Per la costruzione sono state impiegate circa 30.000 tonnellate d’acciaio e 4.500 tonnellate d’alluminio The use of aluminium alloys in Hongkong and Shanghai structural applications, generi- Bank HQ, Hong Kong (1985): cally called “civil constructions”, The building has a modular design consisting of five steel represents a relatively recent demodules and eight groups velopment with respect to simi- of four aluminium-clad steel lar steel constructions. Inoltre, il processo di fabbricazione di semilavorati estrusi consente, in particolare, di ottimizzare le caratteristiche geometriche delle sezioni, con forme che coniugano minimi pesi The Wave, condominio con massime efficacie strutturali. residenziale a Almere, Allo stesso tempo l’estrusione perOlanda mette di ottenere profilati nervati The Wave, block of apartments in Almere, e irrigiditi senza ricorrere a sezioni Netherlands. composte, evitando interventi di (Progetto/Architects: saldatura e/o di bullonatura, semRené van Zuuk; Foto/Photo: Novelis Europe) plificando gli assemblaggi fra le- Scheda Tecnica n. 45/2015 rated in the shape of stars, so as to allow a beautiful natural light to filter through and illuminate the 14 chapels. During the past century this “new” metal was appreciated on account of many properties that were clearly superior to steel’s, above all its lightness and high resistance to corrosion, which in many cases have been the decisive elements in determining designers’ choices. After being used for roughly a century, aluminium and its alloys may finally be defined, to all intents and purposes, as “building materials” even in the civil engineering sector and for structural applications. The advantages of aluminium This official approval is confirmed by the inclusion of this material in the Eurocodes and in the Italian Technical Construction Standards among building materials and as such its use is regulated by a specific harmonized European Standard, EN 15088, concerning “Products for structural applications in constructions – Aluminium and aluminium alloys”. For all those using aluminium for the first time, or wishing to investigate the matter in greater depth, its main properties may be thus summarized (1): • Aluminium alloys represent a vast array of materials that cover, in terms of strength, the same spectrum as normal carpentry steel; • Resistance to corrosion allows in most cases to do without any type of surface protection; • Surface treatments, such as anodic oxidation and painting, contribute to improve aesthetics, while strongly increasing resistance to corrosion at the same time; • Technological solutions may be envisaged that allow bolted, riveted and welded connections to be obtained very easily; • Weight savings, with respect to steel solutions, may reach 50% and more, weighed against limits caused by a greater possibility of buckling and the risk of instability; • There are no fragility issues, even though specific ductility demands may need to be evaluated. Besides, the manufacturing process of extruded semi-finished goods allows, specifically, to optimize the geometrical characteristics of sections, with shapes that combine minimum weight with maximum structural efficiency. Scheda Tecnica n. 45/2015 At the same time extrusion allows the creation of ribbed and stiffened profiles without the need for composite sections, thereby avoiding welding and/or bolting, simplifying the assembly of frames and the construction specifications of braces. Requirements for CE marking These conditions allowed aluminium to multiply its applications in construction works, to the extent that a specific harmonized norm became necessary, indeed urgent: hence, EN 15088, the reference norm for designers using this material. This standard ensures that EU Regulation 305/2011, effective as from July 1st , 2013, that replaces once and for all EECDirective CPD 89/106 and that regulates the sale on the European market of construction materials, now also applies to aluminium. Among the duties of producers of semi-finished goods (extruded, rolled or cast goods), the standard also specifies that traceability must be guaranteed so as to allow any recall or removal of the product from the market in case it should turn out that it does not meet the conformity and correspondence requirements implied by the CE labellng. The key concept of the new Regulation is the Declaration of Performance (DoP) that: • is compulsory for all products regulated by a harmonized standard; • must contain information on the envisaged use; • must include the essential characteristics pertaining to the envisaged use; • must include the performances of at least one of the essential characteristics; • the producer must take on responsibility for the declared performances. In order to place CE label on those types of products that fall under the harmonized standard EN 15088, producers must carry out Initial Type Testing (that may also be carried out by an approved laboratory) and entrust a notified body with the initial inspection of the plant and of the factory’s production control system (FPC, Factory Production Control), so as to verify the application of all rules contained in Attachment ZA of EN 15088 standard. Following a positive evaluation, the notified body provides the company with a Factory Production Control Certificate. This certificate remains valid so long as the test methods and/or the requirements of factory production control laid down by the harmonized standard do not change and the production conditions in the plant do not undergo significant changes.
