AMA Mantova Makers is a network of companies that operate in different fields created with the objective of spreading the particularities and expressive tools of each participating company throughout the whole world. M M The companies have the same vocation for their quality in culture and the Mantuan territory, known since the Renaissance for the unsurpassable leadership in the fields that the founding companies of MAMA belong to. A natural result is promoting the native city. The companies, which share a strong cultural tie as well as a territorial one and that have received recognition on an international level, by qualifying themselves they have qualified the Mantuan territory, with a productive system of reciprocal exchange. MAMA Mantova Makers, proceeding within circles of excellence and through the development of articulated initiatives, sets itself as ambassador of its own city, representing the traditions and values of the past, through the network’s participating companies. •AGAPE •BENEDINI ASSOCIATI •BUSTAFFA •GENTRYPORTOFINO •LOOKLATERAL •LUBIAM •MATTEO BRIONI •ORCHESTRA DA CAMERA DI MANTOVA M antova has enjoyed great cultural prestige for centuries, boasting a past as one of Europe’s most wonderful noble courts; Philippe Daverio’s eloquent definition mentions it as the “Manhattan of the sixteenth century”. You can’t talk about the Italian Renaissance without mentioning the role that this city had in Europe, thanks to the Gonzaga dynasty, great philanthropists that put their dominion’s representation in the hands of the top artistic and humanistic languages. It’s known that great masters came through the Mantuan court, from Pisanello to Leon Battista Alberti, to artists of the court such as Andrea Mantegna, the artist of the bridal chamber in the Castle of San Giorgio, Giulio Romano, who created the magnificent architecture and decorations of Palazzo Te, and Peter Paul Rubens, who further expanded the Dukes’ already sensational collection of paintings. In 1607 inside one of the Gonzaga palaces, the Palazzo Ducale, Claudio Monteverdi’s Orpheus was put on show. This is considered the first play that has ever been done, a fundamental step for the following development of the romantic melodrama. Monteverdi lived and worked in Mantova for more than twenty years, he got married, had two children and published the first 5 editions of the very important Madrigals. Along with the Jewish violinist Salomone Rossi, another great representative of the polyphonic madrigal style, Claudio Monteverdi is justly considered the most important and influential Mantuan musician of the Renaissance. Isabella d’Este, the wife of Francesco II Gonzaga, is a memorable figure who strongly contributed to defining a fruitful and cutting edge cultural environment. In fact she was defined as the “First lady of the Italian Renaissance”. Of undisputed charm, noticeable intellect and high education, the marchioness had a great passion for all forms of art, from music, to painting, to goldsmithry, which brought her to engage with artists such as Tiziano, Perugino, Leonardo and Correggio to beautify and decorate her rooms. Of extremely fine taste, the noble woman was an unequalled point of reference for the whole western world for fashion and beauty in general. To be noted is the multitude of scholars that are closely tied to Mantova, from the native Virgilio, the great latin poet author of the Aeneid, up to the humanist Baldassare Castiglione, author of the The Book of the Courtier and portrayed by Raphael in a famous painting. The Gonzaga family is also famous for its military tradition: if Francesco II should be remembered for his good skills as a mercenary captain other than for his extremely popular bride, Gianfrancesco Gonzaga before him was in command of the military units that were responsible for the victorious battle at Fornovo against the French. Even today you can admire the elegance of the commanders’ armature, true design objects that are results of knowledgable local artisans. The centuries old history of the Gonzaga was so popular that it became idolized in Giuseppe Verdi’s famous opera Rigoletto. Mantova has its roots deep in a culture that is as distant as it is broad, always capable of emerging in a variety of fields that have created a multitude of cultural expressions. Mantova is culture, design, fashion, art. Mantova is the Italian leader in the World. In 1997, Mantua Chamber Orchestra was awarded the “Franco Abbiati” prize by Italian musical critics for its peculiar stylistic refinement and constant search for sound quality, which can effectively merge Italian instrumental tradition and classical repertoire. Home to the orchestra is the Bibiena Theatre in Mantova – an authentic jewel of architecture and acoustics. Mantua Chamber Orchestra has been performing for over 30 years with world renown conductors and soloists, and has given several concerts both in Italy and abroad. It has performed in theatres