Competition Rules
Art. 1 – DATE AND VENUE OF THE COMPETITION
The competition will take place in Faenza, in Piazza Nenni (formerly Molinella square) on the days
6th and 7th September, 2014.
Art. 2 – ENTRANTS
Potters of any nationality are eligible to take part in the competition and must submit their
application in accordance with Art. 8.
Automatic admission is accorded to the potters who passed the selections in the European cities
that are part, together with Faenza, of the European Project Arginet, supported by the European
Commission: Argentona (Spain), Aubagne (France), Boleslawiec (Poland), Gmunden (Austria),
with a maximux fixed at 3 (three) potters for each city.
Age limit: potters are eligible to participate if they are 16 years old or older on the first day of the
competition (they have to be born on or before the day 6th September 1998). For participants
under 18 years old, a consent letter signed by a parent or a legal tutor (see Attachment 2).
Art. 3 – PRIZES
World Master Technical Championship
This title will be awarded to the potter who obtains the highest total score in the final heats to:
• Create the tallest cylinder.
• Create the widest bowl.
In accordance with the conditions described in Art. 4.
World Female Master Technical Championship
This title will be awarded to the female potter who obtains the highest total score in the final heats
to:
• Create the tallest cylinder.
• Create the widest bowl.
In accordance with the conditions described in Art. 4.
World Aesthete Championship “Aesthetic Work of Art”
This title will be awarded to the potter who, according to the Jury, creates the best work of art, in
accordance with the conditions described in Art. 4.
Special Junior Prize
This title will be awarded to the junior potter, male or female, aged between 16 and 21 years on the
first day of the competition (i.e. born between 06/09/1993 and 06/09/1998), who obtains the
highest total score in:
• Creating the tallest cylinder.
• Creating the widest bowl.
Art. 4 – RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR THE TESTS
All the technical and aesthetic tests must be carried out using the potter’s wheels provided by the
Organization. All other equipment (cut-off wire, knives, ribs, sponges, etc.) must be supplied by the
participants.
Potters are strictly forbidden to make any mechanical adjustments to the potter’s wheels.
Should any adjustment be needed, it will be carried out exclusively by the members of the
Jury.
Potters may apply supports to their wheel, which must be removed at the end of the test.
All the competitors will be provided with the same type of clay (portaombrelli). The clay will be
weighed by the Jury (with the weight recorded in public) and then assigned to the competitor who
may knead it further or place it directly on the wheel.
No other clay, other than the clay weighed, may be used.
Competition for World Master and World Female Master Technical Championships
Tallest cylinder: competitors must create at the wheel the highest possible single cylindrical work,
using the amount of clay provided by the Jury, fixed at 6 (six) kg. The minimum diameter is fixed at
16 cm.
Widest bowl: competitors must create at the wheel a single work with the largest width possible,
using the amount of clay provided by the Jury, fixed at 6 (six) kg. The starting base of the bowl
must not exceed the diameter of the bat.
Competitors will have 20 (twenty) minutes during the preliminary heats and 30 (thirty)
minutes during the final heats to carry out these two tasks.
Competitors must remove their work from the potter’s wheel using a wire without damaging
or breaking the base of the work. If this happens, the measurement will not be taken into
account for the competition.
Competition for World Aesthete Championship “Aesthetic Work of Art”
A quantity of clay fixed at 6 (six) kg is assigned to each potter, to be used for all the steps of
realization of the work. Competitors in these heats are free to create whatever work of art they
wish, but it must not exceed 40 (forty) cm and 30 (thirty) cm. They have 20 (twenty) minutes to
shape their works on the potter’s wheel and afterwards the potter will be given the chance to
embellish his/her product by himself/herself (no help from other people is permitted). In this
second part, it’s not permitted the use of any tools, with the exception of ribs*. The maximum time
for the second part of this test is 20 (twenty) minutes and begins as soon as the time designated
for the potter’s wheel section has finished.
The works must be signed and will remain the property of Ente Ceramica Faenza.

In the second part of aesthetic embellishment of the works, it is possibile to use – besides
ribs – bottles for slip and a turntable.
Art. 5 – CRITERIA FOR AWARDING THE PRIZES
World Master and World Female Master Technical Championships
The first ten potters in each category (Master, Female) are eligible to take part in the finals of each
category (World Master and World Female Master).
Entrants will be ranked according to the following criteria for each of the tests:
a. For the cylinder: only cylinders whose diameter is the same or greater than 16 cm. The
diameter will be measured at various points from the base to the top of the cylinder. The height
will be measured once, from the bat to the top of the cylinder. The height will be measured
once, from the bat until the top of the cylinder.
b. for the bowl: the diameter of the bowl will be measured twice. The lower measurement will be
recorded and will count for the final score.
The prize will go to the competitor with the highest total score in millimetres after the
measurements of the cylinders and bowls have been added up.
Should the competition end in a draw, the finalists will be asked to repeat both tests in a shorter
amount of time, which will be established by the Jury.
World Aesthete Championship “Aesthetic Work of Art”
Each potter may apply for this competition, as indicated in the attached application form. The Jury
will take into account aesthetic, technical and artistic parameters when judging the competing
works.
Art. 6 – PRIZES AND AWARDS
The following prizes will be awarded:
World Master Technical Championship
! 1st prize: voucher of the value of ! 1.000,00 to be used at Cibas Impasti;
! 2nd prize: Ceramic cup made by Faenza ceramic artists and medal offered by the magazine
D’A.
! 3rd prize: Ceramic cup made by Faenza ceramic artists.
World Female Master Technical Championship
! 1st prize: voucher of the value of ! 1.000,00 to be used at Cibas Impasti;
! 2nd prize: Ceramic cup made by Faenza ceramic artists and medal offered by the magazine
D’A.
! 3rd prize: Ceramic cup made by Faenza ceramic artists.
World Aesthete Championship “Aesthetic Work of Art”
! 1st prize: voucher of the value of ! 400,00 to be used at Cibas Impasti.
Special Junior Prize
! 1st prize: award offered by the Association of the former students of the Istituto Statale d’Arte
per la Ceramica “Gaetano Ballardini” of Faenza.
At the end of the competition, a Shimpo Wheel RK-3E, offered by Cibas Impasti, will be
assigned by draw to one of the participants.
The Jury might set up other special prizes, which will be communicated at the Awards Ceremony.
All entrants will receive a certificate of participation.
Art. 7 – JURY
The Jury will be made up of renowned figures from the world of culture and technical experts of
this sector, appointed by Ente Ceramica Faenza. Any complaints must be submitted in written form
to the Jury at the Organization office no more than 15 (fifteen) minutes after the end of the
competition in question. The Jury’s decision is final for all the competitions. The Jury reserves the
right to change these rules in the event of exceptional circumstances and will immediately notify
the competitors accordingly.

Applications must reach the Organization office no later than 12 pm on Saturday 6th September
2014.
The competition will begin at the time indicated on the schedule (see Attachment 3).
All competitors must report to the Organization office on:
! Saturday 6th September 2014 at 2.00 pm for World Aesthete Championship “Aesthetic Work of
Art”;
! Sunday 7th September 2014 at 8.00 for preliminary heats and am and 2.00 pm for the final heat
of World Master Technical Championship and World Female Technical Championship.
