Education programs and resources
The Museo Italiano Melbourne explores the themes of migration and settlement, diversity, identity, language,
culture and community life. An education kit including student activities at different levels (beginners, intermediate
and advanced) based on the permanent exhibition are available for teachers to download from the website:

The following Education Programs for Museo Italiano Melbourne will be offered:
La storia in valigia- Exploring Italian migrant stories
Staff led program for Years 5-10
A student centered program about the stories of Italian migrants and their contribution to Australia. The workshop
explores the themes within the exhibition at Museo Italiano through a series of objects, photographs and
information about Italian migrants.
The workshop will cater for all levels of comprehension and can be facilitated in Italian and/or bilingually. The
workshop will be followed by a visit to Museo Italiano exhibition. Students are encouraged to complete museum
activities in Italian, which will be available for teachers to download and bring on the day of the excursion from the

Museo Italiano- Introductory talk for Advanced level of Italian
Staff led program for Years 11- 12 (VCE)
An introductory talk of the permanent exhibition presented in Italian with a focus on the contribution and identity of
Italians in Victoria. This session will be followed by a visit to Museo Italiano exhibition. Students are encouraged
to complete museum activities in Italian, which will be available for teachers to download and bring on the day of

Museo Italiano-Self Guided school group visits
Teachers can organize self-guided visits to the Museo Italiano exhibition and can download the museum selfguided activities from the Education kit available from the website: www.museoitaliano.com.au There is no cost
for self-guided visits to the museum, however, bookings are essential.

The education kit for Museo Italiano includes teacher notes, Tuning in, Museum visit and Post visit language
activities at the beginners, intermediate and advanced levels that link to LOTE (Italian) and other domains:
Humanities- History; Personal Learning, Civics and Citizenship, Communication; Thinking Processes and ICT.
The Italian language activities in the Education Kit cover a range of themes such as, la vita quotidiana -il
divertimento- lo sport- il lavoro- i bambini. The kit also includes
pictures and information on museum objects and key historical images.
Bookings for Museo Italiano Melbourne Education Programs
School groups must be booked into the Museo Italiano for both staff-led programs or self-guided visits.

The Museo Italiano is open for self-guided school group visits from Tuesday- Friday at the following

Preserving the Italian Way
“The origin of many preserves is from a time long before refrigerators and supermarkets, when the mother
needed to stock up a larder with food for winter. Over the years, a number of delicious and particular ways have
been developed to maintain the nutritional value as well as enhance the flavour of a number of different foods,
as they become abundant. Each region and each family within each region, developed slight variations that made
their particular method superior or of particular pride for that family.
If one goes back to the village, one would have to use every resource possible to prepare for the winter months.
At their disposal were the current produce, salt, olive oil and the sun. Sott’olio (under oil) is a common and
versatile method to preserve almost anything including vegetables, fish and meat. There are basically two parts
to the process. The first part is cooking, which can be done with heat, or with salt and vinegar, which essentially
cooks the produce chemically. The second is sealing the preserved products from air and bacteria. Putting the
preserve under oil or in vinegar or brine does this. However, using brine, or when sterilizing fish, the product has
to be sterilized in vacuum jars. Re-cycled jam jars that have a metal lid with a rubber seal are ideal. The proper
sterilization is an essential process that needs to be followed meticulously. Poorly sterilized food will ferment
and explode or, worse still, can be poisonous and extremely dangerous.
It is always essential that you:
- use a good quality olive oil,
- use the best and freshest fish or vegetables etc. always use herbs from your own garden that you
know are fresh.
- make sure the products that you are preserving are at peak season. Don’t try to make tomato sauce
during the winter when tomatoes are artificially redden and tasteless.
- Make sure you follow the sterilization instructions carefully.”

Olives in the classroom
“There is something surprisingly modest about olives trees, given their noble history and legendary
reputation, going back far before biblical times. Quite often there is nothing particularly breathtaking or
impressive about an olive tree, about the tree’s height or girth; nothing striking or exotic about its leaves or
fragrance.
But for an Italian, as for most Mediterranean people, the olive tree has been seen throughout history as
almost holy---a symbol of peace, victory, and the endurance of life itself. In Greek mythology, Zeus
pronounced Athena the victor in a competition because it was she who had bestowed upon mankind the most
useful plant of all: the olive tree. These ancient trees, which originated in the region that is today called

Turkey, have had a huge impact on all the important civilizations of the Mediterranean for at least 4000 yearsproviding food, medicinal potions, and the most nourishing of all, olive oil.
The harvesting of olive is almost always done by hand,slow, labor-intensive work, usually done without
mechanical devices of any kind except perhaps a rake. Olives are easily bruised and must be handled gently,
especially “table olives”, meaning those intended to be eaten – as antipasti, or used in sauces- as opposed to
crushed into oil.

Depending on the cultivar, the shape and texture of olives vary greatly, from tiny spherical orbs to large,
plump ovals. Their colours vary as well, but this has to do with how long they have been allowed to ripen on
the trees. The fruit starts out as a yellowish green, then during the many months of ripening on the tree, they
slowly turn to green, then light brown, then a dark purplish and eventually black – though some varieties are
green when considered ripe.
The olive is undeniably one of the most celebrated fruits of all time, however, given how beloved the olive is, it’s
ironic how intolerably bitter the uncured fruit is...it is simply impossible to pluck an olive off the tree and eat it.
Only after long, elaborate curing processes and marinating do olives acquire their exquisite taste. The processes,
by which olives are made edible – and delicious – vary widely; they can be water cured, brine cured, lye cured, oil
cured, dry cured or sun dried, like tomatoes. Preserving them in brine (salted water) is the most common way
to eliminate the bitterness. This process may take from six weeks up to nine months or longer.
Today olives are available in the market in a variety of ways; natural and pitted, crushed, seasoned with a range
of herbs, spices, hot peppers and even lemon zest. Olives are a natural product and add a palpable, depth of
flavour and texture not only to antipasto platters but to cooking in general.”

