Who and how many are the protagonists of Italian research in Europe? Scienceonthenet aims at defining the geography of Italian research by analysing the data of the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission. The 173 countries admitted to FP7 research programme hold more than 100,000 project partecipations altogether. Contractors at the first 20 places in the ranking boast more then 1,000 participations each and they are all EU Members except Israel, the only non-European country in the top 20, with 1,786 participations. In this picture, the first relevant data for Italy is its position compared to other bigs of European research. With 10,619 participations, which represent about 10% of the total, Italy gains the 4th place after Germany, United Kingdom and France and before Spain. These five countries cover altogher almost 50% of the total amount of projects. In this first release, we only considered universities and research centres , without looking in details at departments and institutes or the economic size of the projects. These will constitute the next steps of the Italian Research Map project, which will be implemented by the portal Scienceonthenet by the end of this year. Analysing the main themes for the number of participations, some of the characteristics for each country may be deduced; for instance, the predominance of the theme People in the UK rather than the lesser importance of the theme SME in France. For these themes, Paris, London and Madrid positioned before Rome and Milan for the number of holdings. In Italy, thanks to the contribute of Rome and Milan, Lazio and Lombardy resulted the regions with most participations in FP7 projects. It should be noted that, in Rome, number of participations derived great advantage from the CNR, whose individual institutions actually have locations all over Italy. CNR is the first organization in Italy and among the top 5 in Europe, preceded only by CNRS, Fraunhofer Institute of Munich and University of Cambridge. Data source: CORDIS, updated to December 2013.