and concert halls all over Europe, in the USA, South America and Asia. Mantua Chamber Orchestra has recorded for RAI (Radiotelevisione Italiana), Bayerischer Rundfunk and Swiss RSTI. In September 2009, the ensemble recorded three of Haydn’s Symphonies, on commission by “Amadeus”, the most important Italian musical magazine; the CD was greatly appreciated by both audience and critics. Most recently, the orchestra has recorded two equally appreciated CDs (Hyperion) centered on Mozart’s piano concertos. Since 1993, in order to make people appreciate classical music, Mantua Chamber Orchestra has been holding in Mantua a very successful yearly season, “Tempo d’Orchestra”, with the contribution of famous Italian and foreign soloists, chamber groups and orchestras. Moreover, since 2013 it has been producing the “Mantova Chamber Music Festival”, an international meeting held in the Ducal Palace in Mantua. W hen Agape was first established in 1973 we decided on a name that would be close in spirit to the way in which we intended to work. Far removed from the concept of mass production of the Industrial Revolution, Agape instead puts mankind and its ideas at the centre of the creative process carried out with love. Since the start we have always devoted ourselves to designs linked mainly to the concept of water; innovative designs that have often marked changes driven by new lifestyles. While our ‘road’ is already firmly delineated, this has never been more true than in Agape’s case. Our main offices next to a river and our brand logo a drop of water contained inside the letter “a” are signs of a destiny inextricably bound to water. And the spirit that accompanies us in our work is evident in the space where we receive our guests, and indeed anyone who wishes to get to know us better. The quality of our designs and our obsession for detail have enabled us to create timeless products that make Agape unique the world over for bathroom products, and not bathrooms alone. A few years ago we decided to take up the challenge of developing and promoting the designs of the legendary architect, designer and sculptor, Angelo Mangiarotti. His collection of tables and bookcases are returning to some of the world’s finest homes, thereby consolidating a relationship with major architects who already use Agape products. Conceived here in the historical province of Mantua, famous for its culture and tradition, are refined products we are proud to find all over the world. The “Administrative guide of the city and province of Mantua” from 1896 mentions the name Odoardo Bustaffa in the “Gardeners and Florists” category. Odoardo was Giovanni’s father and the grandfather of Massimiliano, the current owner, and in 1895 was commissioned with the project planning of the old garden of Porta Pradella. In those years the company’s headquarters were in via Cairoli and then in viale delle Rimembranze. In 1939 the company bought the area in via Legnaghese n.2, bordering with the House of Sparafucile, continuing its production and sale of flowering plants. During the ‘50s, Bustaffa took care of restoring the city’s public gardens and provided the construction of new greenhouses, increasing the production of greenhouse plants. Since 1998 the activity of growing plants, garden and green area maintenance has been under Massimiliano’s guidance, who keeps his family’s values with passion, and through the use of contemporary and cutting edge technologies, offers quality products, carrying on a history that started more than 100 years ago. Work and passion met when Matteo has rediscovered the clay, a material not only sustainable and healthy, but also with a natural beauty. MattoBrioni SRL was founded in 2010 to devote itself exclusively to the earth products. EARTH is one of the oldest construction materials: mixture of clays and natural aggregates, it is just left to air dry, without the need for cooking. Traditional material, is led by MatteoBrioni towards a contemporary use. Coming from a careful selection of clays, is free of pigment and expresses all the quality of the place of origin and high chromatic, tactile and hygroscopic qualities. A healthy and hypoallergenic material, able to regulate temperature and humidity, to create continuous surfaces and to sinuously adapt to any shape, with a versatility that allows bold experimentation. For Matteo Brioni, the respect of the material is the respect of the earth. His work blends three values: ethics, as consciousness of what is produced; aesthetics, as natural beauty of the material; ecology, as respect for the environment, from production to application process and product life. The company’s daily challenge is to bring the matter beyond its limits, through continuous research on its use in architecture: to create new perspectives in the lived space, giving three-dimensionality to the surfaces and transfering the natural sensorial charge typical of the earth in the spaces designed by man.