In the months of autumn, Jill Tascone, from BIGpocket Educational Incursions has made it possible for students
in the classroom to roll up their sleeves and immerse themselves in this age old tradition. Believing that
experience is the best teacher, she takes them on a journey from Italy to Australia, passing on family stories of
life back home, harvesting olives and processing them to produce the family’s supply of extra virgin olive oil. She
is passionate about sharing the authentic recipes for preserving olives, only using natural ingredients. All of the
students take the raw green olives through various stages to produce a 300ml jar of Sicilian lemon infused olives,
which are ready to eat in 3 months. The lesson finishes with a taste of Sicilian Olives, Olive Tapenade and a taste

of fine quality extra virgin olive oil with balsamic vinegar all served with crusty Italian bread. It is no wonder that
students comment “I don’t normally like olives but these are so delicious! ‘’

Igiaba Scego
“A Roma la gente corre sempre, a Mogadiscio la gente non corre mai.
Io sono una via di mezzo tra Roma e Mogadiscio…cammino a passo

Igiaba Scego is the author of short stories and novels as well as being one of the most active intellectuals in
regard to the cultural and civil issues related to African migration. She lives in Rome where she was born in
1974 to Somali parents who had emigrated to Italy following Said Barre’s 1969 coup d’ètat (her father had
been Foreign Minister). Raised in Italy in a primarily racist environment, Scego learned about her family’s
country of origin through accounts and stories told in the home. The multiple identity that was cultivated by
the fables, memories and traditions of her mother tongue was also formed through Scego’s daily experiences
with her “other” mother tongue, Italian. Scego confronts this reality in her writing.
After a degree in modern foreign languages and literatures, Igiabe Scego completed her Ph.D. in 2008. Since
2005, she has edited a series of radio programs and authored columns in some of Italy’s most notable
newspapers and magazines (“Repubblica”, “ L’Unità”, “Internazionale”, Nigrizia”, etc. Her current position is
in part thanks to the plaudits and interest generated by her first two publications, both novels : La nomade
che amava Alfred Hitchcock [The Nomad Who Loved Alfred Hitchcock] (2003: a story inspired by Scego’s
mother who had been a nomad before settling in Mogadishu): and Rhoda (Sinnos, Roma, 2004). Notoriety
followed the publication of two short stories, Salsicce [Sausages] (2003, Eks&Tra Prize for Migrant Writers)
and Dismatria, published in Pecore Nere. Racconti insieme a Gabriela Kuruvilla e Ingy Mubiay, [Black Sheep]
Roma, edizioni Laterza an anthology of short stories. Both stories are what might be called “socially
conscious” in that they address themes of cultural and juridical discrimination on the part of the Italian state
toward Arab and African immigrants.
In Salsicce, for example, Scego opts for an ironic and paradoxical tone as she tells of the anger that a Muslim
Italo-Somali girl feels as she attempts to force herself into betraying her religion’s rules on not eating pork, all
in an effort to feel “less different”.
Scego’s opus refers to her own life experiences –“At home I Iived the Somali culture and the Islamic faith, I
spoke Somali, I ate Somali food […] but outside I came in contact with the Italian reality, with school,

television, friends. This division was part of my life and it is clear that this experience passed over into my
writing.”

Spectacular Spettacolo Shows For 2014!
“Time Warp Part 1 and 2” may be finished, but Spectacular Spettacolo will be back in 2014 with the
final part of the trilogy (for the final year), “Part 3 – Vacanze Romane”. These shows are relevant
for students Prep – 6 and are from our very popular “Time Warp” series (more information on our
shows including sample songs are available on our website at www.leaporcaro.com.au/spectacularspettacolo/).
The shows have been written by Lea and Corrado Porcaro. Corrado has been teaching Italian for
almost 30 years in the Primary sector, as well as having developed many programs for the
Department of Education over the years. Many teachers already use resources that he has created
in their classrooms. Corrado knows the curriculum like the back of his hand and he has written these
shows knowing what teachers (and students) not only need, but want. This is why we have had 100%
positive feedback so far!
Our shows are not only dynamic, fun, engaging, interactive and contain fresh, new, popular songs
relevant for the students of today, they also cover different areas of Italy as well as topics that
relate back to the current curriculum. For example, in “Part 3 – Vacanze Romane”, our heroine,
Claudia, returns to Italy and each place she visits, we have a song that relates back to what the
students are learning. Every booking will also include the fantastic teachers’ pack which contains over
a semester’s worth of material (including loads of lesson plans with fun ideas on how to introduce the
language used throughout the show either before or after the students have seen it), the lyrics to
all the songs sung throughout the show and a copy of the CD. The pack has also been put together
by Corrado. Feedback from teachers in regards to this pack has been extraordinary!

Dance workshops for primary and secondary schools
A fun and dynamic way to introduce children to the joy of folk dancing
The workshop runs for 45-60 minutes and includes:
An introduction to the cultural and historical background of the
tarantella and the traditions of the South of Italy
Demonstration and explanation of the traditional percussive instruments and their origins.
Extensive use of Italian vocabulary
A demonstration of the dance by the teacher
Teaching of the basic steps and structure of the dance
Children will learn a simple and fun tarantella dance routine
Suitable for all ages, big or small groups.
