Diploma, following the so-called “anno integrativo” (supplementary year), as per the
Ministerial Decree of 15/01/1999, art. n. 5, parr. 5 and 6, the arithmetical mean shall be
calculated on the whole of the exams;
In the case of the Specialistic/Teaching Degree (LS/LM), classes 53, 75 or 76, obtained
after the I.S.E.F. Diploma, the arithmetical mean will result from the sum of the exam
given for the I.S.E.F. Diploma and the weighed mean for the Specialistic/Teaching
Degree of the first two years.
The examinations will take place in the days and according to the conditions stated in the
form for every PhD course (see the annexes from 1 to 13 of the present announcement);
such communication has the value of notification for all legal purposes. No further
communication will be given.
ART. 6 – EXAMINATION COMMITTEE
The examination committees responsible for the admission of candidates to the
various PhD programmes are appointed by Decree of the Chancellor after consultation
with their respective PhD Boards. Each committee shall be made up of 3 members
chosen among university lecturers and tenure researchers to which a maximum of 2
experts, who may also be non-Italians, chosen from the area of public and private
research institutions and bodies, may be added. The designation of these experts is
compulsory should conventions and agreements with small and medium enterprises be in
place.
In order to assess each candidate, the examination committee can award a maximum
of 50 marks for each exam (written test and interview), in addition to a maximum of 20
marks that can be attributed to the candidate's academic curriculum.
Only candidates who pass the written test with a minimum of 30/50 marks are
admitted to the oral exam (interview).
Candidates who get 30 marks in the interview will also be included in the final list.
Università degli Studi di Napoli
“Parthenope”
Once the exams have all been completed, the committee shall draw up the general list
of successful candidates based on the total sum of the marks achieved in the examination
combined with the grades attributed to their degrees.
ART. 7 – FINAL RANKING LIST
The final ranking shortlist will follow a decreasing order and will be validated by a
Decree of the Chancellor. When results and qualifications are equal, preference shall be
given to the younger candidate. Short-listed applicants will be admitted to the PhD
Programme according to their order in the list until all available places for each PhD
programme have been filled.
Should successful candidates relinquish their right to admission to the course
prior to date mentioned in the following article (8) or within 30 days from the beginning
of the course, other candidates will take their places, according to the order in which they

beneficial for periods of study abroad or for the research activities of the PhD student.
The amount of the doctorate scholarship will be increased by 50% for study periods
abroad, depending on the University's financial resources. Study periods abroad cannot
exceed half the length of the whole PhD course.
Università degli Studi di Napoli
“Parthenope”
The application for the above financial increase must be addressed to the Coordinator
of the PhD course and the Chancellor, and must provide evidence of the benefits and

following payment.
Any candidate who has previously received a student grand for a doctorate, even for
one year, cannot request a second one.
At the beginning of each year of their PhD course, doctoral students who are granted

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CALCULATION OF THE ARITHMETICAL
AND WEIGHED MEANS
Applicants in possession of a degree taken according to prior didactic regulations (at least
a four-year course) shall calculate only the ARITHMETICAL mean (sum of single
marks for each exam divided by the total number of exams) of the exams given
during their degree course, at the risk of exclusion from the selection procedure.
Candidates who have taken a specialistic or training degree according to the Ministerial
Decree n. 509 of 1999 and subsequent amendments and integrations shall calculate the
WEIGHED mean of the exams given during their degree studies in order to acquire the
total number of 300 CFU (University Formative Credits).
To calcalute the weighed mean, candidates will have to:
a) multiply the grade obtained in each exam given for the number of CFU
acquired in the same exam (for first + second level degrees);
b) sum the obtained results;
c) divide such sum by the total number of CFU corresponding to the exams
given;
ignore all qualifying exams and honours.
For instance (let us suppose that a first level degree is made up of 4 exams "x" and that a
second level degree is made up of 4 exams "y"; the whole degree course, then, is made up
of 8 exams):

WEIGHED MEAN =23,28
The mean must be calculated until the second decimal unit (i.e. if the average mean
is 27.493, 27.49 must be taken into account).
N.B.:
- As regards the degree in “Scienze Motorie” obtained after the “I.S.E.F.” University
Diploma, following the so-called “anno integrativo” (supplementary year), as per the
Ministerial Decree of 15/01/1999, art. n. 5, parr. 5 and 6, the arithmetical mean shall be
calculated on the whole of the exams;
- In the case of the Specialistic/Teaching Degree (LS/LM), classes 53, 75 or 76, obtained
after the I.S.E.F. Diploma, the arithmetical mean shall result from the sum of all
grades of the exams taken for the I.S.E.F. Diploma and the weighed mean of all
grades of the exams taken for the Specialistic/Teaching Degree (the first two years).
