Preface
The highly anticipated Biennale of Chianciano
2011, set amongst the stunning Tuscan
landscape is one of the most important
contemporary art shows in Europe. The event
draws together a global network of artists,
galleries, and art enthusiasts, connecting them
in the town of Chianciano, famous for its
rejuvenating springs. The Etruscans recognised
the healing power of these springs as early as
the 5th century B.C. and, to this day, Chianciano
is a centre of health and culture. The springs
symbolise the role of the Biennale; a revival of
contemporary art in an enchanting region that
has inspired artists and writers from Dante to
Michelangelo for centuries.
The Museum organises a parade of the flag flyers of Città della Pieve, in honour of the Biennale artists.
The Biennale hosts the finest artistic talent
from around the world - from emerging
talents to those well established and present
in the permanent collections of some of the
most important museums in the world. The
diversity of the artists present can be seen
within the artwork on display, providing a
fascinating insight into a distinctive array of
cultures and traditions. The incredible skill
and ability of the artists has set them apart
from thousands of applicants in the eyes of the
selection committee, composed of art critics,
curators, and experts. The venue will be a
connecting point for these world-class artists to
gain international exposure and, this year, the
participants have been given the exceptional

opportunity of inviting 300 galleries to attend
the exhibition as guests of the Museum, adding
yet another dimension to the global nature
of this event. Furthermore, representatives
from Oxford University Alumni will be in
attendance, as the Museum is the Tuscan base
for the Oxford Alumni Society, and there will
be exponents of the European Confederation of
Art Critics. Both institutions will have separate
Jury panels and will be presenting distinct
awards to selected Biennale artists.

The Chianciano Art Museum is home to an
eclectic collection; comprised of works by
renowned and influential artists ranging from
Old Masters such as Dürer and Rembrandt
to the more contemporary Damien Hirst and
Salvador Dalí. The atmosphere of the museum
is one of modern elegance, blending a tasteful
display of classic and contemporary artwork
while implementing innovative methods to
communicate the visions and passions of the
artists. It is within these surroundings that the
artwork for the Biennale will be displayed.
The presentation of the artworks is always
of paramount importance and undergoes
careful consideration and reason; every aspect
is considered, from the angle of light, the
composition and planning of the halls, the
interwoven styles and subjects, in order to
maximise the visual impact of the artwork thus
creating a setting worthy and fitting for display
and appreciation.
This year, artists also have the opportunity to
reach beyond their visual communication with

exclusive artist interviews called “The Voice
of the Artist,” carried out in the Museum’s
television studio. This possibility provides
the viewer with deeper insight into the artists’
work and ensures that the individuality of
each talent is highlighted among the mosaic
of cultures, ideas, and artistic styles during the
event.
This is a unique exhibition that hosts
extraordinary works which will stimulate
viewers to observe their environment in
a new way and will provide an exciting
transformational experience, both intellectual
and emotional.
